- One full year of collecting garbage! Then another year at max luck to see the difference.. People had been asking me for a long time to do this, so here it is! Made much easier by the Automate mod.. Stardew Valley gameplay with my commentary as always.

@@marblebongos2794 what is so sad about it? A man is clearly complete psycho. Who in the hell would give a girl a solid gold bar? What she would do with it? Wear it to Caroline aerobic class? And even if she decided to sell it for money she only can sell it back to Clint(which is nuts - selling a gift to a person who give it to you in the first place).
No wonder this stuff is found in the trash bins. Clint is probably such a talented blacksmith that he cant make anything out of gold, but hey the man can make some bars, alright.

There's a trash can by joja too btw. On my first day playing, i found a gold bar in it. I've also found diamonds in grannys trash.
You could probably put recycle machines by all of those chests to process the trash items for a bit more value, too.

We have to give credits to the creator, he all by himself created this amazing game, and receives a lot of money by creating it

Hey DF! Here’s something interesting you can try!
So at one point during a play through, I needed extra money, so I went to Pierre’s and sold a bunch of stuff (like bread from the trash can, holly, sap, etc.). The next day or so, I saw that he had the items I sold to him on sale. Within a day, a couple items were gone, presumably purchased by an NPC. I talked with Shane a day or so later, and he said something like “I bought bread from Pierre the other day. It was foul! No wonder he was selling it for so cheap!”. I haven’t been able to experiment with this much, but I just wonder what else the NPCs say depending on what you sell?

Most of all the trash above was worth zero. Going to see if i can find the rates of how the trash and newspaper break down on average, but glasses and CDs break down into 1 refined quartz each guaranteed. So that’s 25 year 1 and 22 for year 2, they sell for 50 gold each, so that is 1250 and 1100 respectively. But they are better for crafting than selling. Will try and see if i can approximate a value for the other 2.
Edit: the trash will be incredibly hard to estimate and average, but newspapers have a 90/10 split for torch/cloth. I would estimate that year 1 would more likely produce 2 cloth, and year 2 would likely produce 1. Not entirely accurate, since RNG, but more than likely on average, these will be your results: 45 torchs and 2 cloth year 1, for 225+940 for a total of 1165 gold, year 2 would be 33 torches and 1 cloth for 165+470 for 635 gold. Thats an estimate, you could technically get 17 cloth year 1 and 0 cloth year 2. It’s RNG. But these are rough estimates to go off of.
Edit #2: so i painstakingly collected 100 trash (i refuse to gather 1000, i could cheat but for this? No. Plus can’t cheat recycling machines on console) breaking down the 100 trash i got 112 stone, and 41 each or iron and coal, showing that they average about the same, and the total profit from straight selling all of that would be 1,249, divide by 100 and round it a bit, about 12.5 gold per trash on average. So with that in mind i calculated for year 1 the trash was worth approximately 175 gold and year 2 would be approximately 238 gold (can’t earn half golds)
So in total, past the two edits, year 1 was worth a total of approximately 2,590 gold, while year 2 was approximately 1,973 gold, about 600 less if it follows the trends i have found. Was this worth exploring so deeply? HELL NO! Kids, learn from my mistakes, do not try and go above and beyond over stupid garbage, literally!
On year two the total trash was 77, not 87.

In version 1.4, they added an 8th can near the JojaMart, and along with normal finds, you might (if you've built the theatre) get corn or a movie ticket.
Recycling would've earned another 2200-2500 per year, more with the rancher/artisan skills (for the cloth)
Just a side note, some specific milestones will impact what you can get out of the Pam Cans, mostly stuff like getting to a specific floor in the mines.
I love how your vids are made to be funny but they actually are well explained and you're giving tips etc, very interesting as usual ^_^
I feel like a broken record but with the chests everywhere mod you can empty your backpack into the shipping bin from anywhere so you don't need to keep going back and forth to your farm to gather more stuff.
I am just now watching these, and I think the same thing pretty much every single video. Chests anywhere would be especially good for this one, since you could check all the chests from the comfort of your bed too.

This is one of the best ideas! I use Automate on my farm and didn't think to do this at all. I would add a recycling machine to each set up to convert the trash and newspapers to materials.
you really dont seem to understand the value of trash. selling as is means they are worth 0, but the most common return from a recycling machine is refined quartz, which is worth substantially more, and saves the valuable coal for ores while still giving you a steady flow of materials needed for items like sprinklers. i believe the full set of items you can get back is wood, coal, torches, refined quartz, and cloth, all of which is either some nice free value from bad fishing days and garbage checking, or valuable resources for crafting. the item return does depend on the trash that you put in, though...

I believe you missed the trash can outside Joja Mart on this test. That may shoot the total value up a little bit, though I doubt it'll be that much more. Still very cool video and definitely shows the value of always checking the trash.

Hey DF!! So I’ve commented this on a few videos before and I’m not sure if you’ve seen it so I’m just going to again because why not. Anyways I’ve seen people talk about this weird thing that Demetrius does during summer where he hides behind one of the bushes near the fountain and the playground and when you see him he has a “...” or “?” dialogue bubble over his head. Anyways I think this would make for a very interesting video because I don’t think many people know about it. Also great video as always!!

That's him trying to walk through the bush, for whatever reason it's part of his route. That kind of bubble over an NPC's head is the same one they get when someone or something blocks their path in a way that stops them.

After the player reaches level 40/80 in the mines and After the player receives the furnace blueprints from Clint you get more stuf
The recycler thing is very useful, you can get Iron ore and stone from trash, refined quartz from broken glasses and discs, cloth, coal, and torches from soggy newspapers and driftwood, all for just 1 iron, some wood, and some stone!

The trash you find gets progressively more valuable as you progress in the game, certain milestones unlock more items in the trashcans. So, not quiterepresentative and far from maximum value/year, not to mention the autmatable recycling you didn't do. Will try out that mod though, sounds amazing.
There is a garbage can near Jojamart. Making 8 cans in total. Is just east of jojamart, above the minecart.

The automation mod is definitely a must have, one of the best there is.
I never thought to check the trash cans until I saw some of your videos. I always only ever found nothing or trash so I gave up checking them early on. Based on the amount of stuff you found my rough estimate is about something every 3-4 days from each can.
I looked up "dangerously funny trash cans for a year" so I could watch this.

I have a theory about that iron and copper bars that does not ruins the ship of Clint and Emily:
Clint gave Emily that bars, she was like "cool i will keep it" but then Haley with 0 hearts found the bars and threw them out.

Once I found a largemouth bass in a trash can and I was trash at fishing so I needed one for Jodi's quest. I was happy.

Ok so one time I found a puffer fish in mayor Lewis trash can that was like 2000 gold. So it's definitely worth checking out.

I used the automate mode to connect all the trash cans in town to a single chest+recycling machine. Just gotta check on it every week or so.
I didn't know the paths could act as connections that's cool. So would it be plausible to set up stone paths all over to have the trash filter into one chest? Or does it have to be one chest per can pretty much?
