Dude that Active Worlds part hit me hard. I have no idea who AlphaBit Phalpha was but it's obvious they were deeply loved and respected by the community. It was heartwarming to see all of those user made memorials and love notes dedicated to them.

EQ1 was like this to a degree in the early days. Players would hold in-game memorial gatherings for guild members who had passed away or were retiring from the game. GMs would come into the game world to perform marriages between characters (with the tricks and cool stuff GMs could do, like temporarily flag everyone as beta-neutral so mobs wouldn't attack during the ceremony and enlarge people or give people levitation). EQ1 is still going too...
Made me want to join tbh, maybe they'd remember me too.
The craziest thing to me is that I met my ex of four years playing one of these games, and we played 3 of the games on this list together often. Really gives true perspective to time if you've lived through the life-cycles of games like these.

@@taoofjester4113 In lieu of a long, drawn-out explanation: Yes, sometimes, yes. Countless hours of gameplay, a terabyte or so of several years-worth of footage, and memories, of course, lead me down a rabbit hole of reminiscence quite frequently, and that is about the conclusion I've come to.
Granted, there's a lot more to it than that, and I don't know how much I would do differently if I could go back knowing what I know now. These games will likely forever be a part of who I am, for better or for worse.
returning to an old favorite is so alike to missing an ex ngl, it feels like there's no good reason for things to be over, like "this used to be so much fun why is it gone forever"

Those memorials in AW remind me of the tombstones you sometimes find in games with the name of a dev or a dev loved one that passed away during development. I found a few in my time. Probably the most beautiful and touching one I've ever seen was in Just Cause 3. Hyeng Woo Shim's "Beloved Son, Brother, Friend - See you in the next dimension". Surrounded by thousands of flowers, overlooking pristine water, and a view you wouldn't believe. Its incredibly moving.

I came back to this video because of the memorial in Active Worlds. That's so touching and heartbreaking.
I used to love H1Z1, it was genuinely a fun and refreshing game when it came out. It was a pioneer of the genre.
They also lied to people that it was going to be free to play or something. and they made it free ONLY when a gigantic competition came out. I recall it happening like that. im not sure what game prompted them to make it free, but until that point everyone hated how they lied about it.

I miss H1Z1 zombie mode so much I enjoyed it and played an absurd amount of it, and I am glad to hear about this H1Emu thing just blew my mind dude, thank you.
The segment on the ship triggered such deep memories for me, it looked so familiar then I remembered watching NerdCubed play it, so much has changed in my life since then and it was really nice to remember such a simpler time for me

Seeing Ship here reminds me of happier times. I loved this game. My friends and i picked it up randomly expecting nothing, yet we had so many great sessions playing it.

I dont know why but when you opened up the Islands of Nine lobby it was pretty disturbing being alone in that weirdly looking lobby and knowing that no one else is playing the game

A game you didn't cover was The Culling. Thought to be one of the first games to make battle royales popular. I absolutely loved that game even when the devs made horrible choices that ultimately lead to the death of the game.

Thanks for letting me know that H1Z1Emu is out there! I really liked H1Z1 Just Survive, had like 3 or 4k hours and after Daybreak announced EOS, I was very sad, and didn't have hope any other survival games at the time. Many friends and foes were made playing that game.
I stumbled on to your channel and glad I stayed to looked around at your videos. Active world brought back a lot of memories for me. I was in highschool when I first logged on and explored this. thanks for sharing this lost world with the internet again.

Islands of nyne was so good when i got it back in the day of testing, IMO this is what i think big streamers put a lot of negative talk on the game and as they have a big following every one just jumped on the band wagon so it went down hill, honestly i loved it and still have screen shots of the old leader boards.

H1Z1 was so fun back in its prime. I genuinely miss it sometimes

Regarding The Ship, there is a money penalty for random kills in the main gamemode. For example at 4:59 you go to negative cash. The money system is a fun balancing mechanic as weapons pay out more the less they're used, making weaker or less common weapons less useful than say a fire axe. There was also a spiritual successor, bloody good time.

and also i used to be an admin on Cloud gaming back in 2018, that server was quite fun back in the day, no idea how good it is these days tho

It's funny how ActiveWorlds is so old, yet looks and works better than Decentraland/Horizon Worlds
I started playing Gmod when it was just a mod for the source engine, I was 14.. I'm now 32. It just shows how long a game can survive if we allow modding. EA and other big triple A publishers should take note of stuff like Gmod. Some of my best gaming memories as a kid were playing the old school RP and The Tower servers on Gmod.
Then there's Battlefield 2, someone has revived that too. The mods for that game extended the life by like 10+ years.

1:39 that dude on the right looks absolutely terrifying. He should be an actor that plays a creep or a serial killer - even if he can't act, I dont think it matters, he could just say 1 or 2 words per scene - and it might make it even creepier.
I bought The Ship back in like 2011. I was super excited to play it because the whole murder mystery thing. Played it once for 5 minutes and never touched it again.

I remember The Ship: Murder Party! I used to watch a handful of old RUclipsrs play it. A shame it never took off despite that.
Also, Jesus Christ I started tearing up when I saw those memorials in Active Worlds. Those were real players who are now deceased. It's so haunting, yet so touching at the same time.
Edit: Ok, not all of those memorials were for players who died IRL, but my point remains.

I remember playing H1Z1 before battle royale was added, it felt like a different take on Rust legacy. I also played Fortnite before they added battle royale, it looks like "Save the World" is what remains of that.

H1Z1 is still gonna be of my biggest heartbreaks of my life, next to my first love break up.
Of course i'm talking about tome BEFORE King OF the Hill and Just Survive, when the game was as one.
The memories i've have with this game are surreal. Easily one of best survival games i've played. It wasn't groundbreaking gameplay wise, but sneaking around Pleasant Valley (where there were more shooting then in US schools) just to come out barely alive wiht few ammo, exploring the Hospital (still one of most climactic places in open world survival), or just cruising around trying to stay alive, all that just has special place in my heart. the game had very strong base, and if they did put money from King of the hill to survival, i'd say we would be talking about best Zombie survival yet.
And i'll never forgive them abandoning all this.
i played H1Z1 before BR, for me the game was killed by the BR/PvP since the developers completly abandoned the PvE side of the game
You know, as a VR user that enjoys a weekend on vrchat every once in a while, and having over a thousand hours in Garrys Mod, it really makes you think, the sandbox games we grew up on, just like IMVU, Activeworlds, and all that are all at some point, going to experience the same turn of events.
Friends we made in those communities, worlds we'd spend countless hours on, all will disappear. Growing up has made me note this already, having friends come and go, only for you to catch up and wonder where the time went as you each went your own route.
There will be a day we see our friends on VRchat and discord servers just, disappear, and holy fuck that hits hard.
Looking at The Ship: Murder Party, you can tell when AH did their videos in it with those spikes in the player base.

We still play the ship, we put together games in the community page every once in a while. This will always be the original and the BEST murder mystery game.
H1Z1 was so fun to play
H1Z1 in its prime 2015-2016 was the best shit ever. The post zombie apocalyptic world was such a vibe, together with the spooky music and silence when traveling through the world made it feel real. Just the right amount of arcady-ness with the right amount of realism for me.
The movement and gun mechanics were sick, I had never played a game with bullet travel time and bullet drop, I thought it was amazing.
The gun sounds also sounded so menacing from up close and at a distance. Listening to those old gun sounds is one of the things that make me really miss this game.
In contrast to what the game looked like after the combat update it's like it's not even the same game anymore. All good things must come to an end, but I just wish H1 lasted a bit longer.
The ship was one of my favorite games as a kid. Super fun even with bots.
Good video, really liked it. Maybe you could check out Eldevin. It's a dead MMORPG that used to have a lot of players but is completely dead now.

I always wanted to try Islands Nyne, but 'till I got the chance to, it died.

got into H1Z1 before it split... Was definitely better before that point. Me and two friends had a good amount of fun, but it definitely opened a can of problems when the rebranding happened :/

Give us more dead games! It's a bit haunting, especially that one with all the memorials. Some of the really early Battlefield games are dead. When I had a old PC years ago I hung there for a bit. I can't remember what server lot was handling that, but Gameranger is a server host for old games. People still playing Command and Conquer Generals there and all kinds of stuff.👍

I always liked the original The Ship. I had a number of memorable games of it back in the day. Too bad that the servers broke, the game was hard to get running, and the reboot flopped.
