I’m curious, do fig trees grown in pots always stay skinny? The trees I’ve seen growing in ground were much thicker. Joe is it because your trees are young?

Yes That’s exactly right the older they get the thicker the trunk

#figmadeira Hi how are you? I just came back from a holiday in Portugal 🇵🇹 and what I brought with me in the bag 8 branches 🎋 of black Madeira and 3 white Madeira. Now in a day or two, I will start to put them and get roots. Which is the best way to do it? I am waiting for your advice.

Hi Yannis lucky you for visiting Portugal. First clean the cuttings if they are dirty. Then put 2-4 vertical thin cuts on sides using clean knife that will allow roots to form from those cuts. Make sure you have two to three nodes to put in the soil. If it’s dry wood with no green use rooting hormone if any green or one year old wood don’t use rooting hormone my experience is it rots the wood faster. Fill 4”x8” inch sandwich bag fill with any potting soil not dry just moist potting soil. If too wet it will rot the wood. Wrap only the part that’s not going in soil with Parafilm m3 or budding tape one layer so it dosent dry out very important this step will allow you to leave cutting longer In bag. Place in 4x8 bag with rubber band tied around the top bag and cutting to hold in place or a zip tie and leave bag in warm room.
Yannis the most important thing is temperature of room 24-25 Celsius and moist soil. Not wet not dry soil moist. You can always add water to the bag with a syring.Than leave it alone. Takes 2-6 weeks depending. The black Madeira is harder to root so don’t play with it no need for light. The other method I use is put in water till I see white buds on the cutting then put in soil this method has a fifty fifty chance but easier. You use 500 ml water bottle suspend the cutting by taping it in place and leave till you see roots or white buds. Then plant in small rooting container 4x8 The bag method has 95 percent success rate. Since you have few cuttings start with one in bag and one in water bottle
Good luck Yannis thank you for your support.
