My sister just got a puppy so I'm so glad I found your channel. And I'm even more glad that I just happened to buy myself the sigma 105mm 1.4 a few weeks ago. So it's great that you recommend that one!!
Love the honest reviews and all the information you poor into these videos! I currently have a 70-200mm F2.8 and LOVE it, but I will definitely be adding this to my list of must haves!
Hey, Jess 😃 so glad I found your channel! I'm gradually making my way through your back catalogue of videos & have learnt so many little tips and tricks already. I just wanted to say thank you!
Absolutely not a need-to-have, just handy in the moment! The smallest spot for focus is still used, then the Eye-Af kicks in and locks on - the spot does a lot of the work though and would be absolutely fine without Eye-AF 💪
That Dog Spot and then final one more question...do you ever work with flash (like softbox) when shooting animals / dogs? Or did you allready make a video on this topic?
Wow! Such a gorgeous effect from that 105mm. On a side note, what are your thoughts/knowledge on the Tamron SP 70-200 mm, f2.8? It’s the one I currently have. Is the one you have from Sony that much better or similar? I guess what I’m ultimately asking is whether it is worth continuing with that lens if I want to work professionally. Thanks for your response. :)
Love your videos! One minor correction - 2.8/2=1.4 is not doubling, but quadrupling your light. Your calculation computes double of the radius/diameter of the lens and since the formula for lens area is Pi*r^2, that's four times the light or TWO stops. Next f-stop from 2.8 is 2, then 1.4. Similarly, f/4 is half the light from f/2.8, not f/5.6 that your calculation would have suggested. To correctly calculate going down a stop, you should divide by Sqrt(2) or 1.4, not by 2. Also, an important notice to all who shoot crop sensor cameras - not only should the focal length be multiplied by 1.5-1.6 depending on the APS-C brand, but also aperture. So if someone is shooting 105mm f/1.4 on a Canon APS-C (crop of 1.62x), they're effectively shooting a full-frame equivalent of 170mm f/2.27. One huge benefit of full frames and medium format cameras - a 1.4 aperture is truly 1.4. Bigger sensor surface area - more light. The disadvantage is that 105mm is 105mm and not 170. 🙂 P.S.: Sigma 105/1.4 is my absolute go-to lens! I love everything about it!
Fantastic lens…I used it when I shot Canon but sold it when I switched to Sony…I keep waiting to see if Sigma will do some update for Sony…it was a beast to carry in the bag.
Okay I have a Sony a5100 camera I’m looking to buy a good lens to shoot pictures of my dogs. Do you recommend any good lens for that camera? I’m loving your videos new subscriber 👏🏼
I am really enjoying your videos as I am working on photographing dogs. I rented this lens and received it yesterday but my photos looks so grainy/noisy compared to my 70-200. I didn't know if it's just because I am not used to the lens or if there is something wrong with it. Do you have any ideas on why this could be? I can't find anything on it when I google it and I don't know anyone that has it to ask them. Thanks! And again, the videos are great! I did follow your advice on another video to a viewer that was having a hard time following you to slow down the speed and put subtitles up, that was very helpful! lol
You should not see any difference in grain from lens to lens, as noise is a sensor thing, not a lens thing. It could be that the image quality of this lens is higher, and therefore noise is more noticeable, but I would test both lenses in the same light conditions, on the same settings, before making a judgement on that!
@@ThatPhotographySpot Thank you so much for responding! I did take both lenses out and shot with them but need to shoot the exact same photo, I forgot to do that! Was making sure it wasn't my camera! I will do that tomorrow! I do like the look of the photos with this lens. It hasn't been the first time I have rented a lens with something wrong with it, so it may be that! Again, thanks for responding. I am excited to keep learning from you!
What lenses would you recommend for a Nikon d750 please? I’ve been watching your videos and I’d love to be able to take professional pictures of my dogs but I don’t know where to start lol, I’m dyslexic so I’m having a real problem understanding camera settings shooting in automatic mode or program but I’m trying my best to shoot in manual. @@ThatPhotographySpot there's been news going around about Tamron's upcoming 150-500mm F5.0-6.7 full frame lens with Linear Motor AF. I'm pretty excited about that. ... but what focal length range do you think is actually best for outdoor dog photography? Is 500mm too long?
Wow somebody else who also loves to shoot dogs. Best lens I’ve found is the 135mm F1.8 GM. It is so fast and sharp..... especially when it comes to fast action.
I have just purchased a Nikon d500 and am yet to buy a lens. What lens would you recommended for me to take action shots and portrait shots of my 18 month old energetic beagle? I was looking at the Nikon AF-S 24mm-70mm f/2.8G ED but want some advice before rushing in.
I have a D500 myself and I have really loved my Nikon 70-200 2.8 for fast action - perfect combo, but I've recently also got a Sigma ART 135mm 1.8 and have been falling in love with that as well

@@cosmicfoxglove1047 so for versatility I will choose the 70-200 2.8. I am still in love with the 135 tho and use it often, but with paid shoots for action and hunt tests etc I use the 70-200.

I have the sigma 24-70mm f2.8, do you think the pictures will also look great with f2.8? Maybe I need to invest after I had some shootings into a sigma art lens with f1.4. What's you opinion regarding to the f stop?
The F2.8 is fine, we use that more than anything else! If you're using a 24-70mm lens, you won't get the same image as you would with a 100mm lens. So we'd suggest looking at a 70-200 2.8.
Hi Jess, I'm loving your videos, I have a Sigma 105 macro 2.8 lens have you ever tried dog photography with a similar lens? I might give it a go for the dogs.T hanks.

I have seen so many videos but I really don’t get a real good friend with the lens, I don’t get those sharp dog photos that I want. Maybe one of 20 pictures is ok. I have zero regrets buying the Siggy 105 1.4 from a UK shop even though it was expensive. If I had to keep just one lens from my collection, it would be this one ❤😍
New subscriber here. I've been watching your videos all night in preparation for my first dog session later today. Thank you for the great info. im really really really wanna get the 70-200mm f2.8 but since I do have a budget I wanna spend it wisely, what would you say is the main fault of the 70-200?
Honestly, it doesn't really have any faults. It's an all round solid lens that is versatile and beautiful. It's an upgrade to any kit lens on the market and should be a staple of most dog togs kit bags, just in case they ever need that special friend who can make it work when the "specialists" can't (105, 85, 135 etc)
I agree. When I take my pooch out in the morning, sometimes I only take my 20 f1.8, other times 55 f1.8 - just for variety. But 90% of the time I use the 70-200 f2.8. There isn't a downside to it, I have got many fantastic shots with it: fast focusing, quick to zoom, sharp, great quality. You can't go wrong :)
For portraits with a little distance I love love love my canon 135mm. I have a love hate relationship with my canon 70-200mm haha Close up photos I like my 50mm. I NEED a wide angle lens though!
Tossed between up Sony 70-200mm f/4 and Tamron 28-75mm for my full frame and APSC Sony mirrorless cameras... Your dog photos are absolutely lovely I also like the rendition achieved when use my Legacy Meyer Gorlitz 135mm f/2.8 lens (originally for a Pentacon camera) on a Sony crop camera adapted with a Kipon Focal Reducer which provides an equivalent 141mm f/2.0. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer but, the rendition is beautiful. I don't use this for fast moving subjects but, I love it for still outdoor portraits of dogs. I would like to try the 70-180mm f/2.8 Tamron but, I have not had the opportunity... I do like the animal eye auto focus capability of the later Sony morrorless cameras.
The only lens that competes for my money is the Samyang AF 135mm f1.8 - I would never have believed it myself, until I saw a review! It's a hell of a lot lighter and cheaper, and I swear it's as beautiful as the Sigma - pin-sharp wide open, and the extra length negates the aperture difference. If they made them for Nikon I would buy one for sure!
I’m currently looking at the Sony g master 135 mm 1.8 or the sigma. Do you have a link for the samyang 135mm f1.8 review in comparison to these other two?
Hi, stunning work. I too like my 70 to 200mm for my doggy portraits. As a Nikon user I use the Tamron 70-200 vc usd. Also we're lucky I the fact Nikon do a 105 f 1.4g. Weighs in at 989g and 82mm filter thread. My only concern is the dept of field. I find I have to shoot wider and crop the image, otherwise the pooches eyes are tack sharp and nose is out of focus. Then you have to stop down to 2 and 2.8 anyway. Maybe I'll have to go to a crop sensor so it naturally pulls you away further from subject to increase depth of field in order to utilize lower stop value in woody shots.
I do not worry about noses in focus when shooting outdoors - the eyes are the most important thing and I have yet to be penalised in competition or turned away by a client for soft noses with tack sharp eyes :)
@@ThatPhotographySpot, thank you for your reply. Gosh! I've taken many beautiful images of my Border Collie over the years- soft buttery bokeh, dramatic lighting, dawn, dusk, misty rays through the trees, etc. I've refrained from entering into competitions because I never thought they were sharp enough throughout the face. I've always been looking for that "sweet spot" between the nose and eyes. Haha.. looks like I'm being too critical on myself again. Thank you.... you've given me little bit of a boost!
Jess, recently found your channel and I love every bit of it. But I will say, although the Sigma 105 f1.4 is an exceptional lens. I still think that the Nikon 105 f1.4 is superior for Nikon shooters. I rented the Sigma and the Nikon before making a purchase and found the Nikon to be even more incredible. Just thought I'd put that out there. I also own the Sigma 135 f1.8 and it's one of my favorite lenses as well. You have great taste in lenses 😊.
Just checked your 'Stops video' and you make the same mistake you make in this one at 3:15. If you go from F/2.8 to F/1.4 it will be two stops brighter, not one. F/2.0 is one stop brighter. It's one of those areas in photography where things follow a squared nature. If you half the F-stop number on the lens, you would double the aperture's DIAMETER. The AREA of the aperture would now be 4x what it was, i.e. two stops brighter. To double the light you need the area to double, which would need the diameter to be multiplied by 1.4 (square root of 2). On your camera if it is set for third stops, it will take you six clicks to go from F/8 to F/4, that is two stops. (I edited this BTW Jess, I mixed up halves and doubles LOL).
I'm going to need to read this 400 times to absorb it correctly - me and numbers are not friends. Ok, so do we square root to gain stops with aperture and square (or double?) to lose stops with aperture? I was always taught that it is double and halves, nothing regarding squares but I'm absolutely happy to be wrong (sadly, it won't please my number-phobic brain).
@@ThatPhotographySpot To gain or lose a stop you multiply or divide by approximately 1.4. Take the sequence 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11,16. Each is 1.4x higher, each is one full stop. As you can see, 1.4 is two stops 'faster' than 2.8. 1.4 is approximately the square root of 2.
BEAUTIFUL!!! I have been looking around to purchase a 1.4 lens for my Nikon D3100. So you know anything gay will go with it that’s on the cheaper side?
A 50mm is the most affordable prime out there and as you have a cropped sensor camera, a 50mm is actually a 75mm I think, so this would be great for you 🤓
Thank you for this! I have the same Sigma lens and I don’t use it nearly enough and I’ve had zero luck with the subject moving ☹️ Otherwise, I absolutely love this lens. I just subscribed to your instagram so I can see more of your work with it😁
Yes, the lens is slow to focus with the elements moving slower than required. It is more than fast enough for panning action or portraits, but direct action (running towards you), it is too slow 😊
Zoom lenses are stupid in general and newer as good as the best Prime Lenses ! For dog portraits I can very highly recommend the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 and the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM on Sony A7RIV/A7RIVA !
Do you mean never? As in "never as good"? It depends on what your priority is - if its IQ then yes a prime will usually win, but if its dollar or sales volume, the variety from a zoom in a pet session is a core factor in increased sales. The world is not black and white, nothing is stupid or not, good or bad, there are places for everything. We've done a 135 1.8 GM review, it's super but works best on an A9ii in our opinion. Have a fab day! 😊
Hello Jess! I have a dog called Jess too, and have an Instagram for her, but I can't buy professional editing softwares just yet, so I am using the basic version of Pixlr. I was wondering if you know how to make the dogs' eyes pop using Pixlr? Or if you could recommend another free editing app. Thank you :)
Sorry to disappoint but the 135 produces more bokeh when you do some little math. Even a f2 does more bokeh than the 105. However the 105 is still great
Hi there nearly subscribe to yourself great channel I've not done any dog photography is yet but I am looking into it. As a friend would like to photograph their dog I have also notice that at the start of the video it was slightly InFocus in out of focus not sure if you have noticed this But I thought it.
Hi Scott, it could be that your device started in lower resolution then buffered up to higher resolution? As I tend to shoot all my videos at f2.8 with the Sony's Wide focus enabled, it will grab the closest object to the camera if it is held there for a while so at times it grabs my engagement ring as the highest area of focus, however, usually it does stay relatively reliably on my face?
Yes it's so hard. I think if you have a zoom lens, it's such a good idea to track what focal length you use most often. Everyone tends to have a preferred range and over a few different shoots you can narrow down options for the future 🤓
My sister just got a puppy so I'm so glad I found your channel. And I'm even more glad that I just happened to buy myself the sigma 105mm 1.4 a few weeks ago. So it's great that you recommend that one!!

What would be the best lens for equine photography x
Check out our equine videos, they should help! 🤗
For portraits with a little distance I love love love my canon 135mm. I have a love hate relationship with my canon 70-200mm haha
Close up photos I like my 50mm. I NEED a wide angle lens though!
Hi Jess, how’s the lens a now you had more time with it ?
Still the bokeh master but the 135mm 1.8 is fast as a button, and smaller!
Will that lenss work with a sony a7r iii ? Thank you in advance for your answers
Yes it will 👌🏼
Do you find that you loose sharpness when using a zoom lens over a prime lens? Or if it’s good quality, you don’t see a difference?
Tossed between up Sony 70-200mm f/4 and Tamron 28-75mm for my full frame and APSC Sony mirrorless cameras...
Your dog photos are absolutely lovely
I also like the rendition achieved when use my Legacy Meyer Gorlitz 135mm f/2.8 lens (originally for a Pentacon camera) on a Sony crop camera adapted with a Kipon Focal Reducer which provides an equivalent 141mm f/2.0.
Have you tried the Tamron 70-180?
No but others I know have and I’ve heard great things!!
I may or may not also own a 135 1.8 🙊🤭🙈
I agree!
Curse you Jess making me spend more money!! I absolutely love your tutorials. So much to learn!
Hahahahahaha
*we take no responsibility of any accidental purchases made due to our videos 🤣
On the up side, your new lens is 4x brighter not 2x. :-)
I've now confused myself even more. Say we were at f4, gaining 1 stop would take us where?
@@ThatPhotographySpot To gain or lose a stop you multiply or divide by approximately 1.4. Take the sequence 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11,16. Each is 1.4x higher, each is one full stop. As you can see, 1.4 is two stops 'faster' than 2.8. 1.4 is approximately the square root of 2.
Aaa gotcha. I'm going to make a note of this - thank you for your correction, every day is a learning day 🤓
that was 2 years - do you still care the 105 with you?
It come out to most parties, occasionally gets a chance to dance. It really depends on the shoot 🙌
Beautiful photos.
Thank you!
Can you recommend what beginner camera for dog portrait?
probably Sony A6400 or A6000 if budget is little tighter 😊
@@ThatPhotographySpot thank you for recommendation
How about canon 80D af speed? Is it still good?
BEAUTIFUL!!! I have been looking around to purchase a 1.4 lens for my Nikon D3100. So you know anything gay will go with it that’s on the cheaper side?
A 50mm is the most affordable prime out there and as you have a cropped sensor camera, a 50mm is actually a 75mm I think, so this would be great for you 🤓
That Dog Spot thank you!
That's the last lens I bought, it is TRULY awesome 😍🥰
It really is! I just want to keep going out and photographing things 😂❤️
I’m in love with my 105 also 🥰
👍 😊
Thank you for this! I have the same Sigma lens and I don’t use it nearly enough and I’ve had zero luck with the subject moving ☹️ Otherwise, I absolutely love this lens. I just subscribed to your instagram so I can see more of your work with it😁
You're so welcome!
If the camera is good for movement like an eos m6 mark ii would the fact this lens has a problem with moving objects effect the quality
Yes, the lens is slow to focus with the elements moving slower than required. It is more than fast enough for panning action or portraits, but direct action (running towards you), it is too slow 😊
@@ThatPhotographySpot so what is the difference in quality and performance between this and sigma 50mm
Whats the lens?
Would that lens be good for puppies? Thry hardly ever stand still
I'd probably use a 70-200 2.8 personally!
What sony camera do you have I have a7riv
The A7r3 bodies here!
i own this beast too. love the results so much!!
Great minds think alike 😉
@@ThatPhotographySpot hehe definitely yes. i just added u on insta: instagram.com/a_l_e_x_s_o_b/
got my first dog-shoot last weekend:)
This is a aps-c lens right?
No, full frame but you can use it on APS-C cameras and other cropped sensors too 👍
Sigma 105 1.4 is the lens
Love sony
:)
Just wish Fuji and Sigma could work together :( But I love Fuji too much to leave it *sigh*
Unfortunately I can't help here :( RUclips may have the answer though?! Look for brightening and masking in the program and use the two together 🤓
Sorry to disappoint but the 135 produces more bokeh when you do some little math. Even a f2 does more bokeh than the 105. However the 105 is still great
What lens is it?
This information can be found in the video 🤓
J ai le 135mm sigma, lui prend les sujets en mouvement au moins. Le 105, est beaucoup trop lent en autofocus
Hi wonderful
The most confusing descion for me was to selective a lens
Select*
Yes it's so hard. I think if you have a zoom lens, it's such a good idea to track what focal length you use most often. Everyone tends to have a preferred range and over a few different shoots you can narrow down options for the future 🤓
hehe i have no lenses :(
Add it to your future wish list!
Sorry 3:23
Way too much talking and posing!
Hope you find your perfect channel 👋
