    You can't overwater by amount in pots, you can overwater by frequency. More so when your potting soil holds too much moisture.

    QC Tropicals channel agrees that in heat it's better to overwater as long as you have well draining soil. This is because youtr fruit tree will die within hours if very dry in extreme heat while it would take weeks to damage your tree by overwatering. It's my first year growing fig trees in the arid southwest Texas heat (95°F+), and I had to really up the watering frequency to prevent drooping and dry leaves.

    • @FigMadeira
      @FigMadeira 9 месяцев назад

      Hi Nafisa the best way to root a big branch is to air layer it if it’s still on the tree. If you have cut it I would do the water in an equivalent size bottle but I would let the roots grow out in the water. The branch when big has a lot of life energy in it. Wrap the branch that’s above soil with Parafilm to keep it from drying and sooner or later it will root. Don’t forget to change the water and don’t mess with it. Hi lostpony4885 the Kodata also known as Peters honey is a great honey fig. It produces Breba and main crop. The one I have in ground and in pot ripens the Breba but not the main crop. I would prune for breba leaving all last year growth.Bottom line it’s location and weather that affect us in Pnw. When fruit is ripening we need the heat. Even if your pots are right your soil can be trapping water. As it ages its fiber decomposes and it becomes less permeable so i had lot of problems this way; can happen just enough to clog up the drainage. Im moving to fabric pots because they dry out fast and i can feel them to know how the moisture is doing. When parch comes in late summer this will be risky a bit but i'll be placing them in troughs for that time to streamline and cushion the watering procedure.

    • @FigMadeira
      @FigMadeira 10 месяцев назад

    • @FigMadeira
      @FigMadeira 11 месяцев назад

      Hi dvsayer you are already successful with rooting fig cuttings and it’s just those two that are hard. I would try the water method to see if you can get white spores but they do sound like they might be dead. I as a last resort would put them in 3”11” plastic bag with potting soil. Parafilm the exposed wood and tie rubber band around top to not lose moisture and leave them in there to make sure. On line is hard at times to get good cuttings. Thank you for watching and good luck.

    Hi there! Fig channels pop into my you tube feed now as im always looking for info. I live below you in the pnw, near port townsend.... I bought fig trees 4 yrs ago and put them in ground. One produced about 30 figs last summer. The other ones just a couple...they are desert kings i got at a nursery. I just went and bought 4 more of various other kinds...keep trying to find out why you all grow them in pots? Is it just so you can bring them inside in winter? Plus squirrels try to get them too. I see them going to check for ripeness just as we would! So your saying if i grow in pots then bring them into the shed with 75⁰ and humidity in 40% range the second crop will actually ripen? Thats interesrting! I just wish id get a first crop!!!! Really the trees have grown quite tall ...about 9 t or 12 ft but not so many figs! I would like to get a bunch of ripe figs!!!! I have nine trees now! The 4 i just bought i think ill grow in pots i guess see all these guys who say they stuck a branch in the ground and that same summer have a lot of figs on a tiny new start. But i have tried to root some branches with no luck yet!! 75⁰ is pretty warm for a shed and so much to heat! Im getting a new 10x12 shed built right now so it would be best to insulate the walls then i guess. Also i see all the lights u have on the trees. Do u turn the lights off for about 8 hrs? Its not natural to have light on them constantly is it?? Overall my trees are getting established but seems odd i dont have a ton of fruit by now!

    • @FigMadeira
      @FigMadeira Год назад

      Hi Dvs Sayer Port Townsend is like Mediterranean weather dry summers. Desert kings love that kind of weather. The Desert king is a one crop fig tree. Only in California or Mediterranean where the fig wasp lives can you get second crop. So all your figs will grow on last year wood. So think that every new branch this year will give you figs next year. I would suggest you prune the tree down and keep it close to the ground at end of this year season.It should give you figs on last years growth this year though so be patient. The reasons for growing fig trees in pots vs in ground are many but here are a few like wanting many varieties and not enough room,wanting variety that are late to ripen figs or ones that don’t do good in very cold winters. The bottom line a fig in ground will give the whole family figs one in a pot will give you only enough fruit. As for the lights I run them 14-16 hours on and 8 hours off. I would recommend a negronne peters honey and Adriatic they all will do well there. Good luck my friend and thank you for watching

    #FigMadeira Hello how are you? You remember that I have been to Portugal for holidays and coming back to London in UK I brought 12 branches of Black fig Madeira, and 4 branches of White fig Madeira.. I am happy with the White Madeira because all are rooted and have got now nice leaves, BUT the 12 Black Madeira look dead. Not even one looks good, just very brown I touch them but as I said very dry probably dead. I want to which you Merry Christmas and a happy New Year Regards Yannis

      Hi Yannis it’s always good to hear from you. You have done well with the White Madeira and should be proud. The Black Madeira is suppose to be very hard to root and I haven’t tried myself. I would cut the ends to see if there is any life left in them. I have left my Col De Dam blanc in rooting bags for 3-4 months b4 getting any roots and leaves. Sometimes when they look dry they might still have life. Yannis I would suggest for the Black Madeira that you order a rooted cutting and go from there. My first year trying to root cuttings of any kind failed 100%. The fact that you rooted the white Madeira means you know what you are doing. I would suggest that the Black Madeira cuttings might be more temp and humidity sensitive. I will focus a lot of my videos on the Black Madeira next year hopefully that helps. Don’t give up my friend and have a joyous Merry Christmas and great new year. I really appreciate all your thoughts and support. May the fig gods smile on us all.

      Hi Denisbear83. We are in the Pnw so our winters are mild but we still have to winterize the fig trees. It’s easy indoors to achieve 22 Celsius temp 71 Fahrenheit. Just 4 led and small heater. Thank you for watching.

    I it worth it tho?? Mine are all in my cold room. I have 4 foot led shop light im using for my small citrus trees and other plants i decided to overwinter. I have fig pops Im starting to root and ima move them to the lights when they start developping buds

      Hi Surchaufeur thank you for your comments I think it is worth it. If you are thinking about how many figs you will get for the time and effort and money in winter season it’s not worth it. But I grow all my cuttings and air layer and young plants in winter so come spring they are ready. All the main tree are in a cold room like yourself. Also it truly is for the fun of it all. Thank you for your support

    I’m getting my first fig cutting today to start indoors, how do you identify what type of fig?

      Ask the seller what kind of fig it is. 😊

      Hi Leslie thank you for watching. It is hard to tell the type of fig tree from the cutting. You can ask what colour are the figs and if it gets two crops or one a year. You can look and compare leave lobes. Also you can ask person giving it to you if it taste like sugar honey or berry (fruity) flavour. From there you can try figuring it out. I would suggest that every fig tree is unique and I would grow it to maturity and enjoy it no matter what. You will become an expert in no time. My first ever fig tree was unknown and turned out to be a desert king. Delicious fig.

    I’m curious, do fig trees grown in pots always stay skinny? The trees I’ve seen growing in ground were much thicker. Joe is it because your trees are young?

    • @FigMadeira

      Yes That’s exactly right the older they get the thicker the trunk
