When it comes to "homage watches" it's important to remember that the most homaged watch in history (the Rolex Submariner) is itself is an homage. (to the Blancpain fifty fathoms) Since watch making began companies have been borrowing from each other.

I think the solution to the "fake watch" issue is just being willing to be honest about what you're wearing. I recently bought a Seiko homage to the Speedmaster Moonwatch. I know that 99% of people I meet in the real world have no idea what a Speedmaster Moonwatch is....but for the very few that may ask what I'm wearing....honesty is the best policy. I don't pretend I'm wearing a 5 or 6 thousand dollar watch. If anyone should ever ask about it, it's a Seiko. If they want more detail, it's a Seiko that looks a lot like a Speedmaster Moonwatch. I'm a career firefighter who has a family and many, many things that I need to focus my hard earned money on. I'm not the kind of guy who can go out and drop 6 thousand dollars on a watch. I have all the respect in the world for those that can and are willing to, but I'm just not that guy right now. If the day ever comes, then I'll do it. But in the meantime, I have a watch that I really enjoy and that I can honestly and proudly say I've earned without having to lie or try to pass off as something that it isn't. I think that's the key difference in the whole homage debate. Are you honest about what you have on your wrist or are you lying to appear wealthier than you truly are? If the latter is the case, reexamine your priorities please

100% agree. I go one step further. I've had people compliment my homage watches, probably without knowing what they are paying homage to. After thanking them, I've explained exactly what the watch is. I have no interest in someone thinking I'm wearing the genuine article

One thing I have to take exception to is your remark about cheap Chinese movements. Yes, they definitely exist but this gives people the impression that all Chinese watches have them and that just isn't the case. There are Chinese brand watches now that are just as good as Steinhart that have Japanese and Swiss made movements in them. Some Chinese made watches are very well made and great value for money.

I am the proud owner of a 116503 and a 2022 Explorer 36mm. Prior to owning box of these, I bought a San Martin Exploring 36mm and a Pagani design 2-tone Daytona homage.
I used them as my motivation in work for what I was saving towards. Once I got the call and owned the original design, I sold them (for a small profit!).

Ultimately, what we choose to wear represents us. Choosing an homage because of its affordability and aspirational aspects makes a lot of sense. Stylistically, there is very little difference between it and the original on which it is based. Fakes are a no go for a variety of reasons. For myself, I simply choose to save up for what I really want or simply choose a different model as a substitute never really makes me feel what I want as the actual piece that I really desire.

    • @MrPleers
      @MrPleers 11 месяцев назад +2

I feel the same. For example, I like the Rolex Explorer. So I decided to save up for one. Even though I know it will take me years. But if I was not willing to do that, I would go for another watch that cost less, but I really like. For example a Tudor Black Bay.

I have a Invicta Pro Diver (40mm Submariner style case with a reliable NH35 engine from Seiko) I wear while travelling to places like London for the day, as I don't want to risk wearing one of my more expensive watches (not just for the risk of being mugged, but the hustle and bustle of a busy crowded city you end up dinking, bashing, scraping the watch on something.. I love it, great carefree little homage that looks a little sharper than a Casio Digital or G-Shock.

I have the Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Military which is a homage of the Rolex MilSub issued to the Royal Navy. Those watches are few in number and can reach for in excess of £100,000. Even had I that amount of money to spare I'm not sure I'd spend it on a watch. The Steinhart looks great and allows me to experience the MilSub without breaking the bank.

Same here: I got the Steinharts MilSub and the Vintage Red. Won’t buy originals, but also they fit the style of watches I wear. I have a Rolex sub and Yachtmaster as well, but purchased later. I wear Steinharts when I travel and in urban environment. Not the wisest cost per wear solution, but I’m ok with that for now. My friends frown upon homages, but fairly civil in their disdain :))

Very interesting video Ash. I personally do not care about watches and I would never spend a lot of money in any of them. However, I do appreciate the beauty of some of them and that is where the homage watches come in. Still, I would rather invest those £500 in clothes or books, which, to me, are far more important than a watch. Thank you for opening my eyes to something I did not know existed. Now I understand why people who love elegant, expensive watches but cannot afford them chose to buy homage watches. It is a very sensible idea. I wish you all the viewers a nice day.

Great video on watches that are affordable for common people with balanced view on subject. Remember you are still getting good movement in the watch like Steinhart, that is reliable and appealing in design (copyright expires after few years). All watches I had and have from Steinhart have been inside of COSC specification, and honestly I can't ask for more in modern era of digital pieces(with limited interest and budget for accessories). For me it is enough that I have a beater watch that ticks with it's automatic movement and is not relying on anything else to run than my own action of wrist. I might add that Steinharts costumer service is top notch.

Wear what you want; if you like it then it is ok to wear it. In the unlikely event anyone cares enough to ask then just be honest. I would happily tell anyone that I would never spend a large amount on a watch/clothing/car despite easily being able to afford to do so.

A classy and well thought-out presentation as always good sir! I would point out that even if the cost of the homage (in this case the Stenhart) puts you in the hole a bit, it also gives you a watch to wear while you're forced to go through that arduous dance with the Rolex AD. Also, you can keep your Rolex for safe situations while having the homage watch for, as you so rightly pointed out, situations that might be a bit dodgy like walking the streets at night.
I personally think that owning a homage before owning the original is a very wise and worthwhile choice to make.

I think the world is taking watches too seriously. It is a just accessory to make your outfit and arm look better. So buy whatever you want to buy. And homage and replicas are better options even than the real one. Atleast they are not robbing you for 1000 dollars for just a piece of steel.

What a great video! I wear an homage myself almost daily, a San Martin 39MM Explorer inspired watch and love it. Perhaps one day I will be able to move the ladder a bit; the Steinharts look amazing, and love the connection to Germany, as I was stationed in Augsburg twice back during the Cold War. But, I wanted to share that I have a vintage Alpha watch from 1955, 35mm, with gorgeous copper numerals and indices, and guess what, looks very similar to an early ref Explorer. I'd imagine back in the day where everyone wore a watch that this was much more common, and I think your average Joe probably never saw a "luxury" watch outside of magazines unless say, in a PX or department store, or the movies. I am sure our man Bond did alot for Rolex sales 🙂

I got the Tissot PRX & liked it so much I went to buy the chronograph, but upon trying it on, it was very heavy and very thick. I needed something to fit under sleeves and by chance came upon a homage of the PRX chronograph.
I ordered it just to see if I could live with the size, expecting it to be a throwaway piece, since it cost $80 on sale.
It ended up being an incredible watch. It uses Seiko's mechaquartz movement and they managed to keep the case as thin as the Tissot powermatic 80, ehich means it can fit under sleeves.
It's an incredible watch that does its own thing in a pacakge that looks like a PRX, but isn't. I paid $80 for it but the quality is something I'd easily say was in the $400 range.
This homage works for me, the tissot chronograph couldn't fit my need.

My first watch was actually the Ocean One. Homages are fine to me, but my issue when I first got into it was that I would spend more money on buying $500-700 watches when I could have saved up to buy the watch I wanted. For me, it was the price of entry that made me buy too many homages instead of save for the one I wanted.

Homage watches are the best test drives for that expensive watch you desire. For a fraction of the price you get to experience the look and the feel of the real one and find out if it's worth to eventually pull the trigger on the actual one.

Nice post Mr. Ash. You outlined very well everything we should know to differentiate real watches from homage watches and replicas. The only homage watch that I own is a Tactical Frog FXD. It is a homage watch of the famous Tudor Pelagos FXD made especially for the Marine Nationale's commando Hubert in France. I thought the Tactical Frog FXD would fit well on me as a French-Canadian frog. Ah ! Ah ! Ah ! I'm saying this with all due respect to the commando Hubert. I really love my homage watch. I chose a blue dial with a date at six and a blue bezel. Automatic NH35 work horse and reliable Seiko movement. Sapphire glass with AR coating. Titanium case. The lume is like a torch. It cost me about 250$CAN including taxes, shipping and duties. So a fraction of the cost of the real one. It is my beater watch. Keep up the good work. I subscribed to your channel. Bonjour from Montreal ! n.b. : your outdoor reminds me my hometown in Victoriaville, Quebec. The city was named in honour of the Queen Victoria. Cheers !

Excellent video essay, Ash. It very much reflects my point of view. It reminded me that I would like to ask you to reviews the Smiths watch brand. This traditional English brand is now owned by Time Factors in the UK, operated by Eddie Platt, I understand. They offer watches that are homages to their earlier designs, a couple of Rolex designs and one Universal Geneve design. I recently purchased one of their “Commando” models, a homage to the Rolex Commando sold in the US in the 1960’s. I must say, I am very impressed. The watch was only £345, yet provides a level of fit and finish I have never received for less than double that. It is more nicely finished than my $1,000 Seiko Presage Sharp Edge! Their watches are difficult to purchase, as their online store opens only several Sundays per year, and most items are sold out within minutes. Since they do offer an unusual value from a company based in the UK (though their watches seem to be assembled in China), I think that reviewing this brand may be of use to your subscribers. Thank you for your fine work!/ Warren (from Boston in the USA)

Ash. Great I agree totally with your pros . I have one watch that could be classified as a homage. It is a Addie's dive flieger watch which very much resembles a IWC. This is my beater watch and it has a sapphire crystal Japanese movement screw-down crown and 200m of water resistance all for $80. Can't beat that. I also have an orient dive watch and have had people ask me if it was a Rolex. So I have to tell them know it's a Orient and give them a history lesson on the Orient brand. Thanks for the video. In my experience, most people cant tell an expensive watch from an affordable one and probably even more don't care/unimpressed. Totally agree, and most people look at their phones these days anyway. Nobody really looks at your watch (except thieves and the very few watch enthusiasts), or even your sartorial elegance haha, unless you really are coming off as loud and out of place. Maybe when you are in the office, sure, but outside, it's just a different world nowadays.
I like China company automatic watch homages, great prices, very high specs (although I wouldn't trust their water resistance claims). Sapphire or high-beat Miyota movement for $100 or less ? Unthinkable in major brands. Do they last ? For sure, have had some for a couple of years, and they just keep on improving.

For me it depends if it's "inspired by" or a blatant copy with just the logo changed or the size by 1mm etc. If it's the former fair enough , if you do the latter in any other industry it gets very expensive very quickly with litigation. But as mentioned earlier if its just inspired by then thats ok

Last part regarding "checking/feeling" a watch before purchase of real one.
There is a high praise Seiko SKX and it reaching higher and higher prices. Before deciding to spend more than usually (for me as I have couple Seiko 5 already) I decided to purchase a homage.
It was Haimdallr or some of the Chinese brands just to find out that definitely it isn't watch for me. Not on bracelet, not on nato or two piece leather strap. I know it might differ from original one but before I bought it I check dimensions etc. and it was as original one. Now I know that I can easily scrap SKX from my list. The same goes for Rolex but for different reason. ;-)

If I may very respectfully counter the last con Ash, if someone wishes to buy the real version of the watch after the homage, wouldnt wearing the homage and being accustomed to it may lead one to that decision? The homage watch to me is a practice watch, I bought a homage speedmaster and after wearing it i didnt like the dimensions of it on my wrist, had i not bought the homage i wouldve been $10,000 in the hole instead of $120. I think you have made great videos talking about watches and i appreciate the continuous education you can never know too much.

I laugh at people who talk about homage watches vs "real watches" when the Rolex Submariner is a homage to Blancpain Fifty fathoms or that the Omega Speedmaster is a homage to Rodania Geometer. A lot of people like to think that their overpriced crap is so exclusive when it's really not. The gentleman in the video said "These (ETA movements) are not crappy chinese movements" but the funny thing is that the Chinese ETA copies have shown to be both more accurate and more reliable than the originals. "watch people" really like to sit on their high horses and think the watches they own are some sort of engineering marvels and that they are so exclusive when in fact they're not. Homage or not, wear whatever you want if it makes you happy. My absolutely favourite watch is a Casio F91. I own the overpriced crap too. I have 3 Rolex, 2 Omegas some IWC and some other BS no one really cares about. I, on the other hand don't walk around and think that my Rolex is so much better than a decent Seiko for example. The only difference is that I paid 100 times more for the Rolex.

  • @stephanesurprenant60
    @stephanesurprenant60 11 месяцев назад

I'm definitely not a watch guy, but I can appreciate the fact there is something amazing about, say, a mechanical watch and that some of them have interesting designs.
But if I wanted to purchase a watch, considering it's not my kind of toy, I'd probably make it something accessible and clearly distinct from some of the more iconic models. If I wanted something dressier, Seiko has this nice cocktail series where the dial is meant to evocated the bottom of a martini glass... That's not crazy expensive, but it's original, visually interesting, yet simple. If I wanted something more casual, there's an old line of Seiko that has a graph sheet dial. As an economist, it would just be a fitting piece. 😂
But an homage piece... I think I'd be put off by one of the cons you listed -- a watch attracts attention and I would fear giving off the impression of trying to pretend to have things I do not have. 😂

Fair video and quite impressive. But I think the only thing you can experience with the "homage" is how it looks on the wrist. The feel and finish or the full package can never be emulated. Unfortunately I have seen so many watch enthusiast forum comments where users buy an SM Submariner "homage" and later make statements like "the Rolex is overrated or not worth it" based in their homage experience.

I daily the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander. You could easily call it an homage of the Aqua Terra, but it isn't that much of a copy that I'd feel like I'm trying to pass it off as something it isn't. I don't have to worry about anything happening to it. If it is lost or stolen, I can replace it without worry (or impact to my credit score lol). The SW200-1 is easier to service as well. I've liked it and really want to wear it more than just about any other watch I've owned.

Christopher Ward do make really nice watches. I agree about the Sealanderr series and especially love my C60 Trident Pro 300. Another pro about homage watches are that the parts can be sourced quite easily and it doesn't cost much to mess up whilst learning about watch repairs. It gives one the confidence to experiment. Who knows, it might even open the door to doing your own custom watch dials/cases/crowns/sapphire crystals etc. As one knows how to repair the watch, it'll be the last watch one will ever need to buy (not likely 🙂).

Having bought two Rolex watches in the past few years (Sub no-date and 36mm Date Just) from my local AD I thought no problem, wrong - wait-listed now for over two years. Done waiting, ordering a San Martin homage next week. Can have this watch in 12 days. Reviews give it high marks and I can treat it like a watch not a prized heirloom.

started my watch journey with steinhart, was my first "swiss watch" even tho it being a german brand. i remember treating it like a rolex ide be cautious on bike rides and activities, i never once thought it was a cheap piece they feel quality and only advanced my passion for watches, where as if i was to get a fake rolex from the looki looki man i would have noticed quailty issues and might not of been where i am today in watches, i chose right by going homage vs fake. now im into tudor over rolex because i recognise quality over hype. watches are about the engineering not the flex. peace out!

Ash, IMHO the content of your channel is superior to other gentleman genre spots. I'm tool biased and feel that Damasko is THE watch to have. My current all-over favorite brand is Christopher Ward - I believe that the company is U.K. based. I'm amazed that Rolex/Tudor are such major players: the founder had a thing for marketing-he wasn't a watchmaker. My diver friend and I bought stainless steel models years ago and beat them senseless. We treated them as the tools that they are, and maintained them. Speculation, investing in precious metal Rolex in the 2020s has us laughing and scratching our heads. Would you do a spot on alternate formal wear: shirts without studs or cufflinks, and jackets with surgeon cuffs? Thank you.

I actually am very ok with homage watches and a homage watch actually saved me a few thousand dollars. Most of my watches are of original design and are micro brands. The only homage-y watch I have is the Vario 1918 Trench Watch which is built like the WW1 watches. But it has modern manufacturing techniques to make it a sturdier watch than a 100 year old watch would be presently. Also, I'd love to see you do a video for watches that celebrate achievements around $2000 Canadian.

I've seen Swiss watches costing far more than both my Empire Summer Blue Dial edition and less than my 1918 and they paled in comparison quality wise.

I have no issue with a good homage watch - some, like the Steinhart you mentioned, are excellent watches, with good quality movements, cases and bracelets. I have more of an issue with straight copies of luxury watches. Some of them are outright rubbish. I did buy a cheap Chinese Explorer copy once (it cost the princely sum of £25), which allowed me to try out an Explorer style watch while saving for a true luxury piece - however it was so poor I soon sold it again - for what I paid for it! I’d rather go for a lower end brand, and buy a genuine watch from them - Seiko, Orient, Bulova and others all make superb watches, which can be bought for a few hundred pounds.

I’m wearing a $15 Cartier Tank “homage”. It’s the exact same dimensions as a Tank. It’s stainless steel, Seiko movement, with really good finish. It is waaay better than it should be and is kind of insane someone put this level of effort for $15. Just like soo many “homages” it is in no way a homage in the technical sense. It’s also not technically counterfeit, but make no mistake these outfits are trying to look as close to the original as possible. Sometimes they actually improve on the originals in some ways! It’s an interesting subject for sure. Meanwhile I’ll be shopping for a nice leather strap for my “clomage” without carrying any opinion about its origins.

For the last 10 years I have been wearing the Rolex every day and got the itch so I bought a Seiko PADI, a TISSOT Seastar 1000 and a Steinhart Ocean One - I found I was just put off a bit by the homage - beautiful watch but I am not keeping it. What other people choose to wear (on their wrists especially) doesn't bother me in the slightest. I wouldn't think any less or more of a chap whatever sort of timepiece he wore, or even if he chose to wear nothing at all.
Personally I wouldn't wear an Homage watch. But that's my personal choice, and it's based on more of an economic consideration than anything else.
In my personal circumstances, the £500 - £1000 price category just doesn't make a lot of sense. Especially for a watch that's going to require an expensive service at some point. I own, wear, enjoy, and quite comfortably rationalise several lower priced watches that fulfil useful functions. I've got inexpensive digital watches I wear when cycling, hiking, swimming, boating, and exercising. I've got a couple of thin, precious-metal plated quartz watches I wear with formalwear. And I've got a couple of relatively inexpensive analog fashion watches I wear in some casual situations, or if I'm going someplace I'd be concerned about security.
I've also got a very nice genuine (papers and box, bought from new) Submariner that I've had for more than thirty years. It's my daily wearer. I've also got a vintage Omega and a 14kt gold Hamilton that I inherited. And I'm still trying to get restored to working and wearable condition.
For me, a watch in the mid-to-high hundreds price point doesn't make much sense. At that price it's not really disposable. But it's also not ever going to be an heirloom. That, more than anything else, is why I shy away from watches in that price category. It's also why I would never buy an Apple Watch - despite having an almost exclusively Apple electronic ecosystem in my personal life.

I've got two "homage" (French translation - Le Ripoff) watches. My Seiko Flightmaster is a ripoff of the Navitimer 1332412. And my Seiko kinetic diver is a ripoff of the Seamaster Pro 300. The kinetic takes key design elements from the Omega. The Flighty is just a copy; but it's a chronograph with 200m water resistance. Seiko has been in business longer than Breitling; not as long as Omega. It's a real watch company whose high end pieces are the equal of anything the big boys offer. Truth be told, I wouldn't buy an Omega or a Breitling even if I could afford it. I just could not spend that much money on a wristwatch.

I think certain designs are like button down shirts. They’re ubiquitous. Personally I’ve seen these modified Seiko 5s modified to be “Relax” watches. They’re quite cute. I was recently contemplating why I’d love to own a fraudulent painting, but not a fake watch. I decided that art - if not a direct copy is an original idea. If people felt it had value when they thought it was a genuine Monet, why does it matter if it was painted by someone else? A watch is different. There is no original idea there at all.

I've had my Steinhart 39 Adventure for about a year now, and I love it. I just can't justify spending more than $7,000 of my hard-earned money for a Rolex explorer. I mean no disrespect to those who do spend that kind of money or more on a watch, but I won't do it. I didn't buy the Steinhart because I wanted people to think I own a Rolex, I just like the look and functionality of it. With it's Sellita SW200-1 it is accurate to about 1-2s/day. I don't think anyone really looks at my watch and thinks it is a Rolex, and if they do it makes no matter to me. I'm not concerned about what others might think of me based on what watch I'm wearing. People should feel free to wear watches they like and can afford. Too much of the watch world is focused on what others think.

I have two of those homage watches that homage watches that are hard to obtain (if you can get at all) and very expensive. I own the Steinhart OneOcean OVM (One vintage Military) Diver watch that homages the vintage 70's Rolex MilSub 5517 used by the UK Special Service Naval Forces (I inherited one by my step-dad) and I got to say that the Seinhart is MUCH BETTER ! It has double AR Sapphire crystal, better 28,800 VPH/ 4HZ movement, 300 water resistance, etc. while the MilSub is way too expensive (upwards of $200K) for a watch with an old Rolex Caliber 1520 at 19,800bph / 2.75 HZ, Acrylic (Domed) crystal with Tritium Luminous Hour Markers, Circled ‘T’ on Lower Half (which doesn't lume at all now), 200 Meters / 660 Feet Water Resistance, Bidirectional Timing w/ Aluminum Insert, which is NOT good for diving! Also I own a Addiesdive watch Homaging a vintage Seiko Capitan Willard, and again, it has characteristics of an old technology, outdated, and very expensive.
