Wow, I played Milo and the magpies before watching this, because I discovered the studio (Rusty Lake) long time ago and played every single game by it ever since. And oh boy, you've just touched the tip of an iceberg, hence Milo and the magpies is just a little game made specifically for kids. This studio made 3 full-length quest games as well as more than a dozen of smaller games (like Milo and the magpies), highly inspired by Twin Peaks, with crimes, blood, surrealism, and a huge plot that every single game is connected too.
Holy shit, I was just watching and thinking that Milo and the Magpies reminded me of a Rusty Lake game. Surprised it flew under the radar for so long! I’m a huge fan of the Cube Escape series, but had never heard of this one
"Milo and Magpies" sounds like an actual good game P. S. I went on Steam and bought it. Saw hundreds of reviews by people from this video. On one hand, I am glad the internet often works this way and helps people discover great things. I also imagine the game developer will not minds couple hundred extra bucks. On the other hand, just imagine how many great things remain hidden, unknown, never to be discovered. P. P. S. The game is also translated into 19 languages o_O
That's the paradox of the internet. Unique and incredible games that never otherwise would have had a platform can be shared so easily. Also, EVERYONE can share their "unique and incredible" game. So the great ones really are a needle in a giant stack of rotten hay.
Good news about Milo and the magpies, the game pretty much spiked in popularity thanks to this video. (I’m not kidding, if you look at it’s steam charts now you’ll see a MASSIVE spike in the player count a few days after this video released.) Now it’s sporting an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ rating from over 1,500 reviews. All thanks to Joeseppi, the dev even thanked him for bringing their game some much needed exposure.
@@chiptux909 That only applies to multiplayer games with lots of replay value. This is a single player game really focused more on the initial experience than getting multiple playthroughs, ergo getting players to hang around is not a high priority.
This video led to me playing Milo and the magpies! it's truly a beautiful game, and I ended up getting all the secret achievements. I entered into the raffle and ended up winning a commissioned portrait of my cat! All because of this video, thank you so much!
God, the line "guilt is a hungry mirror, trapped in a prison of clocks" is so meaningless yet the line is delivered with the gravitas of someone that's sure of themselves was so funny to me.
It's really sad to see games Like "Milo and the Magpies* to be made with loads of love and care and beautiful artwork/artists just to be left in the depths of steam to be forgotten and left to rot.
It happens quite often, mainly due to marketing. Too many game devs release their game without any or not good enough marketing. You gotta build an audience as you're developing or get a publisher if you can't get attention by yourself. I agree, Milo and the Magpies was well made, cute and relaxing. Hope it got some attention after this video
@@Readous I do think that today low budget social marketing can be done though, especially for a game as good as Milo. A short trailer video (budget $500 max, could even be free with minimal video editing skills by the artist) posted to the publisher's social media pages would be a start, and the developer would reach out to a number of video reviewers and even just a select group of general gamers with free copies of the game for review (budget perhaps $100-$200), to drum up interest in the niche market for such games. Of course, that's certainly easier said than done. I imagine many reviewers are swamped with offers to review games. Probably the biggest problem is simply taking the time to reach out to enough potential reviewers to find a few who are willing to do it. It would certainly make sense for an up and coming developer to have a game reviewed by an up and coming RUclips channel though.
Of all these games, I remember playing that game named Juicer like 9 years ago. To be honest looking back it felt like the game was first released earlier than 2012. But that's just me.
And many of these PC games that no one play are better than these cringe video game ads in mobile. I think you know what I mean and I'm pretty sure an ad pops every now and then while playing those type of mobile games.
@Future Pants I mean both have similar gameplay gimmicks but their pretty different imo. Just by both being different on perspectives makes them almost completely different Also the fact their both forgotten games that nobody cares about anymore
Technically "Searchnig for Fran" is the most realistic life sim. Aren't we all running from stranger to stranger, racing hobos, shooting balls and doing crazy shit like falling through the ground?
Ballad of the Masked Bandits was a game that was made by a group of seniors in the computer science program at the University of Utah. We had like 6 groups and I worked in another group that made a twisted metal knockoff called KillSteel. Pretty cool to see it get a little exposure.
Milo and the Magpies was genuinely such a beautiful and good game However it’s pretty sad that such a good game went unnoticed for so long but nonetheless it makes me happy I was able to experience it
Just realized the guys that made Milo And Magpies also made The White Door, a game I will always remember for how absolutely gutwrenching and emotional it was the further you got into it. Glad to see them still make games like this
I’m glad that Milo and the magpies is getting the recognition they deserve because some people do not UNDERSTAND how difficult it is to make a game. You have to: -Design good visuals -Think of brilliant puzzles -Bug test the game -Make sure that the controls are simple and intuitive -Get a good soundtrack -Be original -Have a good storyline or introduction
A-lot of these little indie games are actually small student projects that they quickly develop for a grade, and others are from those like myself that create small titles just for the learning properties of it and the fun.
Milo and the magpies looks like a fucking masterpiece who ever created that game definitely has my respect. I played it after this video and absolutely loved it! Hopefully this video gets that creator the support and love he definitely deserves.
Milo is the passion project of the background artist of the Rusty Lake studio Basically the artist wanted to make a game, and the studio used their resources to make it a reality and publish it under their sister brand Second Maze (they mostly use it to clear up the differentiation with their Rusty Lake series) It's that good because it's been made by a multi-million dollars indie company (according to my estimates) But nobody plays it because it's an artist's game that has no ties with their usual work published under a dead label that they only use to publish small creators' content, that they then promoted for a few days, and that's it
I'm kinda gonna shamelessly put this here - If someone is looking for a great city builder game, I know about one which mostly gone under the radar in the city builder community - It's called Cliff Empire. It got picked by quite a lot of big youtubers near it's EA release - like around two weeks after - due to the lack of features at the time ( there was not much to make more videos about so ) the game was mostly forgotten soon after. To explain the basic premise of the game - the main gameplay loop revolves around building, expanding and micro managing cities on three cliffs ( and later two more locations ), which forces you to utilize the space you are given most effectively - that's something you can do through researching new technologies, unlocking new buildings, planning effectively the layout of your city, etc. There are also mechanics such as trading, day and night cycle, quests / natural dissasters and more. The game looks - in my oppinion - amazing, the soundtrack is also pretty good, it's running fine most of the time and it has also been translated to quite a lot of languages, which is always a plus. All in all, I think it's a pretty good game for it's price and impressive considering it was basically made by one man. I would recomend checking it on steam or youtube to anyone who is atleast a bit interrested in city building games, perhaps you may find it interresting.
I'm so happy to see games like Milo and the Magpies get exposure they deserve. It's heartbreaking to see something so beautiful that had not had one player. I'm so happy that people know about it now and enjoy it. P.S. And For all of those games out there that were passionately crafted, and haven't been discovered yet, I just want to say I and many others appreciate what you do and I hope you too get some exposure and have people enjoy your game, and we would probably like to enjoy it ourselves!
Rusty Lake, a game team, has developed a few puzzle games, and for that reason, they recommended Milo and the magpies on their insta page. Having completed most of Rusty Lake's games, I was hyped to play it sometime.. which I would if this dipshit didn't spoil it.. 😂 Point is, even with Rusty Lake practically advertising it, I expected it to have at least some players..
And maybe if they made it multi player (1 player for 1 racoon).. or if they had only 2 racoons to control in single player, to make the game easier to manage
Fun fact Nightshift is using a horror asset pack, the menu/weapons/character controller/examine/inventory systems are all available on Unity for like $30. That's why the core systems look relatively professional, yet the game is short/unfinished.
Yep it is also on the unreal marketplace as well. I don't get why people just download a asset pack do nothing to it and then release it. Most people who even buy it will just refund it so they are just wasting their money.
@@MrMansurf I haven't checked if the game is free or not (Why would I want to go check out a Asset flip?) But I was mainly just talking about asset flips in general because not everyone puts them out for free. Some people buy asset packs as well and throw them together do nothing else to them and ship a unfinished game under the game preview/early access. (I am aware that the horror pack is free if that is what you are referring to).
OK let's see you do any better. Imo the games are worth they're price for the most part and it's not fair to citizens others for they're works of art that they CHOSE to share they're inner most artistic thoughts with us which is more intense and personal than even sex
It actually breaks my heart that nobody played Milo and the Magpies :( someone put all their artistic hard work into it and it’s just been neglected. I’ve been thinking of getting steam to play some other niche games that really peak my interest but I will play this game too. ❤️
I want to remind everyone that in order to put up a game on steam, you have to pay 100$, as a sort of anti-spam mesure. The creator of every game on the list payed that amount of money in order for their games to be able to be put up on the site. Edit: The worth of $100 is largely dependent from how its spent. A passion project, thats production costs largely outweigh the price of setting up the steam page? not that much in that case. But that is still a lot of money for what is basically an overgrown shitpost. (Wich many of the games on this list are)
The artsy puzzle game that was actually good is Dutch! They even incorporated funny names into the news paper, for example at 16:28 theres a guy with the last name "Kortelont" meaning 'hotheaded' or 'short tempered'. Truly incredible to see the amount of details!
so i was watching this part about Milo and the Magpies and was thinking ''that entire background reminds me of a dutch neighborhood'' and at 16:29 the newspaper name (ons wijkje) is translated from dutch to english into ''our small neighborhood'' i just wanted to point that out because i could recognize it as dutch just because of how good the artwork is. Like it even features the local guy growing his own weed every dutch town has at least 2 of those.
I just spend three hours going through video after video looking for good games. This is the first video I actually let play through and didn't skip to the titles to look into myself. I was entertained the whole way and the way you described each was absolutely fantastic. I laughed throughout and actually got several games and recommended the Milo one to my cat/artiest-loving friend. Thanks for an amazing video.
Milo and the Magpies really deserved to be played. Looks like something with so much love and it's sad to know there are probably a few hidden gems like that all over steam
Milo and the magpies legit looks like a game someone put efort in and deserves a chance. I feel bad that so many game devs put a lot of work in their games like this and get no recognition. Looks like a good game
Was not expecting “Elephant figures out how to nuke poachers” to be the plot of a game, but as someone whose favorite animal is an elephant I am totally down for it.
I was quite surprised to see Doodle Date on here. I remember when it was everywhere. I guess the novelty wears off quite quickly once you hit the fanfiction stage.
I kinda wish that Doodle Date was made into a game sorta like something out of Nintendo, where it would be purposefully wacky and odd for comedic effect, sadly it was a fanfic
Milo and the magpies reminded me of these swedish games based on children's storybooks that I used to absolutely love. The artstyle is beautiful and the puzzles are so clever. Will definitely check it out when I'm in the mood for a puzzle game
quitting Doodle Date when you did was the biggest mistake youll ever make. now youll never get to murder Claire, or marry your favorite fruit, or get Oedipus Rex'd by your doodle son.
The alternating between 3 characters, the climbing in a totem formation, basically the whole concept and gameplay, is all stolen from Zelda Triforce heroes sadly
the dogpet game is simply a 10/10 for me. im insane, mentally unstable, and nothing would make me happier than a game about petting low-quality models of dogs and cloning them. amazing. breathtaking.
After I saw this video, I got Milo and the Magpies for my grandmother. She really enjoys the puzzles and the peaceful scenery, and she plays it almost every night. Thanks for helping me find a good game for her!
He needs to change his review of dogpet from a 3/10 to a 3000/10. That low of a review score for such a magnificent bunch of 0s and 1s is a crime against humanity.
The movement mechanic in Broll feels like it’s one of those concepts where you’re surprised it hasn’t been thought of before. That looked like a lot of goofy fun.
Yeah but no, I recognized the stock Unreal engine 4 rag doll...and assets, apart from the castle that was obviously bought it really felt like one of those tutorials for movement you can find here on yt
Not sure if someone’s already mentioned this but the finding fran game is literally an Unreal Engine template map with random free assets added on top.
It's kinda sad seeing a list of unplayed games on steam. Imagine how long it takes for the developer to make that game, some have gone through hard times as well. Hoping that his game will be played by other people.
Milo and the Magpies is just so underrated in terms of quality. I just tried it yesterday and had a great time. I literally can't recommend it enough to anyone, If you have some spare balance in your steam account then I assure you this game is a must try. Only if you are into puzzles though.
I feel that "And I must scream" is a game where the charcter is trying to get through overwhelming grief, where everytime he succumbs to it, he has to pick himself up and start again, until a flicker of hope emerges, the lady with the light, and guides him to eventually come to terms with it, symbolised by him putting flowers on the grave. I think.
I've added Milo and the Magpies to my Steam wishlist. Seems like a really charming and sweet game that was actually made with passion and talent. Edit: I have the game now. Devilkenji 34156 was kind enough to gift it to me. Second edit: I beat the game on Christmas Day. It was brilliant.
@@wilczus222 I'd get it solely because it is a good one, without any players. I am not a fan of point and click or the artstyle, but I admit it looks pretty good
I'm surely not the first one to say it, but Milo and the magpies deserves way more attention than this. It's already so good with nobody playing it, imagine if a lot of people were playing it, supporting the creator and giving feedback, where this game could be right now!
"And I must scream" has a story to it. What I got was a young boy trying to get over the grief having lost a lost one, as proven by the voice line "I'll do anything to get her back". I guess the spider boss thing symbolises him trying to escape said feelings of grief and the blue old looking fella is him moving on. In the end when he puts the flowers on the grave stone, that's like proving he's moved on from her death. I do not know why the boss is a spider maybe her death had something to do with it?
oo the the title could be seen as a metaphor as he feels he can’t talk to anyone about his grief (the full quote being i have no mouth and i must scream, a short story)
Don't forget that no one, literally no one wants to make a bad game. These are all games that someone spent months, maybe even years of their lives on, trying to make a fun experience for others to enjoy. Sad to see how some of them are doomed to obscurity. Solar Sands has a video called "Doomed To Obscurity" which talks about this, and seeing this video reminded me of that.
This is wrong in so many ways. First: There are no "air molecules". Air is an mixture of different molecules but no separate air molecule does exist.... Second: If there was an "air molecule", this would never kill you but the virus transported by it...

I feel like finding fran has a deeper message. You search for fran all over the map. And when you do, what then? You realise how empty and blank the world is. No quests. Just the map. The empty map. But we never saw that before. And even if we did, it didn't seem so bad because we had a purpose. We were chasing and finding fran. We were finding meaning in a world without it. But in a world so bland, what quest is there really? And so we decide to search for fran. A mundane quest to look for a stranger. And yet, the search for fran made those few minutes fly by faster. The world didn't seem so empty then. It only did after we found fran. After we finished our quest. But who's to say finding fran is the end of the adventure? Why not search for someone else, or do another quest? Sure, we don't know if finding another npc with another name would work. We don't even know if they exists. But we weren't sure if fran was real until we found her. Finding fran shows that life is what you make it. Life is empty and meaninful, joyful and tragic all at once. It only depends on how you look at it. It's a matter of perspective. BUT THAT'S JUST A THEORY.
You see, the line 'guilt is a hungry mirror, trapped in a prison of clocks' is actually ingenious. The 'hungry mirror' represents the way that guilt will consume you, and the 'prison of clocks' talks about how it is trapped in time, never to go away. At least, that's the most generous analysis I can think of.
What if "hungry mirror" means distortion in mind created by greed and "trapped in a prison of clocks" because it is created by our inadequate perception of time
@@sandorrclegane2307 it appears to be a character named Ichirou Irabu from the anime Kuuchuu Buranko. (If this reply appears twice, my internet was struggling at the time when I posted it.)
29:00 amazingly, the sound of connecting atoms is ripped directly from triple A title Fable. It's the isolated sound of one person from a crowd that would applaud acts of heroism. So you know.
I could see Finding Fran ending up on a channel like Nick Crowley or MrBallen. “What would seem to be a just a broken, unfinished video game would turn out to be something much, much more sinister.” …like the dev murdered someone named Fran, and every face in-game is based upon real life people that were a part of his life in one way or another.
Even the setting would be based upon where the crime was committed, as closely as the dev could manage with their lack of experience. The game could have been created either in the form of an attempt at a catharsis, an act of guilt, a breadcrumb and gesture to be caught, a parading of the horrible deed, or all of the above.
25:51 "Guilt is a hungry mirror, trapped in a prison made of clocks" This means, guilt is self aware and all consuming, stuck within itself, constantly aware that time is ticking down.
Oh my gosh. The fact that you turned what looked like a horrifically bad game [in the first one about Fran] into a gut-busting experience ... new subscriber mate. Your British? humor is delicious.
Joeseppi, I must say this was wildly entertaining and greatly edited with all the jokes and memes. I loved that you feature both janky and well-crafted obscure games and I really hope you'd make this into a series. With the rate at which smaller indie games are released (on top of the entire existing pool) you basically have an infinite number of games to go through. This was a great watch from start to end and I'm happy to be a subscriber.
The game "And I must scream" is based of the short story "I have no mouth and I must scream" by Harlan Ellison, I think it was made into a graphic novel as well, its a cool story. This might explain the lack of story.
I met Linus at a restaurant once - we’d accidentally been given his table. Apparently he was fond of the restaurant and had a specific table he liked, and the management had messed up and gotten their days wrong, (it was Tuesday and they thought he was coming on Thursday or something like that). Anyway, the manager, completely embarrassed (this is a pretty nice restaurant) comes by and says “I’m so sorry, but we’d like to move you to another table if you could be troubled, and we’ll gladly compensate you for the cost of the meal and any other meal you’d like while you’re in town.” My sister and cousin were both like “Yeah that’s cool.” and I kind of played the asshole a bit. “I’m sorry, I just don’t understand. We’ve been here for 15 minutes - we’ve just ordered. Can’t we finish our meal here?” Then out of nowhere Linus shows up next to the manager and says “Paul, these guys can finish. We’ll be at the bar. I got some time.” And I (being a big LTT fan) said “Oh wow, uh… I had no idea. Please feel free to give them the table.” Linus was grateful, shook my hand and said thanks, then gave me a card with his number on it and told me to give him a call later. After working up the nerve, I gave him a call that night, and to make a long story short, we had a glorious 11 month love affair, man on man, that I shall never forget. Our bodies intertwined as one, and from the beauty of Frankfurt, to Shanghai, to the snorkeling in Boracay, Linus and I made glorious gay love to each other on six of the seven continents.
I was actually surprised that doodle date happened to show up in this video, I remember at LEAST one letsplayer playing it vividly . Maybe no one plays it now, but I definitely remember it being played at SOME point.
And MatPat played it on GTLive. So that makes 4 big RUclipsrs that played it. But I guess since it's a small one/two-time-playthrough type of game and it came out back in 2018, it makes sense why no one is playing it now.
"guilt is a hungry mirror trapped in a prison made of clocks" I'M ACTUALLY DYING THAT IS THE FUNNIEST FUKING SHIT I'VE EVER SEEN IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE CREEPY? IT'S HILARIOUS
Let me interpret a meaning here: Maybe what it's trying to say is that being guilty is like you seeing a mirror, or just be a mirror reflecting whatever choices it made, surrounded by quantum prison, prison made of clocks of course. What means is, it's that you want the clock or specifically time to end you once and for all, and the mirror part was you being an asshole
I think It means that guilt will eventually catch up with you. Guilt will inevitably make you reflect (hungry mirror) its always a matter of time (trapped in a prison made of clocks). At least that's what I got from it 🤷 Tbh tho I like hungry mirror as a descriptive device.
That whole game really feels like it was based on a dream that somebody had once. The line might also be from a dream, and may well have not been intended to make a lot of sense, or have any real significance other than to enphasize the bizarreness of the game world that isn't supposed to make sense either.. I know I've dreamt many things that made about as much sense as that after waking up.
What's really funny about the last 'horror' game is that it wasn't even made by the developer. It is just an asset already pre-built by unreal engine. It's like a demo that developers can look at with ideas to take inspiration from. The person that made this just put their own text on the starting letter, then copy and pasted the whole thing onto steam. All of the features like the item menu and viewing system was fully supplied by unreal engine. Thank god it is free. However some people actually sell this demo for real money. There was recently a case of this on the Xbox store. The banner art was of FNAF: Security Breach, (Which wasn't on the store at the time) and was called Fnafeno horror story. It was an exact copy of this but they couldn't be bothered to change the text on the letter. It was removed but people still upload this for around £3-£10 which is unbelievable. Just thought I should let people know in case they give credit to the developer for any lighting or mechanics.
"guilt is a hungry mirror, trapped in a prison made of clocks" guilt is the reflection and feeding on your actions, trapped within you, forcing you to look back on time. yes I am 16 and this is deep

@@Readous I found it on the play store so ima give it a go when I can
@@Readous I do think that today low budget social marketing can be done though, especially for a game as good as Milo.
@@MSUTri But they do have a trailer. It's on the RUclips and Twitter accounts for Second Maze.

-Think of brilliant puzzles
-Bug test the game
-Make sure that the controls are simple and intuitive
-Get a good soundtrack
-Be original
-Have a good storyline or introduction

Magpies*
Milo is the passion project of the background artist of the Rusty Lake studio
Basically the artist wanted to make a game, and the studio used their resources to make it a reality and publish it under their sister brand Second Maze
(they mostly use it to clear up the differentiation with their Rusty Lake series)
It's that good because it's been made by a multi-million dollars indie company (according to my estimates)
But nobody plays it because it's an artist's game that has no ties with their usual work published under a dead label that they only use to publish small creators' content, that they then promoted for a few days, and that's it

Seeing Milo and the Magpie makes me think, “how many other beautiful video games have gone under the radar simply because no one ever noticed them?”
@@milokojjones I just added it to my wishlist, thanks for the recommendation!

I remember watching someone play doodle date back in the day, it actually had a big fandom
I remember seeing jacksepticeye or dantdm play it then immediately stop after it got… nsfw.
“Doodle Date” Oh god the flashbacks. Seriously that game get so fucked up so quickly, specifically Clarie’s route.
Forgot that game existed
Mate, do tell what the fuck happend.

TELL ME YOU GUYS GOT MARRIED AH-
You had me in the first half tbh.
wait, so you did it in Europe, Asia, Oceania and what other continent?
Why did I read the whole thing

You literally made Milo and the magpies a successful game.

I was actually surprised that doodle date happened to show up in this video, I remember at LEAST one letsplayer playing it vividly . Maybe no one plays it now, but I definitely remember it being played at SOME point.
probably was game grumps
@@doe9000 Yeah it was, I didn't forget who I was just saying there was at least one that I saw at some point in the mid 2010s haha
Jazza and jacksepticye played it
And MatPat played it on GTLive. So that makes 4 big RUclipsrs that played it. But I guess since it's a small one/two-time-playthrough type of game and it came out back in 2018, it makes sense why no one is playing it now.
"I used a complex algorythm called picking the ones that look interesting". I respect that.
"guilt is a hungry mirror trapped in a prison made of clocks"
I'M ACTUALLY DYING THAT IS THE FUNNIEST FUKING SHIT I'VE EVER SEEN
IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE CREEPY?
IT'S HILARIOUS
this is like those. Tumblr posts that tried to be deep..
i am so confused💀
Let me interpret a meaning here:
Maybe what it's trying to say is that being guilty is like you seeing a mirror, or just be a mirror reflecting whatever choices it made, surrounded by quantum prison, prison made of clocks of course.
At least that's what I got from it 🤷
Tbh tho I like hungry mirror as a descriptive device.
I hope Milo and the Magpies got some extra sales from this video. I feel for the hard-working devs that had their games lost in the no-player zone.
Milo and the Magpies, in addition to looking like a good game, is also a fantastic name for an 80s New Wave-fusion band.
Love how most of these games are either shitposts, student projects, some guy trying to scam money, or hidden gems
Thanks to you, millions have knowledge of some gems that were stuck within some mediocre games (those gems being Milo and the magpies, and broll)
"guilt is a hungry mirror, trapped in a prison made of clocks"
guilt is the reflection and feeding on your actions, trapped within you, forcing you to look back on time.
