The Degrees of Sin: Building a Christian Conscience with R.C. Sproul

  • In the Sermon on the Mount, did Jesus teach that having lust in the heart is as sinful as engaging in adultery and that harboring anger is as sinful as committing murder? Is every sin equally evil in the eyes of God, or will He judge some sins more severely than others? In this message, R.C. Sproul reminds us of the nature of God’s justice and the perfect way in which the Lord measures our sin against His holy law.

As David Pawson pointed out. There are 3 types of guilt affecting man: False guilt, exaggerated guilt and true guilt. Psychiatry and psychology can deal with with false guilt and exaggerated guilt, but only God can deal with our true guilt.

RC Sproul in his later years clearly thrived debating with contemporaries he respected, eg John MacArthur. As far as I know, he never engaged with David Pawson, such a pity. For example, it would have been riveting to listen to Sproul and Pawson debating the issue of guilt that you raise.

Jesus was basically saying that we should not trust in the law or our supposed adherence to it.
God's law is far greater than our understanding of it. God is judging our hearts compared to His own Holiness.
God will not only judge our actions but the sins within our hearts.
So then His point is that we should give up trying to produce our own righteousness by the law but should trust in His salvation by faith thru grace.
It was astonishing to hear that God would judge the heart itself.
The reality of this means that all humans are in desperate need of Salvation.

He who knew his Lord's will and prepared not himself shall be beaten with many stripes though he did nothing worthy of stripes, but he who knew not shall be beaten with few stripes though he did things worthy of stripes. Solomon said that there is a vanity, that there be a wicked to whom it happens like unto the righteous, and the righteous that it happens like unto the wicked, it is vanity and vexation of spirit. Truly, there are degrees of sins, therefore degrees of punishments, yet a liar will spent eternity in hell just like a mass murderer, no purgatory etc. We just have to pray to escape God's eternal wrath and judgement on sin and sinners. May God bless you for teaching sound doctrine Sir.

No matter where go to search for a church , that's not all that far from our zip code, that preaches about things at this level, we are very disappointed. So we spend out time watching listening to Pastors on RUclips. Thoughts from anyone else experiencing this same dilemma? thanks in advance and may God Bless:-)

God, by his wonderful appearances on the behalf of his people, went about to wrest their idols from them, they held them so much the faster,
and said one to another, "Be of good
courage; let us unanimously agree to keep up the reputation of our gods. Though Dagon fall before the ark, he shall be set up again in his place." One tradesman encourages
another to come into a confederacy for the keeping up of the noble craft of god-making. Thus men's convictions often exasperate their corruptions, and they are made worse both by the word and the works of God, which should make them better.

I'd have to find book, chapter and verse -- wherein it is written that if we put ourselves under the law, that is when we will be judged by the whole law - if guilty of one sin, then guilty of breaking all of the laws. As born-again Christians, we are under grace. Sure sounds like Galatians to me. The law was as a school teacher - to show us our sins. Now that part I know is Galatians.
I'll listen to this whole series- see if there's something more specific on this.

Christ - " Do you suppose those on whom the tower of Shiloam fell were worse sinners? No, but I tell you that unless you repent......."
Interpretation by Christians: there are no varying degrees of sin in God's eyes.
Christ (again) before Pilate: "He who has delivered Me to you has the GREATER sin".
Now I'll watch the video to see if RC comes close to my analysis of this whole issue.

Judgement day will be for one of two issues. Do u worship the beast, and how much good works did u do? If u worshipped the beast, u go to hell, then what happens, I dont know, dont care.

I was hoping you could answer this serious question. No question without God's grace just one sin leads to eternal damnation. I believe God's word is pretty clear that they are degrees of sin and even the serious sins God will forgive once He justifies us. So my question is and I want to use an example. A presumptuous sin such as a unbiblical divorce. That is, it is a planned willful disobedience against God. Divorces take some time to complete. Plenty of time to seek guidance to change your mind. Can a born again Christian willfully disobey God, a sin He hates with a passion. I have come to the conclusion unless this sin is repented quickly you were never born again.

I really like RC but not too sure about this and the degrees of heaven and hell. Through Christ I am saved - I would like to think that one day I am sitting at the table with Him and the disciples and those mighty men such as RC and all those who have preached the gospel in a mighty way - but if there were degrees in heaven then I won’t be at that table. The Bible also says there is no weeping or gnashing of teeth in heaven - surely if I am sitting at the lower table I will be sad in that my life for Him on this earth was never good enough to be at the higher table. The same with hell. I believe all of us that are saved will be happy knowing that we are with out Saviour - regardless that some were mightier than others. Probably I am wrong - but I simply believe that there is two ways - heaven or hell. And regardless - there are no degrees as this would bring about ‘feelings’ and unhappiness in heaven.

What we believe or wish is not the authority here. God's Word is the authority. And He clearly teaches there are rewards for obedience (for those who were saved by grace) in heaven and degrees of punishment for those in hell. Exactly what those rewards are and how, exactly, this all plays out, I don't know.

Consequently, with no room allowed for Scriptural contradiction, it may be said that The Holy Bible is the Book by Jehovah's witnesses. As Revelation 19:6 exclaims, "Hallelujah!"

No. No. I have to say NO to this one. The flaw in this argument is that while hell is a reward, eternal life is NOT a reward. Justice demands that I go to hell, but the grace of God spared me from justice by God taking my sin upon Himself. It is true that the unsaved people will be judged according to their works. However saved people will not be justified to enter heaven because of their works. If justice overules, all deserve death - eternal death. I am not looking for justice, I want mercy!! Romans 4:1-5 teaches that the only people who are righteous are those who believe in the One who justifies the ungodly. Our faith is counted for righteousness by God. NOT our works. There are NO degrees of righteousness. There is only 'sin' and 'not sin'. All believers have the same righteousness as far as God is concerned. Any 'righteousnes' apart from that is filthy rags according to the prophet Isaiah.
It is just as bad to hate as it is to murder. The temporal consequence might be different but the eternal is as horrible. God is a judge of a standard way above ours. Sin is sin. Plain and plain.
O Christian never pray for justice. Never ask for what you deserve.
O sinner, I promise you that you don't want justice - you need mercy. Don't think that some sin is any less - the price is as hefty. Yes the more the sin, the more the punishment but the punishment is as horrible. It will all be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Flee to grace and mercy in Jesus Christ. You will have fled from justice - for Christ took it upon Himself.

    Ezekiel 18:24 24
“But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.

All sins are deadly because they can all send you to hell if you're a spiritually dead unrepentant sinner who dies in their sin.

But what if I DID commit adultery? What do I do now? The guilt doesn’t leave even after asking forgiveness.

Your sins are forgiven in Jesus. He paid for that. Believe it and be free.
What you continue to feel is not guilt. Guilt is not an emotion; it is a fact. Your guilt was paid for.
What you feel is regret and shame.
You have a responsibility to make restitution for those that you have wronged. Your sin is against God only - but other people were effected.
You need to acknowledge your sin to them and make restitution in meaningful ways.
      To your wife
To the husband of a married woman
To any children effected (with discretion and wisdom)
Making restitution will help heal your heart of the regret and shame you have.
Regarding your guilt: it’s been paid for.

      @Mike Zielinski ....
Correct. I made assumptions based on what he didn’t say. My response, though not clear, was a general approach to the sin of adultery.I mention “the husband of a married woman” based on assumption. However, if one exists then he has a right to know and deal with the issue on his end.
Children do not need to know the details or even much of the situation, but they do need to understand why there exists friction and problems at home and that it was “my fault, I’m sorry, and I am working to make things right.“
I want to touch only on the example that you gave, “... TELL NO ONE...”
The result of that is two-fold:
The wife will be living in a false world. She thinks everything is ok and it isn’t.
She now has a husband that not only cheated on her, but lies to cover it up (for the good of the relationship) and that will not prosper. “Do not be deceived; your sin will find you out.” God hates adultery and lying. When the Lord uncovers that sin she will be blind-sided. He is better off going to her in humility and repentance. Then with biblical counseling they can attempt to fix that issue and the underlying causes of that issue.
The second issue is this: even though he felt shame and regret those are not lasting emotions; they will pass. When they do, and because there were no ramifications of his adultery nor was the underlying causes examined then it will be easier for him to cheat again. His heart will become hardened to the process.
The wife has a right to know. It will be incredibly painful for her and him, but they cannot heal properly unless they deal with properly.
At the least she has the right to divorce him for his infidelity. She cannot do that if he buries it.
Your’s is a recipe for disaster.

      You’re a fool
You define disaster in human terms.
God is not impressed with your definition.
You ignore the clear teachings of scripture and wisdom by your attempts to minimize “disaster”
You’re just sweeping it under the rug.
      Good luck with covering sin.

Apostate? Says the man that hides adultery by lying about it.
      I uphold God’s word. You don’t.
At worst I have sinned by calling you a fool. You gotta give me time to repent.
I believe Jesus used that word against others in his day. Likely for the same reason I used it towards you.
I’m going to wait and see what the Lord says about my use of the term.

Thats not what Jesus meant at all, He meant that once the idea of Adultery lands in your head (temptation) and you dont shoo it away, but rather begin then to Dwell on it, you then have committed it to heart, meaning that if given the opportunity you would have committed it in concrete, not just the abstract. Sin is not Consequentialism, its spirtual, its problem does not lay in the committing in a concrete sense.
We know consequentialism as a Moral system fails continually.
If anything its worse to only dream about it and say "at least i have not done it" and be a hypocrite than to actually go and do it, at least the person doing it you can be seen as a individual.

Sin is Sin! There is no degree of sin. Once a person believes in Christ as their Savior, their sins are forgiven. Do they still Sin! Obviously they do. Sin is sin. Believers are not judged according to their sins. But at the Rapture, when we see Jesus face to face, and stand before Him, we will be rewarded for our service to Him on this earth. And we will receive our crown or crowns, if any, to lay at His feet.
