- I love collecting physical video games, however big corporations are making it increasingly difficult for gamers to choose anything other than digital media. This current generation (PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series) will likely be my last gaming generation choosing physical games over digital, and that's really unfortunate.

The day you can’t redownload your bought digital games because the company discontinued the service. You will realize that it was a rental and you never owned it. It gets corrupted, the hard drive stops working either way you loose. To this day I can still play ps1 ps2 and Super Nintendo games on my old console because of physical games including other old consoles.
You can still redownload Wii games from the Wii shop channel to this day
then just get a zip file of the game you want to keep like with gog you can just put all your zip file games on a 2 treabyte hard drive if you worry about it
Don't do it! I decided, around 10 years ago now, that I would go all digital. For a lot of the same reasons actually. But now, with companies pulling games out of their libraries, subscription models getting more expensive, and increasing home entertainment and internet costs, I decided that I would go back to physical. At the very least for games that I really want. I get the frustration, but looking back at things like the PS2 and Dreamcast, I wish I hadn't sold off my old games. Think about the future. In 10 years from this point will Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo still be around? Will they purge their libraries? Will they be making HD remasters of games you actually have in storage? It's better to own a few physical copies than to have access to a wide digital library in the long run, in my opinion anyway.
EDIT: Sorry, I did the thing where I comment before finishing the video. I sense you're beaten down and feel trapped, but I believe the consumer always has a voice ( don't forget that consumer rights exist). I think maybe if we became more conservative with what we buy, these big companies will notice. Not all games require a day 1 patch, if my memory serves me right I think FFXVI and RE4 remake played just fine on day one. And I also think it's these big AAA games that get all the attention for patches and greed. There are plenty of smaller games out there that don't follow these practices. The big companies notice spending trends. Wait and see if a game is worth it, you don't have to play it on day 1. Buy physical, don't buy the things you dislike. Things can change, it's within our power as consumers. Don't allow them to trick you otherwise!
I appreciate you editing after watching the rest! Yes you nailed it, I’m just frustrated having to wait an extra few days to play games because I opted for a physical (Diablo 4, UFC 5 and a ton more had early access for digital only). Also, I really want to play Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 and both of those are digital only which is what I predict a lot of games will be in the future 😔

I know, Nintendo has greedy similarities to Disney and the other triple AAA companies.

It's a very big problem in Russia right now. All of the big companies decided, that they don't want to sell games in our region anymore. And that sucks, because i have a big library in my Steam and Xbox store. Now you forced to change region or buy physical copies. And in that situation, I think it will be a good thing to buy all physical games in the future, to prevent them from "stealing" your games back.

Don’t just give into what billion dollar corporations want. Support physical games that are included on the disc/cartridge, avoid digital only games, wait for a physical release, only purchase (digital) games you really want to play, instead of everything that looks good, play more older games.
It might seem hopeless but, if enough people push back companies will have to rethink their digital ambitions. (or at least how they license digital media)
I went digital when I couldn't find Batman Arkham Knight on disc in 2015, and honestly, should've done it years earlier. "You don't own the game, it can be taken away", you can scratch up a disc too, harddrives can fail. In life nothing is guaranteed, lmfao. Why build a bunker of things you do not actually use, that your kids or grandkids won't use? Fear I think. That's ultimately it. Fear of change.

the most disgusting thing I ever witness in my time of gaming in 30 years of playing games was a game physical case with no physical game in it, but a paper with a code writtenon it, and no guide manual. Since when are companies so out of money they wanna save money not giving you a simple manual? We all loved those back in the days. Its just disgusting to see a game code and no physcial form of the game to hold in your hand, and it makes no sense why even sell the empty case like that.
The manual thing isn't about money, actually. It's more about it kinda being a waste of paper and such.
@@James11111 I guess but calling it a waste of paper when it actually serves a purpose of guiding and giving you a bit of a tease thrill, I saw some really good manuals with game maps in it, pretty cool stuff, still a game box with a code in it to download is shallow as it gets
I went ahead and swapped over this gen. I don't have any regrets, it actually became depressing for me to buy and open a physical game for all the reasons you mentioned. It's just brittle plastic with nothing inside but a disc with incomplete data that mostly acts as a key. That's so far from opening my fresh Genesis cartridge in the mall food court as a kid and pouring over the manual. Sad.

In almost all other media I have gone digital except for gaming. Game files are HUGE! MW3 is 108 GB, and that’s just the game, that doesn’t include any added maps. The PS5 only has 1 sad TB that’s not even enough to store 10 games. That’s ridiculous, how many HD are you going to need?

You don’t own your digital games, but you fully own your physical copies. That’s why I never want to change to digital.

It’s just refreshing to know that if my game was to be pulped out of the digital library, I’ll still have it, able to resell it or find it again from other sellers with ease.
They can’t take away my physical, that’s why companies are pushing digital to its limits. Why do you think the PS5 looks better without the disk?
Apparently, for a lot of games, sales numbers for physical are still higher than for digital downloads. Vote with your wallet. And if you do choose to buy a digital download, at least put it off for as long as you can. Buying day 1 in this day and age is a gamble anyway; give it some time and see if it appears to be any good.
How do you guys download AAA games? They're like 100GB each. That's more than my monthly cap.
Canada has cheap, fast, unlimited download internet. Everything else here sucks though

@@tappy8741 Also Canada: we've never had a no-landline option, unless you want to go with a satellite internet provider. But I can't imagine anyone doing that unless they're so rural that landline based internet isn't available (or they want to have Starlink to be trendy).
From the the PS3 and XB360 era, you could already see the move to digital reliance, from a console standpoint. PC gamers have already been living in the digital download world for as long as services as Steam have been around. I've been going all digital for over a decade when I opted to stick with PC gaming (but since back into consoles with the Switch and PS5). Not so much for the convenience, but because (from a PC gamer standpoint) when you'd get the physical copy, you're still asked to download the game and patches, and be signed into the storefront. At least on the PC side of things, there are sites such as GOG that allow you to purchase and download DRM-free versions of the games, so you can hold onto them forever, but I've yet to try them out.
Yeah that’s fair, I have a feeling once consoles start switching to all digital I’ll make the jump to PC (or at least get a Steam Deck)

Digital is trash and so are lazy devs that put 1/10th of the game in a disc and expect people to download 50gb of the actual game. I hate this industry so much it's unreal.

Here's the thing about corporations.....money talks. People say they want complete physical editions. Yet they are fine giving money for digital. Pick a side a support it. 8 know it's not always convenient, but my money goes where I want. Does it mean missing out on a game? Yup.
It doesn't help the cause to say you don't want digital, yet but digital anyway.

Personally I think that going all digital for consoles will hurt them more than help. ESPECIALLY in the US. Too many people still don't have reliable internet access to make this work, and with data caps and games being poorly optimized, not everyone can handle these 110 GB full game downloads and "patches" that games on xbox and ps5 are getting. Imagine a scenario where player counts drop because it's the end of the month and people can't download the patches or will go over their data limits. Well imagine no more, this happens to me every month right now as we have a 1.5 TB data cap.
This also puts a ton of power in the hands of internet companies, to the extent that even a regional outage can cost these game companies huge amounts of money. I honestly don't see a company like Nintendo giving internet providers that much power over their product, not to mention all of the incidental advertising that games and game companies get being on store shelves. Also, game consoles have almost no profit margin, particularly for retailers. Retailers make limited margins on games, which is why they sell the consoles too. So retailers have no incentive to sell consoles. Just as with internet, not everyone can get reliable physical delivery via mail, so many, many people in more rural areas will just decline to purchase these consoles if they are only available online or in limited supply at retail. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft would be leaving ASTRONOMICAL amounts of money on the table.
If they do go all digital, I expect for them to walk it back at least a bit. I also expect to purchase far, far fewer games in a digital only landscape.
I get what you’re saying. I don’t want to go all digital, it’s just becoming more difficult to buy physical because the corporations don’t want you to.
Even at the GameStop close to me, the staff is super nice but I don’t want to be hounded to buy an extended warranty every time I get a new game. I love physical but digital is so much easier (until they take away your things)
i hope one day we can sell acess keys or something to games when we dont play them anymore. at least then i feel like i own something

You may be able to sell access keys, but you probably won't be able to use them. But maybe you'd feel morally justified on the high seas.
I agree with your prediction of where gaming is going but I disagree with the conclusion that nothing can be done. Personally most of my purchases will be games from previous generations and I'm going to stick to older games that have a good reputation that I never tried when they first came out.

I hope indie game developers, AA game studios, and independent retail stores (such as PlayAsia, EastAsiaSoft, and Book-Off) saves physical media of video games because indie game developers, AA game studios, and independent retail stores cares about you and listen to you.

Really enjoyed your video. I decided to switch to digital at the beginning of this year. Especially on the Switch. I did sell my games and re buy them but based on cost analysis it made sense and most of the games I rebought.
What made me switch was how everything on the PS5 is downloaded anyway. Plus with my consumer buying habits, I always saw games as a sunk cost. Even if you resell them, you don't get your full value back. This is me looking back at my buying habits over the past 20 years. I usually never resold my games.
Plus with the Switch, the cost of storage has gone down for a 1TB card. When the 1TB card was $300-$400 when it first came out, it was out of reach now that it is cheaper (I got mine on Prime Black Friday 2020 sale for $135 but you can get it cheaper than that today. SD now makes a 1.5TB micro SD card. So crazy), it helped me make the decision on the switch side of things.
For The Switch, I did keep some anime licensed games physically to add to my manga collection. Plus Mario 3D Allstars.
I do have a physical Game Cube, Wii, and Wii U collection as well as Nintendo DS. I plan on keeping those. If anything, planning on getting adapters to play them on modern HDMI.
I also live in a small space too so having physical stuff clutters my home really fast.
Exactly, all of your points are great. I love physical media because you never know when a company like Sony is just going to decide to take away your ownership of a digital purchase (just happened to a bunch of people), but digital is more convenient for sure. And since most physical games require a massive download anyways, the storage argument for physical is no longer relevant.
I think Nintendo cartridges will age better than disks, so for now Nintendo stuff is all physical for me. But yeah on PS5 there is almost no point of having physical copies
One other thing I forgot to mention on why I made the change was due to PSVR2. All the games are digital with some exceptions of some with a VR mode that happens to be part of a physical game. You sill have to download it though.
I don't mind digital releases, I prefer physical because of the collection wise but with that said if platforms go All Digital I say they still should have the cases for sale for the collecting wise . Because something about having at least a case on your shelf feels just nice and plus they need to bring back and put the little booklets and stuff in there as well

@@HolyGrailGaming yeah mostly collect switch games as well even got a couple of Steel books that was really nice with it. It seems mostly the ones that come out for switch the companies and Indie Developers a little bit more care is there a physical editions for the switch
To be completely honest, this whole situation is dependent on how you adapt and what interests you. I will say I'm quite fortunate not to really care or have a need to play Current Gen titles so I don't feel pigeon holed to conforming into today's standard of games.
I recently bought an evercade which is all physical carts of a bunch of titles I've never played before, and I still have a huge retro and current Gen library of games I still haven't played. So in the end for some including myself I've just decided to take a back seat and not buy games if they're not physical.
I hope it all works out in the end, and no one gets screwed over, but I'm also a realist, we've all been getting screwed for a long time and we just take it unfortunately.

i love physical and digital media equally i know the majority prefer physical media better than digital media because they want to own there games they say we don't actually own our games digital media i also wanna say that i don't prefer one over another i love only digital future i love embrace this change but the only change i don't like at all is when they take away our games for good i am totally against that i would not be ok with that at all i just wish that they will let us also keep our digital media forever actually own it by not taking it away from us

I don't like game pass and ps plus games because when you stop paying, you can't play those games anymore it's like an online game rental, which is cheap, but there were times when a person finds out that he doesn't own a single game.

All digital sucks for music, as well, at least in the way you don't have the physical copy, and like a game, after your 'subscription' is done, or even if the company just goes under, you have nothing. It is convenient, however, and that is probably the lure.
The patches on release day are endemic in software nowadays, usually there are penalties associated with release date/milestones, so the product is 'delivered' on time, of course, it is also unusable, but somehow that doesn't matter....
Yeah the patches on release are what really frustrates me. Gamers have slowly accepted that games will be broken on the release date and slowly fixed over time…
I love digital when i had a gaming pc. Steam sales/random other sales, gave me enough games and was able to purchase games on sale. Console sales are not on their level. And 1st tier games do not go on good sales. i prefer getting console games used on or sales from different retailers. The console makers have full control and i don't get to choose from who i i get to purchase my media.
Exactly. Steam sales are great but consoles rarely get sales like that, I save so much money buying used physical games (especially on Switch)

How would that make it unplayable. If it can be played offline it should still be able to be played. I think.
Digital Steam games you do own. At least you can back them up on a hard drive and play them on any pc. Also you can run a fix on them so they start up and run without internet in case that ever became necessary. Also can burn them on a blue ray disk and make them physical. When consoles go digial only the physical game values with go way up.
They aren’t in control the customers are. The customers forced Microsoft to change their model for Xbox one which is why I can buy a pre owned game for my Xbox one x for £5. If people refused to buy games that were digital only developers would revert back to making physical media again since digital only would become counterproductive since they would be losing money. It takes some sacrifices but if enough people were willing to do it problem solved. I refused to get Alan wake 2 on principle. But I’m just one person. If others did the same we wouldn’t have the problem you are talking about. It was the same with the Covid vaccine. In the UK they couldn’t make it mandatory because I put my foot down and so did other like minded individuals. My body my choice. Now what was once a threat became a bluff. I was able to stay in my industry despite not being vaccinated and I never got sick. Never got Covid, not even once.
I think the customers have some control, but if a company sees a potential to save tons of money long-term they will probably just say screw those customers that want physical games unfortunately. And yeah not to get too political, but we can definitely see the statistics showing that it was actually useless and in fact caused more harm than good at this point...

@@HolyGrailGaming i still think cartridges were a far superior form of physical games. They were stirdy and lasted long. Nowadays the closest we have are the game packs from Nintendo which they totally make a hastle to swap out especially if you're playing ob TV. I just think they were better off without that tiny cover that protects the little slot they go in.
@@wahtari2994 as a software and game developer, I must say: piracy is the only real way you'll get to preserve most games. Physical copies are but a partial portion of the game data and a licence, once the big guys decide it's over, then you won't be able to install or play from physical. I'm not supportive of pyracy, except for keeping games alive past their commercial life.

Honestly imma give up on modern gaming completely when physical media ceases to exist. I’ll just stick to the good old 360 and PS2.
The thing about PS2 is that the graphics look worse now compared to when we were kids. I can easily modify the graphics on PC emulator settings, whereas on PS2, you're basically stuck with blurry textures.
Both of those consoles are all time classics
i don't care what people say about this but if your reason of not getting a physical copy is because of fear of patch 1 stabilizing it and without digital not having that update patch, that is a badly optimized game to begin with, and its on the company for the faults it will give, digital is in all cases a bad thing because you literally need an internet connection, sometimes you just don't want that to be a requirement and having a product in your hand gives a specific value that is just more practical, digital is just for the lazy.
What is stopping people from making a cracked version of their own game (assuming your playing pc) and keeping that on a storage device? Is there any downsides to that?
I'm going all digital next generation aswell, Game is getting rid of the elite membership in summer, some stores built into the house of fraiser and sport's direct, don't take preorders or sell preowned games anymore , the elite membership is going back to the reward membership which is 1%.
I'm going to be getting more points back on the eshop than I ever did in Game. Their store is mostly empty since they did away with used games and trade-in's. Once all the console manufacturers are only selling digital consoles and games.
Retailers that used to sell games are going to liquidate all their stock and go out of business. How long can places like cex continue to sell the same battered games before people lose interest. There are more people collecting games than there was ever before, what happens if those people who have amounted large game collections don't want to sell their games to them and get ripped off in the process. What's going to happen is they will run out of stock.
If no more stock is coming in what are they going to do. Are they going to become a phone shop, competing for business against the Indians on every street corner.
Their business is not sustainable.
Most people don't care about retro anymore. They would rather download Emulators and roms off the Internet and play their games that way. It makes me laugh when I see all the game flippers on RUclips trading in their modern games to buy, battered retro games.
What they need to realise, is this old tat is not in demand. Retro games and consoles and comparable to VHS tapes and VCR's.

i agree i only buy physical wif the game is older or cheaper on amazon i dont care about collecting once i beat a game it will like sit on my sd card till i get the next console

Even cartridges quality dropped and their lifespan only last 30 years.

Totally understand your concern, but that day 1 patch thing does come from games published by Activision, EA and especially Ubisoft most of the time.
And even then it depends on which game it is, who requieres this to be playable or played in genereal.
I play most of my games offline without any updates, and they usually work out of the box, very rarely noticing any gamebreaking bugs or glitches.
But overall the most sad part I can agree with is, that the boxes often feel very barebones without a inside artwork, booklet or whatsoever.
I still like to go through my collection and look at each cover and backside, really makes me smile, when the good memories come back

Might as well go all in PC gaming at this point. Once consoles go all digital then there is no point in buying consoles anymore.

Depends on the system and what game it is... Xbox physical is pointless. Playstation is semi that way. More and more Nintendo is becoming that way. There are facebook groups and sites that hold info about certain physical release. i.e. games are playable without download or patches, or being complete on disc/cart.
Going all digital, consumers need consumer rights protection. However, with 80 year politicians in charge, these protection may be awhile to become real or at all...
For me, I will die on the physical media hill. If games are digital all round, I am going Steam/pc.

Can someone explain to me how software that’s downloaded (on a switch) can actually become obsolete? If I can play it now without an internet connection, I hate difference would it make?
It is incredibly unlikely that software downloaded on your switch would become obsolete. The issue comes into play if you no longer have that Switch (it breaks, corrupts, etc) and you decide to get a new Switch. This isn’t an issue right now, but if Nintendo decides to shuts down the Switch servers in 10 years then all of your “purchases” may not be downloadable. Again this sounds a bit far fetched, but we see real examples all the time (Sony actually just removed a bunch of shows people already purchased digitally, basically proving that you have no real ownership when buying digital). Hope that helps clarify things!

I like buying brand new games physically in case I want to sell it after beating or posing interest. I also like having a physical collection that contains the games that truly matter for me. But outside of that, I've gone completely digital for the following reasons:
1. Convenience. Don't have to go anywhere to buy a game. Don't have to wait or pay for shipping. Don't have to change out discs/cartridges (which I especially love for remote play and handheld gaming).
2. Takes up less space. The less I own, the less space I need to pay for and as such, I spend less of my life working to pay for it.
3. I am often away from home, sometimes for weeks at a time. Digital gaming makes it so I have access to all of my games no matter where I go.
4. I am in a long distance relationship, and having a digital library of games makes it so my girlfriend can play any of my games on her own systems whenever she wants.
Don't agree with this defeatist attitude. If enough people just say no to buying digital copies then the games companies will be quick to change their ways!

Haha this is a good point. It's always the first thing to go. But Digital is also only good until they delete your already purchased content from your hard drive.

@@HolyGrailGaming I still have all my retro stuff. But I put off buying a console for so long this gen that I realized... I dont need one. Bought a used 2080 TI instead. Digital console games have their own problems. Digital PC games can be used on any PC that can run them. Near infinite backwards compatibility. Not locked to a certain box generation. Plus you can use controllers now, lol. I hate WASD! lol. I think steam also said that if the store goes down for good they will make all the games drm free.

- Obviously. They control the entire marketplace you buy games from (Excluding PC). Meaning that in an all digital world you'll hardly ever see a discount. Take R&C: A Rift Apart for example. Great game. I bought it not even 2 months after release for 30€. 4 years later it's still 39,99€ digital at it's lowest price.
I'll never ever in my life go all digital in the console world simply because they don't give us more than just 1 option to buy games from. The day we all do that we are royally fucked and lock ourselves from buying games at cheaper prices.

As doom and gloom as this is. There will be pushback one day. We live in america and if somone can make money from a whole in the market then they will capitolize on it. Once people get sick of not owning stuff they will want to and some company will make it big comming out with a physical only console

Xbox tired that before all digital console didn't work out they ain't going to stop making disc console because alot peple can't do that i ain't got xbox i aint got worry about it got ps4 still won't work

I'm currently a pc only gamer, but my ps2, 3, and 4 libraries are all physical and I still OWN them and they function. on pc, if the game isn't a live service, i end up OWNING that game one way or another. and i actually don't find any convenience in digital games on console. yeah, Day 1 patches are dog water, but those digital downloads also require the patches.
How do you own the games on pc?
