A good note to add is that the ideal Air:Fuel ratio (stoich) for e85 is 9.8 vs gasoline's 14.7:1. So for the same amount of air moving through the engine you want at least 50% more fuel injected just to not be lean..This means larger injectors are required to hit the same power number as gasoline at the top end. Another problem with E85 beside the increased fuel consumption is availability. If you can only run E85, you are now leashed to a certain area and likely are places you cannot go with said vehicle because it isn't available
little correction: the stoich ratio of E85 is much lower than gasoline, meaning you can stuff in much more fuel for the same amount of air, so the end result is you have more energy available per revolution, even if it is less energy dense for an identical quantity. The added fuel cools the combustion making it less likely to detonate, so you can add boost and timing, so more bang from that as well.
E85, or "fire water," as I like to call it, makes SUCH a big difference in performance in my Focus ST. I run an E85 blend, around E30 (30% ethanol), and just by switching fuel and tunes, it's about a fifty horsepower difference. Pretty wild. My MPG's have absolutely tanked.
@@eggertrpetthere’s 10% ethanol in the majority of “normal” gas pumps in the us. 10% does not kill motors, nor is it bad for daily driving. You probably have it in your car right now
I would love to do at least an E30 blend in my Speed3, preferably do the work to go full E85 with an auxiliary setup. But the closest gas station that sells E85 is like 40 miles away. 😂
I have a FFV. I noticed that going from 87 to 89 (basic to midgrade) nets me almost +1 MPG, however the cost difference does not fully pan out. I started experimenting, and found out that a 1:4 blend of E85 and 87 octane makes ~90 octane and i get my +1 for, and sometimes cheaper than just straight 87. Fuel lamp comes on, 4 gallons of corn, and 12 gallons of regular. If you have a flex fuel I highly recommend giving this a go.
Here in Brazil, alcohol fuel (from sugar cane) has been widely used for almost 40 years and for good times, mainly by those who want more power, where the combustion of engines is cooler, better stoichiometry, better compression ratio and adjustment in In general, even high-octane gasoline is less polluting.

Unfortunately some A-Hole ran me off the Road and Totaled my 2019 STI, Thats why I'm driving a 2020 STI Completely Stock, expect a K&N Air filter. Still have 310 HP Stock. Still Plenty Fun in the Twisties. 👍😁
We don’t have e85 at the pump in most parts of Canada. But my company is the Canadian distributor for Gulf race fuels. I sell tons of E85 and E98 fuel to tuner shops. Our E85 and E98 is ethanol and race gas, not pump gas. It makes BIG power with the right tune.
Been running E85 for about 7 - 8 years now on my car. It's flex fuel tuned, so it can run on other types of fuel, which, if you're daily driving is a big bonus in terms of mileage and cost.
Build it correctly the first time is the best advice I’ve ever given on this channel I built my fox body👈 with the factory block that came in the car to 600 wheel (over the forbidden 600 flywheel) horsepower with a Paxton supercharger almost 15 years ago and I drive her hard and she holds together and it’s put on 20k+. When I built it I put the absolute best parts that were available in the market at the time in the motor and it works I’ve only opened it once and that was to change the Fel-Pro head gaskets out to Cometic because when we were putting the engine together the first time we could not get a hold of Cometic gaskets
That point about E85 having worse efficiency is really important, because power in an engine is about how the engine can control the burn, not how much energy the fuel itself contains. I see so many people suggesting various explosives as fuel additives and I'm sat here like "Do you want to throw a rod?"
I run all my stuff on E-85 here in the midwest Korn belt E-85 is about $2.50 a gallon 91 is touching $5.00 dollars so even with the 15-20% MPG loss its worth it
They actually just that did basically! Check out yesterday’s video on the 100 year old car, they breaks down the same concept there and explain why modern cars are so much more efficient in terms of power.
but they dont ........ it really comes down to the model . also the record holding engine for most power per liter ever was a bisimoto build of a 91 honda accord single cam vtec engine its record still hasn't been beaten and that engine design has been around since the mid 80s

Glad to see yall back in the Subi set. Would still love to see a guest appearance by one of the major Subi YT guys... Smeedia, Bader, etc. Tanner would actually fit right in with the squad.
Hope you went through a few full fuel tank cycles with the same e85 to ensure the ECU adjusts the timing to its fullest. Also, it should be pointed out that lowcar might've gotten one less hp, but it's a 20.9% increase compared to high car's 17% increase from 405hp.
What do you mean? Like if they didn't drain the tank? IIRC those subaru ECUs do not adjust timing on the fly when flashed, or otherwise. Thats what the tuner is for. I also winced that they didnt talk about rescaling the fuel tables with updated numbers for the larger injectors. Depending on the jump in fuel flow and injector type, you can do catastrophic damage to your build... Also...E85 is RARELY actually 85% ethanol, even the summer blend. I think over 4 years of daily driving an E85 car across multiple states, the highest I ever saw was 81% it was usually 75-79% at the sensor.
@@mm6705 I did not consider the flashed ecus. I was thinking of subarus adjusting their timing for knock correction from factory. I had a noticable difference when I filled up 98 octane vpower coz I usually use 102 octane. The ecus take a few fuel cycles (filling up and driving it empty) to adjust properly.
Can't wait to see the STI 6-speed conversion on Hi-car! One element of Subaru ownership that Hi-Low missed (in my opinion) is the "car Lego" aspect of buying an old WRX / Legacy / whatever and taking advantage of the Subaru parts bin to upgrade your car with parts off different Subarus. So many people have shown incredible creativity over the years to make these cars faster, stronger, or just to bring them back from the dead better than they were before. I think once you guys get a taste of that modification experience you might understand why people get so into these cars despite all the things that can go wrong. (I'm sure Justin would agree, after all, making parts meant for other Subarus fit your Subaru is like, Chapter 1 of SVX ownership 😅).
Wish these sort of shows would talk about torque numbers. That said I've ran my daily gti on straight e85 for about two years now with just great results.
So happy Hi/low is back, only difference is this time I can use your guys videos to add the mods onto my 06 STI, absolutely love the Hawkeye! Looking forward for the next video!
Love the high/low series, it's some of the best stuff Donut puts out, but I do miss my B2Bs. Love watching everything y'all put out when I come home from work :D
Yall should buy a new car and an old car of the same model. Then throw money at the old car so that it costs the same as the new car and compare the two.
The next thing these will need are beefy transmissions. Wrx like to shred gears around the 350+ range. The 5 speed is made of glass. The STI 6 speed is solid, but it has different gear ratios so you would need the rear diff as well
I think a salvage to rebuilt series would be awesome if you guys see this and are looking for some new projects. Also, my green corduroy Donut Racing Hat is dope!
There is a video I can’t find that has some guys taking a stock old Chevy truck, early 90s model I think, and all they did was add E85 and tune. The stock numbers were pretty lame but just with the E85+tune they almost tripled the power. Obviously the entire drive train would destroy itself quickly if they drive it like that, but it was impressive. I think they upgraded the injectors and pump also. Wish I could find the video.
I have a Ford truck that can run on E-85, I hadn't ever tried to use the stuff before I bought this truck. I was surprised to feel a noticeable difference in power using E-85, but now I know it's not out of the ordinary.
i’ll be running pump 93 on a 12.5:1 comp FA20. goal is 400whp for now, and 600whp when i’ve got the whole drivetrain strengthened + e85. i’m running a 6266 gen 2 precision turbo

Opera versions about 8-12 was SO much better than any other contemporary browser that it wasn't funny. You could browse three times as fast with five times the control over content and rendering, with half the hardware drag. It was brilliant. And then they turned into yet another flavor of Chrome and ditched most of the best features. Maybe it's good again? I don't know, but who has time? E85's OK, and if I had a racing beater . . . yeah, why not. Burn more fuel per second in the same engine to yield more power. You *should* be able to use that for better mileage instead of more grunt, but I wouldn't bother, either.
Ethanol is great. Another benefit is that it has an even greater cooling effect on the combustion chamber than gasoline, which in turn helps reduce stress, and while you get lower mpg, E85 is typically much cheaper than gasoline so it balances out.
Kinda cool seeing the heat dissipation of the brakes around 13:53. Overall a cool video that explains the changes needed for E85 and the benefits of it.
After looking at it, you're right. Didn't notice they were driving the orange one next to it but you can see the orange flash in other areas. Good catch.@@MuitoDaora
6:42 Always remember, when trying to add more fuel or more air to increase power, you are _always going to come up short of air_ before you hit the limit trying to add more fuel. Alcohol may have less energy density than gasoline, but even alcohol has more physical density than air. Shoving in more alcohol is stupid easy compared to getting as much oxygen as you can into an engine.

As much as I love them covering WRX and STIs, they really should have upgraded the small block with forged internals. I don't know any STI/WRX owner that didn't start their buiild by buying an upgraded small block \ oil system first.
I don't know if you have it on there or not but please install the coolant 4 mod and IAG oil pickup feed. They are mandatory. Especially if you don't want to blow these cars. Engine up another three times or ever many times they've blown up. I own a Hawkeye STI so I'm pretty experienced and the reason you probably had so much bad luck is cuz you got to spend as much as a turbo kit on stuff. Subaru should have put on the car to begin with before you add any power but those are the two big ones. Take it or leave it, but don't be surprised if it blows up without those two mods especially
Having a yellow gas cap is a good indication that the vehicle will run flex fuel. If the vehicle has a capless fuel filler, a yellow ring around the hole where the nozzle gets inserted signals E85 works for the vehicle. E85 and Flex fuel are different. I'm not sure that you can use Flex fuel in a car that's built for E85.

Smiles per gallon
Ethanol converts to water so it's not very good for daily driving. They started putting 5 and 10% ethanol in the gas in Europe. It kills motors.
@@eggertrpetthere’s 10% ethanol in the majority of “normal” gas pumps in the us. 10% does not kill motors, nor is it bad for daily driving. You probably have it in your car right now
@@eggertrpetit's actually better to daily drive it than let it sit if it uses e85
87 octane has more energy than 89 octane.
Try running 89 or 90 octane ethanol free gas!
Really glad to see the WRXes revisited. This series has really made me miss my 2004 WRX wagon, though...
Any video with James is a great one
I tell Ya, after over 30+ years of working on cars I really Prefer just Driving my 2020 Subaru STI and mentoring people and watching other people work on Cars. 👍😁
I love the Hawkeye WRX/STI, personally it is the 2nd best looking STI, Right after the 2000 Subaru STI, Sadly never came to the U.S, but I have the 2nd best think a 2000 2.5RS which looks completely the same except the 2.5RS has Fog Lights. I really love rhe fact that I only put a Downpipe, K&N AirFilter, Modified the Air Box, a Cobb Tuner and had my 2019 STI Pro-Tuned and made 400 H.P. Crazy how far the Tech has Come Since the Hawkeye STI. One of the best Parts about the 18-21 STI Is the Stock Transmission will Handle 1000HP. Unfortunately some A-Hole ran me off the Road and Totaled my 2019 STI, Thats why I'm driving a 2020 STI Completely Stock, expect a K&N Air filter. Still have 310 HP Stock. Still Plenty Fun in the Twisties. 👍😁
I hope you have forged internals ready because stock internals won't hold the power you're making, same with the 5 speeds
Laughs in Josh Bader
Unsure if they went forged when they rebuilt it 673 times but I’d hope they did, but ya, 5mt days are numbered haha, ty85 6 speed inbound hopefully
@@jeremiahjorenby2275 Bader is a wizard hes the only exception 😂
Zack is on point with all the mechanical work..... Except for plugging the battery back in
Loved the Halo shields recharge sound when Nolan put on his safety glasses.
i knew i heard that
We don’t have e85 at the pump in most parts of Canada. But my company is the Canadian distributor for Gulf race fuels. I sell tons of E85 and E98 fuel to tuner shops. Our E85 and E98 is ethanol and race gas, not pump gas. It makes BIG power with the right tune.
James’ confidence working on sensitive parts has come such a long way since the 350 days
Been running E85 for about 7 - 8 years now on my car. It's flex fuel tuned, so it can run on other types of fuel, which, if you're daily driving is a big bonus in terms of mileage and cost.
I would love to see a HiLow where each team have a total budget and have to choose parts (and maybe cars) to install based on that budget.
When I built it I put the absolute best parts that were available in the market at the time in the motor and it works I’ve only opened it once and that was to change the Fel-Pro head gaskets out to Cometic because when we were putting the engine together the first time we could not get a hold of Cometic gaskets
hitting up the old hi low cars is awesome! love watching these vids
That point about E85 having worse efficiency is really important, because power in an engine is about how the engine can control the burn, not how much energy the fuel itself contains. I see so many people suggesting various explosives as fuel additives and I'm sat here like "Do you want to throw a rod?"
I wish their videos were longer and showed more of the modification process on the car
I run all my stuff on E-85 here in the midwest Korn belt E-85 is about $2.50 a gallon 91 is touching $5.00 dollars so even with the 15-20% MPG loss its worth it
James actually doing something? I’m so happy to see that, James is my fav host and seeing him working is cool
Yes! More HiLow content!
You guys should do an episode on why modern cars get more power with the same amount of fuel than old ones.
They actually just that did basically! Check out yesterday’s video on the 100 year old car, they breaks down the same concept there and explain why modern cars are so much more efficient in terms of power.
@@marcusd745 oh cool thanks
@@marcusd745100yr old car with a massive airplane engine. Rule of cool says it's the more efficient motor.
but they dont ........ it really comes down to the model . also the record holding engine for most power per liter ever was a bisimoto build of a 91 honda accord single cam vtec engine its record still hasn't been beaten and that engine design has been around since the mid 80s
More power because of higher compression
Not the Halo shield recharge sound when Nolan changed his glasses 😂
Donut never disappoints
Except for their choice of cars to work on
They disappoint supporting EVs 😂
They do
Clearly you haven't seen the reception of Stockys.
Except Up To Speed isn't here anymore, I agree.
@5:55 changing glasses with the halo shield recharge sound.. nice
Wish E85 was accessible in the UK, got a Mustang GT arriving and the FBO E85 setups are insane!
E85 is not accessible in the U.K.? Didn't know that.
@@chrisginoc We don't have the same massive corn lobby here, we've only just introduced E10. Also as it's "up to 10%" testing has found most E10 is below that, what it does mean is cars and logistics are ready that if the oil price rockets more Ethanol can be added.
@@chrisginoc yeah, very hard to get outside of drums of Sunoco at hundreds of £ for 50L, to my knowledge no pump E85 in the UK at all ☹️
@@chrisginoc Same for Canada no acces to E85, we only have 94 oct
@@wraithcadmusThat's kinda funny cause in the US, basically all gas has up to 10%, maybe 15% can't remember, ethanol in it unless otherwise specified. Amber waves of grain and whatnot
I want to see Nolan get the high car in these challenges for once
Wish these sort of shows would talk about torque numbers. That said I've ran my daily gti on straight e85 for about two years now with just great results.
Babe wake up, donut just dropped another hi-low video
Just gotta thank Donut for helping me get my drive back to do more work on my car. You guys are awesome. Keep up the great work.
Y’all should do a high low but with drag racing. A good car would be 96-98 mustang gt’s
So happy Hi/low is back, only difference is this time I can use your guys videos to add the mods onto my 06 STI, absolutely love the Hawkeye! Looking forward for the next video!
Donut, doing the research for us! Great team!
Nice "There will be blood" reference James.
Dude !!!!!!!! These guys just explain stuff so much easier than other guys on RUclips like fr fr ‼️💯
Love it, comedy with car building. Great combo!! These guys are hilarious.!🤣
i’ll be running pump 93 on a 12.5:1 comp FA20. goal is 400whp for now, and 600whp when i’ve got the whole drivetrain strengthened + e85. i’m running a 6266 gen 2 precision turbo
Thank you Donut, these two scoobies are what I’d love to if I had the money. You’re living my dream, which means I can spend my money on beer ( kids, house, Mrs, car, workvan and bikes )
"it pulls like a taffy maker" was *chefs kiss*. reminds me of the random stuff the top gear trio used to say
You know what I would love to see for the next high low? Old Timer car restoration, would be a long ass series of videos, but would be worth it.
i really liked the halo shield recharge sound at 5:53 lmfao
Y’all should make a drag racing series with 2 American cars like for them to see thisssss boys 🦅🔥
Ethanol is great. Another benefit is that it has an even greater cooling effect on the combustion chamber than gasoline, which in turn helps reduce stress, and while you get lower mpg, E85 is typically much cheaper than gasoline so it balances out.
5:00 tab islands, if I get my hands on this I’ll eventually have the whole internet open on my browser 😂😂
Love this episode! hope every project cars in Donut get driven actively
Kinda cool seeing the heat dissipation of the brakes around 13:53. Overall a cool video that explains the changes needed for E85 and the benefits of it.
What? Do you mean the reflection of the orange WRX? lol
Wouldn’t be a Donut video without blowing up another WRX!
…
Huh, I guess this wasn’t a Donut video.
I loved this, from a Brazilian viewer seen a video about ethanol seens funny, as we have pure ethanol engines here
I hope in the futurt Donut Media does a special series of building a vehicle from scratch like a locost7. Running the whole 9 yards about building a car from scratch and walking through the complex laws to register a one off vehicle from scratch including registration and licensing.
I would love anew money pit series where the focus was a classic of some sort that’s carbureted.
Guys you need to bring Sandro into the crew or at least let him be a guest every now and then. I haven't seen a more badass, positive, wholesome guy like that dude. He would be an amazing gem in Donut
I’ve seen a few people begging for a new Hi-Low special… I bet this makes em real happy!
If you have trouble unhooking the fuel lines, try warning up the fitting with a lighter. Works every time.
1) Awesome! 2) how many more engines y'all gonna eat! 3) are trans updates coming? Sequential box time :D I am curious to see Low's option.
Forgot to mention another pro...due to the appx 30% more fuel sprayed, you get a slew of anti knock benefits. Its nearly impossible to knock/predetonate on E85
I am currently playing your playlist in the crew and all I got to say is that you guys are doing amazing in the car community keep up the great work you guys are BEASTS p.s let me keep that Subaru 😂😂
As much as I love them covering WRX and STIs, they really should have upgraded the small block with forged internals. I don't know any STI/WRX owner that didn't start their buiild by buying an upgraded small block \ oil system first.
Pretty sure you dumped all dirt from the top of the fuel pump tower directly into the take when showing off the filter 😂
I'm glad they have the long-hair around to do all the actual mechanic stuff.
The fact that James even said "were gonna break this transmission" is the cherry on top
9:26 REALLY trusting that fuel filter will catch those microscopic shavings
10 years ago these dudes didn't even know what compression was...
@MrDonutGiveaway. you keep it, I don't want it.
Do a HiLow season on Classic Muscle cars for either drag racing or modernization.
Oh shit. Sequential incoming. These builds are becoming sick boys
