Diablo 4's Season 2 Battle Pass Is Still Bad

  • With Diablo IV's Season of Blood starting in a few days (October 17) you may be considering buying the season's battle pass. But you really shouldn't. The microtransactions in this game are crazy, and just prove that Activision Blizzard has earned it's reputation of an incredibly greedy company. I do really enjoy playing this game and hope they can salvage what's left of it's reputation in the future. Maybe Microsoft’s acquisition will help.
    Thank you for watching! Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe to the channel. :)

    Random comparison, but it's crazy to me that it's like $30 for one armor set in this game, while like the same cost gives you full on expansions in games like The Witcher, Skyrim, etc 😭

    I think the Battlepass here isn't the issue, it's us as the consumer who failed, and there's no one to blame honestly. I don't know who started the Battle Pass strat but it worked, some game community loved it, some didn't but definitely more devs/publishers are riding on the Battle pass strat simply because it works. Market it as optional, some will see it as them being "exclusive" since they can buy it, some will see it as unnecessary simply because they know the marketing strat behind it or does not have the means to purchase one.
    If the battle pass hasn't been that accepted since the beginning, no one will be putting these into games and will only sell cosmetics. It's sad, but it's reality.

    • @HolyGrailGaming
      @HolyGrailGaming  9 месяцев назад

      That’s pretty true, if consumers stopped buying battle passes companies would stop throwing them in every game. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s scummy charging tons of money for dlc after charging $100 for a game.

    I thought the platinum is being carried to the next season and summed with the one from the next season. If it doesn't work like that then please skip everything I write below.
    But if this is indeed the case then the picture is a quite different. If you are looking short term season by season - it may looks like sh!t.
    In long term though for every battle pass you buy you gain 2 more for free (in real scenario slightly less than 2), effectively reducing the price to 1/3 (assuming you are completing the battle pass and claim all rewards and keep all platinum for purchasing new battle passes). Again people may argue whether it is worth it but still 3.3 $/€ per season is quite different than 10 $/€ per season.
    Because the platinum you get could be used to get more platinum and that platinum for more etc.
    So the reward from the BP is not just 2/3 of the new Battle pass. It is: 2/3 + (2/3)^2 + (2/3)^3 + (2/3)^4 etc which is the sum of geometric progression.
    The formula for it is:
    S = A1/(1-r) (for multiplier < 1 which is the case here),
    where A1 is the first term - in our case 2/3
    and r is the ratio - again 2/3
    (2/3)/(1-2/3) =
    (2/3)/(1/3) = 2
    In other words if there are infinite amount of season for every season you pay you get the 2 for free as I mentioned earlier.
    Let me give you a practical example for a long term (with the disclaimer that Blizzard don't change anything in future for the price and platinum reward, you complete everything and you are not spending it for anything but another BP):
    You pay for 10 BP and just stockpile the platinum
    So you have 10 BP from the paid one and 6660 platinum. That 6660 platinum is enough for 6 free BP + 660 leftover.
    So you have 10+6 BP and 3996 platinum from these 6 seasons and 660 leftover for a total of 4656. These are 4 more seasons and 656 leftover.
    You have now 10+6+4 BP and 4*666 = 2664 + 656 = 3320. These are 3 more for free and 320 leftover.
    Now you have 10+6+4+3 BP and 3*666 + 320 = 2318. These are 2 more for free and 318 leftover.
    10+6+4+3+2 and 2*666 + 318 = 1650. One more free + 650 leftover.
    10+6+4+3+2+1 and 666+650 = 1316. One more season and 316 leftover.
    10+6+4+3+2+1+1 and 666+316=982. And this is next time you will have to pay.
    So with the 10 payed ones you have 27 total (the higher the initial value of the payed ones the closer you will get to the theoretical value from the sum of geometric progression) and 1 almost done. And this one is "almost done" and not completely done because in fact the reward is not 2/3 as initially assumed but slightly less (it would have been 2/3 if the season costs 999 and not 1000).
    Some could point out that: "this game ain't gonna live 27 seasons it will die way sooner". Possibly. Or it may get a lot better and be the big title it is meant to be. We don't know. And either way this was just an example how that gaining/spending currency would work out in long term.

  • @XImpaler420X
    @XImpaler420X 8 месяцев назад

    I think it's a bit of an over reaction. Take a game, say Genshin Impact, it has a battle pass that doesn't give you any currency to buy the next one. At least here you are getting a free battle pass basically every other time. I will say though that it's sad that the coolest looking items are locked behind a paywall instead of dropping as items in-game. When you're dealing with a live service game, funds have to come from somewhere to keep development funded. If this were a single player game, sure, pay the box price and you're done.
    What you have to keep in mind, is these companies wouldn't monetize this way if it wasn't working. So no matter how much it sucks, you have many more people buying the battle pass that not.

    I think Diablo IV is a solid 6/10 game. Decent graphics, decent sound, decent mechanics. It is hindered by the boss fights (particularly when you hit that 50 level) which are just brainless, scaleable enemies (what’s the point of having different type of enemies if they all feel pretty much the same) instead of how it was resolved in Diablo II, poor cosmetics (all unique items I found looked samey, for the last 10 hours I was wearing 3 different unique helmets and all 3 were visually identical). Ultimately, I got bored of it before finishing off Lilith. I played until the end out cause I wanted to see the ending video but it felt like work.
    I don’t hate Diablo IV. But I feel it is held back by mechanics that are too frustrating to ignore.
    Microtransactions wouldn’t bother me (as I was never going to purchase anything anyway) if there was more loot variety in the game. But I know that it is exactly because of the microtransactions that the unique aren’t unique. I’m supposed to want to purchase that platinum armor. If unique are already cool, why would I pay for a platinum items? DNC that way of thinking is terrible.
    6/10 isn’t terrible but I’m sure developers wanted something better.

      @@HolyGrailGaming how would you rate Diablo II? For me it was 10/10. Now - I had fun with D4 initially but all the problems I mentioned did not exist in D2. At the same time, I do not think D4 improves upon any of the important mechanics (except for the graphics and - to some extent - movement). In a vacuum, if there was no progress made in the video-game industry, I am sure I would rate it higher. However given the context (existence of much better rivals - including previous games in Diablo franchise, outdated or bad game mechanics and some baffling development choices) I think it is fair to say it is a 6-7/10 game. It is still better than average but not by a large margin. 30 hours of entertainment is pretty good, it is just a pity it gets hindered by the above mentioned flaws.

  • @tomasnovellino5980
    @tomasnovellino5980 10 месяцев назад

    The complaints about D4 being boring is not coming only from those with multiple lvl 100. Those are the loud voices, people who put hours into a game not just for fun but as part of content or personal goals. The game is boring because there's nothing (fun) to do. And not just at level 100.. by level 42 it is already down the hill, and by the time you reach 50.. the only thing to do is nightmare dungeons, which are boring because nothing else is challenging and eventually those nightmare dungeons are repetitive.
    Complaints about D4 being boring are more from people quiting when they find out game ends at level 40.. and you still have 60 levels of "end game" grinding for nothing 😴

    • @HolyGrailGaming
      @HolyGrailGaming  10 месяцев назад

      My personal opinion is if you gave up on the game at level 40 you probably haven’t experienced the best parts of the game (breezing through Torment difficulty and taking on crowds of hundreds at a time), but I do agree that the endgame is set up to heavily favour Nightmare Dungeons rather than things like side quests which is a bummer. I still think most of the complaints come from people with insane amounts of gameplay, but that’s just what I’ve personally been seeing online.

    • @tomasnovellino5980
      @tomasnovellino5980 10 месяцев назад

      @HolyGrailGaming Just to clarify... I didn't stop playing at level 40. I stopped at level 83 at launch and level 77 in season 1. However, I got bored around level 60 in eternal (pre S1), and by level 42 I was bored 😴 in S1. When I see rain 🌧 from my window I do not need to go outside to know I'll get wet. Just as I don't need to play a game I'm already bored just to get to the fun part.
      Besides, toer 3 and 4 nightmare dungeons have no different mechanics... only more damage and mobs explode 3 times instead of 2 after death.
      I think those games that you need to invest 70% or more in boring game play to reach to the final fun part have an audience....but that's not me.
      And I am only a small voice with zero influence in the gaming community... but my feeling was shared by many and as proof... D4 S2 has promised to reduce levelling time by 40% aprox. So maybe more people will reach level 100... and hopefully, that end of the long looong looooooong end game that starts too soon pays off.
      I will play S2 because D4 is fun for a while... my only hope is that fun last longer than previous 2 starts

    Everything done now is based on providing 'services' after the product is sold/licensed. That is why you see companies moving away from physical copies of most things, from music CDs, to books, to games, to business software.
    This creates a situation where you can sell someone a license to use something, vs. the actual thing, and they must subscribe in perpetuity in order to keep using it.
    It's a license to print money for the product vendor.
    It sucks big time, but it is the way the world is moving, across the board.
    There will be a tipping point when people decide to opt out of a lot of the superfluous garbage, and that will inject temporary sanity into things, but until that point is reached, prices for non-essential things will increase as long as the market will bear it.
    Your point is 100% valid. Business is all about s**t and lies, always has been, always will be. Ephemeral products (i.e. no physical medium) just shines a brighter light on this.

    • @HolyGrailGaming
      @HolyGrailGaming  10 месяцев назад +1

    And their season pass is complete trash and on the micro transactions subject check out Destiny battle pass and store it’s way worse. And you crying about Diablos micro transactions is hilarious because you believe that these devs make this game for YOU to be happy and satisfied….. wake up bro it hasn’t been like that since mid 2000s and enough people are still going to buy and play because most people don’t rely on a battle pass to pay for another battle pass most have jobs and sink their money into a game they enjoy like Diablo knowing it’s a waste of money in the long run

      Dawg I’m just saying it sucks and I think most people agree that paying for microtransactions is pretty lame. To each their own though!

    50 hours are rookie numbers for an rpg especially for an mmo, the game has a good foundation with some QoL changes and some extra content like in D3 you know extra torment difficulties and new content it'll be a lot better. i've personally spent thousands of hours playing skyrim nevermind how long i played WoW for before they messed it up

      Sadly 50 hours is usually all the time that I can dedicate to most games regardless of genre because of work and school. If an RPG doesn’t entice me to play more once I’m close to that 50 hour mark that usually tells me all I need to know about the game. But I do agree with you that minor improvements will make D4 into a really great game down the road! Also, I’ve personally spent thousands of hours playing Oblivion and probably Runescape back in the day so we’re on the same page 😅

      they totally need to add some things to make it more enjoyable and to entice people to keep playing. I'm a long time elder scrolls fan been playing since elder scrolls 3 morrowind, skyrim has been out a long time now, looking forward to skyblivion. Played many hours of d3 so i'm hoping they can make this just as good. thanks for the reply@@HolyGrailGaming

    Go play tears of the kingdom. You should be able to pull 500 hrs and still be having fun

      I actually have a full review dropping next month. Good game, definitely not a 500 hour game for me, but I enjoyed it overall.

    Damn I must agree with you a lot.
    Also - remember that paid expac is also coming - probably 40$ every 12 months.
    This game is such a cash grab sadly :/

    D4’s battle pass is bad because this is a top down game where you can already barely see your character and that’s before the million and one effects on screen. So the value of cosmetics are pretty low at a baseline. I can’t imagine why people would spend money for that.

    i'm sry but why show the act man's video as an example for the d4 bad bandwagon? he has explained clearly each of his points why d4 is bad.

      @HolyGrailGaming  10 месяцев назад

      Don’t be sorry, I just found it on reddit as the first search when I typed in Diablo is bad. I’ve actually hated on his videos before but after going back and watching that one he does a good job of explaining his opinions. Though I do think he heavily blows his complaints out of proportion

      @@HolyGrailGaming Yep, he also jumped on the bandwagon and his complaints are mostly not consistent with the rest of the playerbase.
