My opinions & thoughts on anything I feature in my videos are always my own.
Is this an area that your struggle in? Let me know if you have found a solution!! xox
Yes if I don't wash it every 2 to 3 days, right NIW I can't wash it because I have sutures on my face and I am terrified of the possibility that water might touch those since tap water has all kinds of garbage that will cause infections. Once I take out the sutures next week, water can touch them but I can't submerge them under water I believe.
So right now I have this messy tangled hair which is crying for a wash, and the face of the bride of Frankenstein (No offense to the plastic surgeon, they're actually the most beautiful sutures I've ever seen, its just that they're just that, sutures, people use makeup to create those for their Halloween costumes lol).
Melissa, I finally figured out after YEARS of these setbacks that I HAVE to detangle my hair after taking it down from a protective style BEFORE getting it wet to wash it. Maybe that is what is ailing so many other ladies, not understanding that, and you can make a video. Most of us grew up with relaxers and never gained a full understanding of our natural hair. It doesn’t react the same to water and those shed hairs that stay in a protective style until it’s taken down will loc if not removed before washing and that’s what’s causing the matting and tangling. I am SO glad I finally learned this, I have never had a braided style before and have only been to the salon a time or two since I went natural. So I simply didn’t know and looks like I’m not alone.. 😢💪🏽✨🙏🏽
My hair shed and matte years back when I washed it. My beautician noticed it once when I went to get my hair done and suggested I see my physician. I found out I was Vitamin d deficient. The shed hair made my hair matte together and it was scary. My hair now thrives when I consistently take Vitamin D supplements and shed when I don't.
Same thing for me but I was deficient in iron and b12.
Thank you Tanya!! I think your comment is the solution to the problem I am having (shedding and matting).🌷🌷
Literally where I'm at. Asked to have my vit d checked at least 3 different times since 2017 & doctors kept-ignoring my request...checked for the FIRST TIME ever last week. My vit d is 6.7 😐. Found out beginning of 2020 I was anemic too. Smh
Your immune system is Thanking you; most people affected negatively in an extreme way by the C 🦠 were Vitamin D deficient.
This is good to know... I know I'm deficit in vit d and iron but didn't know it may be affecting my hair
My hair gets so tangled every time I wash it, once when I did a protein treatment it was literally was undetanglable. Just popped snapped and cracked, a nightmare. Took three months of extreme moisture to get it back to normal. I thought I’d have to cut it off. My hair is almost to my butt now, I just finger detangle. I don’t know if it’s the best routine but I just do my hair once a month. I just hibernate for two days. It’s constant work for 24 hours but it’s always worth it. I can’t wait to get a silk press for my birthday!
I accidentally left conditioner in my hair and when I washed it I had to detangle it almost 4 times. Once before the wash. Second right after the wash and it was tangled bad so I ended up doing chunky twists. But that didnt work so i had to detangled the chunky twists and it felt like i never touched my hair in weeks even thought it was only 2 days. So i detangled again. Each time i had giant balls of hair.
I wanna know if I need to use extreme moisture to try and get my hair back to its normal state
What porosity is your hair? I find myself also getting dry, easily tangled curls even if i moisturize snd style it 💀i have like 3c curls
This is long but someone else may be havinĝ this issue and may not know what caused it or might have soma answers. My biracial 3c hair was always relaxed from a child to my early 20s. Now that im natural my corkscrew spirals came in and are 3 inches past bra strap length but my hair is matting so bad it turns into locks. Doesnt matter if i detangle with a tangle teaser and tons of conditioner a few hours later its matted all in a ball from ends and locked at the roots where fingers get stuck at the scalp. This all started when i started using cantu in my hair for a year and putting coconut oil in my hair, also with grapeseed oil and avacado oil mixed but more coconut oil than anything. I noticed after some time after shampooing i had a hard dry sand paper like film on my hair like a very dry coating of old cooking oils on my strands which all caused it to mat and make my lower bra stap length hair mat up to where it looks shoulder length... and plus i was using products that i did not know had protien in it. Which everything i bought without knowing had some type of protien in it. Protien seems to stiffen, dry out and make my hair feel like hay. I feel like companies focus way to much on protein in every product including conditioners and all styling products and they arent focusing enough on moisture. Ever since ive used those things in my hair ive tried giant bins full of brands of hair products all ranging from as i am, texture ID, Camilie rose, marc anthony, africian pride, shea moisture (which used to work prior to my set back), aunt Jackie's, mielle organics, carols daughters, and many many many more, alot of them felt great in my hair once it was soaking wet but once i air dried my curls and my hair was 100 percent or almost fully air dried my hair would feel brittle and dry from the products.... ive even tried the LCO method with coconut oil, grape seed, avacado, and olive oil. I even tried using camille rose Coco honey nibs oil as a sealant and should have just kept it for my scalp instead of waisting so much of it to cover all my stands after my leave in and cream..... im done using cooking oils for my hair. I will stick to purchasing oils that are made for the scalp like jojobo, argan etc that are as natural as possible. I know when i was little my mom used her Caucasian hair products in my hair like aussie, pantene, etc, it didnt matt into locks,, it was always silky and soft. I dont know ehst else to do. I just gave my self a light trim. Im losing so much length. Ive lost 4 inches since last year not counting the inch or so i cut off. Im lost. One thing i have not tried was gettinf someone to cornrow my hair. This is do depressing and such a waste of money on over 100 products since beginning of 2022. Having to try to pull the locks apart and comb through them is breaking and ripping my hair. Its also thinning it out by taking a comb or tangle teaser to it. I wish i had a solution 😢 i wish my hair would stay moisturized longer than a 1 day or less. Good luck to anyone else suffering.
Thank u for sharing ur experience. I tried Cantu shea butter & it destroyed my hair. I'm also going through the same issues with extreme tangling & dryness, one lf the culprits I found out eas that
My hair hates anything either coconut oil. I also gave to use shampoos that contain sulfates. I heard hard water destroys the hair so I'm about to get a water softener & see if it will help with my diminishing hair
I haven't completely solved this problem but it has gotten better.
My 4a low porosity hair is very prone to matting between washes, let alone if I let it go too long without detangling it. And the products you use can themselves cause your hair to mat.
So I found a couple of cheap products and a method that works better than the expensive stuff and fancy wash day routines. I have tested my products off and on by taking one away to see how my hair is affected. These products and routine work for me to keep my hair moist which is essential to stop matting.
One tactic I am going to try soon is detangling the hair with oil before wetting it. Since water on mats might be causing them to loc up. This apparently happens to people a lot when they take out braids and don't detangle first before washing.
Currently, I first don't use any shampoo or conditioner on my hair, because they inevitably mess up my natural curl pattern and also cause my hair to mat. I only gently scratch my scalp all over, finger detangle into two sections (can take a long time) doing one side at a time, then rinse the hair out thoroughly with just plain warm water in the shower.
I need to do this every 3 days, on the third day. I often wait too long but 3 maybe even 2 days is the magic number.
After I get out of the shower and before the hair dries I blot my ends from dripping gently with a towel and continue with the LCO method (best for low porosity). Cotton towels can cause matting. Best to use a microfiber towel or a cotton tshirt.
The water is my L. My C is a cheap leave in, Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine, available for about $6 at any store that sells shampoo. My O is a cheap oil cream, Hollywood Beauty Castor Oil Hair Treatment, sometimes available at grocery stores but they do have it at most beauty supply stores for about $8.
You don't need to glop these on, just get a reasonable amount worked into the scalp, edges and strands. They keep the hair moist until the next wash day.
I keep my hair in two twists (middle part) that I also band using a few miniature scrunchies. If I'm going to wear it out or smooth it down I apply a little more product and maybe some gel. Although gel breaks off the hair so I stopped using it everyday like I used to. Otherwise I don't reapply anything.
I have a satin cap that I'm sometimes neglectful about wearing at night, but it's also essential to stop matting. I turn it inside out so the seams don't irritate my hairline or skin, and you have to experiment with the angle so it's also not too tight on the hairline. Pulling it down a little lower or a little higher from my hairline seems most comfortable when sleeping and stays on too which satin scarfs don't.
This routine works reasonably well to reduce matting if I don't wait past 3 days to use it again.
There is always some matting though. You have to really be patient with detangling in the shower. Sometimes I just turn the water off and sit down or take a break. It's really important that you take your time so you can save as much hair as possible if there are some spots.
I use water, the same products and also some olive oil.
First I go over it on the surface to smooth it out with my thumbs. Then I go in deeper where the mats are.
You isolate the matted sections one by one. One mat at a time, you start pulling the strands you can loose out of the mat. Using products to create slip so the freed strands will slide out (or sometimes break part way) when you gently pull. Sometimes you literally have to pull one strand at a time. Also try to break up the mat from time to time by going into the knots and gently trying to work them apart. You can use a rattail comb to try to pick them out. Then go back to detangling. If one mat is at a standstill and no hair is releasing, then section it off and go to the next one. Keep going through the hair until it's all detangled.
You can use a hair tie or barrette to keep the freed hair out of the way and so you can see your progress. Eventually you get to the end and all that's left is the shed hair. Then go to the next mat, and once they're all out finger through both sections gently one at a time until they're both smooth and no tangles.
It's unavoidable that some hair is going to break off when it's matted and you're detangling. You save as much as you can through a good routine to start with, then patience in picking it out of the matts.
Another thing I am going to try adding to my routine is blow drying the hair with a defuser attachment to finish my routine after my LCO is in. I think part of the reason my hair still mats more than I'd like is me air drying it at night and falling asleep before it's 100% dry. And without my satin cap on.
But like I said this routine makes it so much better. *IF I actually follow it.😅 I'm hoping the blow dryer will help eliminate this and retain my new growth. You have to use a defuser on low or medium heat and keep the dryer away from the ends.
Hope this helps.❤ Blessings ✨✨✨🙏🏽
I’m thrilled to update and say I was finally blessed with understanding of this issue after so many episodes of my hair tangling and breaking and not getting it so continuing to do the same thing. Simple but makes all the difference, I started detangling my hair before I wash it. No more matting. I’ve done this two wash days now in a row and it’s confirmed. That’s what the problem was, my shed hairs were locing around the rest of my hair when the water hit it and separating it all after it was wet was leading to breakage. I found out that this happens to people who don’t know after they take down braids. I keep my hair in twists all week and now on wash day I use some EVOO for cheap slip and dry detangle while watching RUclips. The first time I did it, it took a full hour per side. Second time, 30 minutes for the whole head. It used to take me so long to detangle my hair in the shower I would have to turn the water off and sit down. Now my shower and shampoo together take maybe 20 minutes. My hair grows so I’ve had several setbacks. No more and now I can finally grow it to its fullest potential. Grateful 🙌🏽 Hope this helps ❤️✨
After I take down braids, I use cowboy magic to comb through any matted sections. I cant wear my hair in a wash and go for more than 3 days or my hair will tangle around itsself. I mostly have to keep my hair in a stretched state like in twists or or buns.
Steam in addition to conditioner works great for detangling matted hair.
My roots always get tangled / matted.
Mine too
My hair gets to knotted I have to dump crap tons of conditioner in my hair to brush it out, my hair is fairly straight/wavy but every damn day I have to brush 2/3 dreads out of my head my scalp always hurts my hair is very long and like fluffy I love my long hair but I'm so tired of the knots
My hair hates staying in a protective style past 3-4 weeks, it’s like it gets weaker? So I always have to use a strengthening treatment after taking it down (like henna, ashwaghandha or a protein treatment)
Same... thanks for the advice.
Is your protective style to tight.
Same!!!! It breaks off gets tangled up after I get braids ! It’s horrible
Hi Melissa…. I did cut my hair all off back in 2012…due to tangled hair from braids. I have from what I’ve been told 4A type hair and in some places my hair is 3C…my hair grew back fast but gets tangled especially when wet. These tips that you mentioned do help. Thank you.🙏💜
What's worse, webbing or matting? I think they are partners in crime😳
The webbing is ridiculous
My hair used to never do this...yes I wear wigs but the matting is crazy in the last year. What is going on? Do I need to change my diet
Yes. Change your diet, take a herbal detox, and take some vitamins.
This video is helpful and these comments are really helpful bc im sitting trying to decide if i should chop my hair off and start over bc the mattes are so annoying. But im not going to quit yet.
Don’t give up!
As i have learned to leave my hair alone it is started to grow a lotttt but the matting is so bad. Why....i was so close to shaving my hair but i took 2 days and 5 movies later i detangle every section. It was the worst
Ugh I felt this 😢
@Ischic77 my hair if growing amazingly but as I age or as my diet changes....omg...the matting is insane...yes I wear wigs because it's my protective style that I may have to give up
can you share what you did?
I cut ,never know what to do, girl the struggle is real, but thank God it could have been worse
What product you use to get out the knots?
My hair gets tangled easily...I detangled it three days ago and its already matted 😭😭😭
I find that red palm oil or coconut oil really helps with detangling...
Coconut CREAM works best for me. 🥥🌴 RIGHT OUT OF THE GROCERY AISLE!
Does anyone else's hair get messy when you wear a hood, such as a coat hood?
My hair started getting tangled and matted a few months ago. Never happened before in my entire life! It hurts!
My hair is dry and get matted sometimes im trying to stay away from perms and i just comb my hair probably need some iron pills
Sorry this is a really old video/I dont remember if I already said these things BUT try doing protein treatments on a regular (I like aphogee 2 step...I have a few videos on it if you dont know how to use it) and make sure you are deep conditioning with heat! Also consider the LOC method or figure out the best method that is going to lock in moisture. I hope that helps...let me know.
@MelissaDenise OK, I will try this I been combing it so far, and it has not been matted
Girl im impatient
Sameeee that’s why I found some ✂️✂️lol!!!
@@MelissaDenise 😂😂😂😭I snipped it off too then I complain my hair doesn't grow
My hair is extremely tangled matted, on the right ear above my hair had turned was a pouch like a round ball. It's not possible for me to even tie hair together. I need a urgent help I am embarrassed to visit saloon as I am looking for home remedies something like that so that I can do it myself madam. Please I plead you beg you to me me immediately. Please I am getting into depression feels like killing myself for this hair. Help help help madam helpr
I’m so sorry you are going through this. I know life can get hard for many reasons but please reach out to your support system. I’m here too…my DMs/emails are always open if you need someone to talk to.
As far as your hair I would try and saturate it in oil and conditioner and slowly try to break up the matted section. You’re gonna have to work it in and slowly try to pull your hair apart/detangle. If you have to trim that section of your hair, do not worry….it’s gonna be ok bc hair grows and it will grow back before you know it. If you’re struggling to get the matted section detangled, don’t be ashamed or feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to ask for help…that’s what the salon is there for…to help you. I think the salon would be a great option. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. And remember I’m around if you need me ❤️
