They actually filmed this during a real arm wrestling tournament. The guy who won was John Brzenk. He was a very young, arm wrestling phenom back then and is now considered the GOAT of arm wrestling. That being said, he may actually be eclipsed soon by a guy from Canada named Devon Larratt. Devon Larratt has been on the NBA tonight on TNT and arm wrestled Shaq and also arm wrestled the Strong Man and actor from Game of Thrones, The Mountain, Halfthor Bjornson. Devon arm wrestled in contests like Arm Wars and WAL World Arm Wrestling League among others. Devon was also in a Tier one Canadian Special Operations unit called JTF2.
Arm Wrestling is actually HUGE right now. Famous RUclips strength personality Larry Wheels got into it and because of that a lot of his fans became fans of arm wrestling like he did. Larry Wheels has worked with Devon, Michael Monster Todd and Levan Saginishvili from the country of Georgia among others.
Funny timing, you reviewing this movie because last Saturday, 11/11/23 in Turkey, they had arguably the greatest arm wrestling card ever put on. East vs West 10 took place. Engin Terzi, a famous arm wrestler from Turkey has been putting on these East vs West contests for a while now and Larry Wheels started a series of contests called "King of the Table" which i believe is going into its 9th iteration.
At any rate, the important thing to note is that Arm Wrestling is having something of a "Golden Age" right now. Sure a lot of you probably don't know about it but people who follow strength athletes like strong man athletes like Larry Wheels, Half Thor ect know about Devon Larratt and the current status of arm wrestling, its tournaments and stars. Many of the great ones right now come from Georgia, Russia, Italy, etc, not just North America. So at this latest contest, East vs West 10, Devon Larratt freaking blitzed a really famous former champion named Dennis Cyplenkov.
Trust me.... Arm Wrestling is alive and well. I totally got hooked on it because of Devon and i am pretty sure i found out about him because of either the NBA tonight episode or Larry Wheels.
I'm in my late 40's and when i was in Jr. HS in WA state we had some kind of arm wrestling champion come and host a contest at our school during lunch because of this movie, Over the Top. I ended up having to arm wrestle someone older with my non dominant hand and got slaughtered up on the stage during lunch in front of everyone. Not a fun experience. lol I would go on to be a physical freak and serve in US Special Operations myself though so it's all good memories at this point.
Love Stallone... his movies are great. Gotta give a shout out to "Lock Up"... Donald Sutherland plays the Antagonist. Pretty great, largely forgotten Stallone movie from the 80's... the greatest decade.
Over the Top is awesome. If you want... you can find a fairly recent John Brzenk interview where he talks about winning the tournament from the movie and winning the Semi. Apparently he and Stallone both got one. The movie was supposed to propel the sport but didn't really have the effect the arm wrestlers were hoping for.
I love the movie.. its music and most of all the father son bonding theme and redemption story.

As an 11 year old kid seeing this in the theatre I loved this movie, it was basically Rocky of Arm Wrestling and Stallone and Rocky have been my idols since 1982 when I saw Rocky III in the theatre. Now as a 48 year old, I love this movie for a whole different reason, I don't see it as an action film anymore, I see a story about a father fighting with everything he has to be with his child. There is a massive problem going on that most people don't know about and I need to bring some awareness to and that is that millions of good fathers across the world are fighting with everything they have just to be with their children. I am one of those millions and I fought for 3 years against a corrupt court system and a narcissistic ex who was hell bent on destroying me. I fought until it almost killed me and almost bankrupted me. The fight took so much out of me and I'll never be the same again but it was worth it because my daughter is back with me now. Stallone makes movies about fighters (not necessarily boxers), about underdogs fighting against huge odds and risking everything and I just relate so strongly to that.
Caped Informer, I've said it before and I'll say it again, there are sooooo many content creators doing movie reviews, it's such a flooded sector, but you are absolutely my number one favorite, so keep it coming my friend!

I don't know exactly why I thought of this, but there's another movie from the same time frame, called "The Wizard". It's not exactly the same, but the vibe is kind of similar, and there are some other parallels, but if you like this, I think you might dig it. It's kind of a forgotten flick, but it brings back childhood memories for me. You're probably too young to know Fred Savage, but he was a child star at the time, that was the star of a TV show called "The Wonder Years" that was a hit, and this was back in the days where network TV was still a thing, and we didn't have much of a choice of things to watch. I'm 45 years old, and chances are that anyone around my age probably watched "The Wonder Years" every week at the same time. Off that success, he did a few movies, but once he hit puberty, and wasn't exactly the same cute little kid anymore, it was kind of over for him. Though he still pops up once in a while, and I also think became a director in TV. Oh! I believe you did "The Princess Bride". He's the kid from that.

    "Meet me half way
    Across the sky
Up where the world belongs to only you and I" ❤️ Stalone, David Mendenhall and Kenny Loggins? Talk about a perfect 80's combo!! This movie is a classic with a lame premise that shouldn't work, but with the right cast and decent writing, plus cool testosterone "fight" scenes, it's a no brainer! You may laugh but you can't help but love it...cuz the feelz. 😉 ❤️
This and Rocky 4 were on virtual repeat in my VHS machine when I was a teen. That truly was the year of Stalone! I watched both movies so many times I practically have both memorized!
I grew up "with" David Mendenhall...he was part of so many kids projects and sitcoms in the 80"s, watching him star in this was awesome! He was so good in this and one of the child actors I loved watching at the time. Along with Drew Barrymore, Soleil Moon Frye, Henry Thomas and so many others. We really had a fantastic pool of child actors back then. ❤️

Even when i saw this movie as a kid.. i always thought the son was a jackass.. and rewatching it as an adult he’s still a whiny, crying jackass. 😂😂

Hey why is it we say how cheesy a movie or TV show is & yet in the real world conversation is often cheesy. I carnt go through a day at work when someone doesn't comes across a bit cheesy. It's a common thing & yet most of us criticised a show or film for being cheesy I just don't get it

Yeah you don't have to be big & strong that's all a myth. It's all in the mind I know that for a fact because I won a tournament just a local one still most of the competitors were bigger
