Personally, I’d keep the Explorer 1 and it’s not even close. It’s arguably the most perfect 3-hand dial design ever and it is more versatile than the other Rolex’s in your collection. Another reason to keep it is you’ll probably get more money for the other watches. Also, you already have the dive watch category, and 40mm+ sizes covered in your collection, so you won’t miss the Sub. The Explorer 2 has so many overlapping traits with the Sub: black dial, same hands, same indices. You can easily find a more unique GMT somewhere else.
The explorer 1 is indeed a lovable piece, super under the radar, great heritage, small, refined. For me if this was made o a 37 mm. it would had been my preferred one, over any rolexes.
I am curious to know which one would you keep and why, But also If you had the entire amount available (aprox $30.000) what watches would you buy? Please let me know in the comments, thanks :)
I'd keep the sub , just such a classic and versatile watch for what it is. For 30k I would personally get a Parmigiani Fleurier Tondagraph GT, a SeaQ panorama date and a Credor Signo 6870. Should be do-able in that budget if bought pre owned / grey market
I'd sell them all, and use the $30,000 to buy less clinical watches. I've come to appreciate the pre-ceramic Rolexes. A 14060M Submariner, or a 16710 GMT would be my top choices. Get a couple of NATO straps to put them on. How about a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronograph. It's a great looking watch with an awesome skeletonized dial on the reverse side. A Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle is a great looking watch. The green Omega Seamaster 300 Pro on a rubber strap is the most interesting variation of the Seamaster to me. Tudor recently released the Pelagos FXD Chrono for cyclists, which has a wonderfully intelligently designed dial.
I purchased Explorer 1 and Submariner same year my son was born. Explorer 1 I’m wearing on the NATO strap everyday. Doing everything with this watch, traveling, cooking, hiking, playing games etc. Also asking my son to help me to put it on my wrist and buckle the strap. Some day this will be his watch with tons of memories. He will get it no matter what. Submariner will be his college fund. If we can get it through without selling the watch, it will be his after he graduates from university.
I’m in the same blessed situation you are in. Only my Sub is a 5513 from 1972. My Explorer 36mm 2021 is my everyday watch. Perfect for me. On every other weekend. I’ll wear my Speedy. On special occasions I’ll wear my JLS master Ultra Thin small seconds. That’s my 4 watch collection. All pretty much one and done types of watches. All strap monsters, all quality over quantity.
I have the same Rolex models in my collection and have struggled with the same dilemma. I love all 3! In the end, I chose to keep them because once sold, it's not so easy to obtain them again and the prices will likely be exceedingly more than what you originally bought/sold them for in the first place. They all have sentimental value to me as well, so holding on to them so I can put them on when I fancy them again rather than missing them once they are gone was the right decision for me. I say keep them all and move forward. The market right now is also not in the best place for private sellers to offload a Rolex so patience is the best solution.....for now.
I also have these 3 watches, pre-ceramic era. I have considered selling the 36mm Explorer but couldn’t do it. I decided a while ago (for sanity) not to exceed 12 watches in the collection, and because of this I have sold a few I ended up regretting selling, despite not getting wrist time. All the watches I have are above 9/10 on the “wrist presence satisfaction” scale. When I want a new one it’s a well thought-out decision and not an impulse. It helps “control” the hobby.
I went through a similar dilemma recently with my 116900 Air King and 124060 Submariner. The more they went up in value on the second hand market, the less and less I wore them. More a subconscious decision than anything else, but every time I went to pick one up in the morning to wear for the day, I found myself hesitating and reaching for a piece that I was less precious about. Consequently, over time the Rolex in my collection went from being watches that made me smile and feel great, to watches I potentially worried about for fear of negatively affecting their (financial) value. So I took the decision to sell, made my profit and replaced with a couple of Grand Seiko watches that I feel give me more joy, less worry and personally think are better designs, technology and overall value. But that's just my opinion. First time watching your channel and now subscribed.
that's so true, I have the GMT Batman that I bought years ago when ADs even offered a small discount for some steel sports Rolex, yes you heard that right, many models even the GMT Batman were readily available and there were discounts from the AD! In recent years, as it's getting harder and harder to buy one from the AD and the higher it went up in value, the less and less I wear it, I don't know why, perhaps partly it's my self-consciousness of wearing something that is practically worth the same as a decent used car. Perhaps it's also because there's been a rise in watch robberies with crooks especially targeting Rolex wearers.
Quite well expressed and well tied up to amount of money versus personal joy. It's kind of the same thing. + too many other temptations in the collection :D
If you are that concerned about wearing your watch because you may scratch it and decrease it’s value, then you cannot afford the watch in the first place.
My advice will be to keep the explorer II. Why?: 1. GMT Function: You'll never know when you will need it but you WILL need it and it can be very helpful. 2. Timeless Design 3. Formal, yet Informal You can get alternatives for the explorer I and Sub, but the GMT? If I got the money, I'll buy GMT for functionality purpose
lovely watch. Had it but did sell as thought it looked to 'blown up' bit let's be honest, you wont ever NEED a gmt function anymore than you will NEED a chrono or any other complication or watch itself. it's all just fun
This is great content for anyone on the fence with buying Rolex. I wear my watches and don't see any point in owning them if you don't. They become investments and not collections. But each to their own.
I initially thought it was too small for my large wrists (7.75in). I decided to give it a try since it is such a classic design and found it to be one of my favorite watches. The size makes it extremely easy to wear. I dont have to worry about catching it on my my backpack when traveling, my seatbelt in a car or my shirt/jacket sleeve. It tends to just disappear until I need to tell the time.
As much as I am normally team Explorer, for your case, I would keep the Submariner. Good way to leave the brand while holding on to the icon. It is quite ubiquitous these days, but it's usually referred to the one sports watch to get in Rolex. One and done.
Yes sir it’s a tough choice. I would go more towards the Explorer 36mm. Small understated versatile goes with anything for any occasion. Plus it doesn’t look like a “Rolex”
@@Milofchg True that’s what gravitated me to the Explorer, however he finds the new Explorer to be a little too small and the taper is narrow (19 to 14). It doesn’t bother me considering I have a 6.5 wrist.
Rolex fanboy here. You articulate great points driving your ultimate decision. Personally, I would sell all but the Explorer II. Your concern about the bezel is unfounded. It is cheap to replace at an AD. I rotate my watches every several days and I beat on my 226570 Polar hard. It’s big. I have 8.5 inch wrists and it looks great on me but I am a big guy. It has great water resistance and a very useful GMT function. Even better, it flies under the radar. I can wear it at work with nobody noticing it. Black dial even more so. I also often wear a neovintage 40mm 16570 Polar and it truly is the perfect size. Same GMT Master II movement but slides under a cuff easily. Good luck with your decision.
You could replace all three with their Tudor counterparts: Ranger, Black Bay Pro, and the new Pelagos. It solves your issues: you can still create content, use on vacation (not too flashy), and use for actual diving and exploration.
you could but unless you were desperate for cash that would be a mad exchange. the ranger won't come close to the explorer. I think Pelagos for the sub or pro for exploter2 but id only do one of those for the tudors. Id look at Grand Seiko and Zenith as alternatives
There comes a time in every man’s journey throughout horology where the normal every day “jazz” just does not do it any longer, and you need to start listening to more advanced “jazz” to scratch that same itch. Same happens with Rolex. You want one , you want one… when you are still new to horology and then when you been around for a while and gone deeper into it all, you want pieces that are more special , more unique, … like a Fp Journe, an H.Moser, an Mb&F, etc. i think it’s a natural process on this fascinating journey.
Thank you for your great videos. You have become one of my favourite channels. I wish you good luck on your journey and may you find the pieces that fullfil you. That is what the hobby is all about. No matter of the price tag attached. High or low, find pieces that fulfill you and only you.
Sell them all! I sold off a lovely collection this year and have found so much freedom from the perspective of a brand new chapter in life. I let go of a sub date 116610LN, a datejust 41 wimbledon, and a rootbeer rolesor GMT, plus some beautiful JLC’s and omegas. I slimmed down my collection to just 3 excellent watches, and I’ve found so much enjoyment from rediscovering them and putting my money into other exciting aspects of life with zero regrets. I’m looking forward to hearing what you decide to do with your collection. Great video!
Well, we have to differentiate between new Rolex models and vintage ones. Those can absolutely have meaning to you and are not necessarily for showing off.
Exp 2 the keeper. Exp 1 would be gone already (too small). Sub (gone) only because it is not a GMT and I feel the Exp 2 is just more dynamic and a true long-term keeper in a collection with great contrast. Wear it, use it and make the scratches yours. I would guess it would wear long term perfectly. I am on the list for a Polar and when it comes in, I am hoping it will be the only Rolex in the WB as the YM (116622) will find its way out. I have often thought of my collection w/o Rolex and if I would be happy or not. I think I would manage with so many other brands to explore and my tastes constantly evolving I often feel like the collection is a 'road of memories' if you will. Good luck whatever you decide and great content as always.
The Submariner seems to be the most versatile of them, and the proportions are the best. It is the one model that has matured over the years like the 911. At the same time it’s not extremely special apart from the secondary market prices. As a beater you could go for the BB58. That’s one you wouldn’t have to be too worried about scratches or being too flashy
I would keep the Explorer 1, but would have second thoughts if the Exp2 had a polar dial. The modern Sub with the maxi case and ceramic dial is way too sceptic.
Btw the Explorer 36mm really measures at 36mm. The size is not on the case. It’s on the bezel that goes over slightly on the edge… Use a digital caliper and measure from 2-7 o’clock.
Meaningful to me means something really special like a bday gift, a big celebration. I love my exp 2 and I never plan to sell it. I love the size & weight. Seems like none really excite you, but I’d want at least 1 rolex in the collection. I still want a rb gmt but I’ll liking panerai lately. What a great hobby where we can trade &. Most items keep their value. It’s a win win. Regrets come when we sell the “irreplaceable.” Those are the gifts, special moment purchases…
@@BraveBeaters and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I can’t tell you how many times I have bought and re-sold Edc items. I haven’t really regretted any of them yet. This explorer 2 was for a big birthday so it’s not gonna go anywhere.
I have the same seamaster on rubber and a sub date, both 2022 models. I found that I wear 80 % of the time the Omega, dont know why. Omega is a bit more comfortable and for everyday work/sport use, rolex comes when iam free and around with friends and family. I like them both, and will keep them both.
It's pretty clear the size of the Explorer I doesn't do it for you, however objectively tempting it may be. The Explorer II is a looker but it's on the "polar" opposite of size and finally, the Sub is the icon you seem to feel an allure towards, from both a value and a timelessness angle. For me, a daily wearer of an OP 36LN, a Speedy and a G-Shock, the Explorer I would stay to maybe replace the OP if I didn't have it. The 41 OP Silver Dial sat in a box for half a year until I eventually sold it. It's 36 all the way for my 7in wrist, certainly a personal preference. And instead of the polar dial Explorer II I told my AD I wanted, I changed my mind and would rather put that money into a 321 Ed White Speedy. Good exercise and I thank you for sharing it.
Those are the three watches I want in my 3 watch collection except Explorer II polar (too many black dials). If I had all 3 and needed to keep only 1, the Sub would be the one. Thanks for the video!!
I always like your take. If Only more ppl thought this way! Iam suprised I haven't come across none of your videos with you reviewing a Sinn. Especially with you being in the army in the past. And you seem like you're at the point I am with Rolex. I purchased 3 Sinns in a couple month's 556i the U1 Ds limited edition of 500 and my favourite piece the Ezm 13.1. Because of your active life style diving etc. Sinn you just can't beat especially with the tech and price! #SinnCity
Out the 3, if I had to just keep one, it would be the Sub. The Exp 36 is too small & the Exp 2 a bit big. The Sub is perfection. I’d keep them all though, personally.
that sub isn't with the maxi case, massive squared off shoulders i personality think look awful although I do agree if it was the most recent ot older generations that are more refined
Personally, I’d keep the Explorer 124270, imo it’s the best offering in the current Rolex catalogue, but this opinion is obviously highly dependent on personal taste and preferences, as with all watches.
I would keep the explorer one. I have to admit I don’t have the issues people normally have with Rolex. I’ve learned to love the watches for their value as horological pieces - superb materials. accuracy and simplicity, so for me it’s not a matter of hype. My only issue is that I refuse to pay above the retail price, so I’m in peace. I have my explorer as an everyday watch.
After watching the video I see what you mean regarding the explorer and explorer 2. I'd sell both and keep the sub. It's one of the all time greats and it looks great on your wrist.
i think rolex should be flashy and you wearing them on accession not daily and not on vacation unless your vacation is 5 star hotel etc, if its daily it should be descreet like explorer everybody knows its a rolex quality but you know what you spend money wise
I sold my 16613 and got two omegas. I’m keeping my 116610 for life.. one Rolex for me. These guys that have 4-5 Rolexes all similar (gmt, subs, Pepsi, Batman’s, hulks) are crazy. Sure it can be an investment but it’s stupid to collect the same watch in different colors. Let’s face it no one needs a watch these days, and Rolex is largely just to flex.
Since you're not making a financial decision, it's really a matter of the heart. Which watch speaks to you most? Which do you pick up the most? I own an Explorer, Sub, and Explorer II (but slightly different generations than yours). I'd keep the Explorer as I like how low-key it is. Have you thought of selling all three? Then, if you really miss one, you're likely to be able to buy the same model for a similar price in the coming year or two? Great way to test which one you'd really miss.
I certainly can relate to all the points you cited, but do think you should not be in a rush to sell. I had 4 Rolexes then sold 3 late last year. I'm glad I kept one. I experienced essentially the same emotions and feelings you cited. Do I regret it? Yes and no. Getting back into Rolex is not that easy if you want to buy from an AD, but you can enjoy having money back to try other brands. Perhaps sell one, see how you feel and how that goes. Selling a Rolex is a lot easier and faster than buying one at retail. Just my free advice.
I agree with the logic! If You don't want a watch that LIMITS and ENSLAVES You, You need a G-Shock. I heard people who admitted thay cannot clap or sweat when they wear their vintage Rolex. But not sweating and no clapping is not a perfect option for a Hollywood actor...
I’d keep the Sub, all day everyday. If Polar Exp 2 were in the equation, then the decision would be much more difficult. I am in a similar situation. I have 4 Rolex , Sub , Polar Exp 2, OP41 Blue and DJ36 white dial with jubilee bracelet. Which one do I keep?
The sub and the dj36, I also have a sub an op41 and a Dj36, all of them 2021 or newer and would keep the ones I mentioned in the beginning if I had to let one go, the OP is a bit too sterile and does nothing than my dj36 can’t, also dj36 and sub are quintessential rolex.
DJ & SUB :D if the DJ is flutted :D In my view the polar exp 2 might look way too big. But I've never experienced one, So I am not 100% convinced that the white color makes it bigger.
@@BraveBeaters I guess it depends on the size of your wrist. In my case it measures 18.5 cm and I see it well. I also see well my DJ36, which by the way is smooth bezel 🙃.
to compare Timex and Bulova with Longines is very brave, considering that after the M40 or the Accutron neither brand did anything worth remembering. The explorer is a fantastic watch, if one could just buy it at a list price. Good video!
my first rolex is the 114060 sub no date. i hate to use the overused word, iconic, but it is just that. perfect size, perfect dial symmentry. just my opinion.....it will always stay in my collection.
I think the exp 1 is the one to keep. It means something, non show off watch, low key...the fact that it was released to commemorate the 1st ascent to the summit of Everest gives it sentimental character. The size makes it a true enthusiasts watch....the size is a celebration of its heritage. Not for someone who wants to give of the...hey look at me im wearing a rolex vibe..I think you should keep it man
Are you a mountaineer? The summit of Everest had nothing to do with most of us. It's not even a collective human achievement like landing on the moon. Where is the sentimental value?
Although i won't be able to ever own a Rolex, unless someone buys one for me or i inherit one and although all three are awesome choices, i would choose the Explorer II out of the three , mainly because of the size and because of the more toolish character that it projects, while still remains both dressy and casual. I would wear it all the time!!! Good luck with your choice!
@@BraveBeaters Thank you! Oh, and I would definitely keep the no date sub. Explorer at 36 is a little small, Explorer II at 42 too big. The sub fits just right, looks the business, is ever slightly different with the no date, and has the most pop. The sub is timeless, and can be worn in jeans or with a suit, so it’s also the most versatile. All beautiful pieces, and a nice problem to have. Thanks for the content. And thanks for recognizing in your journey you don’t need 3 Rolexes to be happy, as there is so much more to experience in the hobby!
Totally agree. No desire to wear a transactional watch like a Rolex. There's no enjoyment in it. I'd rather wear something that is a "hidden gem", that I'm unlikely to see anyone else wearing - and no one but a fellow watch enthusiast will even recognize.
More or less I did the same thing in last year. 1. Sold my explorer 1 and buy Smith's prs 25 2. Sold my op36 and buy bb36 3. Sold my omega moonwatch ( still no replacement) 4. Sold my omega seamaster 300M and buy steinhart ocean one 39 I just keep my daddy's 1974 model orient crystal 35mm. So what do you think ? Kind Regards Levent 3.
Hmm. I did something similar before I started the channel, I sold my speedy, seamaster and bb gmt to buy more affordable watches for reviews. For me it was tough, I remeber. beacause I had to sell more affordable pieces and save to rebuid the collection in time. But if such a move, brings satisfaction to you, why not :) Cheers, Levent!
Nice video! I would sell all three and get a vintage Submariner or Explorer II instead. In my view the more recent sports models are simply all too big, while the Explorer I is too small.
From an innovative horological standpoint, Glashütte Original, the Oris 400 movement and the co-axial movements are much more inreresting. From a financial standpoint you ought to keep the Rolexes.
Well said, I have two Rolex which I got it many years ago was basically celebration and for special occasion, I get so pissed with Rolex now as you can’t buy them and their stores are basically ghost, while non AD has heaps of it and overpriced. To me this brand has turned into a brand that only serves people who are not genuine, many has came to be offering higher value to buy my Rolex but I decline as it holds sentimental values.
I wouldn't sell any of them. People who hold onto their Rolex watches for the long haul, through good times and bad, are the ones who are always rewarded in the end. My Rolex watches will get passed onto my sons eventually, and will hopefully be a special thing they can each wear and will remind them of their father when I'm gone.
First time viewing one of your videos. I enjoyed it very much. I’ve been in a similar dilemma multiple times and have had most of the sports steel Rolexes in and out of my collection. The concern for re-acquiring at a premium is real but not impossible to overcome if you are patient. I’m currently in a Sea Dweller 16600t, 2006, Z series. I have a 7.5 wrist and am 6’2”, 220. I usually gravitate to larger watches, not so much for wrist presence but for visual balance between my wrist and hand size. Divers are my favorite. My budget is decent but not limitless so I’m often feeling uptight when there’s too much money tied up in any one piece. The other issue is ubiquity. It really bums me out to see so many subs (for instance) on other wrists. Yes, it confirms the quality of the watch, but also points towards the simple status value of wearing a Rolex to most of the people wearing them. I traded out of a maxi-case Sub into this Sea Dweller (and took some money off of the table). It wears a little smaller in dial size and diameter but has the subtlety and uniqueness I’ve been wanting in a Rolex (if that’s possible). I’ve had the 43 SD, a 41 Sub/date, a no date aluminum bezel (14060), same with date, not to mention numerous GMTS, explorer IIs. I’ve never felt comfortable keeping any of them. Or that emotionally attached. And I couldn’t figure out why. So this video was very helpful to understand my feelings which I could hear in your expression of your dilemma. I’d say sell them all and don’t look back. If you need to buy back one that you miss, you will find a deal if you are patient. I’m currently downsizing my collection to make more room for future acquisitions and to enjoy fewer watches. Too many becomes a headache for me personally and I feel like I’m neglecting them. I’ve thought of the Explorer I many times because I admire it as a marvelous design, but it’s frankly just too small visually for me and more of a museum type piece than a watch I would wear. If you keep anything, I would keep the EXP II; it’s unique and not one held by many collectors. Subs are everywhere, and with good reason, but I think there’s a compunction to have one as a collector that doesn’t stick ultimately for me. Hence, why I’ve bought and sold so many. I think this Sea Dweller is a keeper. I’ve adjusted to the visual size and the wearability (and I will wear it daily) makes it an ideal piece. It’s not one that everyone has and still scratches the Rolex itch in the diver category which is my favorite. I will miss the modern bracelet, which is a marvel. I will say the older bracelet type with solid end links wears light and still has a feeling of luxury and quality. I also wear it on a black strap from Everest that gives it a real skin diver feel. Thanks again for the content!
Awesome thoughts Anselm, thank you for sharing them with us! you are right in regard, firstly that Dweller is very cool! Second, I am glad the video was helpful for you, I thought I was the only one with this dilemma :) And 3rd, besides the money blocked, I do want to downsize my collection as well. and maybe put some money into other pieces that deserve to be collected and enjoyed. so it's not about getting rid of the rolexes, it's also about giving the chance to other good brand to be in the collection. and decrease the number of them as well. Thank you once again for your words :) Cheers, Andrei
Interesting question, and frankly a slightly surprising answer at the end. I actually thought you were going to end up keeping the Explorer 1, given that you compare both the Explorer 2 and Submariner to it and come up with it leading in both cases. So the order would be, in terms of what goes out: Explorer 2, Submariner, Explorer 1. That, by the way, would be my choice, with the nuance that I would ultimately not let go of the Explorer 1. It is too good, too classic, too versatile, and too beautiful a watch in my eyes.
We are going in opposite directions. I have a 16570 polar Explorer II on my wrist and I'm collecting an Explorer 124270 from my AD tmorrow. Diver is a 2551.80 Seamaster. But if I had to choose, I'd keep the Explorer for its true versatility and understated coolness.
As a fellow fan and owner of a Spinnaker Dumas, it goes to show that price tags matter. I like the Dumas and the Rolex Sub, I also don't worry about banging up my fun chunky Spinnaker.
Simple decision: sell the Explorer II. The other two are both great watches and I'd keep them; if you really want to sell two, sell the Submariner. The Explorer is pure class.
Sell them all, buy a 40mm explorer 2 polar and a BB58, pocket the cash! Or, get a Grand Seiko GMT and wear it everywhere. Each one has issues like you list, and you don't absolutely love any of them. This isn't a popular opinion, but I've never really liked the Sub. Just as you said, it's too sober for a diver, I don't connect to it. Personally I do genuinely like the 39mm explorer or 40mm polar dial explorer 2, but there are so many alternatives I would move both. Maybe look at the railmaster 1957 trilogy as an alt for the explorer 1. The only rolex I actually want is a panda Daytona, but so does everyone else!!
Tough decision for you. I have the Polar 216570. Bought this in my mid 50ies as my 1rst Rolex and start of a good collection. Will keep the Polar and give it rotating to my sons…later… ♣️
Im going to give an unconventional answer. Grand Seiko Winter, save the rest of the cash to buy stocks and other assets on sale when prices tank in 2023-2024, then in a few years you have way more than $30k to do whatever you want with. The watch choice is totally my subjective taste, tons of options in that price range.
I'd sell Sub first. I've had a couple of Subs in the past and ended up selling. I think you have a similar dilemma that I do. I like diver watches, and there are a ton of good divers out there. It may be the strongest watch "category" overall. So it's quite easy to find watches I like wearing just as much as the Sub. I also have an Omega Seamaster like you, and I love it. Also have an Omega PO. Some Seiko divers. As a diver lover, I couldn't just have one like the Sub. And that would lead to the dilemma you currently face - a lot of money locked up in a watch not getting much wrist time AND can be easily substituted with something else. There's a huge gap between the Sub and the other two in terms of ease of selling. But the next one would be Explorer I. Similar thought process. There are a lot of good time-only simple GADA type watches out there. Tudor's BB36. Omega AT. Basically if you have an Explorer I, you have to commit it to it being your ONLY watch, or at least your main watch. Otherwise it kind of gets lost in the shuffle and loses wrist time. Last one I'd sell (and the one I think you should keep) is the Exp II. Seems to be the only one of the 3 that has a tangible sentimental connection. But most importantly, it's a watch that doesn't have as many true competitors, and is a bit more unique than the above two. It's kind of easy to give it wrist time, especially if you get over your fear of scratching it up and losing value. If you commit to really wearing it, I think it's a watch that rewards you. But overall, I think you should do really keep both of the Explorers. They make a really good combo. Again, the Sub is the easiest sell because there are so many good divers out there.
Thank you Leo for your detailed thinking process, and It makes sense, I agree. Sadly the EXP2 is kinda parked for months already and I don't see how can I get it back into my rotation watches since I avoided to pick it up from the box for so long.
I agree with all of your reasoning for selling. Hard to justify owning such expensive pieces that don’t get wear. I sold my Explorer 2 and sold my Sub C no date and picked up a Grand Seiko SBGW231 and the new Omega Speedmaster Sapphire sandwich. I still own the 39mm Explorer 2 Mk2 and 39mm white oyster perpetual.
I’d say 38mm Aqua Terra, but you recently picked up the Seamaster 300. And I saw a SEAQ in the video (gorgeous by the way). So maybe something really in a different direction. Glashutte Panorama Lunar. Or Blancpain Leman dual time. Or a cool Zenith Defy or El Primero model (they released a few cool 38mm models).
I am of the opinion who has owned a Rolex can also sell a Rolex. Why, because you realize that a Rolex is also just a watch. I have a Datejust II and wear it very sporadically even before the hype. I simply have many more watches that I can wear without hesitation and that are just as fun. I couldn't bring myself to sell one yet for nostalgic reasons. But I would keep the Rolex Explorer GMT in your place.
Its stupid to sell now, as the prices will increase in the future due to Rolex entering the pre-owned market, people that think that Rolex will sell pre-owned for less are wrong and I tell you why: - The AD will have to get the pre-owned models to re sell them. - The AD will have to spend money servicing these pieces to allow them to get the certified pre-owned seal - Rolex never intended to make their models popular, they are shooting for exclusivity, in which case having the "certified pre-owned seal'' is a plus, hence a premium will be charged - every 2 years or so Rolex increases their MSRP, therefore they would have to pay more money when buying pre-owned, although they will pay less than a gray dealer, but they will sell it at a price above the gray market value due to the premium of the "certified pre-owned seal"
Really like your content. I simply couldn't buy into a Watch, that costs more than My car lol. Living in wales, i would Rarely ware it. I have a couple of casio's. A sekonda titanium thats been going For 27 years. (5 straps, 6 batteries) For the price point, i really like some Certina designs right now. A ds podium Chronograph. 28k is a lot of money for Other projects. (Watches) great content. Love the channel. 👍
One year ago I sold most of my watches to buy a Sub no date. One year later and I'm still searching for one, the AD's are laughing and the Grey market in Europe it's ridiculous expensive. Glad I kept my gshock!
NO attachment whatsoever to ANY of them? Not even the Sub? Only sell them if you're absolutely sure you have a better way to use or invest the money you'll get for them, or if you actually NEED the money right now for something important. There are much worse ways to park or invest your money than modern (or vintage) Rolex stainless steel sport watches, even with what's going on in the economy and stock market. They're a pretty good tangible (and usable) asset for you, including as a hedge against inflation. Anyway, I enjoy your videos, and wish you luck in the sale(s). You do good work.
Rolexes are hard for other people to get primarily because there are people who solely want to use them as alternatives to cash in saving account. Watches should be for use. It’s a shame that these “opportunistic investors” are strong enough of a presence that even with millions of level production volume it’s still not able to serve the real crowd who truly need to use them as tools.
If you worried too much about scratches you clearly can't afford and enjoy them at the same time. Rght move selling them all. Mentioned VC definitely not for you too. Maybe Brequet though. Btw I love my Rolexes. Every day tool watches.
Imho the Explorer II is a stripped GMT. Therefor I'm not a fan of it. The Explorer is a simple watch, and a great everyday watch. I wouldn't worry too much about scratching it. But it's a little bland. The Submariner is the ultimate tool watch, and the quintessential dive watch, but everyone and their grandma has one. For me it'd a toss up between the Explorer and the Submariner, if you were to keep one. Me personally, I'm saving up for my grail Rolex: The SD4K 116600. It's a Submariner on steroids, better balanced visually, and a severely underrated watch. It's a Submariner, but not the one everyone has, and is a far more interesting watch because of it. The only 40mm date watch without a cyclops. A helium escape valve. A limited production run. And a depth rating of 1220m. Of course I will take it diving, and it will incur scratches and dings no doubt, but it will be a watch with a history.
If someone wants to sell his worn Rolex watch to Rolex they will be be searching for it's serial number in their database. If it isn't in the database they will refuse to buy it. This simple fact will be pushing price of such "gray market" pieces down. This is also reason why to sell gray market Rolexes now.
My first Rolex was to celebrate surviving cancer. The last Rolex I got was to celebrate a huge promotion AND 20 years with my wife.
WOW! I am sorry to hear that. hope you recovered good! stay safe Jim!
Congratulations on all of those amazing accomplishments.
And my next Rolex is too feed my addiction 😉
Celebrate it with whores is better make more fun
I am curious to know which one would you keep and why,
But also If you had the entire amount available (aprox $30.000) what watches would you buy?
Please let me know in the comments, thanks :)
I'd keep the sub , just such a classic and versatile watch for what it is. For 30k I would personally get a Parmigiani Fleurier Tondagraph GT, a SeaQ panorama date and a Credor Signo 6870. Should be do-able in that budget if bought pre owned / grey market
I would sell one of the Rolexes and buy the Zenith Chronosport. That thing is a jewel
That's really nice!
EXP 1 with 20 mm between the lugs I assume, on that one, natos work :D
Once you sell them, that's when you miss them
I went through a similar dilemma recently with my 116900 Air King and 124060 Submariner.
I can relate to it, I just bought a brand new 124060 and haven't worn as much...
A beauty :)
Quite well expressed and well tied up to amount of money versus personal joy. It's kind of the same thing. + too many other temptations in the collection :D
If you are that concerned about wearing your watch because you may scratch it and decrease it’s value, then you cannot afford the watch in the first place.
You're a watch purist ❤️. A true collector. I look up to you as watch enthusiast for making these difficult decisions.
If he was a true watch purist, he wouldn't be using his watch collection as currency and talking about "value retention."
Most versatile…36mm.
I wear one on an 8 inch wrist with no problem. Most comfortable, go anywhere watch I own
My advice will be to keep the explorer II. Why?:
1. GMT Function: You'll never know when you will need it but you WILL need it and it can be very helpful.
2. Timeless Design
3. Formal, yet Informal
You can get alternatives for the explorer I and Sub, but the GMT? If I got the money, I'll buy GMT for functionality purpose
It's true, the Exp2, has it's own appeal and functions :)
There are a million better looking and cheaper GMT alternatives, Longine, Grand Seiko, Tudor
lovely watch.
That’s actually a good idea! Imagine how much parizer you can buy with all that spare cash! ;)
Terrible idea, thank you Edelmar
I see the Pelagos 39 as the ideal replacement of the sub. yup
you could but unless you were desperate for cash that would be a mad exchange. the ranger won't come close to the explorer.
Fine, true words you put in this comment Olivier :)
Thank you for your great videos. You have become one of my favourite channels. I wish you good luck on your journey and may you find the pieces that fullfil you. That is what the hobby is all about. No matter of the price tag attached. High or low, find pieces that fulfill you and only you.
@@olivierblomme6414 well said! 👍
Yes… in the watch collecting madness… less IS MORE! But that takes discipline … :) not everyone has it … :(
No watches can replace them. I feel though that the sub has more competition than the explorer models. Great vid and interesting considerations 😃
I would keep the Explorer 1, no doubt. But thats just me. At least the Sub is a no-date (which I strongly prefer).
Nice content, Like!
Thank you :)
I'd keep them all... No question about that!
Well, we have to differentiate between new Rolex models and vintage ones. Those can absolutely have meaning to you and are not necessarily for showing off.
agree 100%. My rolex reminds me of a point in time and marks that, nothing more. I'm just as satisfied marking occasions with JLC Zenith and Omega.
Hablar de Rolex ..es hablar de elegancia
I would keep the Explorer 1, but would have second thoughts if the Exp2 had a polar dial. The modern Sub with the maxi case and ceramic dial is way too sceptic.
Btw the Explorer 36mm really measures at 36mm. The size is not on the case. It’s on the bezel that goes over slightly on the edge… Use a digital caliper and measure from 2-7 o’clock.
I tried a mechanical one, and no matter how I put it, has still.. 35.5 :))
''Seems like none really excite you'' well said. It's more me than the brand :D
Kind of the same experience :) yes
Nice talk… but what we want to know is what watch are you wearing?
All Rolex watches get better with age but if I would have to choose one, I would pick the Submariner.
I got the explorer 1. But also a sprite and a nodate sub. I have zero doubts that explo is a keeper. Most comfortable watch i ever had
Small wrist so…I keep the 36 mm Explorer. Fine vid Sir
Thank you :)
Those are the three watches I want in my 3 watch collection except Explorer II polar (too many black dials). If I had all 3 and needed to keep only 1, the Sub would be the one. Thanks for the video!!
Thank you for your picks, John :) my choice as well
Agreed 100%
That’s bc the black dial looks better on the wrist. I love the polar to but the black contrast better
Keep the sub! As many have commented one and done. Glad you made the video and stay true to your beliefs. At the end of the day, enjoy what you wear.
One and done feel to be the right thing, yes :)
#SinnCity
Sinn is a very cool brand, sadly I haven't had the chance to see more actual models in flesh. I would love to own a U1
@@BraveBeaters You are doing yourself a disservice! Get on board. You won't be disappointed 👍🏾
We learn so much with comments like that
True, but you are right, it's a great piece!
If you got used to it and it's an everyday watch, that's really cool, indeed. enjoy it :)
After watching the video I see what you mean regarding the explorer and explorer 2. I'd sell both and keep the sub. It's one of the all time greats and it looks great on your wrist.
I think you are right…you can sell them all and find watches you can wear without having to fear to loose a lot of money. 👍
I had a similar situation. Had the sub no date, explorer 1 but a moon watch instead of exp2
i think rolex should be flashy and you wearing them on accession not daily and not on vacation unless your vacation is 5 star hotel etc, if its daily it should be descreet like explorer everybody knows its a rolex quality but you know what you spend money wise
Love your video reviews..! beautifully shot, and well presented..!
Thank you Alfred :)
Fair point. Unless, I don't know they ''collect'' them. or keep them as investment without wearing them.
Honestly I'm in love with square designs. Cartier santos&tank , jlc reverso should be some solid goals for 2023 :)
I sold all of my 4 Rolex models in the past 2 years and I don’t regret selling one! Don’t want to be a part of this Brand anymore…
Great advice, I will try to do it step by step and see how it goes.
AHHAHA, I can see that one with vintage rolexes, yes.
You need to keep all three. Your going to regret the loss of anyone of those. Don't do it.
DAMN! you're not helping me :))))
to compare Timex and Bulova with Longines is very brave, considering that after the M40 or the Accutron neither brand did anything worth remembering. The explorer is a fantastic watch, if one could just buy it at a list price. Good video!
You are right! In fact these were my last 3 watches worn at the watch meetups :D
Where did you end up selling these? I struggle to find a good source to sell expensive watches. How was your selling experience any videos on it?
I would keep the Rolex Explorer 1 as i like small classic watches but the logical thing to do is to keep the Sub and sell the others.
True! thank you Alex :)
my first rolex is the 114060 sub no date. i hate to use the overused word, iconic, but it is just that. perfect size, perfect dial symmentry. just my opinion.....it will always stay in my collection.
It is, I fully agree. a great, balanced watch :)
Super case looks ridiculous and was a serious design mistake by Rolex. Fortunately they have fixed it with the new 124060. Best submariner by far
@@whereRbearsTeeth funny how two of rolex's most iconic and hardest to get models have the super case......the "pepsi" and the "hulk"
@@divertiti but the watch commemorates that monumental acheivement...that makes it special.
Apologies not watch related, but what is that electronic white board you draw on?
It's the remarkable 2.
I sold two Rolex and saved money to buy a Vacheron Constantine Overseas with blue dial.... I don't miss the Rolex's..
Uuu, that's a nice catch! enjoy it!
Totally agree. No desire to wear a transactional watch like a Rolex. There's no enjoyment in it. I'd rather wear something that is a "hidden gem", that I'm unlikely to see anyone else wearing - and no one but a fellow watch enthusiast will even recognize.
Heck. Just cash out if there’s no connection anymore. They will just sit unwound.
I type this with my Exp1 36 on my wrist. 🙋🏻♂️🍷
haha! nice piece! :)
Well said. Thank you and keep doing great content.
More or less I did the same thing in last year.
1. Sold my explorer 1 and buy Smith's prs 25
2. Sold my op36 and buy bb36
3. Sold my omega moonwatch ( still no replacement)
4. Sold my omega seamaster 300M and buy steinhart ocean one 39
I just keep my daddy's 1974 model orient crystal 35mm.
So what do you think ?
Kind Regards
Levent
3.
@BraveBeaters thanks for your reply. Cheers from Netherlands
True and true.
Where do you see Blancpain in relation to this.
That's really nice :)
Second, I am glad the video was helpful for you, I thought I was the only one with this dilemma :)
And 3rd, besides the money blocked, I do want to downsize my collection as well. and maybe put some money into other pieces that deserve to be collected and enjoyed. so it's not about getting rid of the rolexes, it's also about giving the chance to other good brand to be in the collection. and decrease the number of them as well.
Thank you once again for your words :) Cheers, Andrei
@@BraveBeaters thanks so much for the kind reply. I look forward to seeing more videos from you and “watching” your watch journey!
Great vid and really well shot!
thank you :)
That;s a cool watch ,I have it as well :)
Currently thinking off selling for that reason.
I’ll replace with a GS quartz
What are the two non-rolex watches at 2:00?
Tough decision for you. I have the Polar 216570. Bought this in my mid 50ies as my 1rst Rolex and start of a good collection. Will keep the Polar and give it rotating to my sons…later… ♣️
That's really nice! :)
Hah, great advice! Indeed Investment in recession will pay off later on. Indeed :)
@@BraveBeaters call me! I can set you up! 😊
Excellent point of view. Made me ponder my own priorities
Thank you Mike :)
Where did you get the beautiful tropic straps from for the Sub? (3:08 and 7:38 in the video)
Oh… and I’m with you. Explorer II is first to go.
Great channel
I’d say 38mm Aqua Terra, but you recently picked up the Seamaster 300. And I saw a SEAQ in the video (gorgeous by the way). So maybe something really in a different direction. Glashutte Panorama Lunar. Or Blancpain Leman dual time. Or a cool Zenith Defy or El Primero model (they released a few cool 38mm models).
Guess what I need an aqua terra as well :D I love the new Defy as well :)
Sell all three and get an older Explorer1. It has the 20mm lugs and is from a time when it was a true tool watch, not a fashion item.
An idea to prospect as well. I need to see one in flesh.
So what did you end up selling? All three? My dream Rolex is your exact 124270 Explorer. I’d keep that over all else.
Its stupid to sell now, as the prices will increase in the future due to Rolex entering the pre-owned market, people that think that Rolex will sell pre-owned for less are wrong and I tell you why:
- The AD will have to get the pre-owned models to re sell them.
- The AD will have to spend money servicing these pieces to allow them to get the certified pre-owned seal
- Rolex never intended to make their models popular, they are shooting for exclusivity, in which case having the "certified pre-owned seal'' is a plus, hence a premium will be charged
- every 2 years or so Rolex increases their MSRP, therefore they would have to pay more money when buying pre-owned, although they will pay less than a gray dealer, but they will sell it at a price above the gray market value due to the premium of the "certified pre-owned seal"
All of them are fair points. thanks you for the assessment :)
Yeap! Appreciating assets. Only they are assets provided at some point you cash in the earnings. Or trade them at some point for a Brequet or a JLC :)
Really like your content.
I simply couldn't buy into a
Watch, that costs more than
My car lol. Living in wales, i would
Rarely ware it. I have a couple of casio's.
A sekonda titanium thats been going
For 27 years. (5 straps, 6 batteries)
For the price point, i really like some

Chronograph. 28k is a lot of money for
Other projects. (Watches) great content.
Love the channel. 👍
❤️ thank you very much! Uuu sekonda! Been a while since I heard about the brand.
What is the watch at 2 min.32?....thanks in advance.
I’d keep the EX2 - in my eyes it’s the complete watch.
Interesting choice :)
@@BraveBeaters yeah - I’m a huge fan of that EX2 line. I’d argue that an EX2 is the perfect ‘one watch’ collection.
One year ago I sold most of my watches to buy a Sub no date. One year later and I'm still searching for one, the AD's are laughing and the Grey market in Europe it's ridiculous expensive. Glad I kept my gshock!
Keeep all 3. But if it can only be one..... Submariner, no brainer
Nothing wrong in flipping Rolexes, right?
haha, true :)
Sadly no. I see them as values than watches to be worn and enjoyed :( As for investment, great assets, yes
Sell all three. Replace with Grand seiko SBGE255, Tudor Ranger, and Omega 300M sandwich dial. All three would cost the same amount as the submariner.
If you put it like this, yes. the pre actual Dweller is very cool. and yes, a tool to be enjoyed :)
If someone wants to sell his worn Rolex watch to Rolex they will be be searching for it's serial number in their database. If it isn't in the database they will refuse to buy it. This simple fact will be pushing price of such "gray market" pieces down. This is also reason why to sell gray market Rolexes now.
We will see, so far nothing changed :)
