I'm partial towards older lenses which are a bit more 'imperfect'. I really like using the Zeiss Standard Speeds (T2.1) - I actually prefer their look to the Super Speeds and, as they're not as popular as the Super Speeds, I can often get a good deal from them at the rental house, as they're often sitting around unused. (Example of something I shot with the Standard Speeds: ruclips.net/video/nYErREuhX_E/видео.html ) For documentary work I own a set of old Nikkor still lenses which I shoot on (and adapt to an EF mount). I way prefer them over sharper modern stills lenses/low cost cine lenses (especially when shooting 4K) as the newer lenses are a bit too sharp and perfect across the entire image for my liking. I also love the look of the Panchros (spherical), the DNAs (large format) and the Panavision C-Series (anamorphic) - although all of these sets are out of the low budget range I usually work in haha.
@@InDepthCine I’ve heard the old Nikkor lenses have an amazing look that is to be desired! I actually own the SMC Takumar 50mm F1.4 and a rare SMC Takumar 24mm 3.5, I also own the Helios 44-2 but I don’t use it as much on my pocket 4K
I'm mostly skeptical when it comes to cinematography RUclips videos but seeing a Tsai Ming Liang film used as an example completely won me over. You know what the good stuff is!
Can’t wait for your next cinema Len’s video. Thank you

Great second part Gray! One thing that would have been worth mentioning is that DNA lenses have in fact very little to do with ARRI. They are manufactured by ARRI Rental and they can be only rented through them, just like the Alexa 65. Also they are very sought after, since there's only so many sets available.
SO WELL RESEARCHED!! thank you so, so much again for this valuable, practical knowledge reference! Very interesting to finally know more about how the K35s and Speed Panchros came to be and how different vintage lens series compare to each other.
Wow! What a treat! So refreshing that you are sharing this info/experience and taking time to illustrate the characteristics of THESE lenses with thoughtful attention to actionable details. Thank you so much Gray!!
This was a great pt.2! Would love to see a part 3 with some of the lenses others have mentioned, and maybe even the Blackwing7 because I would love to hear your thoughts on those. Thank you!
can't wait for you to review the arri signature prime. in my humble opinion, it's the new era of cinema lens, it is so optically perfect and that in fact it's characteristics.
Am interested in looks in film on the front end with lenses and lighting more than color grading. Probably even more important now with HDR to get close to a desired look before post. Heavy color grading is technically destructive to the image. Maximum information is actually at the moment of capture.
Nice! Thanks a lot for your insights about working with those lenses! I'd love hear your story about how you got into the film industry and how you started on working as a camera assistant. I live in Austria and find it very hard to get into the industry...
Loved the video, very informative! But you just can't talk about the Zeiss Master Primes without showing clips from Blade Runner 2049 lol. The full potential of those lenses was reached in arguably one of the best-looking films ever made!
Would love to see a video comparing some of these lenses to their lower budget counterparts. For example I'm considering a Helios 44-2 for a different look opposed to my Sony G Masters.
Very good video!!! Incredibly informative and so awesome that you use real life cinema examples, with camera used and everything, instead of just recording some footage in a park as many youtubers do. Awesome job
its so great to hear you talk about the lenses. its a cartesian / artistic vision.... clear, simple, with really good movies example , congrats...thanks so much its very helpful. I just finish a project with Tood AO's... do you talk about them?
TLS are the only versions of the Speed Panchros imo. I tried prepping out a build with the P+S rehousings once and there was no way to get two motors and a matte box on it no matter what I tried
Merry Christmas man! And damn, I don’t normally wanna call tech “sexy”, but those DNA lenses are gorgeous haha. Wish me luck today, I might go on a shoot with some friends and we’re using the Moment anamorphic lens on our phones lol, and I’m definitely showing them some of your vids for ideas ;) Great vid as usual m8 :)
@@InDepthCine thanks man. Btw you ever thought of doing a video specifically on cameras? I don’t think I’ve ever heard justification for why certain cameras are chosen for shoots, I’d love to understand those decisions too :)
Great content as always! I cannot wait until the follow up! Can I offer a suggestion: it would be great if the frames from each film that you show was labelled with the title of the movie, I often recognise some frames and not others. Have a great new year!
Could there be a video about the pros and cons of different mounting of lenses to film cameras? Maybe this is more of an amateur film question but I am curious
The facts on the Arri Rental DNA glass isn't quite accurate. They are not manufactured at all by ARRI Inc but rather by Arri Rental. Also in the entire series there is very little Hasselblad designed, Zeiss manufactured glass.
Panchro lenses have tons of distortion, lack of sharpness, low contrast, blur the edges and are unable to deliver a straight line. These are defects in an optical design. Do you want to find these defects without paying too much? Buy old M-42 photographic lenses and adapters for your cameras.
What vintage glass did they use to make the full frame DNA Arri primes? I though I heard at least one of them is an Olympus OM Also which series / version of the Hassleblad glass did they use in the 65 DNA primes? I wish Arri would just make a list
Hi IDC, I've been watching your videos for a while now and I have learned so much thanks to you. I was wondering if you could help me with selecting a camera as I am a beginning filmmaker and I don't want to buy one impulsively.I have looked around the internet but I really value your opinion more as you have a great experience and understanding of the technicality of filmmaking. If you have the time could you maybe give me a name for a camera that you think would suit my situation or maybe one that you liked to work with as a film student? I've seen some people film with phones as well, and using a lens on the camera to have a better image, is that also a good option? I have a 1500$ budget which is all I have, might sound stupid but you gotta start somewhere haha
Hi! How are you? - The year 2020 is coming to an end when everyone had a hard time. Good job. I hope the infectious disease will be resolved in the new year and everyone will be healthy and happy. Thank you. Happy New Year. ^O^
Hi Gray, great video. I would be hugely interested in hearing about your career as an AC, I am hoping to start work as a trainee and work my way up to 2nd/1st AC one day. Hope you had a good Christmas :)
This is literally the kind of youtube acct I've been searching for for years
i love whatever cameras and lenses they used back in the late 80s in big movies, they were not high def or anything but had a quality of their own
As a DP who doesn't get access to LOADS of different lenses I love these videos. Thank you!
This was great again Gray! Would love to see a part 3. Also, do you have a set of favorite lenses?

I would love to see a video including some super 16mm lenses. There are movies shot with them and there's not much info about them...
I would absolutely love this!
I would love it too.
Did you know that the Cosmicar/Pentax or Computar/Kowa 75mm lenses in C mount, will cover the APS sensor? F/1.4 or 1.3
Dude I love you Chanel so much! I literally watch it every night to fall asleep
The DNAs look so fucking good
For part 3, I hope to see more Anamorphic Primes, most notably the Panavision Primo Anamorphic Primes & E-Series Anamorphic Primes
Absolutely would love to see a part 3!! Grateful for filmmakers like you making information like these accessible.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. It’s very useful.
The images that he tooks from the films couldn't be better. Amazing job in the 3 parts mate!
So good! Mr Turner is such a gorgeous film.

Haha that image of the Angenieux attached to the Sony camera xD
The Arri DNA is gorgeous!
These are some of my favorite videos on youtube right now. I’d love to see more!
I would love to see a video that sheds light on super 16mm lenses.
The Arri DNA has such a pleasing rendering
Gosh! Those Arri DNAs’ look amazing as do the Canons and Syn-Panchros…lovely piece and very informative…..delicious image selection too!
Would love to see a part 2! Very informative videos!
Excellent video. I'd say another great example for the Prime DNA lenses would easily be Parasite. Astonishingly sharp and wide.
Come on... you know we need a part 3! 👏
I love this contend, as a lens tech for a cine rental company I applaud you for your effort.
this is very helpful - love the style. thank you!

Deakins sure does love Master Primes.
In one of the "Turning Tables" episodes of The Deakins' Podcast somebody asks them how they make MPs look so good and Roger straight up gets offended
@@herzogseth3506 do you have a link to that conversation?

Thank you and continue with this incredible work! Greetings from Brazil.

Wonderful video man! Love learning through your breakdowns
These are so great, man. Keep 'em comin' I say!
Thank you for this series, dude
Thanks for this, such a useful knowledge for beginners filmmakers like me😍
thank you for such an amazing content as always! Can't thank you enough for sharing it with us
Amazing. Thank you for doing Part 2!!
Could you do this series for more budget lenses? Would be incredibly useful.
Great, the first thing I thought when watching your previous video was “I wonder how common the K35 is”
So the Arri DNA are all rehoused Zeiss?
great content! can't wait for part 3!
This series is great! thanks, give us more !
Nice video!! Did you already worked with the Arri Alexa signature Prime? Keep it up 👍🏻
I actually haven't worked with the Signature Primes yet unfortunately. Hopefully a job will come up with them in the future!

Again, thanks for your videos
Thank you for these videos! Keep up the good work!
Please make a special video about Panavision C Series only.

Part 3 please! jaja Thanks!!
