How? It's the opposite... The sub means you actually need a second watch for formal. The explorer allows you never to need another watch unless you are a diver. By the way they are both fantastic and a sub is also a great one watch collection 👍
So true if I sold my collection and decided to have one watch I'd choose the Submariner non date. But when it comes to watches I like variety hence why I own 7 watches.

I sold my Sub. Now I have a Cartier Santos, an Omega Speedmaster reverse panda and my beloved Explorer. If I only could have one watch , the Explorer would be my choice.
Having a 6.25 wrist, I opted for an Explorer for it's size and versatility, not to mention it being so elegant. I had the choice of getting a Sub but found it a bit too large for my wrist especially the long clasp. Also have a BB58 which I think offers a ton of value and fills the divers itch. Hard to believe the Tudor is my most comfortable watch perhaps because of the female end links.
I’d definitely go Explorer. It’s the perfect size, understated, and under the radar of most people. I can’t afford one, but I have a Tudor Black Bay 36, which ticks very similar boxes - I’d be worried to wear a sub when I’m out and about, given the rise in watch thefts.
Unlike a lot of people, I think there are better watches out there than the 114060 and 124270. For a ceramic dive watch, the 116600 Sea-Dweller blows the 114060 and 116610 out of the water. For a field watch, the 16570 (Polar) Explorer II is the real under the radar watch. And if you want to go with a really classy dive watch, nothing beats the pre-ceramic Submariner models, especially if you can get one with a patinaed tritium dial and a ghost bezel.
Flexible, versatile, universally wearable, rough and rugged, iconic, beautiful, classically elegant, the original bond watch.. Explorer 1 36mm. I LOVE THIS WATCH ♥ (7-inch wrist)
Ash, I own both too albeit the Explorer is the Steel/Yellow Gold 124273 model and even though I really like the Submariner I prefer the Explorer also. Great video I really enjoyed the comparison.
I'm lucky enough to own both and they each have their place and situational strengths ... For the young man in question, as a solution to his one watch requirements, I agree with your choice ... The explorer in this case for him.
Before i got my 124270 i had a 16610, it was my daily beater. Somehow the Explorer did get all the wrist time and I end up selling my 16610 for a 18238 day-date for the more special arrangements. Love the 36mm Explore go for it! :)
I wear Explorer 1 on NATO strap inside my 7.5 inch wrist. It’s a go anywhere and do anything watch. Diver style watches including GMT’s looks little too noticeable and flashy to my taste for everyday wear.
Thanks Ash! I think its the Explorer for me. Being in a service facing industry I think the stealth of the Explorer is a trait I could probably benefit from - and the point about versatility as it will be the only watch in my collection for some time.
Great video. The sub has never appealed to me. I thought for sure I would get a 39 explorer, but when I tried it on I hated it. For whatever reason the explorer just works great in 36, a size I’d normally say is too small
It's because of the size of the dial. The Submariner has a small dial, just like the Explorer 36, except with a bezel. A 39mm Explorer looks a lot bigger on the wrist than a 40mm Submariner.
I would recommend getting both but the Explorer first for its versatility. Prefer the new Explorer (124270) and the 14060M sub. Classics. As someone else pointed out, the Tudor BB36 is also a great watch, and an alternative to the Explorer if you can't come to terms with the taper on the bracelet.
@@SaintWill70 By versatility I'm referring to the variety of occasions it can be worn. I've worn mine on long, remote hikes in difficult conditions but also with a suit to the opera. It worked great for both.
recently stumbled upon your videos and enjoying .. completely agree with your opinion on these two watches but for me it had to be the Sub .. I rarely dress formal but have other lesser watches that fit that category .. just got my one and only so far Rolex Submariner - 007 model no date .. Great piece of a 2022 edition ..
I have the Explorer 124270, and I adore it! I would one day like to own the Submariner 126060. I think that would make the perfect two watch collection.
I really enjoyed the video. I did expect you to choose the Explorer, mainly because of the size and versatility. I myself am still on my journey towards my goal of owning my first Rolex. My choice is the Submariner 124060. I visited my local A.D. again yesterday and we had a nice conversation about the different options.
I had exactly the same dilemma 26 years ago and I ended up with the Explorer .Would I make the same choice today?Any day of the week 👍🤩The Explorer is the only one and done of their catalog.😤💪
Both and you’ll end having the best two watch collection for generally any occasions .. from dress - casual - sports - rugged.. explorer x sub got you! ❤
I just got the call last week from my AD for the explorer. It took 18 months from going on the list with no purchase history. I don’t know how true this is but the AD said the people above me pulled out because of the cost of living. Maybe I got lucky 🤷🏾♂️
And with the Watch price crash over the last year, there is more availability at the AD because alot of Rolexs sell close to retail in the grey market now, and the flippers aren't buying them
I’ve had 3 Rolex’s offered to me by ADs in the past 2 week which has been quite a surprise! However, they are all within the waiting range that the ADs mentioned in the beginning - 2 years+ for the subs and 9-12 months for the datejust.
Great video Ash. Would love to see you do a video on the Submariner Date VS No Date. The aged old question that constantly divides & offers a great debate.
@@iamnew7545 Does a date window belong on a dive watch, why is the date version more popular than the no date, iconic Rolex design with the cyclops. And so it goes...
Just got both, after the relase of Explorer 40. One for daily wearing in a low profile and modest lifestyle, one for weekend and holiday with something iconic and speical.
Love both watches but the Explorer has been my favourite watch for about 20 years. A true 1 watch collection due to its versatility with straps alone, black, brown leather, steel, rubber, Nato. They all look good on it. Not many watches look at home while hiking, sailing and mountaineering (Designed for it) but also look just as at home with a Suit or Tux. Because before Rolex became the no1 (arguably) status symbol for success during the 80's (It was the 80's power icon), it was the G-Shock sports watch for 40 years beforehand. Explorer for me, hopefully in the near future. The only real decision would be 36mm or 39mm, as I nearly have an 8" wrist, 39mm might be the better option but the 36mm just looks better.
From a style standpoint, there is only one choice: Submariner. It goes well with any clothes and activity. I wear mine on the golf course, I wear mine working outside, I've even worn mine with a tuxedo.
I have both. The new Explorer 36 and the Sub 41mm no date. The Explorer is the perfect everyday watch. I prefer to wear the Explorer. It looks fantastic. The Sub is "The Star" "THe Rolex" if you know what i mean. It does attract too much attention
The Explorer is very discrete, very suitable for environment where you want to wear a great and luxury watch but do not want to draw attention, such as in the office or on the street.
Confession time, I used to do a lot of Scuba Diving and 10 years ago when I retired from the Met I bought a no date Sub. It is my go to watch and I would buy it again. While I do like the look of the Explorer, if I ever buy another Rolex it will be a Pepsi GMT.
@@SteveMrW - thanks, makes sense. You must have got the ceramic bezel version as just came out then. Am I right in that, the no date is more iconic as the first submariners were without the date , as was the model James Bond wore? Cheers
@@rezar6894 I believe the original Bond watch was a 5513 (no winder protection). Although I bought my watch 10 years ago it was as new and not new, it does not have a ceramic bezel insert.
I've also been looking at this duo and the problem is as you said in a different video that £6100 for the Explorer is quite a lot (I believe it was £5100 a little over year ago). Especially when considering that technically it is the same as the OP 36, which goes for £5100 at the moment. It is a very nice watch though and I like how inconspicuous it is.
Usual dilemma for lots of folk. I have a Sub LV and 36mm explorer ( now only used by wifey) and really waiting for the new release for it to be 39/40mm. The Sub feels heavier for long use at times but I still its the perfect size watch than the 36mm for most men. 🎉❤ Love your videos. And love the efforts and detailing in ur videos Reminds me of my earlier job at ExxonMobil Surry Leatherhead / very similar natural surroundings❤
As far as Rolex or any other high-end brand goes, it's best to buy them second hand, preferably through private sales. As stated below, one can even buy a Tudor for even less outlay. The watches one finds this way are usually incredibly well kept... And we can skip the markup from professional watch dealers. Also... My personal opinion is that the Rolex Explorer is a much more versatile timepiece.... And the more elegant of the two. Cheers
If you can find them cheaper pre-owned then do it. Good luck finding a pre-owned ceramic Sub cheaper then list price… a 36mm Explorer maybe… as not as sought after. 👍🇬🇧
You know there are other watch brands mr Chaps right?;) get yourself a nice Timex! The amount of times your outdoors I also think a GShock is in order!!!!??? Possibly a Mudmaster?!;)
I do prefer to wear my watches as they are intended, so they get a good bashing regardless of the brand. But I have a special soft spot for Lorus for any suicide missions.
Whilst I like the EX 39 (the only one my wrists could possibly use because the 36mm is more like 35.5mm and is way too small for many men), the bezel being steel would get scratched to high heaven if I wore it as a beater, so while I do like its simple classy looks, I would purchase the sub definitely. The ceramic bezel will last way longer and look "new" for much longer. But I think the new sub releases should have a third colour to add more variety to the dial (like a red etc), it's a bit boring now in just black when the watch is basically the worlds number 1 homage watch.
Another great explorer video. One critique and one question, I’d love this video even more if you’d set the times of the watches to the same time so you can compare them exactly. Who made your deck jacket? Thanks for the quality content.
A 1 watch collection needs at least a date if not more. A lot of people wear watches nowadays to keep them from checking their phone and getting distracted. I recommend Citizen for beginners who just want 1, no battery changes and no servicing. You can get any complication with no bump in price
I have an op39, iwc 39mm chrono spitfire and orient ray ii as a beater/daily... I find the sub too boring a.k.a. safe.. Tried on the 43.5mm black titanium/ ceramic seamaster and was blown away..🤯 Finding more and more reasons not to go with the sub for the next purchase other than resale value.. Buying what you like is soo true for me
I'd suggest buying sterile dial versions of both of them. Each would cost about USD100. U can then feel the weight of them on your wrist, whether it would fit under your shirt cuff, etc. One would then be able to make a better choice.
It’s very difficult to just get one and don’t think about getting the other one. I bought the 14060m 15 years ago and I think I have been thinking about Explorer for that entire 15 years. So aim to get both.
Hi Ash, loving the comparison video's. I have the dilemma of these 2 watches at the moment, and your video's are helping a lot. The explorer 1 suits my understated personality more than the sub, but every time I see the sub, I can't stop looking!
If the Explorer was still a 39mm I might agree, however I think that 36mm is too small for most gents. I’d steer him towards a 41mm DateJust with the black dial with batons, smooth bezel and Oyster bracelet… or a black OP41. Or wait until W&W on Monday… there could be a new Explorer 1 release to savour? 👍🇬🇧 For my money a No-date Sub all day long… iconic.
Review is well done. However, I'd have compared the 39 or 40 Explorer to the Sub, rather than the 36 Explorer, to make the comparison more apples and oranges rather than apples and grapes...when speaking of size or wrist presence. I have the 39 Explorer and a neo-vintage 40mm Pepsi GMT-Master (which, of course, parallels the 40mm Sub, size-wise), and I find the look and feel of the two to be quite distinct though equally pleasing to the eye and equally comfortable on the wrist. The two make for a versatile Rolex mini-collection, with the GMT on the more sporty side and the Explorer, despite its 'tooliness', on the more casual, business-suit, even dressy side.
Both great. But I could not disagree more. The sub wears fine with suits. Heck people now wear sneakers with suits or smart watches..even formal is more casual. The sub is also fine for every occassion. Although I have the sub, I am interested in 36mm Explorer. With all the crime, I would like something that flies under the radar. Just hard to find them new.
Ash, given the choice between these two excellent watches, I would gravitate towards the Explorer - but it would have to be the 39mm variant as in my opinion 36mm is just a tad too small for me.
Class & style means 36 mm as the 36mm Explorer remains the only true Rolex unchanged for almost 70 years ! The Rolex engraved rehaut is a " no no " for many, so take a look at pre-2oo6 Explorer & Submariner... true old skool look !
I own both of these like many others commenting and there is definitely a place for both in a collection, they both serve different purposes. As a daily wear, 100% the 36mm explorer. It's much lighter than the sub (around 119g vs 150g); the 40mm explorer has less purpose in my opinion as it is heavier and is a similar size to the other rolex models. The 36mm and has a slimmer bracelet compared with the submariner and slightly lower profile case, meaning it is comfortable for daily wear, to the point you forget you're wearing it. It is more discreet, easily slides under the cuff and flies under the radar. The submariner is a great alternative to the daily watch, ideal for gym & sports incl. swimming, meetings, holidays & social occasions where the extra weight and extra attention isn't an issue. I disagree that the submariner can't be worn formally, the same goes for the GMT, they are iconic and classy. Bond often seen wearing the submariner formally in the movies. A stainless-steel 5711 is also a dive watch and can be worn formally, however, I think the design and size & thickness does have a part to play as the Omega Ploprof or Sea-Dweller Deep Sea would be unsuitable. The ceramic bezel, polished sides on the case, bracelet & bezel grip and white gold hands & hour markers helps the sub wear well formally wear. I would typically choose a precious metal day-date or daytona for formal occasions though as they will do this better. If I was buying just one, I would go for the 124270 explorer if it was to be worn daily, and the no-date submariner if it was being worn a few days a week/occasionally then get the explorer later.
I personally don’t like the way Sub looks and the clasp/bracelet is overgrown for the current iteration. 116610LN is king. I’d take the Explorer. Actually that’s a lie - I’d want a date so I’d get a Datejust.
This year is the 70th anniversary of the explorer...and on Monday rolex is announcing its new releases..I cant wait to see what special commeratiive edition or new variant of the explorer is released...I dare say bark may wish to have a look at this come Monday

Hey Bark, buy your self a Tudor Black Bay AND a Tudor Ranger. Number 1 - you can buy them TODAY. Number two - you can take them on the very nice weekend in Paris you'll have with the two thousand dollars in your pocket from not buying a Roller.
The 39/40 mm Explorer is a nearer comparison to the Submariner in this video as it is a similar size. The Sub is a more robust watch with its ceramic bezel and crown guard protection.
As an owner of an Explorer 39mm and a Sub Date 40mm supercase i would make the same choice, i stay with the explorer!! The only watch you need, by far the watch most wrist times takes in my collection
When I was a young man the Submariner was the watch I wanted but couldn't afford, nor find, as the internet didn't exist. That being said, the Explorer I is more me.
As a thought exercise it would be interesting to go back in time to when mid 30s millimetres sizing was the norm and present a 40mm or larger watch for consideration. I suspect there would be a fair amount of amusement with comments such as - "clown's watch" - "you look like a child wearing their Father's watch" - etc. It's just perception, as is much of anything really.
It's not as easy as either the Explorer or the Submariner. There are different iterations of each. I'm more of a Submariner guy, but I'd never get the 114060 or 124060. It'd have to be a pre-ceramic Submariner, and out of all the different Submariners, realistically it'd be the 14060M with the two line dial and the flat four bezel. Of course, if I could afford it, and I could find one, the perfect Submariner is the 5517. But since that' costs the same as a house, that's never going to happen.

I know your knowledgeable in rolex but what your intake. On a unrelated question what your input on tartan/ check trousers? The 124060 is a nice balance between the classic and the professional Rolex.
Like a lot of people, i got both. The explorer is easier to wear for a everyday watch. For holidays and weekends, i prefer the sub.
Glad to see you purchased the true Sub NO DATE! The date complication does not belong on a double black Sub
Ash, I own both too albeit the Explorer is the Steel/Yellow Gold 124273 model and even though I really like the Submariner I prefer the Explorer also. Great video I really enjoyed the comparison.
It's tough to choose between the world's best field watch and the world's best diver. Great comparison!
I'm lucky enough to own both and they each have their place and situational strengths ... For the young man in question, as a solution to his one watch requirements, I agree with your choice ... The explorer in this case for him.
I want both tbh but for now I love my 126900 Air-King which is basically a 39 Explorer with personality
Good luck and enjoy!
Agree. The versatility and comfort of the explorer is unmatched
I sold my 2019 sub during lockdown I prefer my seamaster, I bought the two tone explorer and it’s barely left my wrist
I had to wait 2 weeks to get the Explorer 1, and it is my first Rolex as well. It seems supplies are getting back up.
Which country is this?

Can't go wrong with either of them. Amazing watches, thanks for the video.
Very nice to hear a experienced opinion with good arguments.
recently stumbled upon your videos and enjoying .. completely agree with your opinion on these two watches but for me it had to be the Sub ..
Absolutely
What debate is there? You want the date, get the date version, simple! 😄
Lies
Great video ash! I agree - the explorer is the more versatile and class piece of the two. I suspect this video will collect a ton of views….
From a style standpoint, there is only one choice: Submariner. It goes well with any clothes and activity. I wear mine on the golf course, I wear mine working outside, I've even worn mine with a tuxedo.
ye but you can wear flip flops with a tuxedo, doesn't mean it works.
Thanks for sharing. Out of interest what made you go for the no date Sub over the date version? I ask as in that dilemma today
@@rezar6894 For me the face of the no date Sub is more symmetrical, the cyclops date bubble spoils the look of the watch.
" Stealthy style " by jove sir, what a fine expression you coined there.
I would get the submariner... It has more presence, it's elegant and you can time down your cooking! 😊
That’s why I am choosing to go with the OP36. I prefer the dressy dial and 20mm lugs. Maybe one day I’ll get the Explorer
Usual dilemma for lots of folk.
I have a Sub LV and 36mm explorer ( now only used by wifey) and really waiting for the new release for it to be 39/40mm.
The Sub feels heavier for long use at times but I still its the perfect size watch than the 36mm for most men. 🎉❤
Love your videos.
And love the efforts and detailing in ur videos
Reminds me of my earlier job at ExxonMobil Surry Leatherhead / very similar natural surroundings❤
@@TheChapsGuide hahahaha nice!
It's from The GAp - about 8-years ago.
Same boat. I have cronos sub and explorer. I think I will buy the Rolex explorer 39mm used that’s my grail
I find the sub too boring a.k.a. safe..
Tried on the 43.5mm black titanium/ ceramic seamaster and was blown away..🤯
Finding more and more reasons not to go with the sub for the next purchase other than resale value..
Buying what you like is soo true for me
Good Lord, the 114060 is an absolute stunner. Such a beautiful timepiece.
I have both. Want to get ride of one. No idea which..
I'd suggest buying sterile dial versions of both of them. Each would cost about USD100. U can then feel the weight of them on your wrist, whether it would fit under your shirt cuff, etc. One would then be able to make a better choice.
I have 14060m (4 line) and Explorer 40mm. They are both lovely.
It’s very difficult to just get one and don’t think about getting the other one. I bought the 14060m 15 years ago and I think I have been thinking about Explorer for that entire 15 years. So aim to get both.
I prefer the tudor 39 instead of the no date sub..
Good morning Ash. Good advice for Rolex entry level watches. Of the Rolex brand those are the two I am drawn to. Cheers Ron
That cow mooed at just the right time at the end. Perfectly executed with both style and panache 😂 🐮
Bark, you've just got to try both on in person. Then you'll know which one is right for you.
Sub all day all the way; that glidelock clasp and clicking bezel wins for me 💯
@@phmwu7368 36mm is who that watch is....its part of its identity...
Thoughts on the Explorer 40mm?
One of my videos in the coming week is on this very watch
Bought a Tissot Seastar 1000 40mm yesterday. 😁
Good choice!
two handsome ROLEX wrist watches . I have the submariner/ date . I think the 'cyclops' - is''ROLEX'' . - either way , you can't lose. stay safe ~ JDS/CT
Hey Bark, buy your self a Tudor Black Bay AND a Tudor Ranger. Number 1 - you can buy them TODAY. Number two - you can take them on the very nice weekend in Paris you'll have with the two thousand dollars in your pocket from not buying a Roller.
The design of either doesn’t speak to me. I’d rather just wear my longines avigation bigeye every day instead of either of those watches
Your watch videos are outstanding. Thank you
Glad you like them!
One of them records time lapsed up to 60 mins and can also place a marker on a given time as reminder. So both doing "one thing only" is not accurate.
Thanks ash as always good reviews and honestly about these icons watches
I'm really loving this channel.
I wish I actually have this problem one day 😂
Just let me know where and when you can walk in and buy both or either?
You can't buy either of them so it doesn't really matter does it?
The 39/40 mm Explorer is a nearer comparison to the Submariner in this video as it is a similar size. The Sub is a more robust watch with its ceramic bezel and crown guard protection.
As an owner of an Explorer 39mm and a Sub Date 40mm supercase i would make the same choice, i stay with the explorer!!
The only watch you need, by far the watch most wrist times takes in my collection
If you asked me this a month ago I'd have probably said the Submariner....
Right now? Explorer all day! In the 36mm at that.
When I was a young man the Submariner was the watch I wanted but couldn't afford, nor find, as the internet didn't exist. That being said, the Explorer I is more me.
How many of each do would you say are produced by Rolex each year ??
It is a Rolex secret. But the estimate is between 800k and 1-million
Never even thought about the Explorer growing up. Always the black steel Submariner Date. Good thing I don’t ever wear a suit. 😊
First time here. Good video. Just subscribed.
Thanks and welcome
Are they too similar to own both?
And now we have a 40mm choice for 2023 in the Explorer
It's not as easy as either the Explorer or the Submariner. There are different iterations of each. I'm more of a Submariner guy, but I'd never get the 114060 or 124060. It'd have to be a pre-ceramic Submariner, and out of all the different Submariners, realistically it'd be the 14060M with the two line dial and the flat four bezel.
Of course, if I could afford it, and I could find one, the perfect Submariner is the 5517. But since that' costs the same as a house, that's never going to happen.
Good comparison. And two great Rolex watches.
Thanks for watching!
Nice vid ash. Would like to see a GMT vs Submariner next please

Hi ash I would like your thoughts on Omega? I am fine with my victorinox watch & Apple watch but if in the future I would like a automatic omega, an automatic in general. I know your knowledgeable in rolex but what your intake. On a unrelated question what your input on tartan/ check trousers? I want to be a bit more bold and already have solid colour chinos but what a would like something out there.
Omega make magnificent watches that are at least as good as Rolex, if not somewhat better. I personally resonate more with the Rolex ethos myself, but if Omega introduce a piece that sings out to me, I would certainly have no hesitation in adding one to my small collection.
Nice presentation 👍
