@@mxya707 I picked the mushrooms and I haven't regretted it since. Mushrooms are pretty profitable, they're the reason why I completed most of the bundles in the community center. I wasted a total of 5 in- real-life hours trying to get one purple mushroom. The mushroom cave came in and saved the day.

@@sketchystudios7624 You don't save any time in completing the CC, either way, you need to wait until the fall to either get an apple or common mushroom, you can complete the artisan bundle quicker that's about it, how desperate are you for a keg? You still need to wait until the middle of fall to complete the greenhouse so it's saved you zero time overall. And the money you make from mushrooms far out ways the money you save, 350 a month from fruit v 5000 for mushrooms, use the mushrooms to buy the saplings, you only need two saplings to complete the CC. So not only did the mushrooms make more than you saved you are left with a tree that continues to produce fruit every day. You'll get more apples in a year from a sapling that takes a month to grow and only produces fruit for a month than you will from the bat cave in an entire year. You only need to plant 1 apple tree and 1 other fruit by the middle of summer for you to be the exact same in terms of time to complete CC bundles.
@@24magiccarrot my mistake I ment getting the green house also I did try the mushrooms in another save they did provide quick money when ever I needed money I would just sell the 40-60 common mushrooms I had but I do have to say in the late game they were more of a chore …….but still the early game money was beautiful

You only really need to plant two fruit tree saplings before the 13th of Summer for it to take the same time to complete the greenhouse as you'll still be waiting for the fall crops, like I said you only need two fruit you can use 4 non-fruit items to complete the bundle. In regard to long-term play its only really the early stages that either matter, by the time the end game comes along you likely have fruit trees and mushroom trees aplenty that the cave becomes redundant.
The thing is buying the trees costs a lot where as you can easily get One mushroom of each kind for the bundle also I am lazy that's why I prefer fruits ……

Common mushrooms can be put into the seed maker to make fall forage seeds which sell for 45g each and each mushroom will give 1-3 seeds so that's an average of 90g instead of 40g from selling the mushroom directly.
If you allow capital investments to increase the revenue, you must allow the same for fruits. So... aged wines? :) If you only get salmonberries, mushrooms still win, since 6x5g = 30g, which is less than the 45 from the seeds. But if you get blackberries, you get 20*6 = 120g, and those are the two least valuable fruits in the game, picked with no quality upgrade.
HrHaakon but then again doesn't ageing take half a year? It might just be the more valuable products that do but if it's everything then is waiting 2 full months just for 30g more than the mushrooms really worth it?
I think the batcave's big advantage is that you don't have to babysit it and check every second day, and can instead wait a whole month and then check it, basically if you are lazy batcave might be better.
I think thats how it works, i think if you wait long enough all the spaces on the floor can be filled with fruits. I guess maybe the chance of fruit spawning is dependent on the amount of empty spaces left, so as the fruit cave gets filled up more, spawning speed will be reduced. These are all just assumptions though, haven't tested anything.
Picking the mushrooms twice a month still gives more money than all the stacked fruit for the same month. The generation rate and sell price is abysmal in favor of the mushrooms.
Time in stardew valley changes based on how long you are asleep. Kegs, Preserve jars, furnaces etc. have a set amount of minutes it takes to complete a task. Every in-game hour that you are awake is 60 minutes but every in-game hour you sleep is 100 minutes. That's why the UI mod seemed off
So you ate essentially rewarded for sleeping earlier, but does this affect fruit growing time too (I'm assuming it does not because fruit specifically says "days" needed)
I like the fruit bats personally because I can forget to check it for a month and still not have lost anything. The mushrooms are pretty much better, financially and you can even make recovery potions from them. I've put a lot of hours in this game and I tend to get more forgetful and lazy. Plus it's fun to pick when it's a giant pile in there.
the thing is even with jam and wine (which takes a while) you would have to forget a lot of days to pick up the mushrooms to get to a gold value that is close between the 2..
Bats are better because they jump start your "greenhouse before winter year one" project, which is going to steamroll any profits in a single month than any profit advantage the mushies might give you. Plus as you said you can be extremely lazy about it and come back once a month.
well yeah, but you still have to go and pet your animals and check on your winery and jam buckets basically every day too, to me it just adds a tiny thing to your daily routine and it really worth it. the bats on the other hand... well let's say that i still have 200+ salmonberries and 400+ blackberries waiting to be cooked and i have 12 buckets. i don't really need their random garbage.

Crash Kojote Well I do lots of wine too, but wheat and hops grow so fast (forgot to mention my bees and honey too) that I always have room dedicated to them as well, but I definitely have lots of wine being produced, just not as much ever since Concerned Ape said fun was no longer allowed and he removed the ability to plant fruit trees in town. :(
Well theres other uses like the mushroom cave will give you all of the ingredents you need for making a life potion witch is very useful when exploring the mines! Other then the mushroom cave purple mushrooms are really hard to find!
@@fanpet3912 because that's how it used to be. This video is pretty out of date. The cave has changed quite a bit since 2017. Also, our man DF here did all these great tests of the game but, he did them with a metric fuckton of mods installed. It's hard to explain how much that royally borks the game's code in just about every way imaginable. It's simple. The mushrooms are reliable income while the fruit is a bit of a gamble. Fruit can easily give you thousands in a single day if you have the foraging perks and are lucky enough to get something like star fruit. But, you will usually get forage fruits. However, the mushrooms are guaranteed to give you 600 to 900 gold every day. Even without any of the foraging perks.
In 2023 Concerned Ape said that he would be making the mushroom caves produce every 2 days again for the 1.6 update. It hasn't come out yet as of commenting this, but this video may be, oddly, up to date in a few months
Another thing about the bat cave vs the mushroom caves, when you have level 10 in foraging (with the perk to make all forageables top quality), it does so with the fruits, but not with the mushrooms. Mushrooms will never be iridium quality in the mushroom cave, but fruits have a chance to become iridium quality.
So I'm 2 years in now. I gotta say I've found a lot more use from the bat cave in that it's helped me complete a few bundles in the community center. I've certainly found a lot of mushrooms in the cave so I'm feeling good with my choice. But monetarily speaking, I can see how you would definitely make more money with the shroom cave.
I take fruit bats not because of some huge benefits but I am forgetful so if I forget it still adds up over time where if I go to many days of forgetting mushrooms I lose out on the money from them
I originally picked bats in my save cause I thought I was gonna get some cute little fruit bats that hung around on like lattices or something but restarted and picked mushrooms once I realized how disappointingly bland the cave was Glad I did that seeing the prices worked out here lol
@@blankofwhite4379 greenhouse is FAR easier to unlock with bats so unless you went bats you most likley don't have it. Random fruit from random season without the need to plant the trees is just to convenient.
@@blankofwhite4379 you get enough to cover the various fruits needed to fix the bundles without the need for trees. you get atleast minimum 15-20 or so fruits/berries per season and they can be from any season. In spring you can get autumm/summer fruits for example....it even works mid winter when almost nothing grows ( aside winter forgage bundle and trees). This selection include ALL the fruit trees, berries ( blueberries, strawberries etc ) AND the forage bundle berries. They also give foraging exp and don't despawn if you "miss" to pick them up for a few days. Basicly the bats isn't there to give a quick profit ( like selling the mushroms every 3 days )....they are there to give you an option to get the fruits needed for bundles. Since the fruit trees cost thousands per sapling ( apple tree is 7k or so ). They also takes full seasons to grow and only give one kind of fruit so if you need 4 diffrent for bundles you need to pay roughly 20-25 thousand ingame. The bats give random fruits and berries FOR FREE allowing you to get the greenhouse operational the first winter. Which means that you not only saved 20-30k money you unlocked winter farming YEAR 1. That is the value of the batcave.
As of the update 1.4, I can harvest the mushrooms every night with 100% consistency. I usually check on them late at night but I'm sure you could check on them around 8pm, maybe a bit earlier. Additionally, all mushrooms save for the common one can be used in the recipe to make a life elixir, which I think gives you around 200 stamina and fills up your hp. What I like to do is leave a chest in the cave and store all the harvested mushrooms there, the different mushrooms make the elixir, while common mushrooms can either be used as snacks or sold for money as you'll get them in LARGE numbers.
@@veketal Yea, but if you only ever need one of a certain fruit, the high prices for a piece of fruit aren't as much of a big deal luckily. Cave carrot can be found in the mines, anyway.
I always choose bats. The money is kind of pointless because farming produces exponentially more money every harvest and you end up with limitless cash either way, especially by the time you legitimately unlock the cave you'll have a farm so big that anything you pull out of there is useless. The bat cave is very useful for filling out the community center because planting one of each type of fruit tree is expensive, time consuming, and annoying whereas the handful of mushrooms needed are easily obtained in the secret forest. Also, foraging skill increases with bat fruit and the bat fruit can always be purple quality with the perk. This not only makes it more valuable to sell, but it's useful for last minute items to add to your grange, to the potluck soup, and so on. Mushrooms just can't compete with that, especially since I tend to go Ancient fruit in the greenhouse and 2 sheds full of kegs to produce 116 ancient fruit wine every week along with iridium quality ancient wine every couple seasons. Only have to "work" on the farm one day out of the week and still make astronomical amounts of money.
Fruits in bat cave are unreliable, it's completely up to chance if they spawn or not. Fruit trees are still the best way to go about getting them, and the fruit trees themselves generate one fruit per day when in season, which returns the investments on the saplings over time and then it's only pure profit from there, meanwhile mushroom caves allow you to get easy Morel and Chanterelle that are otherwise fairly rare and season dependent. Community center is not mandatory and can be side-stepped with Joja membership. Joja is far better anyways. If you have botanist, you probably don't even care about the cave, since almost every foragable becomes an instant gold mine. Also who cares about grange display? It's useless beyond the first year once you get the stardrop and the rarecrow. As for Luau, none of the items from fruit cave can be used for the best response unless you turn them into wine and age them, which is not really an efficient method of going about it, so fruit cave isn't useful for that task either.
Fruit trees are unreliable mostly as they take a long time to grow and only produce in certain seasons and to get the ship achivement you would need to place all of them fruit bats drop them randomly but you'll have them for a long time you will want that space where you put fruit trees for other things like sheds or animals I use bats to get the greenhouse early then grow pomagranites in the greenhouse as they are the most valuable next to peaches and having the greenhouse faster makes you more money faster than just picking the mushrooms and you get the achivement faster too
I pick the fruit bats because it makes the artisan bundle much easier as i don't have to buy a bunch of saplings, thus allowing me to get the greenhouse before the first winter which becomes my main money source. Also I always forget to check the mushroom cave
I think that the real benefit from the fruit cave that the video doesn't cover, is that the mushrooms only pay off if you remember to check it regularly. For people who forget or don't want to, the fruits don't go away if you leave them. You can ignore it all month and get pretty much the same thing as you would checking daily.

Even if you wanted fruit, here's something to consider: What you _could_ do is simply use the proceeds from the Mushroom Cave to buy a sapling (buy a Pomegranate sapling!) and plant that on your farm during Spring. It will take all Summer to grow, but when Fall begins, you will have gotten another ~5k gold from Mushrooms during Summer, and now you'll get not only the 5k gold from Mushrooms, but also 28 Pomegranates as well. You can use 1 for the Artisan Bundle, and then you'll need another for the Enchanter's Bundle, which leaves you 26 of them that would sell for 3,640. That'll be a combined 23-28k for the entire year, minus the price of the Pomegranate Sapling. There's no way in frick the Bat Cave can get anywhere near that high. Sure, you gotta wait until fall to start getting Pomegranates to give to villagers, but most villagers already have Liked or Loved Gifts that are way easier to get. Haley likes the Coconuts laying around in the desert, George loves Leeks, Evelyn likes the Sweet Peas, you can brew up lots of beer for cheap for Willy, Pam, Lewis, and Shane, just to name some examples. It's not hard to find decent gifts. Lewis also likes Turnips which you can easily grow enough to last the whole year in gifts and not lose hardly any money doing it (turnip seeds are only 40g each).

I chose bats cause I though Demetrius would put Seb with the other bats and have him command them to give me fruits. Vampire boi didn't show up and I was sad.
Something to note is that within the game, there is an unlockable perk where both blackberries and salmonberries have 3 times the value. And since the bat cave drops those two the most frequently, in the long run, the bat cave is better. Of course, I also recommend not going in every day because fruit will actually stack over time and you can grab a whole lot at once.

Easy choice if you're a streamer. Who doesn't want to say "to the batcave!" in the middle of a stream, and not having to worry about it coming off as bad timing?
I mean, Consider this. The mushrooms overall, provide more money, more energy(which in turn gives more money) and can be used for the community center. Using that all that money you got from them, you can then go through and buy suitable things for people to like as gifts, and even buy the trees for which the decent fruit grow off of. The trees being more consistent, and requiring essentially 0 management, means that the tree itself, which you got from the money, off the consistent mushroom cave, is already more useful than the bat cave. Just saying.

Fruit bats are useful for unlocking the greenhouse in the first year. Getting artisan completed in the community center with animal products before the first winter is tough. Mushrooms are more consistent long term.
I know this is like 4 years old, but I wanted to say thank you. This is good data and was a good test with a concise conclusion as far as im concerned.
i picked bat cave and it actually doesnt suck. it really helps with making jam. and you just have to wait a whole month without worrying about checking it! boom. couple thousand bucks right there.
For the fruit cave (things to take note of) 1. The fruit does give you foraging exp. 2. The fruit is affected by foraging perks, giving the chance for double harvest and guranteed iridium quality. 3. The fruit tree fruit (organges, cherries, apples, etc.) are affected by the tiller profession increasing their price 10%. (Most of the fruit jumps ahead of the mushrooms in cost due to 2&3, though late game when you have high foraging & farming it probably won't matter) Ends up at personal preference really, they're both pretty good.
I always choose the bats for the fruit in the artisan bundle. I like trying to get the entire community center done in the first year and all the mushrooms are easy to get around fall time or in the mines. Most of the time by the end of the year the bats give enough varied fruit to finish the artisan bundle.
You're almost guaranteed to finish the Community Bundles (or Jojo Warehouses) faster with mushrooms. Here is how. Pick the mushrooms after 7pm. They'll show up the next day after 7pm. Every Day. Even with the level 10 foraging the bats are so unreliable on when they show up and what they drop (Hello Salmonberries). Getting 6 mushrooms every day is much more money. More money is important because the Traveling Cart is more reliable for purchasing Tree Fruit (for instant bundles) or Tree Fruit Saplings (at a discount). Also the Traveling Cart will have other things available for Bundles that are hard to find or take awhile to get. You can fish every day to get 25,000 gold by day 17, probably sooner if you're better at fishing than I am. At which point you can buy the Summer Tree Saplings and follow them up with the Fall Saplings. So yeah, the reason I mention this is because I did a minimum crop farm where I only grew enough crops for cooking ingredients, bundles, and quests. My income was 100% non crop related.
After trying both the positives found with mushrooms are cooking and cash every few days. I concluded the bat cave is far and away the one with most benefits. It nets you all the fruit to complete your greenhouse and have it your first winter. Which is massive. Accounting for the gold the greenhouse nets you in year 1 plus the money saved from buying the over 20,000 gold in saplings. Choosing the mushroom farm means waiting at the very soonest 1 full year until having a greenhouse for winter year 2. Salling trees also require 9 full tiles each space surrounding. Upon completing the bundle in the pantry requiring cherry. Pomegranate, orange and apricot you get a free wine barrel(only accessible to build at farming level 9 ) as soon as your very first spring you can begin brewing wine,beer and coffee. However this is my opinion as In the long run the choice doesn't really matter :)
Honestly, I was a mushroom guy for many playthroughs, but picking the fruit bats was really helpful for completing the community center quicker without having to wait to afford trees or for trees to grow.
I've always defaulted to mushrooms for a couple reasons. If you're consistent with checking the cave, you can have dozens of mushrooms to eat during winter, when fishing and mining activity ramps up considerably. Whatever mushrooms you don't use for Life Elixirs, you can sell or eat while mining and fishing. Also, while it does slow down Community Center progress a bit, I usually don't finish the COmmunity center until year two or three anyway, because of needing the animals and fruit and such. Even if you do acquire all the fruit you need, you still need the animal products as well.
The bats get two advantages: Tree fruit can be hard to get, beginners won't have the money to buy trees on year one and they are hardly profitable on year two. So yeah, can help with community center. Also, you have to harvest mushrooms to reset the spawn, while bats just keep dropping on ground. You can get everything they would give you just visiting them once a month, or maybe even once a year. So if you hate having to visit the cave, bats are way to go. You might actually never go to the cave and not lose much :D P.S. What is the "tree energy?" indicator that occasionally pops in bottom left corner?
DarkStorn its part of the ui info suite mod, its showing his foraging level and how long he has until it levels! it's a very helpful mod, i highly recommend it especially since it doesn't feel like cheating
The community centre is easily done after one year. Maybe one and a half. I needed one and a half cause I haven't grow crops in first year. U just can concentrate on greenhouse at first as well. After the greenhouse is done u easily can have trees growing one the brink of it. So u don't waste place for crops. Everyday a tree is growing a fruit. U still have more than the cave is bringing u sth
Missed some benefits from the bat cave. 1. You can check the cave MUCH less often (I usually check it on forage days - Saturday), so you don't need to remember to do it every other day and also save the time (very important early game). Fruit will never despawn in the cave but an occupied space decreases odds for new spawns. 2. Picking up fruit in the cave gives foraging experience so you don't need to concentrate so much on leveling up foraging in the early game, freeing up massive time for mining and fishing and offsetting any extra money from mushrooms. 3. Foraging perks apply to the fruit, so you can potentially pick up 2 fruit in one and they can all be iridium quality if you have those perks. 4. Completing the pantry bundle in early fall year 1 vs spring year 2, or not having to take time to complete it in fall year 1 using other means than fruit, will allow either for the production of 100+ starfruit in the greenhouse earlier or will allow you to not use a truffle oil, cheeses, and jelly for the bundle, which together is worth about a season of mushrooms.
Mushrooms grow after 7 (At night) and you need to pick them before the next day. Otherwise, that day will have no mushrooms. So long as you go to your mushrooms past 7 you will get them EVERY day.
DarkMelody I might have misunderstood you, but it seems like you think he's saying the mushrooms will disappear if you leave them. What he was trying to say was if you pick the mushrooms everyday after 7PM, you'll get a new set of mushrooms the next day. Meaning it's not a every other day thing.
I like mushrooms for the sake of the sweet health potion you can craft with one of each mushroom, and then eat all the common mushrooms during my cave runs
One thing I noticed is that if you choose the Bats, you get foraging experience and if you have the Botanist skill, they will always drop at the highest quality
U can find mushrooms inside the secret forest. Don't make alibi about mushroom pls. And so is alibi about fruit. You can find specific fruits in the wild. Or u just can grow it. When u choose fruit or mushroom, it is about thing that u want to accelerate in early game. Do you want to quickly finished up the fruit mission or the mushroom mission. Well.. We only need 2 mushroom for the mission tho. And u can get them easily. Red mushroom from mine and purple from wizard. And for late game, they all great for the income source. And for mushroom, it's good for health potion (well.. I'm not a type that into the fight) Some ppl says the fruits are cheap. Well.. U can manage it by turn them into jelly or wine. Place some kegs or jars inside the cave. U can complete the artisan bundle or fruit bundle on the first year with fruit bat cave. And it has a good reward.

one month is just way too short of a sample size. pls make an extreme test over one year with level 10 iridium foraging (which should apply to the fruit but not the shrooms). check both every two days as the fruits trying to spawn is not influenced by the fruit being able to spawn so you shouldnt lose any by skipping a day. thinking about it we can problably simply use math with the real values and probabilities in the code to determine which one is better
I was always really miffed that the mushroom boxes didn't have the quality boost from the iridium foraging. To me this choice is way more personal than "which is better" because it depends on your play style and what farm you have. If you have the foraging farm I think the bats are the better pick because you get mushrooms from your forage areas on the farm that work with iridium foraging and then you get the fruit on top of that. I also think this is the better duo if you want to finish the community center as fast as possible. It lets you get the artisan things and the forage things faster.
If you are that far into the game, the cave doesn't matter at all. You would probably have orange less and apple trees, and tons of mushrooms from mining. Cave wins, as it helps you way better early game, where it matters.

Fruits make better gifts but you should but fruit tries from the extra money from mushrooms instead. It really is no contest. DF's numbers were not too far off.
@Goldenrevolver : in fact, you are wrong. Mushroom can be harvested every day. Just harvested them in the evening, so the next evening, they show up. If you harvest only in the morning, you will miss the second day, as they will show up in the evening.
Started playing Stardew Valley recently, randomly picked the bats, completely forgot about it for about half a year, remembered it existed while watching this video. Time to go loot I guess
I've always chosen the bats so far. I can't complain about it. It's the perfect extension for the forest farm. Moneywise it might not be as good as the mushroom cave, but money is not a problem in Stardew Valley, and you'll forget about the cave sooner or later anyways which is a minor problem with the fruits, because they will spawn as long as there is room. So visiting the cave just once a week is totally fine when you choose fruits. And that gives you time for other stuff which will earn you more money anyways. The fruit cave also helps with the foraging levels which will increase the fruit value over time. Mushrooms won't get a bonus at all. I'd suggest to just chose the cave that fits best to your farm. The cave will only get less useful after year 1.
When it says "You've already given (them) a gift today" it's because it's tried to give them two gifts at once. This is usually because either you or they were moving at the time (similar to how if you hold down your mouse button you can harvest multiple crops at once). If you change your equipped item to not-a-gift you can see what they would have said.
The real kicker with the mushrooms, as if a more reliable and better source if energy and money wasn't enough, is that they can be used to make potions, specifically the life elixir that restores you to full health and I believe gives 250 energy as well. Very handy for the skull cavern, and spares you the trouble of farming the mines for the purple and red mushrooms and the secret forest for the chantarels or whatever the orange mushrooms are called
Morels and Chanterelle are rare and season dependent. Purple mushrooms are pretty annoying to find too. Fruits on the other hand are easy to grow and amass, since you don't have to do anything to get them besides planting a tree and waiting for it to grow.
See, it’s much better for the community center because it allows you to completely skip whatever bundle has all the fruit in it. The mushrooms used for the community center are pretty easily obtainable in the mines. You can’t get fruit tree fruit without the cave or fruit trees. Fruit trees are expensive and take a long time to get going. You also end up needing fruit for 2 or 3 other bundles, so you’re without a doubt going to need either fruit trees or the cave. How expensive the fruit trees are (in the first few years), as well as the other reasons mentioned above, means I will forever be on team batcave.
Or you can just ignore Community Center altogether and go Joja for the pure profit, so mushrooms are all around better for Joja players. Plus you're extremely unlikely to finish the bundles in the first year, so there's no issue planting the trees in the winter and collect the necessary fruits in the second year.
Oh that is easy. mushrooms. You have to go into the mines and get lucky to find them while the bats give you fruit that you can just plant trees on your farm and get. I even plant my trees in the green house so year round harvests.
The mushrooms can also be used to make the Life Elixer which doesn't give as much energy as consuming the purple, morel, and chanterelle individually but for mining jaunts it's better since it takes up only one inventory slot rather than 3. Purple mushrooms are part of the community bundles, as is the morel, red, and common mushrooms. Red and purple ones can be found deep in the mines, and common mushrooms can be found while foraging in the fall. However, morels and chanterelle are only found in small numbers in the Secret Woods. SO...by the time you reach fall you could have already grown fruit trees and had all the fruit you want consistently. Also fruit is sometimes found in the Traveling Cart. So it's not really all that hard to find it for the community bundles. I just find the mushroom cave far more predictable and sustaining. I mean once the community center's done, the odd fruits you get in the cave are pretty worthless. Want to make wine/jelly out of fruit? You are far better off just growing trees.
I lkie the fruit cave because not only does it kinda save you money for the fruit trees, but when you walk in the cave after several days, its like you find treasure!
I think if your going for money mushrooms aren't really gonna help you. It's only a $5000 difference, cool that's like half a sheep. I'm in favor of the fruit since it helps you fix the community center faster. The mushrooms are omnipotent. For lack of a better word the cave is useless.
Jaypapa 42 i would agree with you on the community center part, but as you can see from the video, it’s incredibly unreliable that fruit tree fruit even spawn. he got an orange and a cherry, neither of which are in the bundles. and $5k+ a month isn’t bad considering you earn $20k+ per year just from mushrooms? and you can put common mushrooms into a seed maker which make 1-3 fall seeds which you can sell for even more. you can use every mushroom in any of the bundles and mushrooms can only be obtainable in the deep deep mines or after you get the steel axe and the secret forest and it varies per season. you can use the mushrooms for life elixirs which are great for the skull mines. purple mushrooms are amazing food for health and energy. in conclusion, bats are good if you wanna rush community center, mushrooms are just way better in the long run
The cave is so good, especially for year 1. Mushrooms give you money, life elixirs are part of the community center. Fruit.... is pretty much only for the community center, but it still saves you thousands of gold from buying fruit trees.
Hey I realize this is years later so maybe the game got updated, or maybe it has to do with proficiency, but as soon as I unlocked the mushrooms they started showing up every single morning for me.

I will say when you reach level ten foraging and chose to get purple ( I forgot how to spell the thing) quality every time you forage you get purple quality fruit too from the cave.
The Automate mod changes a lot of things - the mushrooms are much, much better with the Automate mod, because two chests will automatically collect them every time they sprout. You'll never miss a day, and it would take centuries in-game for the chests to fill up.
Phantom MOze you'd need two chests as automate currently pulls from the 8 adjacent tiles. I heard they were working on an advanced version though, something to do with pipes, no idea when that will be out

The main benefit to the bats is you can still get a benefit if you forget about them. Mushrooms, if you forget to harvest them, will not stack in the cave. Fruit, if you forget about it, will continue to add up in the cave until you either run out of room or go harvest them.
now i'm using itemspawner to get mushroom boxes, and put them in the cave, love it :D and yes, i do that from the first day after dementrius made it a bat cave cheating? i guess, but i like it mushrooms only: community center's artisan bundle (giving keg and is for greenhouse) gonna take a while fruit only: community center's exotic bundle (is for bridge repair) gonna take longer fruit trees might be an idea, but if hit by lightning, a few days you wont get fruit, and they are expensive AND they require a certain season mines barely have mushrooms, and only red and purple, as far as i know... plus are deep in the mines and since i, myself, first take care of crops, i won't get into that section a long time i know you can change the cave anytime with a file edit (ConcernedApe explained it), but i rather have it the way thats more convenient .... plus i use the spawner for soda machine, which i'll otherwise never get, as i'll never join joja i saw a tip about using the mod that lets you move the mushroom boxes, in case you wanna change their position
Tbh lightning barely hits trees, it's very unlikely you'll see a fruit tree struck by lightning. Also greenhouse allows for year-round harvests of fruit trees
@@smaragdchaos Yikes, this is an old comment XD I still use item spawner for the mushroom boxes and make it a fruit cave, it can be nice by giving some stuff like spice berry and wild plum, which allows me to get early forage bundles done. Also peach for Robin, but since i barely get them, and if i get them, it's rarely decent quality, so i buy her some spaghetti from Gus. Too bad DF seems to no longer make SDV videos, as i want his reaction on 1.4 and soon-ish 1.5 :D Btw, since i play the game for relaxation(which i need more than ever now), i just use some funny mods, and made the better crabpots mod contain a lot of stuff that can help with community center and such.... just not much of a money source, i don't wanna make it too easy XD As for lightning: i use a mod that lets lightning only hit lightning rods, so that won't be an issue. Fruit trees do work all the time in the greenhouse, yes, but by then i may not really need em anymore, as the fruit cave gives keg early on, tbh. Fruit bats give you fruit from trees, which is useful for completing one of the community centre tasks without wasting money on trees in the early game. Mushrooms can be found in the mine, secret forest or one of the farm tipes.
I honestly just picked bats because I really like how they leave you little fruits like paying rent for the cave. I think that's pretty cute.

I picked the mushrooms and I haven't regretted it since. Mushrooms are pretty profitable, they're the reason why I completed most of the bundles in the community center. I wasted a total of 5 in- real-life hours trying to get one purple mushroom. The mushroom cave came in and saved the day.

@@sketchystudios7624 You don't save any time in completing the CC, either way, you need to wait until the fall to either get an apple or common mushroom, you can complete the artisan bundle quicker that's about it, how desperate are you for a keg? You still need to wait until the middle of fall to complete the greenhouse so it's saved you zero time overall.
And the money you make from mushrooms far out ways the money you save, 350 a month from fruit v 5000 for mushrooms, use the mushrooms to buy the saplings, you only need two saplings to complete the CC. So not only did the mushrooms make more than you saved you are left with a tree that continues to produce fruit every day. You'll get more apples in a year from a sapling that takes a month to grow and only produces fruit for a month than you will from the bat cave in an entire year.
You only need to plant 1 apple tree and 1 other fruit by the middle of summer for you to be the exact same in terms of time to complete CC bundles.

You only really need to plant two fruit tree saplings before the 13th of Summer for it to take the same time to complete the greenhouse as you'll still be waiting for the fall crops, like I said you only need two fruit you can use 4 non-fruit items to complete the bundle.
In regard to long-term play its only really the early stages that either matter, by the time the end game comes along you likely have fruit trees and mushroom trees aplenty that the cave becomes redundant.
The thing is buying the trees costs a lot where as you can easily get One mushroom of each kind for the bundle also I am lazy that's why I prefer fruits ……

Common mushrooms can be put into the seed maker to make fall forage seeds which sell for 45g each and each mushroom will give 1-3 seeds so that's an average of 90g instead of 40g from selling the mushroom directly.

If you only get salmonberries, mushrooms still win, since 6x5g = 30g, which is less than the 45 from the seeds. But if you get blackberries, you get 20*6 = 120g, and those are the two least valuable fruits in the game, picked with no quality upgrade.

I think the batcave's big advantage is that you don't have to babysit it and check every second day, and can instead wait a whole month and then check it, basically if you are lazy batcave might be better.

I think thats how it works, i think if you wait long enough all the spaces on the floor can be filled with fruits. I guess maybe the chance of fruit spawning is dependent on the amount of empty spaces left, so as the fruit cave gets filled up more, spawning speed will be reduced. These are all just assumptions though, haven't tested anything.

Picking the mushrooms twice a month still gives more money than all the stacked fruit for the same month. The generation rate and sell price is abysmal in favor of the mushrooms.
Time in stardew valley changes based on how long you are asleep. Kegs, Preserve jars, furnaces etc. have a set amount of minutes it takes to complete a task. Every in-game hour that you are awake is 60 minutes but every in-game hour you sleep is 100 minutes. That's why the UI mod seemed off

I like the fruit bats personally because I can forget to check it for a month and still not have lost anything. The mushrooms are pretty much better, financially and you can even make recovery potions from them. I've put a lot of hours in this game and I tend to get more forgetful and lazy. Plus it's fun to pick when it's a giant pile in there.
the thing is even with jam and wine (which takes a while) you would have to forget a lot of days to pick up the mushrooms to get to a gold value that is close between the 2..
Bats are better because they jump start your "greenhouse before winter year one" project, which is going to steamroll any profits in a single month than any profit advantage the mushies might give you. Plus as you said you can be extremely lazy about it and come back once a month.

well yeah, but you still have to go and pet your animals and check on your winery and jam buckets basically every day too, to me it just adds a tiny thing to your daily routine and it really worth it. the bats on the other hand... well let's say that i still have 200+ salmonberries and 400+ blackberries waiting to be cooked and i have 12 buckets. i don't really need their random garbage.

@@fanpet3912 because that's how it used to be. This video is pretty out of date. The cave has changed quite a bit since 2017. Also, our man DF here did all these great tests of the game but, he did them with a metric fuckton of mods installed. It's hard to explain how much that royally borks the game's code in just about every way imaginable. It's simple. The mushrooms are reliable income while the fruit is a bit of a gamble. Fruit can easily give you thousands in a single day if you have the foraging perks and are lucky enough to get something like star fruit. But, you will usually get forage fruits. However, the mushrooms are guaranteed to give you 600 to 900 gold every day. Even without any of the foraging perks.
In 2023 Concerned Ape said that he would be making the mushroom caves produce every 2 days again for the 1.6 update. It hasn't come out yet as of commenting this, but this video may be, oddly, up to date in a few months
Another thing about the bat cave vs the mushroom caves, when you have level 10 in foraging (with the perk to make all forageables top quality), it does so with the fruits, but not with the mushrooms. Mushrooms will never be iridium quality in the mushroom cave, but fruits have a chance to become iridium quality.

So I'm 2 years in now. I gotta say I've found a lot more use from the bat cave in that it's helped me complete a few bundles in the community center. I've certainly found a lot of mushrooms in the cave so I'm feeling good with my choice. But monetarily speaking, I can see how you would definitely make more money with the shroom cave.

@@blankofwhite4379 you get enough to cover the various fruits needed to fix the bundles without the need for trees. you get atleast minimum 15-20 or so fruits/berries per season and they can be from any season. In spring you can get autumm/summer fruits for example....it even works mid winter when almost nothing grows ( aside winter forgage bundle and trees).
This selection include ALL the fruit trees, berries ( blueberries, strawberries etc ) AND the forage bundle berries. They also give foraging exp and don't despawn if you "miss" to pick them up for a few days.
Basicly the bats isn't there to give a quick profit ( like selling the mushroms every 3 days )....they are there to give you an option to get the fruits needed for bundles. Since the fruit trees cost thousands per sapling ( apple tree is 7k or so ). They also takes full seasons to grow and only give one kind of fruit so if you need 4 diffrent for bundles you need to pay roughly 20-25 thousand ingame. The bats give random fruits and berries FOR FREE allowing you to get the greenhouse operational the first winter. Which means that you not only saved 20-30k money you unlocked winter farming YEAR 1. That is the value of the batcave.

As of the update 1.4, I can harvest the mushrooms every night with 100% consistency. I usually check on them late at night but I'm sure you could check on them around 8pm, maybe a bit earlier.
Additionally, all mushrooms save for the common one can be used in the recipe to make a life elixir, which I think gives you around 200 stamina and fills up your hp.
What I like to do is leave a chest in the cave and store all the harvested mushrooms there, the different mushrooms make the elixir, while common mushrooms can either be used as snacks or sold for money as you'll get them in LARGE numbers.
Just check the traveling merchant everyday that she is available, she sells all the fruits need it for the community center.

Mushrooms for profit/cooking, fruit bats to complete the community center quickly, that's it. Around year 2 you'll forget the cave even exists
I always choose bats. The money is kind of pointless because farming produces exponentially more money every harvest and you end up with limitless cash either way, especially by the time you legitimately unlock the cave you'll have a farm so big that anything you pull out of there is useless.
The bat cave is very useful for filling out the community center because planting one of each type of fruit tree is expensive, time consuming, and annoying whereas the handful of mushrooms needed are easily obtained in the secret forest.
Also, foraging skill increases with bat fruit and the bat fruit can always be purple quality with the perk. This not only makes it more valuable to sell, but it's useful for last minute items to add to your grange, to the potluck soup, and so on.
Mushrooms just can't compete with that, especially since I tend to go Ancient fruit in the greenhouse and 2 sheds full of kegs to produce 116 ancient fruit wine every week along with iridium quality ancient wine every couple seasons. Only have to "work" on the farm one day out of the week and still make astronomical amounts of money.

Fruits in bat cave are unreliable, it's completely up to chance if they spawn or not. Fruit trees are still the best way to go about getting them, and the fruit trees themselves generate one fruit per day when in season, which returns the investments on the saplings over time and then it's only pure profit from there, meanwhile mushroom caves allow you to get easy Morel and Chanterelle that are otherwise fairly rare and season dependent.
Community center is not mandatory and can be side-stepped with Joja membership. Joja is far better anyways.
If you have botanist, you probably don't even care about the cave, since almost every foragable becomes an instant gold mine. Also who cares about grange display? It's useless beyond the first year once you get the stardrop and the rarecrow. As for Luau, none of the items from fruit cave can be used for the best response unless you turn them into wine and age them, which is not really an efficient method of going about it, so fruit cave isn't useful for that task either.
Fruit trees are unreliable mostly as they take a long time to grow and only produce in certain seasons and to get the ship achivement you would need to place all of them fruit bats drop them randomly but you'll have them for a long time you will want that space where you put fruit trees for other things like sheds or animals I use bats to get the greenhouse early then grow pomagranites in the greenhouse as they are the most valuable next to peaches and having the greenhouse faster makes you more money faster than just picking the mushrooms and you get the achivement faster too

I think that the real benefit from the fruit cave that the video doesn't cover, is that the mushrooms only pay off if you remember to check it regularly. For people who forget or don't want to, the fruits don't go away if you leave them. You can ignore it all month and get pretty much the same thing as you would checking daily.

I swear dude each time I come here to watch some guides and tips and end up laughing myself to death.
Even if you wanted fruit, here's something to consider: What you _could_ do is simply use the proceeds from the Mushroom Cave to buy a sapling (buy a Pomegranate sapling!) and plant that on your farm during Spring. It will take all Summer to grow, but when Fall begins, you will have gotten another ~5k gold from Mushrooms during Summer, and now you'll get not only the 5k gold from Mushrooms, but also 28 Pomegranates as well. You can use 1 for the Artisan Bundle, and then you'll need another for the Enchanter's Bundle, which leaves you 26 of them that would sell for 3,640. That'll be a combined 23-28k for the entire year, minus the price of the Pomegranate Sapling. There's no way in frick the Bat Cave can get anywhere near that high. Sure, you gotta wait until fall to start getting Pomegranates to give to villagers, but most villagers already have Liked or Loved Gifts that are way easier to get. Haley likes the Coconuts laying around in the desert, George loves Leeks, Evelyn likes the Sweet Peas, you can brew up lots of beer for cheap for Willy, Pam, Lewis, and Shane, just to name some examples. It's not hard to find decent gifts. Lewis also likes Turnips which you can easily grow enough to last the whole year in gifts and not lose hardly any money doing it (turnip seeds are only 40g each).

1 Orange
2 Cherries
2 Spiceberries
1 Pomegranate
2 Peaches
1 Salmonberry

I chose bats cause I though Demetrius would put Seb with the other bats and have him command them to give me fruits. Vampire boi didn't show up and I was sad.
Something to note is that within the game, there is an unlockable perk where both blackberries and salmonberries have 3 times the value. And since the bat cave drops those two the most frequently, in the long run, the bat cave is better. Of course, I also recommend not going in every day because fruit will actually stack over time and you can grab a whole lot at once.
I always pick bats because it helps me get the greenhouse faster. Then I can fill it with ancient fruit, turn it into wine, and make a ton of $$$ sooner

Who doesn't want to say "to the batcave!" in the middle of a stream, and not having to worry about it coming off as bad timing?
I mean, Consider this. The mushrooms overall, provide more money, more energy(which in turn gives more money) and can be used for the community center. Using that all that money you got from them, you can then go through and buy suitable things for people to like as gifts, and even buy the trees for which the decent fruit grow off of. The trees being more consistent, and requiring essentially 0 management, means that the tree itself, which you got from the money, off the consistent mushroom cave, is already more useful than the bat cave. Just saying.

Fruit bats are useful for unlocking the greenhouse in the first year. Getting artisan completed in the community center with animal products before the first winter is tough. Mushrooms are more consistent long term.

Yeah, no doubt go shrooms. If you need fruit, plant fruit trees. Far more reliable and lucrative method of getting both.
Picked bats purely for the community center because I have no plan of growing trees. And sometimes gifts.
i picked bat cave and it actually doesnt suck. it really helps with making jam. and you just have to wait a whole month without worrying about checking it! boom. couple thousand bucks right there.
For the fruit cave (things to take note of)
1. The fruit does give you foraging exp.
2. The fruit is affected by foraging perks, giving the chance for double harvest and guranteed iridium quality.
3. The fruit tree fruit (organges, cherries, apples, etc.) are affected by the tiller profession increasing their price 10%.
(Most of the fruit jumps ahead of the mushrooms in cost due to 2&3, though late game when you have high foraging & farming it probably won't matter)
Ends up at personal preference really, they're both pretty good.
I always choose the bats for the fruit in the artisan bundle. I like trying to get the entire community center done in the first year and all the mushrooms are easy to get around fall time or in the mines. Most of the time by the end of the year the bats give enough varied fruit to finish the artisan bundle.

You're almost guaranteed to finish the Community Bundles (or Jojo Warehouses) faster with mushrooms. Here is how. Pick the mushrooms after 7pm. They'll show up the next day after 7pm. Every Day. Even with the level 10 foraging the bats are so unreliable on when they show up and what they drop (Hello Salmonberries). Getting 6 mushrooms every day is much more money. More money is important because the Traveling Cart is more reliable for purchasing Tree Fruit (for instant bundles) or Tree Fruit Saplings (at a discount). Also the Traveling Cart will have other things available for Bundles that are hard to find or take awhile to get. You can fish every day to get 25,000 gold by day 17, probably sooner if you're better at fishing than I am. At which point you can buy the Summer Tree Saplings and follow them up with the Fall Saplings. So yeah, the reason I mention this is because I did a minimum crop farm where I only grew enough crops for cooking ingredients, bundles, and quests. My income was 100% non crop related.
After trying both the positives found with mushrooms are cooking and cash every few days. I concluded the bat cave is far and away the one with most benefits. It nets you all the fruit to complete your greenhouse and have it your first winter. Which is massive. Accounting for the gold the greenhouse nets you in year 1 plus the money saved from buying the over 20,000 gold in saplings. Choosing the mushroom farm means waiting at the very soonest 1 full year until having a greenhouse for winter year 2. Salling trees also require 9 full tiles each space surrounding. Upon completing the bundle in the pantry requiring cherry. Pomegranate, orange and apricot you get a free wine barrel(only accessible to build at farming level 9 ) as soon as your very first spring you can begin brewing wine,beer and coffee.
However this is my opinion as In the long run the choice doesn't really matter :)

Honestly, I was a mushroom guy for many playthroughs, but picking the fruit bats was really helpful for completing the community center quicker without having to wait to afford trees or for trees to grow.

I've always defaulted to mushrooms for a couple reasons. If you're consistent with checking the cave, you can have dozens of mushrooms to eat during winter, when fishing and mining activity ramps up considerably. Whatever mushrooms you don't use for Life Elixirs, you can sell or eat while mining and fishing.
Also, while it does slow down Community Center progress a bit, I usually don't finish the COmmunity center until year two or three anyway, because of needing the animals and fruit and such. Even if you do acquire all the fruit you need, you still need the animal products as well.
The bats get two advantages:
Tree fruit can be hard to get, beginners won't have the money to buy trees on year one and they are hardly profitable on year two. So yeah, can help with community center.
Also, you have to harvest mushrooms to reset the spawn, while bats just keep dropping on ground. You can get everything they would give you just visiting them once a month, or maybe even once a year. So if you hate having to visit the cave, bats are way to go.
You might actually never go to the cave and not lose much :D
P.S. What is the "tree energy?" indicator that occasionally pops in bottom left corner?
DarkStorn its part of the ui info suite mod, its showing his foraging level and how long he has until it levels! it's a very helpful mod, i highly recommend it especially since it doesn't feel like cheating
The community centre is easily done after one year. Maybe one and a half. I needed one and a half cause I haven't grow crops in first year. U just can concentrate on greenhouse at first as well. After the greenhouse is done u easily can have trees growing one the brink of it. So u don't waste place for crops. Everyday a tree is growing a fruit. U still have more than the cave is bringing u sth

Community Center is optional anyways. For players who go Joja, mushrooms are indisputably much better in every possible way.
Missed some benefits from the bat cave.
1. You can check the cave MUCH less often (I usually check it on forage days - Saturday), so you don't need to remember to do it every other day and also save the time (very important early game). Fruit will never despawn in the cave but an occupied space decreases odds for new spawns.
2. Picking up fruit in the cave gives foraging experience so you don't need to concentrate so much on leveling up foraging in the early game, freeing up massive time for mining and fishing and offsetting any extra money from mushrooms.
3. Foraging perks apply to the fruit, so you can potentially pick up 2 fruit in one and they can all be iridium quality if you have those perks.
4. Completing the pantry bundle in early fall year 1 vs spring year 2, or not having to take time to complete it in fall year 1 using other means than fruit, will allow either for the production of 100+ starfruit in the greenhouse earlier or will allow you to not use a truffle oil, cheeses, and jelly for the bundle, which together is worth about a season of mushrooms.
Mushrooms grow after 7 (At night) and you need to pick them before the next day. Otherwise, that day will have no mushrooms. So long as you go to your mushrooms past 7 you will get them EVERY day.

What he was trying to say was if you pick the mushrooms everyday after 7PM, you'll get a new set of mushrooms the next day. Meaning it's not a every other day thing.

I like mushrooms for the sake of the sweet health potion you can craft with one of each mushroom, and then eat all the common mushrooms during my cave runs
One thing I noticed is that if you choose the Bats, you get foraging experience and if you have the Botanist skill, they will always drop at the highest quality

When u choose fruit or mushroom, it is about thing that u want to accelerate in early game. Do you want to quickly finished up the fruit mission or the mushroom mission. Well.. We only need 2 mushroom for the mission tho. And u can get them easily. Red mushroom from mine and purple from wizard.
And for late game, they all great for the income source. And for mushroom, it's good for health potion (well.. I'm not a type that into the fight)
Some ppl says the fruits are cheap. Well.. U can manage it by turn them into jelly or wine. Place some kegs or jars inside the cave.
U can complete the artisan bundle or fruit bundle on the first year with fruit bat cave. And it has a good reward.
Good luck getting red cabbage in the first year. Also using cheap fruits for kegs or jars is a waste of kegs/jars.

one month is just way too short of a sample size. pls make an extreme test over one year with level 10 iridium foraging (which should apply to the fruit but not the shrooms). check both every two days as the fruits trying to spawn is not influenced by the fruit being able to spawn so you shouldnt lose any by skipping a day. thinking about it we can problably simply use math with the real values and probabilities in the code to determine which one is better
I was always really miffed that the mushroom boxes didn't have the quality boost from the iridium foraging. To me this choice is way more personal than "which is better" because it depends on your play style and what farm you have. If you have the foraging farm I think the bats are the better pick because you get mushrooms from your forage areas on the farm that work with iridium foraging and then you get the fruit on top of that. I also think this is the better duo if you want to finish the community center as fast as possible. It lets you get the artisan things and the forage things faster.

If you are that far into the game, the cave doesn't matter at all. You would probably have orange less and apple trees, and tons of mushrooms from mining.
Cave wins, as it helps you way better early game, where it matters.

My experience, mushrooms are about 5x better money, energy, and hp than fruit. Fruits make better gifts but you should but fruit tries from the extra money from mushrooms instead. It really is no contest. DF's numbers were not too far off.
@Goldenrevolver : in fact, you are wrong. Mushroom can be harvested every day. Just harvested them in the evening, so the next evening, they show up. If you harvest only in the morning, you will miss the second day, as they will show up in the evening.
Started playing Stardew Valley recently, randomly picked the bats, completely forgot about it for about half a year, remembered it existed while watching this video. Time to go loot I guess
I've always chosen the bats so far. I can't complain about it. It's the perfect extension for the forest farm.
Moneywise it might not be as good as the mushroom cave, but money is not a problem in Stardew Valley, and you'll forget about the cave sooner or later anyways which is a minor problem with the fruits, because they will spawn as long as there is room. So visiting the cave just once a week is totally fine when you choose fruits. And that gives you time for other stuff which will earn you more money anyways.
The fruit cave also helps with the foraging levels which will increase the fruit value over time. Mushrooms won't get a bonus at all.
I'd suggest to just chose the cave that fits best to your farm. The cave will only get less useful after year 1.
When it says "You've already given (them) a gift today" it's because it's tried to give them two gifts at once. This is usually because either you or they were moving at the time (similar to how if you hold down your mouse button you can harvest multiple crops at once). If you change your equipped item to not-a-gift you can see what they would have said.

The real kicker with the mushrooms, as if a more reliable and better source if energy and money wasn't enough, is that they can be used to make potions, specifically the life elixir that restores you to full health and I believe gives 250 energy as well. Very handy for the skull cavern, and spares you the trouble of farming the mines for the purple and red mushrooms and the secret forest for the chantarels or whatever the orange mushrooms are called
I check my bat cave once every two weeks and love it! So many fruit!
Leah, Linus and Harvey like the common mushrooms and chanterelles. The wizard loves the purple mushrooms. an easy way to get their friendship up!

Morels and Chanterelle are rare and season dependent. Purple mushrooms are pretty annoying to find too. Fruits on the other hand are easy to grow and amass, since you don't have to do anything to get them besides planting a tree and waiting for it to grow.
Bats are so much better because, like chickens, you can just ignore them for a month and go reap your rewards. ALSO, BOTANIST.

See, it’s much better for the community center because it allows you to completely skip whatever bundle has all the fruit in it. The mushrooms used for the community center are pretty easily obtainable in the mines. You can’t get fruit tree fruit without the cave or fruit trees. Fruit trees are expensive and take a long time to get going. You also end up needing fruit for 2 or 3 other bundles, so you’re without a doubt going to need either fruit trees or the cave. How expensive the fruit trees are (in the first few years), as well as the other reasons mentioned above, means I will forever be on team batcave.
Or you can just ignore Community Center altogether and go Joja for the pure profit, so mushrooms are all around better for Joja players. Plus you're extremely unlikely to finish the bundles in the first year, so there's no issue planting the trees in the winter and collect the necessary fruits in the second year.
Oh that is easy. mushrooms. You have to go into the mines and get lucky to find them while the bats give you fruit that you can just plant trees on your farm and get. I even plant my trees in the green house so year round harvests.

The mushrooms can also be used to make the Life Elixer which doesn't give as much energy as consuming the purple, morel, and chanterelle individually but for mining jaunts it's better since it takes up only one inventory slot rather than 3. Purple mushrooms are part of the community bundles, as is the morel, red, and common mushrooms. Red and purple ones can be found deep in the mines, and common mushrooms can be found while foraging in the fall. However, morels and chanterelle are only found in small numbers in the Secret Woods. SO...by the time you reach fall you could have already grown fruit trees and had all the fruit you want consistently. Also fruit is sometimes found in the Traveling Cart. So it's not really all that hard to find it for the community bundles. I just find the mushroom cave far more predictable and sustaining. I mean once the community center's done, the odd fruits you get in the cave are pretty worthless. Want to make wine/jelly out of fruit? You are far better off just growing trees.

Jaypapa 42 i would agree with you on the community center part, but as you can see from the video, it’s incredibly unreliable that fruit tree fruit even spawn. he got an orange and a cherry, neither of which are in the bundles. and $5k+ a month isn’t bad considering you earn $20k+ per year just from mushrooms? and you can put common mushrooms into a seed maker which make 1-3 fall seeds which you can sell for even more. you can use every mushroom in any of the bundles and mushrooms can only be obtainable in the deep deep mines or after you get the steel axe and the secret forest and it varies per season. you can use the mushrooms for life elixirs which are great for the skull mines. purple mushrooms are amazing food for health and energy.
in conclusion, bats are good if you wanna rush community center, mushrooms are just way better in the long run

The cave is so good, especially for year 1. Mushrooms give you money, life elixirs are part of the community center. Fruit.... is pretty much only for the community center, but it still saves you thousands of gold from buying fruit trees.
Hey I realize this is years later so maybe the game got updated, or maybe it has to do with proficiency, but as soon as I unlocked the mushrooms they started showing up every single morning for me.
Think bats are for bundle speedrunning or something, especially since you don't have to spend an early fortune on fruit trees. I think my emily wanted an apricot for a year

I will say when you reach level ten foraging and chose to get purple ( I forgot how to spell the thing) quality every time you forage you get purple quality fruit too from the cave.
The Automate mod changes a lot of things - the mushrooms are much, much better with the Automate mod, because two chests will automatically collect them every time they sprout. You'll never miss a day, and it would take centuries in-game for the chests to fill up.

1 hour of waiting counts as 60 minutes during playtime but 100 minutes while asleep for different processes in the game
The main benefit to the bats is you can still get a benefit if you forget about them. Mushrooms, if you forget to harvest them, will not stack in the cave. Fruit, if you forget about it, will continue to add up in the cave until you either run out of room or go harvest them.

now i'm using itemspawner to get mushroom boxes, and put them in the cave, love it :D

mines barely have mushrooms, and only red and purple, as far as i know... plus are deep in the mines
and since i, myself, first take care of crops, i won't get into that section a long time
i know you can change the cave anytime with a file edit (ConcernedApe explained it), but i rather have it the way thats more convenient

Tbh lightning barely hits trees, it's very unlikely you'll see a fruit tree struck by lightning. Also greenhouse allows for year-round harvests of fruit trees

I still use item spawner for the mushroom boxes and make it a fruit cave, it can be nice by giving some stuff like spice berry and wild plum, which allows me to get early forage bundles done.
Also peach for Robin, but since i barely get them, and if i get them, it's rarely decent quality, so i buy her some spaghetti from Gus.
Too bad DF seems to no longer make SDV videos, as i want his reaction on 1.4 and soon-ish 1.5 :D
Btw, since i play the game for relaxation(which i need more than ever now), i just use some funny mods, and made the better crabpots mod contain a lot of stuff that can help with community center and such.... just not much of a money source, i don't wanna make it too easy XD
As for lightning: i use a mod that lets lightning only hit lightning rods, so that won't be an issue.
Fruit trees do work all the time in the greenhouse, yes, but by then i may not really need em anymore, as the fruit cave gives keg early on, tbh.
I do still put all fruit trees in the greenhouse, just for fun! 9also have vewwy big gweenhouse XD

Fruit bats give you fruit from trees, which is useful for completing one of the community centre tasks without wasting money on trees in the early game. Mushrooms can be found in the mine, secret forest or one of the farm tipes.
