    Five favorite Rolex’s in and I thought I was done, all acquired gray market because mostly higher end and not entry level, so now trying for an Explorer 1 and OP 36 Turquoise, still difficult, I have visited four local AD’s in LA area in the last month and going to try and be patient and hope to finally acquire with the AD and establish a relationship, hoping to finally have that experience, appreciate your channel!

    This is how I got my first Rolex, (Granted, my Rolex A.D. probably serves the smallest municipality in the country) I'd pop my head in about once a month and smile and flirt a little bit with the sales ladies and talk about the Rolex movements and talk about how beautiful and proportional the Explorer is and how it is my dream watch. 2 1/2 weeks later I got the phone call. Love my Explorer.

    AD's "relationship building" mostly means buying stuff that no one else wants first, such as the date and then they may honour you by letting you wait on their list, and to progress up the list, by buying some more stuff and then they may finally sell you a Rolex, but want to keep the papers, for the watch you've waited for 3+years you own Brilliant marketing company

    Great video.
    I have 3 Rolexes - a datejust, explorer, and a Daytona - all in steel. They are great, and are worn not an investment. The Datejust was straightforward, walked into an AD, it was in stock and purchased in a few minutes. At this point I had no idea how the market worked and how difficult some are to find.
    Once I came to buy the Explorer things got difficult, and the market situation became clear. I got one pretty quickly by chance, passing through a large airport I popped into the Rolex shop on the off chance and there it was. They had one in stock and it had arrived the day before. Pure luck.
    The Daytona was impossible, rarer than hen’s teeth. I visited over ten AD’s to ask about waiting lists and was even laughed at in 2 or 3 of them. Others quoted 7+ years. I turned to the grey market, got a brand new one, and at a reasonable premium. If you want it and can pay the extra to get it quickly, this is the way to go on selected models.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад +1

      You have the perfect collection in many people's eyes there and no one would blame you for going grey to add that Daytona to the collection. No doubt the investment will already have risen beyond the price you paid, so you will have bought well. I was quoted 2-3 years for an Explorer 1 today by an AD - the Rolex madness will never end.

      @@TheChapsGuide thanks Ash, it’s the collection I set out to build after more research than I’ve ever put into a work project ! As we are not travelling a lot due to covid, airports aren’t as good an option as they used to be. Different styles sell in different regions - for example, in the Middle East everyone wants gold and wouldn’t look twice at steel. That leaves options for those of us who will take it. Once travel opens up the major airports (Dubai, Heathrow etc.) can be an option but it’s still luck.

    Great video, as always! I recently got a new and well paid job. Now I am actually looking into buying my first luxury watch. But I gravitate more towards a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms or Louis Cartier. Though, Rolex is stunning too. About criminal intents, in the capital city of my federal state in Germany, just a week ago two Rolex watches were snitched off of two pedestrians, on a Thursday afternoon and in broad daylight. So that's that.

    This is a follow up on a reply I made to this video about 8 months ago. I went to my local Rolex A.D. They also sell Omega, Tudor, Breitling etc.
    I have visited them a couple of times and talked to them about my next purchase at their store, which will be an Omega Speedmaster. I already own an Omega Seamaster that I have owned for about 5 years, and I make sure to wear my Seamaster everytime I go there. Every time I have also mentioned that my next major purchase will hopefully be a Steel Submariner without the date function.
    This is part of my goal to make them see that I really want the Submariner and that I don't intend to sell it after I purchase it. So today we talked about watch flippers vs. people who really love watches and about how I intend to hopefully pass my watches on to my nephews. We had a nice honest talk about developing a puchase history with the A.D. and we talked about when the Submariner will be available to me.
    I like the thought that I have moved a step or two closer to aquiring a steel Submariner.

You don't have to spend a fortune and if all your looking to get is one watch this can work very well. Excellent, excellent video Ash, and definitely thanking you and for sure a thumbs up 👍🏼! You really explained the Rolex experience quite well, except for the fact that you mentioned Rolex just doesn’t sell to anyone, because I actually did work for the largest Swiss watch Retailer I’m the USA 🇺🇸 in the early 2000’s and we would sell Rolex to anyone, but again who knows if our prior clients resold them and many I think did, but yes the factor of discounts is real, this can have Rolex pull their line from your company and definitely ruin the integrity itself of the timepiece. I just purchased myself a few days ago a very unique Tissot V8 Swissmatic, which was very satisfying. How would you feel on doing a review on the entry level into the world of Swiss timepieces….. The Tissot for example……….?

    Several more things to think about. Long term ownership costs, i.e. service and repair costs-- somewhat costly. Rolex wants you to use their service centers for repair and maintenance, and not watchmakers outside their network.
    Historically, the Explorer 1 design came after the 1953 Everest expedition, with Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. They used Smiths wristwatches and a Rolex model that was a precursor to the Explorer 1, which had a different dial design.
    Ian Fleming/James Bond aficionados found that Ian Fleming wore an Explorer 1 as his personal wristwatch. According to one reference, Fleming's stepdaughter found it in a safe deposit box after her mother passed away. It's believed the literary (not film) Bond's Rolex described in the novel "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" as a "...heavy Rolex Oyster Perpetual on an expanding metal bracelet..." was an Explorer 1.
    Another purchasing consideration is the lack of a date function on some of the Rolex models (Explorer 1, for example). It's a very expensive luxury item for time only.

      It is a great idea to begin a friendly relationship with an AD as soon as possible, this can only have a positive outcome. The current 'wait list' (if there is such a thing in all reality) for a Sub is likely to be counted in years, opposed to a few months, so if I were you, I would seek to get on their radar as soon as possible and maintain that relationship with regular chats and drop-ins to prove that you are a genuine customer. Remember, it's all about the human interaction at the moment when it comes to the purchase of a watch - good luck sir.

      To be honest, if you are serious about getting a Daytona and prepared to purchase 2 expensive pieces in order to possibly get a good spot on a waiting list, you will alm ost certainly be better off going grey market and buying a Daytona from a watch dealer. Whilst this is likely to cost at least 50% more than RRP, it will certainly be cheaper than buying 2 pieces in the hope that you may be able to obtain the watch you actually want in the future. The 2 tone Daytona retails for £14K new in the UK, but a grey market option may be upwards of £18 - £20k, but can be achieved immediately. Worth considering before you commit to buying other watches, which, in most cases, are unlikely to unlock a Daytona.

      @@KC14109 I agree with Ash, I doubt 2 Datejust will unlock a Daytona even if its 2 tone. The ladies Datejust will unlock the blue dial Datejust that you like and that's about it as its going for slightly above retail in the pre-owned market. The current market for steel and full precious metals Daytona is thru the roof and the 2 tone is creeping up in price as it just do not make sense that the steel Daytona cost much more than the 2 tone currently. If you really like the 2 tone I suggest getting it sooner than later in grey or pre-owned market.

    I am afraid those Rolex watches may be quality but not for me .I reckon a chap should be seen to wear a more elegant timepiece that has a Swiss movement contained in a watch as thin as an old penny piece .Those Rolex are rather somewhat bulky in appearance not the sort of wrist watch one would feel comfortable with whist wearing a bespoke suit in polite company such as a chap would often find oneself old chap 🧐

    • @teakcore5261
      @teakcore5261 3 года назад

      I disagree, some models are rather bulky like the explorer 2, deep sea, yachmaster 2, but there are a lot of other pieces from the catalog that look very elegant dressed up, such as the Daytona (which is relatively slim and flat) and the 36 mm Datejusts (Ash’s model in the video) or Day-Dates. I have a Daytona ceramic and a Pepsi jubilee and they wear incredibly well with formal shirts and jackets, the Submariner is the maximum size I would go to wear with formal clothing. I can honestly tell you that the Daytona is really the best all around watch in the world, it does everything so well, it’s sporty and very resistant to wear and tear thanks to the ceramic bezel, oystersteel material, 100 meters water resistance and shock resistant components in the movement, it’s slim and elegant with classic proportions, it’s relatively cheap to service and easy to bring back to new with a polish if you want to in the future. All of this makes it a superior watch to the Nautilus and Royal Oak in steel and it also doesn’t cost a used Ferrari like those other 2. The Daytona is the perfect one watch collection and this is the reason why it’s so valued by collectors and aficionados.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад

    Hi Grandpa Ash, The majority of what you have explained to getting your wrinkly wrist a Rolex are as ancient as your ‘attire’. For instance the OP range released, basically drained all the silly looking colours sold out from ADs @ retail , yet there are over 100,000 of these pieces available on the grey market. This is no fault of Rolex, they made more than enough watches, being a mass production watch company. 1 million +Rolex watched were made in 2021. This is no fault of Rolex it is the fault of the grey dealers the grey dealers who control the market value. In short, there are plenty of Rolex’s, they are just in the wrong hands.
