I remember getting upset when Siskel and Ebert trashed this film. As if the filmmakers involved even remotely thought they were trying to win an Oscar for best film. I mean, for what it was - an action film - it's one of the best of all time and it was easy to see that right away.
Lmao I know what you mean. It always pissed me off too if they didn’t like a movie that I liked. But then on the other hand, I would get ecstatic whenever they got behind a movie that I DID like lol good times.
30+ years later it’s still on tv regularly. Siskel and Ebert would get in weird moods about movies. They’d get too serious about an action film, and upset when a drama wasn’t funny enough.
The guy with the Minigun that gets his chest blown out, he is Jesse Ventura, governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003. He also a world famous wrestler, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Saw it at the theatre (and, of course, now own the Blu-Ray). The testosterone level in this movie is off the charts. Like you said....unapologetic, and I love it.
Your question as to how Arnie survived the Predator's plasma caster shot: @12:56 you can actually see the bolt hit his gun first and blow it in half. Were it not for that, he would definitely have died. :)
Fun Fact: the voice/noises of the predator including the "purr" as you put it was done by Peter Cullen the same man who voices Optimus Prime in Transformers!
This movie was a Governor maker. Both Arnold and Jesse became Governors of their respective states later. I think Carl Weathers should have played the odds!! Lol. Love this movie. Great reaction!!
John McTiernan used the cast so effectively in this movie! Like Caped Informer mentioned, Bill Duke is probably the most talented actor here, so out of all the supporting cast he gets more lines/screen time than the others. Carl Weathers, same deal. Arnie gets the main focus because he's the most popular of them all. The rest of the actors do so well in the movie because McTiernan doesn't ask them for more than they can give him - a few lines here and there. Movies like this, or Die Hard, still hold up as well as they do because their scripts are AIRTIGHT. So many modern movies are based on scripts ranging from mediocre to just plain awful, but studios don't really care anymore, as long as they can throw big name actors and expensive CGI at it.
The guy who plays hawkins(dude with glasses) is shane black he a solid director.. did kiss kiss, bang bang, iron man 3, wrote the script for lethal weapon, the nice guys among more.. oh and the newer predator movie
I have watched a few reactions of Predator and some always wonder why Arnold survived the shot before " get to the chopper". It's because first it hit the gun and tore it in half and also the predator did it on purpose cause he was the last one and didn't wanna kill him fast. He wanted to play wit him
They actually they were not trying to set anything up. It was the prop guys who threw the alien skull in that scene for fun. But didn't think audience would see it.
I think Billy Duke and the Sunny Landham really compliment this movie well. When they both die it’s a significant uptick in seriousness just because of how well they played those roles. IMO.
The woman was never in danger, because she was a weak prey and a trophy from her would have damaged the reputation of the Predator in his society of hunters & gatherers rather than increase it, even if you could not know that at the time of course. This purposeful search for a "strong prey" makes Predators more sympathetic to me than aliens who go after everything, but you'll learn everything about the exact background of their culture in the parts "Alien VS Predator", which you'll probably also watch when you've finished the Predator series.
The shot that still haunts me is Dillon staring at Macs corpse who's eyes are wide open and you hear "anytime" in the background. Like Dillion was literally looking into the eyes of death
The Predator repeats that twice (Any time). Once immediately right after they destroyed the village and the Predator picks up the dead scorpion. And then of course after Mac is killed. I like the way it insinuates that the Predator could kill any one of those guys "any time" he wanted to.
The man who played the predator in this, also played the predator in part 2, and Harry(Big Foot) from Harry and the Hendersons Movie. He sadly died not too long after that. He was also the helicopter pilot in this movie.
Great reaction Caped! I love this film. The suspense is still awesome after so many years. The camouflage special effects and the armour were cutting edge for that time. The idea of a perfect alien predator coming to Earth to hunt for sport was really novel back then too. It's so interesting that you call it a macho film. Back in the day it was an Action-Adventure-Scifi film for all.
This movie is just different level of awesome it has a cast of Apollo Creed, 2 governors, the screenwriter that helped create the 80's action genre, a guy who accidently became a director (clerical error but he said f it and did the job and they loved his work).
Following the release of Rocky IV, a joke circulated in Hollywood that since Rocky Balboa had run out of earthly opponents, he would have to fight an alien if a fifth film were to be made. Screenwriters Jim and John Thomas took the inspiration from the joke and wrote a screenplay based on it. The Thomas script for Predator was originally titled Hunter.
This, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Lethal Weapon and RoboCop were the top films of 1987. This launched a massive franchise that consists of soon to be five main films, comics, graphic novels and videogames, some of which crossover with the Alien franchise. Arnold also released The Running Man later that year. The titular creature is from a race of interstellar warriors and trophy hunters with a strict code of honor. The vocal effects for the Predator were performed by Peter Cullen, best known for voicing Optimus Prime. Besides the three direct sequels, the story is continued in the online multiplayer Predator Hunting Grounds and its prequel novel Predator Stalking Shadows
I loved an 80s/90s Arnie movie! If Arnie couldn't blow it up, he shot it. Some hilarious lines: "I ain't got time to bleed." "Get to da choppa!!" "Knock, knock." "Stick around." "If it bleeds, we can kill it."
In the comic books the "Jungle Predator" survived. Dutch apparently breaks out with some infection and they drop him back off in the jungle and leave him. Then his brother starts to look for him. This happened a little bit before the "City Predator" arrived.......I think.
MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE! Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a giant lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, 7'2" was cast at the titular alien as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch. Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. Sonny Landham RIP whom played Billy hired a bodyguard to protect people from him as he was prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." It was 110 degrees in the shade while it was 42 degrees at night. It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult. The film was a box office and critical success making $100 million dollars ($350-400 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace.
Bill Duke is an amazingly great actor, but he's also an incredible great director, you've gotta check out his ''A Rage in Harlem'' (1991) and ''Deep Cover'' (1992).
Solid takes on the film, dude. Though I would argue that the slower pacing in the first act is what gets you as an audience member to care at all about these characters. We get a sense of who they are and their relationships to one another. Mac and Blain are total alpha bros and the tightest of the crew, when Blain gets killed, Mac is the one who picks up Painless (Blain's ridiculous gun) and goes berserk. The rest of the team follow because Mac is freaking out and they have his back, but also because it's the first time they as a unit have felt this kind of fear. We see how relaxed yet focused they are at their job and as a result are supremely confident in the first act. As things progress, this confidence is slowly replaced with dread. The death of Blain also causes Mac some significant trauma and spends the rest of his time in the film chasing a personal vendetta against this alien and begins cracking up as a result. I agree with you that Bill Duke has the best performance of the movie, his character has the most internal action of any of the cast. And yes, please give Predator 2 a shot. It's not at all the same movie as the first. Predator is an Action-Slasher and Predator 2 is over-the-top hard nosed, bad ass cop thriller. It's not quite as good as the first one, but everyone involved does a great job and it's a lot of fun. They even bring back Kevin Peter Hall to reprise his role as the predator in the sequel. Solid channel, dude.
Can’t wait for this one man. Been watching your vids for a while now, and dude keep up the great uploads! Your commentary is always insightful. You’ve got to do Annie hall man, none of the other big channels have done it and it’s one of the best comedies ever. Right up your alley.
The reason the predator looked nearly invisible is because it had tech that bent light around it. which is also why it did not work when it came out of the water.
predator is to today's movies as a good classic rock song is to today's music. it stands the test of time and will be remembered long after other movies have come and gone. 😄
You see the actor who plays the predator at the end, he is the helicopter pilot. The predator didn't kill him at the end because he found the trap Arnold had set. You can see him find the hidden spikes above his head. Oh and Jean Cluade van Damm was the original actor for the predator in a really ugly bug costume but luckily he was fired and the predator was redesigned.
This movie really is underrated I know it's well liked but watching it again it's better made than most 80's action movies. There's more build up more tension, great and likeable cast, great effects it's like Robocop in the way that people remember it as a cheesy 80's fest but they watch it and blown away by the craftsmanship involved.
I don't watch a lot in any Hollywierd today, but love those old movies growing up.. In fact I think 1/2 my movies are older movies why because they were fun with no agenda in them.
Pretty much EVERY reactor I've seen wonders about HOW Arnold "survived" the Energy Blast. (in the "GET TO THE CHOPPA" scene) If you look carefully (or play in slow motion) you see that the Energy blast hit his WEAPON! Not him directly. And sliced it cleanly in half. Though they DID include detail showing that the "edges" of the blast apparently DID ":cut" Dutch's inner bicep & outer torso. The reasons? You can argue; "Plot Armor", or that the Predator didn't want his "hunt" over so quickly (since Dutch was the LAST prey), OR the fact that he "swung" around the back of the tree & sort of quickly "shot from the hip" as it were. (I.E. didn't have time to aim AS precisely this time) Which speaks to the Predators IMMENSE accuracy that he STILL managed to destroy the gun.
Yeah I never got that scene where the blaster shoots his gun that somehow absorbed the shot. Didn't make sense. Could have been a different type of weapon used though since the guy just prior didn't have the laser go straight though his head where he was shot.
If you go back in the film, to scene where the laser seems to hit Arnold and doesn't kill him, you will see that it actually hit his gun and blew it into two pieces knocking him down. That's how he survived the shot. Because it didn't really hit him. Be safe man.
Every reactor asks the same Q, how did Dutch survive the 'laser' (ps. it ain't a laser but that's another discussion). Simple it didn't hit Dutch. It hit his rifle (and blasted it in two parts sending some shrapnel all over the place which is why he is bleeding).
The predator is a reflection of Man and the way man hunts animals on earth. But he only does it for trophies whereas most men hunt to eat the animals they kill. Not all, but most. Then like some men have to go and kill an animal by hand, this creature wanted to do that because Dutch was an unusual prey who fought differently. Its a good movie line.
1:21 that shot is epic, prime arnold almost noir feeling with the lighting, 80s camera resolution 👌 it just feels so right, bright red shirt. It's a shot I never appreciated fully but it stands out well
The laugh at the end is Billys. Definitely follow up with Predator vs Alien. Also check out another title Predators, starring Adrian Brody and Machete...as it harkens back to the original film.
Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally cast as the Predator, but when the 5'9" Van Damme was compared to Schwarzenegger, Weathers, and Ventura - actors over 6 feet tall and known for their bodybuilding regimens - it became apparent a more physically imposing man was needed to make the creature appear threatening. Additionally, it was reported that Van Damme constantly complained about the monster suit being too hot and causing him to pass out. He allegedly had also repeatedly voiced reservations about only appearing on camera in the suit. Additionally, the original design for the Predator was felt to be too cumbersome and difficult to manage in the jungle and, even with a more imposing actor, did not provoke enough fear. Van Damme was removed from the film and replaced by the 7'2" Kevin Peter Hall, who had just finished work as a sasquatch in Harry and the Hendersons.
I'm sure you've realized since, but the movie based the Predator's various actions on human hunters. It skins and bleeds (hangs) its prey because those are things hunters do if they want the pelts/skins or the meat. (Just like how it mimics the "calls" of its prey, wears camouflage, uses high tech weapons, etc.) While future movies, comics, and other media would portray the Predators as super-honorable hunters, I really don't think that was the intention of the first movie. Particularly the end, which seems a criticism of human hunters. It is an arrogant hunter that goes into a hunt with the deck stacked heavily in its favor, hunting "dangerous prey" in relative safety and ease. The hand-to-hand fight isn't honorable, the predator still believes it has the physical superiority to defeat that uppity prey animal. The personality capper being that when it finds itself truly bested, it doesn't honor the superior prey or try to survive or anything else of the like; it tries to kill Dutch with a suicide bomb (while "laughing", just in case the viewer mistook the reason.)
"Why is the blood green like that, and glowing?" Well... because it's literally the stuff from a glowstick ("stuff" is obviously a highly technical term for oxylate ester and hydrogen peroxide) mixed with K-Y jelly, for one thing. As far as biochemistry goes... well, the green _could_ be from a high sulfur content. There is actually a medical condition called sulfhemoglobinemia which can cause human blood to turn green. No idea why it glows; something that reacts with the oxygen in the air, possibly. Human blood and other body fluids will glow under UV light ("blacklight"), so whatever's in Predator blood has a much more energetic reaction to light and/or air. P.S., that's _not_ a laser. That is a _plasma caster._ Basically, it's shooting superheated gas contained in a magnetic bottle. In real life, you can't see a laser (except where it bounces off dust particles in the air, which scatters some of the beam) and where it contacts a surface (like when you shine a laser pointer on a wall). Also, if it was a laser, it would hit effectively instantly because, well, _it's a beam of light._
I wasn't initially impressed with the second movie when it came out. But it has stood the test of time, and I changed my mind on it. It was very good. As for the others, they were okay but not memorable.
The writing is actually pretty good, its just not the over dramatized hollywood crap that force feed character arcs that most movies have. This is meant to be a special forces team and you get the sense that yeah, they have been doing this a while. And they both act and talk like that, rather than a "get to know you" commentary. Maybe thats why you thought the dialog was 'bad', you're used to movies always doing that, but this isnt that kind of movie.
It’s a right of passage for yautja! They are dropped off on planet and have to survive without being caught and collect skulls from the dominant species. They do need Xenomorphs for this purpose
Predator is one of the best. Arnold at the top of his game. Bill Duke adds drama and emotion. One of the greatest movie creatures ever. And yes… unapologetic!
Thank you for recognizing Bill Duke and how fantastic he truly is!

They trashed the Silence of the Lambs too, and A Few Good Men.
bill duke's part when he's looking at the moon talking about his friend is the best part in the whole movie. amazing acting in that scene
The guy with the Minigun that gets his chest blown out, he is Jesse Ventura, governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003. He also a world famous wrestler, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
I love watching people's reactions when watching these classic movies for the first time. Predator 2 definitely needs a reaction vid from you.
Bill Duke also played in the movie Car Wash with Richard Pryor.
Saw it at the theatre (and, of course, now own the Blu-Ray). The testosterone level in this movie is off the charts. Like you said....unapologetic, and I love it.

I always wondered that too since Jesse Ventura had a thicker torso I think but still got blown open
I think the predator disarmed Dutch on purpose so he could see what his potential trophy was like un-armed.
@@MrRyguy2112 bingo!
@@MrRyguy2112 True. The Predator must’ve known Dutch was the leader and saved him for last.
A lot of reactors seem to miss that detail. But I guess it can be easy to miss for a first time viewer as quickly as things happen in the scene.
Fun Fact: the voice/noises of the predator including the "purr" as you put it was done by Peter Cullen the same man who voices Optimus Prime in Transformers!
Classic Arnie one liners a plenty.
"Get to the chopper'
"Knock, Knock"
"Stick around"
This movie was a Governor maker. Both Arnold and Jesse became Governors of their respective states later. I think Carl Weathers should have played the odds!! Lol. Love this movie. Great reaction!!

"He's wearing an MTV sleeveless shirt?....... That's dope, I actually want that shirt." 😂😂
Predator, Commando, Conan my trinity of testosterone I love!

The plasma cannon hit the gun. When I was a kid I just figured Arnold was just that solid lol.
Watch Predators with Adrien Brody. Since you’ve seen The Pianist, the juxtaposition for Brody is crazy.
“Gotcha Bitch!”
😂😂😂 perfection my guy
That joker is Shane Black. He wrote the movie.. And Lethal Weapon and many more...
Shane Black didn’t write Predator. He did do Lethal Weapon though.
@@michaelmyers3709 Yup... My bad.... Always thought that he atleast wrote the jokes....
He also directed the fantastic Kiss Kiss Bang Bang & Iron Man 3.
You gotta watch Predator 2 now! Danny Glover goes best mode, and it's my favourite Predator movie!
I'm glad at least you watched it finally. I watched it when it first came on cassette.
The 3rd movie "Predators" is also worth wacthing.
I grew a beard just during the chopper sence at the start and I was 10yo at the time.
Predator is perhaps the ultimate sci-fi/action mesh, a true classic, always entertaining. Cool to see your take on it , great choice!
It's a shot I never appreciated fully but it stands out well
Predator 2…..It’s different and criminally underrated.
The laugh at the end is Billys. Definitely follow up with Predator vs Alien. Also check out another title Predators, starring Adrian Brody and Machete...as it harkens back to the original film.
PREDATOR
THE MOST MANLIEST MAN MOVIE THAT HAS EVER MANED!!!!!!
💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
Only thing missing was The Macho Man, Oh Yeah..
I still enjoy the fact that Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original Predator & got switched out
Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally cast as the Predator, but when the 5'9" Van Damme was compared to Schwarzenegger, Weathers, and Ventura - actors over 6 feet tall and known for their bodybuilding regimens - it became apparent a more physically imposing man was needed to make the creature appear threatening.
Thank you Aaron.
That purring sound came from the man who plays Optamis Peime.
Some people don't like Predators with Adrian Brody, but I think it's the best one since the first one.
Great reaction bro! 👍🏿 All boys growing up in the 80s and 90s wanted to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Fun fact: One of the guys in the chopper at the end is the same guy that plays the Predator.
I'm sure you've realized since, but the movie based the Predator's various actions on human hunters. It skins and bleeds (hangs) its prey because those are things hunters do if they want the pelts/skins or the meat. (Just like how it mimics the "calls" of its prey, wears camouflage, uses high tech weapons, etc.)
While future movies, comics, and other media would portray the Predators as super-honorable hunters, I really don't think that was the intention of the first movie.
Sick double feature!
The plasma beam his Arnnies gun and blew it in half, it didnt hit him directly.
Agreed. Bill Duke best performance.
Arnold survived the laser shot because it hit his GUN, not him. Best line in the movie? "I ain't got time to bleed!"
The movie that made 2 State Governors. Jessie "the body" Ventura, and Arnold became politicians.
13:05 The predator was aiming for the gun, not for Arnie, notice how the gun falls to pieces.
In sane how many politicians came out of this movie.....think about it...The best and only Predator movie.
Arnold survived the lazer because it hit his gun, that's why it split in half
Classic movie
I think that Jean Claude van Damme was a stuntman in that film.
It’s a right of passage for yautja! They are dropped off on planet and have to survive without being caught and collect skulls from the dominant species. They do need Xenomorphs for this purpose
