I always love working with them and checking out the serial numbers. Often they'll be really low (like C50-5 or something) which means it's the 5th 50mm C-Series lens ever made. Would love to know where those lenses have been and what they've seen over the years.
Helpful as always! A channel like this where the creator actually knows what they're talking about AND states it straightforwardly and without pretense is a breath of fresh air. Keep it up!
Indie filmmaker who has been doing docs and short docs and the like for 10 years now. Mostly self taught so now that I've got my editing, shooting and other stuff down I'm learning more about lighting, lenses and technique. That being said I feel you have 1 of the best channels on the platform. Now a patron. Keep it up brother.
Cooke has been my fav. The iconic Cooke Look. Columbus 2017 has some great pillow shots. Cooke are identical with their aperture blades making a octagonal bokeh look.
This was so much more enjoyable than the standard RUclips lens review it’s actually insane. It’s as if people forgot lenses are used to make movies not measuring breathing and distortion in boring control tests. Show me movies!
Sharegrid's massive cinema lens test is an amazing resource! They test each lens at different focal lengths and stops all running the same camera movements with the same model.
Great video! I was actually kinda suprised that ARRI Ultra, Master and Signature Primes seem to not play a huge role in cinema filmmaking. Would love to see a part two one day!
Thanks :) Sigma, Fujinon and Leitz coverage would be interesting, as well as the difference or role of Sirui anamorphics and other indie-affordable options.
Would love part 2. As it is really difficult to beginner DP’s to test multiple lenses. It’s a very beneficial to us to at least have a theoretical knowledge of different lenses. We cab shortlist and then test them.
Amazing stuff, thank you!! We need so much more of this kind of thorough info about cinema lenses on youtube! I would love to see this evaluation on Canon k35s, LOMOs and more modern Arri or Zeiss glass like Ultra Primes
Awesome content mate. This was a very educational and insightful video not only about lenses, but the film industry as well. I'd love a second part to it. Thanks
There's definitely not many videos providing an overview and comparison of different cinema glass sets/series, so thank you for this. Have you worked with Tribe7's Blackwing7 primes? Would love to see that or another newer lens series in part 2. Edit: It'd be really cool to see a video on the basics of camera tests for a shoot to go along with the cinema lens videos
I wondered if anyone would notice that haha. But the colour reproduction of the S4s are actually very consistent across the range/different sets. Unlike some older lenses like the Cooke S3 Speed Panchros (which can have certain lenses be way warmer than others depending on which set you get).
@@InDepthCine I thought the same thing, plus all the various different styles and luts applied to the original footage that change the image in different ways and thought, hey, this is still good information. I wish you could've supplemented this with your own footage mixed in that was shot more neutral to show everyone that hasn't been as lucky as myself to have used all these lenses but the Panavision lenses. Also no mention of the cooke anamorphics?
This was so great! Keep it up! Would love to hear more about the lenses we all hope to use one day. Also, maybe it’s just because I’m a camera nerd, but I’d love to see a breakdown on focus pulling as well. Blows my mind how they did it so well back in the day.
For anamorphic, the disproportionate breathing from Panavision lenses is actually intentional and desirable. Essentially, it only breathes in the vertical direction, while the horizontal exhibits close to no breathing. This creates an effect mimicking our eye lids closing down when focusing from far to near. Outside of Panavision, I've only seen this in the Todd AO 55mm T1.3, Xelmus Apollo, and Laowa Proteus surprisingly. Arri Master Anamorphic lenses are the only ones that don't have any breathing at all. The rest I'd categorise as having bad breathing behaviour, but it's all subjective at the end of the day.
Great Part 1, I really enjoyed it! Part 2 with Arri lenses and EF glass! Perhaps Part 3 with the future of glass, LPL, RF Mount, Sony FE - what will happen beyond PL basically.
I highly doubt anything will happen beyond PL or PV mounts as they are completely standardized and in this industry that is paramount for cross compatibility.
@@jamesmatthew7107 I don’t see PL going away as such, as you say, industry standard. But even with Arri introducing LPL, times are changing. Likewise, if RED goes full in on RF.
What I really wish is that you added the average cost of the lens, because after I watched the video i went hunting for price ranges. I am new to lenses and really appreciate this content.
Great and infomative video, I'd love to see a part two. Actually there are enough *real* cine lenses out there that you could consider making a series.
Would love a part 2. K35s, Arri lenses, zoom lenses, more anamorphic
same
Give it to me, feed my eye
Also could you introduce large format lenses, s16 and more maybe? :)
Thx so much !!! I.ve been praying for sur a video for a long time
Def, K35s, Arri Signature Primes, Zeiss Master, Ultra, Supreme, & Compact Primes, Angenieux Optimo, Leica Summicron and Summilux-C series, Panavision Primos, Super Baltars...
Yes! 👍
Would love a part 2. Amazing work so far. Your channel is the shit
Same, it's very useful when studying cinematography. I very highly recommend this for my fellow aspiring filmmakers.
This was great Gray! would love to see a part 2!
This is the kind of content I’m missing on RUclips! Please make this a long series!
Ooohh This is super insightful. As an aspiring filmmaker it is important to know that lenses play a huge part in making movies
Panavision C - Series will always be the best set of lenses!
I always love working with them and checking out the serial numbers. Often they'll be really low (like C50-5 or something) which means it's the 5th 50mm C-Series lens ever made. Would love to know where those lenses have been and what they've seen over the years.
No doubt. Instant nostalgia
Helpful as always! A channel like this where the creator actually knows what they're talking about AND states it straightforwardly and without pretense is a breath of fresh air. Keep it up!
Would love to see another of these that focuses exclusively on zoom lenses.

Owh man, as a 3D artist, you have no idea how badly I needed exactly that kind of information. You rule! Thank you!
Thank you so much for doing this! Would love to see part 2 of this video!
You are the best teacher anyone could ask for. Thanks for all your hard work. 🙏👏
I would LOVE to see a part 2. The technical aspect of your channel is fascinating.
Yeah let's please get a part two. This was exactly the kind of nerdy video essay I want in my youtube.
Definitely do a part 2! Cooke Xtal Express, Leica, Lomo, K35, etc.
I want a part 2 and 3 - Hell I’ll take as many parts as you can give. I love this channel. Thank you for all the information you share.
Just wanted to say your videos are excellent and just keep getting better. Would love a part 2.

Good to see/hear. Bring on part 2 and 3.
Part 2? Yes please Gray! 🎬💥🎥
Loved this! Would love a part 2 with Cooke Panchro Classics, the Arri master primes abd tge Arri anamorphics.
Sharegrid's massive cinema lens test is an amazing resource! They test each lens at different focal lengths and stops all running the same camera movements with the same model.
One of the best channels on RUclips
Great video. Bravo. Who wouldn't want a part 2?
Part 2 would be helpful... And also never stop making these videos 🙏🙏
Totally deserves a Part 2. 👍🏻
Would love to see a breakdown like this about old Vintage SLR lenses ie Canon FD, Takumar, Helios etc.
YES, YES a Part-2 would be much appreciated.
Great video! I was actually kinda suprised that ARRI Ultra, Master and Signature Primes seem to not play a huge role in cinema filmmaking. Would love to see a part two one day!
Please upload Part II! Love your content always
Part II please. Nicely done.
Thanks :) Sigma, Fujinon and Leitz coverage would be interesting, as well as the difference or role of Sirui anamorphics and other indie-affordable options.
Please make part 2! This was great!!!
A Part 2 would be terrific!

Heck yeah part 2! A show on HBO called The Third Day had some insane cinematography, any clue on what the heck they were using?
Sony Venice and hasselblad dna lenses :)
“Color matched across the set“: Shows different shots from a movie that was shot entirely with one focal length.
I wondered if anyone would notice that haha.
But the colour reproduction of the S4s are actually very consistent across the range/different sets. Unlike some older lenses like the Cooke S3 Speed Panchros (which can have certain lenses be way warmer than others depending on which set you get).
