Pam loves parsnips a lot, so she's extra easy and cheap to befriend. Summer spangle is easy to grow for Caroline. Tulip for Evelyn. Hot pepper is for Shane or Lewis. Mead is best for Willy. You want him because he sends you recipe for escargot, which helps fishing skill.
I was literally about to post a comment mentioning Summer Spangle for Caroline. Precisely, buy a bunch from Pierre, grow them, store them and there you go - enough gifts for Caroline for the rest of the year.
Haley really likes daffodils. The first flower you can pick up anywhere in spring. I ended up getting her up to 5 hearts by summer Edit: then in summer and fall she loved sunflowers and you can regrow cause you can get multiple seeds upon harvest
To be honest, I like to become friends with any random villagers because I really like the cutscenes all these villagers have, especially Shane's... it's so heartwarming.

If you give them a loved gift that is iridium quality it gives like FOUR hearts!! The higher the quality the higher the bonus on top of the "loved" bonus. One of the best early game gifts to give people is parsnips. Lots of people like them and you are going to be growing lots of them most likely anyway. Lewis (the mayor) loves peppers so does Shane so they are another good growable item to gift.

The farming buffs from food can actually be pretty useful right before a harvest, since it increases your chance of getting a higher quality crop. If you're selling the crops directly or at least not processing all of it into artisan goods, it can result in a pretty big increase in profit for a harvest of a significant size.
Amethyst is also liked by almost everyone and it is easy to get from mines. I used one of my crystalariums to produce it and always have amethyst in my inventory. It makes making friends so much easier.
You forgot to mention that Sandy will occassionally give out Milk to friends who talk to her. Of course, you have to be in the desert to talk to her, so it's not really worth it to go there daily, but if you're there to buy seeds then just speaking to her is enough for her to just give you Milk.

In terms of game design, it makes sense that a lot of characters will like items you find starting the game. So daffodils, sure. But more so, daffodils genus is narcissus. Perhaps it speaks something of their personalities?
Actually if their birthday is, say, on a Monday and you've given them a gift already for that week the day before (Sunday), then that gift you give them on the Monday counts as the second gift of that week so instead of three gifts, you will be only able to give them two gifts again for that week.

There's heavy hints he's neglected, and if you marry him, one particular line of dialogue hints that he didn't choose to live in the basement. Thinking back, I can't remember one time, through heart event, festival, or otherwise, that any of his family spoke to him. I guess I'm still inferring things, though, since it's not explicitly stated.
Evelyn also gives you a garden pot and the recipe for it which allows you to grow almost anything indoors! And, Shane gives you a chance to hatch blue fancy chickens at 8 hearts.
