Primus' lyrics are pretty literal for the most part. This song is about Jerry, who was a racecar driver. Tommy The Cat is about Tommy, who is a cat. John The Fisherman is about John, who was a fisherman.
Song is a contrast between Jerry, a stupid party boy that only cared about having fun, and ends up crashing and dying at 22... and Captain Pierce, a fireman that worked hard, helping his community, his whole life and was forced to retire at 65. Claypool said Jerry was inspired by a guy he knew in school that was a jerk. The kind of guy who'd join the police to feel powerful and lord it over other people. He'd drive like a fool in parking lots, nearly hitting people at times, and didn't give a damn about anyone but himself.
Your reaction is exactly what first time listeners should have. Like confused, but feeling the funk, but weirded out by the voice, but can bop your head to it. Like you’re feeling it, without realizing you’re feeling it, and can’t quite understand if you like it or not. Like all those emotions come out in the first minute of the song. This band reminds me of tool and deftones. Not the sound, but the fan base. The fans of those 3 bands LOVE the music. Of course tool headlines, but primus and deftones aren’t always the headliner. I saw primus open for slayer, and deftones open for rise against. And there was a significant amount of people who left after both those bands finished (more so at the deftones/rose against). But I’m glad you enjoyed it.

The young kids who "think" they are racecar drivers, but on the street. Then one night he got behind the wheel drunk, and killed himself when he lost control tearin up the street. And capt pierce was the 1st on the scene of the accident.

The only other Primus song that I personally know at all is This American Life. I do know, though, that Primus always has really crazy bass guitar parts, because their lead singer, Les Claypool, is one of the best bass players in the world. The bass is often more prominent than the guitar.

You really need to listen to the song "TOMMY THE CAT" by Primus. I think it is their best funk metal performance. The bass line is absurdly good.
He may look weird, but you're looking at one of the most technically proficient bass players ever to pick up the instrument.

I love Primus. It is an enthusiast band so if you don't play bass or aren't really into technical aspects of music you might not get them.
