Physical Vs Digital Media - Why Digital Media Is Better In Gaming

  • Sony, Microsoft, and dozens of development studios, dozens of gaming publishers want YOU to go repurchase as many games as possible on the next generation hardware and will deliberately go out of their way to set the price as high as possible. Sony being the worst culprit of this now standard industry practice, forces their audience to spend more money to own "updated" versions of games they already own. They even gave them a fancy name, "Remasters". How many "Remasters" did you purchase last generation. How many "Remasters" are you interested in this generation because it's likely that they're here to stay. However, there's only so many times a company like Sony can re-release old games before their fanbase starts catching onto the schtick.
    How about those "Complete" editions, those "Game of the Year" editions, those "Legendary" editions, or how about those fancy, "Collectors" editions that come with the fancy add on materials, many with fancy hand-crafted statues. How much money have you blown on "Complete" editions, "Game of the Year" editions, "Legendary" editions, "Insert Adjective Here" editions that highlight the player being forced to download patch updates ad nauseum even when they think they've gotten the most complete version of a particular title.
    Of course, there's the "that" argument. Well I can resell physical games, you can't do that with digital. That may be true. However, most merchants/retail giants like Walmart or Gamestop will NOT pay you an exorbitant price by trading in the game you likely spent $60-$70 on up because they still have to make a profit in the exchange too and becoming a third party used games seller on Ebay or Amazon is not a better solution. With digital media, I can try a game out for two hours and if I don't like it, I can get a refund on the purchase. With digital media, my games stay updated all the time. With digital media, I don't have to rebuy games on the same launcher. If I buy a game once on Steam then it's forever in my library. With digital games, specifically on PC, I get access to sizable price cuts on new games, numerous consumer friendly sales throughout the entire year, and multiple storefronts to buy the games from which gives me greater choice as a consumer versus the limiting and often consumer hostile storefronts with Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store that you find on consoles. By purchasing games digitally, I will never have to worry about losing old titles that have been forgotten with time. ALL older games are within reach, easily accessible at any given time I want to experience them unlike on console where the question of what games carry over from one generation to the next is always up for debate and usually something is left behind.
    There's so many arguments to be had about physical media versus digital media but regardless of what entertainment medium the conversation is referring to, it's clear that with streaming platforms alone such as Hulu, Netflix, Paramount+, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and more, Digital has taken over the entertainment landscape for the better objectively. Videogames are simply the biggest argument against physical media considering their exorbitant asking prices, a complete lack of supplemental content which is usually found for free on the internet on sites such as RUclips, and failure to give players/consumers any reason to prefer the physical version of a game over the digital version aside from some fancy case that's ultimately worthless.

    I prefer physical copies. That's all really. The only time I'd buy a game digitally is if i can't find it in stores. A 'lack of space' doesn't really bother me. Its the samething with manga, why would it buy digitally if i can have it physically? Also bro why were you throwing the cases like that? Lowkey stressing me out lol.

    • @AvidAlchemist
      @AvidAlchemist  2 года назад +1

      @Kendrick Baldwin TV It's just a question of what's more convenient and consistent. I used to prefer physical but after being on PC for a while and rebuilding my library which I can access any game within a matter of seconds on a trackpad, it's just easier. Space is a big one for me especially after having a few storage containers full of games from older generations. Manga is different although it depends on the length of the particular series you're talking about. The only manga that I own are the ones from the Naruto series and I stopped buying those when the series quality took a nosedive in Shippuden's second half.
      My bad, I didn't know tossing the cases would bother folks.

    - can't resale or pawn or trade digital
    -digital needs storage which cost money, leads to needing to spend more money overall.
    -digital games costing the same as physical is a rip-off
    - with any stored media, glitches weird stuff can happen things can be erased .
    -digital it's not 100% that those games will be available /access for your entire lifetime
    -physical = asset , digital games =zero asset.
    - games get old ,you beat them. Can't do anything with a digital game after your done with it.
    -cant get digital games used (cheaper) digital means your ALWAYS only going to get a game depending on what a company what's to charge , as apposed to a garage sale or ebay and so on..

      @Him God
      1. Don't need to resell, pawn, or trade digital. Digital can be refunded or better yet, know what you're actually buying before you make an investment
      2. Digital games are typically far cheaper than physical with prerelease and postrelease sales so no, they're not the same price as physical. And your argument is ignorant regardless. The same game on digital should cost the same as its physical counterpart regarding the base price.
      3. That's a dumb argument. Glitches can happen with either the physical or digital version. That's why patches exist to fix those issues. Patches don't require a disk either.
      4. The vast majority of videogames are not getting pulled from their storefronts, again a mindless argument. Also, most gamers are casuals who don't finish the games they purchase in the first place. Most aren't concerned about whether or not something is 100% available in 10 years.
      5. Ignorance, complete nonsense. Physical games get old. You beat them. The disk gets grime and scratches on it. Now it doesn't work. Digital doesn't have this problem. You can do something with a digital game after you beat it, you continue playing it. I can tell you didn't think before you typed whatever this is.
      6. Again ignorance, complete nonsense. You don't need to get digital games used. That's what sales are for. You defeated your own argument. If you don't like what a publisher is selling their game for then wait for a big sale like the Spring Sale or Holiday Sale. There's no excuse or point to be made about simply waiting for a larger sale.
      7. Come back when you have an actual point to make.

      @@AvidAlchemist neither of those options really prove the point though? The reality is when you purchase a physical copy of a game, you can do whatever you want with it. I was only using the $100 as an example because he mentioned GameStop but we have to consider that GameStop is not the only place to sell games, that said, I understand that steam specifically has a really good return policy, but that is only under certain conditions. If you bought a game five years ago and played it to completion and then wanted to get some of that money back you are if physical media is not for you, I understand that. I completely agree with the convenience, the forward compatibility, especially on PC, obviously,and most of all the lack of clutter and junk sitting on a shelf, for example. But on the flipside.

    • @HouseWulf

      @@AvidAlchemist the flexibility of being able to sell the game shortly after you played it and beat it or whatever or even selling the game years down the line sure for not the full value or close to it, but still getting some of that money back it is still a benefit. Being able toloan the game to somebody or trade it in for other physical copies of games, I don’t think it has to do with finances either it really just has to do with preference and how people prefer to manage their library.

    • @AvidAlchemist
      @AvidAlchemist  5 месяцев назад

      @HouseWulf Yes it does because your argument has to do with cost. To subvert high costs, you either refund the game in full for a digital copy, you rent, or you purchase a subscription. Why would you refund a game that's 5 years old? Who would be dumb enough to purchase a game for 100 that's over half a decade old? The argument is silly.

    • @HouseWulf
      @HouseWulf 5 месяцев назад

      @@AvidAlchemist My perspective is actually about ownership, not cost. Steam will only refund you a game within 14 days and has been played for less than 2 hours. Renting a game is an option to subvert cost but does not grant the ownership and, depending on the game, could cost more in the long run if it is a game that needs to be rented multiple times to be able to complete. Subscription is the same concept as renting just typically with less choices of games or a higher value proposition depending how you look at it. The entire concept of digital gaming removes the most important aspect of a transaction: currency in trade for tangible goods. Again, most people don’t care and are willing to trade that tangible good for convenience… but for a lot of other people, the cost of ownership is invaluable. If you can’t sell it, you don’t own it. Until there is a way to sell and market used digital “goods”, physical media (in this case) will always offer the superior value proposition for the end consumer.

    To gamestop just to be harassed by a gamestop employee over buying a game and digital games sure is more cheaper than physical games though which I always
    Find it funny on how there are people that ride on physical media complain that digital games are expensive but yet do they not realized that physical games themselves.
    Can be way more expensive than the digital games? since they can get so rare and old which makes them even way more expensive than those digital games though
    Since people can sell them at such a very high price which makes them way more expensive than digital games which it makes me laugh seeing how delusional they can be.

    Can have their own flaws but at least digital media can be very convenient though.

Im PC master race much as the next guy but at least I can admit its shortcomings. I mainly game on PC but I'd never scrap or sell off my collections. @MarginalizedMilk No, I own a bunch of incomplete games on a bunch of physical discs that need to be updated with some kind of patch in order to be playable up to the game's latest version. And that's incorrect. Buying videogames digitally especially on PC is actually cheaper if you go to the correct site. Fanatical is the one I use. They offer discounts on brand new games that just released to market long before and after they release. But you likely knew that already.
      The abandonware argument is moot considering it only happens in extreme cases when a game has become a commercial failure and the publisher chooses to cut their losses and remove the game from all marketplaces because they're simply not going to profit from them. Games like Jump Force, Marvel's Avengers, and Babylon's Fall fit that description. Everything else you can still find online for legal purchase if it's been released for legal purchase. Some games lose some functionality for specific modes which are always multiplayer related but that's to be expected eventually. That doesn't fit your argument of abandonware.
      There's nothing tone deaf about it. Videogames sell in mass numbers more on digital than they do physically and it's been that way for years. It will continue to be that way. Convenience is a powerful thing and the majority of gamers will only play a game once and never come back to it again.

By the beginning of 2020 I immediately switched, without any hesitancy, to digital and I totally don't regret it. Not only digital games are cheaper due to the constant sales but also the variety and the abundancy of video games is way bigger than sticking to physical media, especially when playing on PC. The only downside of having digital games is that you can't sell them after finishing them, and it's really really hard to refund them especially on Sony due to their policy on refunding, but it doesn't matter really, digital is the way to go for me.

    I think you console gamers are going to regret going digital-only. Those of us who primarily game on a PC saw the introduction of always-online DRM to go along with the introduction of digital-only PC games. We now own nothing and they want us to be happy with that. And there is a move to make everything play by subscription, to where we will constantly have to pay a monthly fee to play our games and ownership is an illusion. Lots of space saved.... in our wallets.

    • @AvidAlchemist
      @AvidAlchemist  10 месяцев назад +2

      @noblelies I switched to PC 3 years ago. Not once have I used a subscription service like gamepass which is an optional service. No one owns these games whether you buy them on an incomplete blu ray disc that now always requires a patch day one just to be viable for some stability, or you purchase a game digitally which is easier and more convienient. You own nothing either way. Physical has gotten so bad that you now have to buy many of these games twice just to get all the patches on the disc itself and even then, you STILL need the internet for minor updates. They package them with fancy terms like "GOTY Edition" or "Complete Edition" or "Director's Cut". That shit is for the birds. Digital is better than physical, period.
      If and unless your doomsday scenario takes place and all gaming publishers move to a subscription-based only model industry wide on top of raising prices to ridiculous levels, then you have an argument worth listening to. Until then, you're complaining about a nightmare scenario that hasn't and likely won't take place. That hasnt even happened with the film or TV industries and streaming has been around for years.

You don't have to rebuy any of them since the PS5 is backwards compatible with them and in most cases, you can get a free PS5 upgrade if you have the PS4 disk. I wouldn't consider that a waste of money. In fact it's rewarding to know that the money you invested in your PS4 library can have improved graphics and frame rates without having to get the PS5 disk. Of course not all the PS5 upgrades are free, like Ghost of Tsushima, but the vast majority are. So if Bethesda made an Xbox one version of a game and then released a Series X version you can buy it only if you skipped it in the last generation, that way you don't own two copies of the same game and save some money.

      @@AvidAlchemist I do agree with you though. Nintendo is probably the worst offender of this.

      @NexusNine Yes that has everything to do with physical media which is why Sony has an egregious hard on for pointless remasters of older games in which they charge nearly full price for products that are years old. That's called gouging. What you're talking about are temporary exclusivity deals. That has nothing to do with the argument of physical vs digital media.

      @NexusNine Yes, It has everything to do with physical media. Whether a company makes it available or not has nothing to do with the argument of digital vs physical or vice versa. Plenty of companies have made older games "available" and I'm referring specifically to older games because every modern game has a digital copy that's "available" which further kills whatever point you're attempting to make. That has shit to do with the conversation.
      Once again, what you're talking about has to do with exclusivity. The only time I can recall Sony doing anything of what you're describing is with the Jak and Daxter series where they made the games only digitally available on PS4 never releasing a physical PS4 copy which didn't matter considering those games were old as hell at the time of their PS4 release along with the fact that the pricing was generous and we live in the digital age anyway where most videogames are sold through digital formats by fact.
      Other smaller indie games such as Sifu, Kena Bridge of Spirits, Mortal Shell, among others typically get a physical copy not that they need one considering most of their sales are digital regardless which leads me to your other comment you posted here.

    The beginning of the video is basically the one main reason why digital is better than physical because basically you're holding nothing but a bunch of plastic cases with CDs in them that may become non-operable one day and a lot of people are misinformed but physical games can have the license revoked to just like digital games but yeah this is one main reason why digital is better because you don't have to be a hoarder and have all that crap in your house
