  • How do we come to saving faith? Does God alone change the heart of the sinner, or does this change of heart also rely on the sinner’s will? In this message, R.C. Sproul helps us address this crucial question using two theological terms: monergism and synergism.

He has given us hope in hopelessness
He has forgiven us of our sins
He has placed joy and peace in our heart
He has broken the chains that held us in sin
He has freed us from the grave
He has removed the sting of death
    We are called BELOVED
And so so so much more
    Give Him thanks

People complain about reformed theology and Calvinism only because they can’t see what’s right in front of them. The un understandable is understood when your eyes are opened and you marvel about how you missed what was so obvious. It’s hidden in plain sight. Me witnessing to literally a few thousand people and the few positive responses I got made absolutely no sense until RC pointed I was talking to spiritually dead people. You can’t scare them into the kingdom by preaching hell to them. You can’t lure them into the kingdom by promising them eternal life or streets of gold. You can’t love them in, you can’t pray them in or threaten them. I can roll the stone away and preach to the dead in the tomb until I can preach no more and nothing is going to give life to the dead unless God does it. Oh, so the really are dead in trespasses and sin and they really are hostile to God and there really are none who seek God. Now it makes sense

Sovereignty of God and the Responsibility of Man is a mystery to our finite brain, just as the teaching of the Trinity.
We believe both side of the coin, just because they are clear teachings in the Bible. By faith, we understand how the world was formed.
Election of God is God's business.
Our responsibility is only to believe when the gospel is preached to us.
Stop all the arguments and focus on preaching the gospel.
Trust in the salvation work of the cross and be saved.

I’m still stuck at the end. Clearly those God foreknew is a subset of humanity. My question is, what specifically did he foreknow about them? Of course God being omniscient knows everything about everyone but I mean in this context. Isn’t it the Arminian view that God knew in advance who would accept his call and hence called them? I’m not sure that view is fully consistent with Original Sin, but I’m wondering what Calvinists understand by foreknew here.

    • @newroman116

God knew before the foundation of the earth who would accept the gospel of the cross. And those who chose Jesus, were given everlasting life. Calvinists have a different view and says that God has already predestined a certain group to be born again, without the group believing upfront. This is called "unconditional Election." You do not get to choose, God does. imho this view is flawed. To says God picks some, and rejects all others to hell, irrespective of what these people accept/ or reject, mischaracterizes the nature of Father God. Forgive us Lord.

If God foreknew who would believe then salvation is not by grace. If God saw anything desirable from us and then chose us then it is dependent upon us.
God chose to love some and not others and decreed through secondary causes that we would believe in Christ. To say God looked through time to see who would believe is to say that God is not sovereign over time and that He learns and reacts not works all things according to the council of His own will.

We hear His word, we accept it through faith, and he then justifies us freely by the finished work of the cross. It is really that simple. No one can save himself. God saves those who respond to the message of the gospel. Romans 10:9-10 lays this out.

Since you supposedly know good and evil since Adam and Eve ate of the tree of good and evil you know the answer whether you have to do something to participate in your salvation or not. What comes after that? You continue to know good and evil so you can continue to the good since you know it. After that? There is no after that except things happen when you obey the good.

Neo Calvinists are synergists, they believe God only regenerates through man preaching the word. The Bible has many examples of regeneration without the preached word, even the WCF chapter 10 confirms immediate Holy Spirit Regeneration. Cornelius was regenerated before Peter preached the Gospel to him, compare Romans 3 to Cornelius' conduct in Acts 10.

Also, grammatically the Noun "faith" is in greek a feminine Noun. The Pronoun "it" is neuter, and you cannot compare a feminine with a neuter grammatically speaking. Therefore the antecedent is not "faith." It is salvation / "by grace you have been saved" this is what is referred to by grace you have been saved, IT, through faith.

God in His sovereignty gave man a free will. John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that ALL that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
God does not give faith. He gives eternal life to them that believe of their own free will. Romans 6:23 For the penalty for sin, is death, BUT, the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 4:5. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him who justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Romans 4:6. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord imputeth righteousness APART FROM WORKS.
So faith is not a work, and Faith is not the GIFT. The GIFT is eternal life to them that believe on Jesus apart from any works.
Romans 3:26-28. For he is the just and the justifier of them that BELIEVE on Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? By the law of works? Nay, but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
Acts 16:31 Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Period.
First Timothy 2:4 God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come unto the knowledge of the truth.

  • @PotterSpurn1

So, let's get this clear: according to Calvinists, God chooses you before the foundation of the world, but you remain totally depraved and dead in your sins still, just like the condemned, and incapable of responding to the God (who is well still pleased with those he 'elected' according to the WC). Then, at the point of the effectual call, he regenerates his elect (bringing them alive to salvation)before handing them faith to believe (regeneration is before not after faith in Calvinism).
But, wait, he must hand them faith first and then regenerates them (to ensure Ephesians 2:8 makes sense because it claims that faith comes before regeneration. It reads….
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith (due to faith, which implies faith is what prompts grace and so comes before not after regeneration)-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God." (God hands you faith and regenerates you). This passage, through Calvinist lens, implies that God gave a dead person (TD'd) faith and then he regenerates them (to bring them alive). So faith comes before not after regeneration only it comes from God not from the person. So how can a dead person, still dead in their T&S, receive faith at all if they have not yet been regenerated and made alive to Christ? It makes a nonsense out of the whole concept of Total Depravity.
Their stated Ordo Salutis, regeneration before faith, only makes sense if God chose his elect before the foundations of the world and by his own hand, he made he them not totally depraved (regenerate) whilst keeping the rest in that state of TD, which may explain why God was well pleased) with what he had done and so they could go onto receive the faith God grants them later on at the effectual call. Yet that is not what Sproul says here. Why? Because it sounds too similar to Free Grace theology that dismisses the whole idea of Total Depravity as making man incapable of responding to God's call. The only difference being that Man gives his faith to God he isn't given it first, and God responds with the Holy Spirit and hope of salvation.
Can anyone, like me, see the obvious problem with his own explanation to make sense of Eph2:8 without resorting what he describes as semi-palagianism or to avoid it to dismiss Total Depravity as convincing? In order to dodge the Free Grace bullet, he has to put his own theology in the firing line - the most important part too for which the rest depends from the Doctrines of Grace.

“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Romans 8:13. The “you” in this verse are the born again Christians at Rome to whom Paul is writing. It is clearly synergistic: in order to live (that is, live eternally, participate in the divine nature) we must co-operate with the Spirit and put to death the deeds of the body (that is, sinful works). Yet even born-again Christian’s can live by the flesh, which will lead to spiritual death.

      It is written...
He has put ALL my sins behind His back, never to be remembered again.
He has thrown ALL my sins into the lake of forgetfulness.
As far is the east is from west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
And on the Cross, Jesus declared "It is finished", it would be shameful if I thought I could add to His work. He paid it ALL.
I'm trusting in the finished work of Christ and will not trample underfoot the precious blood of Jesus.

@@RockingChairRebel One favorite subterfuge of false teachers is to take random verses out of context, string them together and get them to appear to say something they don’t actually say.
The reference to God casting “all my sins behind His back” comes from Isaiah 38 where King Hezekiah after being told he is soon to die, prays: “Ah, Lord, remember how faithfully and wholeheartedly I conducted myself in your presence, doing what was good in your sight!” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. After this, the LORD sends Isaiah to tell King Hezekiah that his prayer has been heard and his life will be extended 15 more years. In gratitude Hezekiah composes a hymn of thanksgiving that God had “cast behind his back all my sins!” Why did God do this? Because God remembered the good that Hezekiah had done! Out of consideration for Hezekiah’s good deeds and tears of repentance, God remits the punishment Hezekiah deserved.
Yes, God casts our sins into the “sea of forgetfulness (Micah 7:19)” after we have endured His wrath because of our sins (Micah 7:9). In other words, after God has purged and purified us of our sinfulness, He remembers our sins “no more.”
If I had a nickel for every time I explained what Jesus meant by “It is finished” …. In John 6:38 Jesus said: “I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me,” and in John 4:34 He said: “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work.” So when Jesus said “It is finished,” He was declaring He had done everything He was sent to do, had finished the work assigned to Him. Does this mean Jesus has done all that needs to be done for our salvation? Well, the Apostle Paul didn’t think so, for he wrote: “in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church (Colossians 1:24).” What could possibly be “lacking” in Christ’s atoning work on the cross? Answer: our participation! The elect are “predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son (Romans 8:29)” for we are “heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him (Roman 8:17).” Suffering with Christ, sharing His cross, are necessary components to our salvation!
Now I am not saying you are a false teacher but clearly you are not rightly dividing the word. The Bible is not a compilation of proof texts; read the whole of Scripture, read each verse in context, and steer clear of teachers offering cheep grace, do-nothing salvation, or name-it-and-claim-it nonsense. Don’t “stand” on the word: Live the Word! Peace, brother.

I wonder how Calvinist evangelize unbelievers, will they say God loves you and sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for you and if you believe Jesus Christ you will be saved? Later tell him he believed because he was born again before he believed.

What a sad tired reasoning. Lazarus was dead, he couldn't do anything, obviously this is an analogy to salvation. Of Jesus would have only told us why he raised Lazarus. Like so they would believe or something.
