This just popped up for me, randomly. Reminds me of buying spoons at yard sales as a kid to make, well, spoon lures. A little enamel paint, some split rings, a treble hook, and a barrel swivel.

i started making lures a couple years ago i made my first lure out of a tree branch it. wasn’t good my any means but i kept going and i’m slowly getting better and better need one of those band saws soon tho my tools are holding me back a lot since i only have hand tools to work with i recently switched from using hard woods to using soft bolsa wood and it’s been a learning curve bolsa isn’t that forgiving especially when all u have is hand tools but i’m happy with how good the lures are turning out id definitely recommend u use bolsa but it can be a little pricey or at least it was for me in the uk i paid ab £8 for like a meter definitely not as cheap and using branches and scrap wood like i used to but the lures r turning out so much better but try different woods figure out what u like and i’m sure you’ll all start making great progress 👍
*It's great caught caught a brown trout on the first cast. **enjoyable.fishing** recommend if it was a little smaller it would be more effective for different species*

AWESOME! Well done! Yours is the first video that I've watched about making a lure. It all seemed pretty doable until the paint spraying.
I’m probably going to be making another one where I just hand paint the whole thing to show what can be done without an airbrush.
Airbrushing is for us, for fishes if U paint it with a brush, it is more then enough. I have done lures till now this way. Recently got Revell's airbrush but don't have time to practice for now and to finish some lures to prepare them for painting.

Man I must say! You, Marlin baits, Engineer Angling have brought the beast in me! Reason why I say this is because I've been wanting to make hard baits for quite sometime now. You guys inspired me so much I said screw it and broke out of my shell. Now I'm doing it to. I have a channel also it's called Midwest Skarfish. I've only made 2 videos of me making crankbaits. But there will be so much more! I just want to say thank you to you guys for the inspiration!!!

What would you recommend, if you were building a shopping list, to set up shop...what would be the first tools youd buy? Ive made 2 lures, a minnow and a topwater plug but im just hand carving now. Id love to hear what you think. Great work btw.
I pretty much have a knife, some sandpaper and a small drill bit for the hardware. And that's all.
I would say a cheap bandsaw and disc sander. Those 2 things make a world of difference

I don’t have a band saw but I do have a jigsaw. Which I guess could work
I’m sure you could probably make that work if your careful but if you can get ahold to a bandsaw, that’s definitely the way to go.

It can get extensive. Just start with a knife some wood and sandpaper and work your way up.

That’s a good question but I’m not sure I have the best answer lol. A band saw is probably one of the more useful tools to have when making wooden baits but you could always use a hand saw to trim off excess material and then use a knife to carve it down to shape. That’s basically how I started but eventually I was able to purchase my bandsaw and it made a world of difference. Good luck man and be careful with all that carving, cuts are inevitable!

Off the top of my head the biggest investments would probably be your airbrush, compressor and paint Bandsaw and belt/disc sander. Other than that you’ll need a good carving knife ( box cutter works great ) stainless steel wire around .40mm, wire snips, sandpaper, wood sealer ( most of the time I use superglue ) I would have to sit down and make a whole list lol but advice I could give is to watch my vids. I usually meeting everything I use.

I appreciate you being a long time sub that’s awesome 😎 and I only ever use the 1/8 lexan just because that’s all I have. There’s been a lot of situations where I would prefer something thinner but idk how well the 1/16 lexan would hold up. One thing a lot of people use is pcb board or bread board. But I’m not sure of the best place to order that. Hope this helps.

The wire pliers came from Walmart and I ordered the wire on eBay. I’ve also got a link to some wire in the description of this video. The diameter is .40 I believe

Are the hook and head wires attached through the bore holes or are they glued into the hole individually? Just wondering what a 15 pound pike needs so the lure doesn’t rip apart.
Gluing in Screw eyes or twist wire for the line-tie and hook hangs would probably be fine but if you want to be sure I’d go with a solid 1 piece wiring harness (thru-wire). It would be a sad day losing a 15lb pike due to a wire failure.
Also I’d make sure your ( drag game ) is on point 👍🏼
Is the super glue really strong enough to hold a fish? Like would you use it if you're targeting big fish?
You could definitely catch big fish on it. A solid one piece wire harness would be more robust, but the screw eyes with superglue are excellent as well. I’ve never had one fail. A lot of it has to do with your drag when your fighting a big fish. 9 times out of 10 your hooks are going to bend before the screw eyes fail and if that’s the case you need to give the fish a little more drag anyway.

The bandsaw just makes things easier but you can use pretty much anything as long as it works for you. You could use a handsaw or even just a carving knife.

What is the material you use to make the scales when air brushing and where do you get it.
I can’t remember what exactly I used in this video. It was probably window screen which you can get from pretty much anywhere.

Hmm that would require a complicated answer and to be honest I just do a lot of testing in order to get the action the way I want it. To make it swim like a fish you have to account for the weight, buoyancy, shape, line tie placement and lip size, shape and angle. I know this doesn’t quite answer your question but that’s why I do a lot of testing when I’m making a new lure.
what if i don’t have all the power tools? what should i use until i have enough to afford everything?
That’s a good question. I should probably make a video on that. Honestly you will have to get kind of creative. When I first started out I didn’t have all the tools I have now. Just get a knife you can carve ( a utility knife works really well ) and just start carving on a smaller piece of wood. Or even a stick. You’d be surprised how much you’ll learn by just doing that.
Why baking soda in the glue? Does it make the glue dry faster?
When you add superglue to baking soda it cures almost instantly and is hard and able to be carves or sanded.

I think you’re talking about the hook hangers. It is stainless steel wire. You can also use screw eyes

Most of the time I use .41 diameter stainless steel that I buy in precut pieces on eBay. Also I use stainless picture frame wire from the hardware store. Really just whatever I can find as long as it’s stainless.

try to seal a lure with super glue before drilling - especially eyes. Then wood doesn't chip out on the edges.

That’s a good question. Besides using a bandsaw the only other thing I could think would be to use a hand saw to cut off excess wood then use a knife to fine tune the shape.

Can you please tell me abiut the bsi epoxy?I asked a shop here and they told me after drying it has a yellowish tint.What have you seen?Is in clear or yellow?
I haven’t noticed any yellowing but over time there’s a chance it could begin to yellow. But like I said I haven’t noticed. You can also use devcon 2 ton. That’s what I’ve been using lately.

Idk what a spiny dogfish is but yes, yes it will catch one.

That a question I’ve wondered myself but I’ve never had any strip out. The engineered angler has a video where he tests superglue vs epoxy for hook hangers. He put a scale on them to see how much force it took to break them. Surprisingly it took quite a bit. If I knew I was going to large roomy fish I’d go with a solid wiring harness though.

Screw eyes or hook hangers. I know they make them but I’ve never bought any. I would look for stainless steel if you buy any.
What wire are you using? I'm struggling to find the right wire . I've used all sorts so far but can't get it twisted right. I've seen a mild steel mig welding wire on a spool. Would that be suitable?
I haven’t tried the mig wire myself so I’m not sure about that. The wire I use is solid strand stainless steel picture frame type wire I got from True Value. The other wire I use comes pre cut and is .041 stainless steel I get from a guy on eBay. Also a lot of people use the wire you can get from harbor freight that comes in a blue cylinder. Can’t remember what it’s called. The best stuff I’ve found for twisting is the stuff I get from true value though.
19 gauge galva steel is good
What is something I can seal the wood with
I normally use superglue because it dries pretty much instantly but the better option would prob be polyurethane or some kind of commercial wood sealer.

That prob just means that it’s a soft wood which means it will be very buoyant. That will work good unless the wood is rotten. Just make sure once you get it carved to the final shape that you seal the wood pretty well.
Looks fantastic as normal! Did you thin your BSI? Looked thinner than normal. I use Everclear to thin mine and makes the working time longer. Nice job!
Thank you 😊. No I don’t thin it. I use a heat gun and it makes it more runny. If it starts thickening up on you just hit it with some heat and it will become more workable.

That’s actually a very good idea for making lures pretty quick. Especially if you paid the dowels with a lathe.
Why baking soda ?
For some reason the baking soda hardens up very solid and is easy to sand. And it hardens almost instantly if your using a thin super glue. The may be better stuff out there for filler but nothing as quick and easy as a little superglue and baking soda.

I am very grateful for the answer. I have one more question. From my experience, lures that flutter while sinking, they emit flashes of light and tend to attract more fish. Do you know how to achieve that with a wooden lure.?
Honestly I haven’t tried tackling a lure like that. If I were to guess I would say it has a lot to do with the shape “profile” of the lure.

You’d be surprised how strong the connection is. The line would break before the hook eyes pull out. Plus if you control your drag properly you shouldn’t have to worry about either.

Do not use a band saw like this you'll loose your fingers use the sander to shape only use the band saw for ruff cuts

I've had other BPM baits ruclips.net/user/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 before and they've pretty much always came through for me with the suskie smallies here and even with the walleye and pike, but I realized I didn't have an "in-between" pattern so this junebug one fills that role in no problem. it pairs up magnificently with a junebug Zoom Z-craw Jr that was trimmed a couple millimeters before the hook slots and rigged sideways for that fatter panfish side profile while still being a nice'n'compact presentation, a real power-finesse bait. Hell, it was so pretty I even bothered to fotosketch the pic into a watercolor painting image just to show you it's beauty! Even the blades are really well made, sure, they're not of Hildebrandt-level exquisiteness but look at the bead's reflection on the colorado blade, definitely well-made! The only "problem" spot it had was a bald spot in the skirt but it was nothing that I couldn't easily fix with a but of tuggin'n'shiftin' with the strands for a couple of seconds, besides that it is pretty minty!
Beginners doesn't even have the machine tools..
