5:10 , extremely small detail here, but you can see that just before Bocchi(the lead guitarist)'s slide solo starts, Ryo (the bassist) turn to Nijika (the drummer) and signal her to replay the section so Bocchi's solo doesn't go off beat, extremely good example of band teamwork.
Oh so that’s why the drummer gave a big nod to the bassist! Haha now to do an addendum video. How to communicate without in ears!
Ah, I knew there was a reason for the quick cut to Ryo and Nijika, and I've been wondering since I watched the episode how they were reacting to Kita and Bocchi's impromptu solos, but I couldn't figure it out. This makes perfect sense!
Edit: In addition, I love how it shows that, while Kita's observation and reaction takes center stage, the others are still paying full attention to Bocchi to see if she's going to pull something out. Ryo turned to give Nijika the signal the moment Bocchi got up, meaning she had to be looking at Bocchi at least since nearing the end of Kita's solo and she knew Bocchi well enough to see she was getting up with the intention of playing. In addition, all three were fully ready, willing, and able to extend the song without missing a beat to give Bocchi her time in the limelight.
It honestly puts some tears in my eyes when I rewatch this scene. Kita pushing herself to give Bocchi a chance; Bocchi responding by pulling herself together, thinking on her feet, and delivering one hell of a banger; and now, Ryo and Nijika patiently watching over Bocchi, ready to support her by either continuing the performance without a hitch or extend it to give her a chance to shine.
Also, I rewatched that specific moment when Ryo turns around multiple times just now just to confirm. I think, for just a moment, at the veeerrry last frame or two before it switches to Nijika, Ryo has a very slight smile on her face.

Ryo and Nijika both looked at each other to replay that section of the song so that Bocchi could do her improvised solo. The full release of the song doesn't have a double solo section, really neat small addition to show that they're all working together to help make the band shine together.
I hadn’t noticed that bit of detail, thanks for pointing it out! I must say, this anime has quite a diverse marketing strategy, with the anime and the music working hand in hand. I was actually first introduced to the Spotify album!
Bocchi doesn't fail to surprise me.
In episode 6 with their first performance they Re-Recorded “Guitar, solitude, and the blue Planet” to make it sound bad so when Bocchi did her improvised solo at the start of “That Band” it had more impact
I love that not only did they release a full canon album but they released it how it would originally have been intended by the character in-universe, really makes it immersive
This anime understands what it's like to be a musician. That's why it's so highly regarded at this moment.
The struggles, the successes, the hard work, the sigh of relief when you get by by the seam of your pants...
The sinking feeling when you don't perform well, how important it is to have other musicians around you to support you and help you grow... it's all there. :)
And these experiences are also to be found in church! Which is why I find some relevance discussing the band’s situations from the lens of a worship music director.
@@AllAboutWorshipGuitar I mean you're essentially putting on a mini concert every week, yeah? Although there would be very specific pressures to playing in front of mostly the same people every service, I'd imagine.
A non-church goer's words have stuck with me: Christianity is the biggest cover band industry to work on the Sunday morning. And I think there's truth in that, haha!
Yes indeed, one of which is balancing the pressures of choosing songs that resonate with both the older and younger generations. Sometimes we do a bad job of trying to pander to both, and in so doing, cater to no one in the process.
@@AllAboutWorshipGuitar Yeah I can see that being a significant issue. You would have a different variety of demographic ranges than a band that has a specific audience that they play to. Probably kind of similar to bands that do birthdays, bat mitzvah, weddings, etc? Except even more pronounced.

I love how realistic this anime were for musicians, the attention to details is nuts
I have yet to watch the anime but if what I’m seeing in these clips are anything to go by, it’s a good sign!
The performance are motion captured by real band for reference, then hand drawn frame-by-frame by the anime artists. The musical highlight for me is actually episode 8 where they had a bad performance on stage - the performance managed to capture the stage fright of the vocal, the low confidence of the members, the incoherent of a band, while at the same time did not make any major mistakes.
Honestly, when I first watched Episode 12, the first couple of minutes were just the most nervous I'd ever felt on behalf of a group of anime-characters. Things went well to start with, but then Bocchi's string breaks, and the nerves just kept piling on from there. I was literally sitting there, worrying about how she would salvage the situation, since she didn't have any other guitar available. Then, Kita (the singer) jumps in and does her solo-thing to buy Bocchi some time to come up with a solution, before Bocchi finally, in a desperate attempt to save the show grabs one of Hiroi's empty sake-bottles and improvises the only slide-solo I've ever heard in an anime, and I remember actually standing up from the couch with a loud "Fuck yeah!", before giving her the standing ovation that she deserved.
I'm fully aware that it may sound like I'm exaggerating, but keep in mind that this is an anime that evokes *a lot* of strong emotions in some people. I've never related more to any anime character, that I do to this show's cast. Easily recommended to watch all 12 episodes

BROO LEGIT IM SWEATING, I thought Kita gonna betray Bocchi and make herself look good by soloing the guitar (cuz she actin suspicious the day before), but thank god this end up being a wholesome anime
If I had watched the anime from the start, I have a feeling my reaction would be the same as Kasper's!
And what's even more impressive to me is that Kita has only been playing guitar for a few months at that point. Less than a year at least. And she's singing while playing chords and then improvised a solo. Bocchi is usually thought of as the prodigy to fans, but IMO that's super impressive.
im glad there's someone that analyze this part. i was so amazed how much i could learn and relate as a guitar player myself from this episode alone. actually i encounter very similar problem on stage like bocchi does. my 1st string broke on solo part and even worse im using a floating bridge( so my tuning is completely off on ALL strings) so i immediately took my trem bar and play the rest of the solo like using a bottleneck. after that since there's another solo part at the end of the song i immediately switch to another guitar before the next part. it went well and yeah that sigh of relief? totally done that after the song. so i guess my advice would be especially if you are using floating bridge guitar, bring a 2nd guitar if you can. cheers :)
Sounds like you went with the Steve Vai strategy of applying pressure on the bar to find your pitch, AND the SRV strategy of changing guitars mid-song! You're a champion!
Oh yes to a backup guitar where possible. For one gig I had two backups; main guitar didn't work, the first backup didn't work, and the second backup thankfully worked!

I actually had something similar happen to me where I had my high E string snap during a gig. But, it was basically at the end during our encore and we were doing the big "rock and roll" style finish. Luckily, it was just on my Les Paul so I didn't have all my other strings go out of tune and the people in the audience loved it since it seemed to be an indication that "we were rocking out so hard, my string just had to snap". That was a fun show
You’re not learning anything from this scene stop being ridiculous. It’s like those idiots who say they learned some Japanese through anime.
The show has two strong points. The first is it's music and portrayal of musicians. The second is the main character's struggle with social anxiety and the show's portrayal of her inner mental state through drastic shifts in animation styles and visual gags. Just how the show realistically shows how the band has to come together to refine their music and cover for each other, the lead character realistically grows through small steps as she boosts her confidence and makes friends. Honestly a pretty wholesome comedy all things considered.
It's a strange thing for introverts wanting to play in a band that takes centre stage (I should know, I'm one of them)!

A string went just as I was about to play a solo. The band stopped completely except for the drummer. The bass player told the crowd that this was just because I needed a better guitar. I got a guitar from another band's guitarist, and when I started playing, the crowd cheered…
Excellent recovery! It’s great that the whole band was on board and even made some light humour out of it. You even got another band to share gear! That’s such an encouraging story.
Last time I broke a string just before a solo and didn't have time to swap guitars, I VERY quickly (and mostly correctly :) ) remapped the entire solo an octave down in a different position on the neck so I didn't need that missing high E string. *phew* :)

I'm not even a little bit of a musician but I really liked this show and hearing all of this technical stuff about this scene alongside just a hint of the Christian assessment of the characters serving one another is just really heartwarming for some reason lol. 5:11 another example of attention to detail: right before the solo, they show the bassist looking at and synchronizing with the drummer again. One thing I learned as a praise drummer in college was how important it is to work with your bassist as a percussionist.

Regarding the part about Kita covering for Bocchi, I also agree that it feels a little bit unrealistic, especially when you consider that Kita is highly socially active and just recently has been learning to play guitar. She even admits to being good only at vocals and rhythm guitar. Therefore, what I consider amazing isn't that Kita covers for Bocchi, it's that she had to be brave enough to do it while knowing her own flaws as a musician and risking another tanked gig. I feel this is a great example of team work and faith in your band mates.
Because I didn't watch the rest of the anime, I hadn't realized Kita is supposed to be a "beginner"; her playing and her rhythm solo certainly doesn't indicate it!
So true about supporting your fellow musicians. There's nothing I love more than seeing someone in a bind during a jam session and doing something to inspire them to keep moving on.
Or the collective “Oops guys I accidentally cut out a section, what do we do?” And everyone chuckles a bit, gets on board, and carries on.
This totally happened to me during our last gig before the pandemic. Rhythm guitar had my back: he cut the E string of his guitar too so that we were off by the same amount. When the bassist saw us he cut his G string, but that was too much so we had to cut our B and G strings too. However, rhythm guitar went too far and cut his D string, so I had to cut mine, and bassist cut his D too. By this time the drummer had slashed his high and medium toms too just to go with the flow. The sax (we had a sax) tore out the last three keys of his instrument. You can guess the rest. We finished that song a capella.
Wonderful and inspiring example of teamwork.

I heard someone who said this is too unrealistic cuz she doesnt have that much experience on stage to perform those improvisation. But i think, because of Bocchi playing guitar for 3 years on her own, and became a famous guitarist online, she might have played with different techniques already. In this scene, all she need is time to realize what she need to do. Well, Kita (the rythm) gave her enough time to improvise. Yeah, that bottleneck part is improvised for this anime only. The official release of the song has different solo and doesnt have that extra solo made by Kita. That made the anime even better
Now I gotta hear the soundtrack! Thanks for the info. As someone who briefly taught guitar, I can attest that some people learn in 3 years what others take 10 years. There are a few with an amazing affinity for the instrument, who can make the connections between the fingers, the fretboard, and their musical expression much quicker.

This Show does a lot if thing’s correctly, but the number 1 thing is showing personal growth, and that includes teamwork. In episode 6 they we’re having a bad performance due to horrible weather and lower morale, but Hitori (Bocchi) did an Improvised solo after the first song to get out of their Funk, and when she did, Ryou and Nijika looked at eachother, nodded, and the Stage technician saw them do this and immediately she changed the gear and lights toward the next song, it shows how intricate and connected people have to be to make something like a Live concert work
Thanks for the additional context! Makes the scene in episode 6 much more powerful. I'm just surprised they had the time and the effort to sync lights to their music, which normally isn't done for small bands!

K-ON! made me pick up a guitar, now i play bass, guitar and keyboards, if that anime didn't show up in my life then music wouldn't be a part of it... Yui inspired me, looking at how she didn't know anything about music yet she pushed herself to learn, i haven't watched this anime but i hope it is inspiring the new generations to grab an instrument, one of the best decisions of my life.

i'm a highschooler who has been playing in a church band for 3 years and i'm glad i found an actual christian worshipper that checked out this part of the anime. not only because this is a cool and very great recovery plan for when a string snaps, this anime itself is very enjoyable. i do main acoustic a lot more than electric guitars but i am slowly making my way up to a higher level than i am before because of this anime.. thank you for the reaction!

Bocchi was one of the surprise animes this season for me. Really funny and heartwarming and some catchy music as well.

As from recovering from mistakes, I did have my whole in ear monitor dying on me just seconds before the final song in a theatre show once… I couldn’t do much more than trusting I had the right sound, listen to the drums which were the only thing I could hear (except for some distant wind instruments on the other side of stage) and keep playing… 😅
Wow that’s a scary situation, and I can totally relate cause I did theatre gigs before (the conductor hated my pedalboard because of the CLICK of 3PDT switches, and I’ve had to go with modelling devices that had soft touch switches ever since). Hearing the instruments from the other side of the pit must have had a little bit of latency!
I would love to see you do a full show reaction for your musical insights. As well as the additional context and importance of what this scene means to the characters.
I am certainly inspired to do this, daunting as an undertaking as it sounds! My friend who knows the anime said that I started from the wrong direction, and that this is the culmination of the band’s growth and trajectory!

During one of my first concerts with a large band made with lots of teenagers we had to learn the solo of a song and i wasn’t able to learn it in a good way in time so there was only one person that could do it. During the concert she was about to start the solo but the guitar umplugged and the ampli wasn’t set right. I was right there and immediatly told her “go on and play it” while i setted evrything up (i also increased the volume more than what should have). So yeah, this scene felt a bit emotional and was really well executed. Waiting for season two🎸
Sounds like you were the adhoc guitar tech! I've been there myself, running over to troubleshoot something on the floor as the musician played on as if nothing was wrong.

There are teachable moments wherever we look!
Animation in Bocci included photographic templating and rotoscope (tracing IRL video). I’m at an age where any more time spent on music has to pay the mortgage and Feed the kids, (at least a little) and while I’m not much of a church person I’m also keenly aware that worship band gigs are one of the few gigs that actually pay for the value created in the music in a way that lets the musicians go on living.
Great story about the keys at your gig. I find I’m often playing alongside a synthesist and I’ve learned to go give and take with the knobs on my own rhythm/texture electronics as we work to achieve syncopation and tuning along the rhythm parts. So I can relate-it can be tough to let go of a pattern crafted as part of the arrangement in order to “make it work” in the moment.
Thanks for the honest sharing of your own musical anecdotes-that’s the sort of thing we break bread over too little as performers.
Our keyboardist had the temerity to get her architecture degree and move away a couple years ago, so I've been doing a lot more "background/fill/pad" type things with the guitar. A new keyboardist just started playing with us, and I'm having to shift mental gears back to being more of a straight up guitarist so we don't collide in the mix. :D
Haha, I just think sharing our stories helps us feel like we're not alone in the struggles. But that also turns inter-church worship ministry networking sessions into group therapy sessions (oops!).
I'm at an age where I'm really ok with "losing my part" for the greater good. Like Bryan Beller holding on to Mike Keneally's keyboard when the keyboard stand broke mid-song with one hand and he had to finger-tap his bass parts with the other!
Apparently this anime used rotoscoping, but it's not the only one to do playing right. The times where characters played instruments in Zombieland Saga, they also had the animation playing correct - since those segments were CG and they obviously used mocap to get those parts. A bit of a "cheat", but not cheesing it with random movements to the beat like most animation does.
I cringe so much when I see those random movements that don't match what I hear. If they at least animated them to move to the same tempo that would be alright, haha.

Hi, another Christian here. As a weeb is a shame I haven't got the time to actually sit down and watch this anime but I will definitely do it when things settle down.
As for experience. I play bass in my church, and I don't have my own bass yet (work in progress). One day before service the winder for the D string snapped. Me, the bass and the D string itself is okay but without winder we can't reattach the string. Thankfully the bass is 5-string one so for some notes I can still play it in lower register. I just need to be patient and do less improve for the sake of accuracy. Context : still learning bass, and it's a small church with currently only 2 active bass player.
Time to let the rafters of your church rumble with that low B! And with 2 bass players, I'm sure you're being rotated more frequently; that's where you'll experience much more growth due to playing that much more! Keep on keeping on, fellow brother in the Lord!
They had real musicians perform and then animate over them the characters so that’s why the anime are usually in time and performing the correct parts in majority of this scene. Same with other scenes in the anime. I can’t remember the term but anime productions are using this technique more to capture musical performances and other complex moves. This episode and scene is great for showing what to do when something happens. Stay cool and just work thru/around it. I have to make adjustments all the time for others when they don’t realize they messed up and are off beat and not listening to me for rhythm. And I when I mess up on drums I just resume with the beat to keep everyone together instead of forcing something. Usually and unfortunately in Christian music and cover bands they don’t work together and support each other when something happens and just blame the person for not being prepared. It’s usually professional and solo artists that can improvise like this.
Or like me, who has had some professional experience playing gigs outside of church, we try and pass on these skills to our non-gigging church band members. It's hard! A lot of this is caught and not taught (through the crucible of fire of experience).
@@AllAboutWorshipGuitar yes, difficult. I did my best to teach people but if they are unwilling to learn or practice and a unsupporting ministry then it fails. That’s part of the reason I’m without a worship team now despite having went to college for music. No support. But the whole Bocchi series was funny and the performances relatable to us musicians even if exaggerated and funny.

I remember when I was 15.... I was the the guitarist and vocalist, I was paying so much attention to my guitar to the point when I was singing my voice literally disappeared because I forgot to breathe... In the end what I did was strummed my guitar to make a cover up... After that incident I practiced real hard...
Forgetting to breathe is serious! You must have been playing a technically challenging part. I have mumbled nonsense lyrics while trying to play lead guitar and sing at the same time, so I can relate to the difficulty in juggling both.

I'm a big fan of Bocchi the rock and I also played in a large worship service for quite a few years. I had had the exact same thing happen to me of my E string broke on the song before I had a solo and while playing I was transcribing the solo to the B string while playing the song. In talking to someone after the service they had remarked that it was cool how I just ripped the string off and just kept going.
I definitely agree on playing most of your stuff on slightly lower gain, but also have those drive pedals to give a good contrast. If you only play higher gain, there is very little to go up from there and then having that one solo you step on a higher gain pedal makes it stand out better. In terms of the compression, I've found compression pedals with a blend knob to be a best of both worlds situation, giving dynamics but also a bit of leeway with mistakes.
I also agree on having musical differentiation when you've got two guitars, having one guitar hit chunky power chords and another going for triads around the 6-12th frets gives variation and both guitar parts aren't fighting for the same frequency.
Finally, agreement on taking musical inspiration from as many sources as possible. I went into music having a mostly metal background, but eventually got into jazz, blues, rock, R&B, worship music, etc. By the time I got into playing worship music, I had a lot of styles that I could use and it made me a better musician all around.
I haven't played much music lately and my work conflicts with me playing in a band or worship band, but watching this reminded me of all the good times I had with it. Cheers and have a blessed day!

Heh, I wonder if our sources of inspiration (especially our metal backgrounds) overlap. I was asked to tone it down when I first joined the ministry cause of John Petrucci-style chromaticism and 3-note-per-string shred patterns.
@@AllAboutWorshipGuitar hahahahaha. Dream theatre/Petrucci was definitely one of my influences, also a lot of Boris and Buckethead. I was given a lot of freedom, possibly too much freedom, but was allowed to improvise every guitar solo I got handed, I’d start with a 10-13(bend to 15) and let the Spirit take it from there. I did receive interesting comments on using the Zvex Fuzz factory pedal on the comment of “it sounded like your amp was exploding”.
As long as I kept to the “experimental” stuff to the guitar solos I didn’t encounter much resistance. I had played a mixture of my church’s high school service and the adult service and had more experimental freedom during the high school services compared to the adult one.
You know I had the exact comment about the time I plugged in and played with our church's Peavey Blues Classic. "The amp sounds like it's exploding"...yeah, cause no one bothered to crank the tube distortion and tweak the reverb, and all anyone ever did was run it bone dry clean!
I can relate to the youth service being more experimental and open. For a while I was playing guitar for youth instead of adult service. Back then, we could get away with Planetshakers (their heavy phase) and Kutless...
the playing with the jar thing reminded me of a local rock band called Divididos (Argentinean rock), the lead singer would sometimes play with a jar or something kind of a a joke, this band has an amazing chemistry and is always fun to watch them live, they always play a lot between them and with the crowd
X Japan had a running gag from a video where Hide the lead guitarist uses a beer bottle as a slide. It's a very inconvenient form factor to play slide with, and it's more for entertainment value than anything else!
There's a near-legendary DC area guitarist, the late great Danny Gatton, known locally as "The Master of The Telecaster", who was known for playing slide with whatever oddball objects the audience would hand him - bottles, watch bands, on one notable occasion a rubber chicken... :D

This made me realize... I would be the absolute worst as a front man. I would practice the CONTINGENCIES as much as the regular songs. I.E. "Okay, now let's take it from where you can't use X string no more" or "Let's try again but without using that drum at all".
Wow you're the first to suggest practicing contingencies, which I think is a great idea if you have the time! I'd run them in my head (and some have actually come true) and hope for the best in the execution, haha.
I know this is an anime but I swear they put something in the water in Japan to create so many high level musicians. Especially with some of the female bands. I highly recommend checking out some of the live videos of Band-Maid to see a high level of skill in a live show, either their official or fan-cams. Official obviously has better sound but the fan-cams show how they are on stage without a lot of cut shots. The song Domination is a great one but I also think Play and Wonderland are also good examples.
I'll check them out! Someone was drawing similarities between their lead guitarist and Bocchi, and it's uncanny. I'm told that there's a culture of excellence with Japanese guitarists learning the instrument. The ability to play at a high technical level is also praised (whereas if I shred the same thing for my parents, they'd recoil in horror at the "noise" I was making).

back when i was playing music outside the church. my D string got busted. as we approach the 1st chorus. and i managed to recycle the same string (and tune it by ear and feel) by the end of the chorus. the whole Bar was cheering and screaming. and i didnt know that i can do that on the spot.
Photographers came to my side and started taking pictures. an awesome night for my Band. even the manager went and gave us Free Beers.
Nice recovery! The string break must have happened near the tuning post if you could rewind the same string with less windings, perhaps. You also have a very supportive audience. I've played places with death stares when things go wrong on stage!

the string break happened near the ball end. so i had to unstrip some of the nickel wound off the string then.. insert the unstripped part inside the ball then twist it real hard.

I am in my school band and a few months ago we had a performance, it was my first cause I just joined being a new grade 8. I had my friend with me who played keyboard. I played the bass for the song. Idk what it was maybe it was the nervousness but I started to not be able to hear what some of the peeps were playing and I wasn't very good so I sorta relied on the others a lot despite being a bass. So I got really lost but somehow, i sorta then pretended to play and stare at a few players around me and then I started to catch on again. Really scary but so very fun.
It’s 20% what’s actually being played and 80% how you play it-if you play a mistake confidently, people won’t really catch it! (I will because it’s my job to, haha). Thanks for sharing! I love this show, they nailed the experience of growing up as a music lover: going to your first real shows, bombing and learning how hard performing is. Love all the detail they put into gear.
The only thing that isn't accurate about this show is that highschool girls are writing/playing music with the taste and chops of professional musicians double their age. Makes for a good show though lol I will give them that
Haha that’s my gripe with the songs I’ve been watching on YT. Japanese kids must be so musically prodigious! I have heard that electric guitar is a commonplace instrument. I have a friend who teaches guitar there and he’s seen a whole hall full of young aspiring rockers!
While it sounds unrealistic. I still remember aboung all-highscholl girl band booming in Japan a decade ago.

Their culture encourages extra activity from young age to expand child talents and music is common (thanks to Yamaha). She discovered her daughter have perfect pitch from very young age from her piano class and later into Goto class after moved from city. And not like parents always forced their children to do music. Her daughter currently in Kendo club instead. (She had no knack of it but like Kendo)
Exposures to playing music since very young helped created more musical talents.

there were other similar moments with other bands. I've seen RHCP's John Frusciante broke the string, Flea filled for him and John continued without broken string
This video popped up in the sorta-random "you might like this" listing over on the side of the window, and 30 seconds in and I'm nodding my head going "Exactly how I feel and how I feed my Inner Guitarist™. " This guy *gets it*. :D :D
Ooh and good point about lines of sight and communication. We occasionally rearrange everything at the front of the sanctuary, and I'm careful to design the layout (and check as we put people and instruments where they go) the line of sight between the piano and the leader.
On the subject of supporting each other: Way the heck back when, we went and saw the first Young Messiah tour. At one point Phil Keaggy was supposed to have a fairly long and prominent guitar solo, but his rig just up and shut down on him. While he and his tech started scrambling, Phil Driscoll stepped into the gap and played Keaggy's guitar solo on the trumpet 'til Keaggy's tech got him working again. It was so seamless I dunno that anyone not familiar with the song they were playing even noticed.
My biggest "gear crisis" moments were broken strings, but I learned years ago to have two guitars on hand. That went by the boards for a while when I got the SY-1000 since I only had one GK-equipped guitar, but now that I got a GK on my second electric, I'm covered. The other big issue was always the 12string going out of tune as the a/c took hold over the course of the morning. That's another thing the SY-1000 bought me - a really good 12string sound without having to lug my 12 to church (or change guitars for that matter :) ).

That's one thing I haven't instilled in my worship team yet: not to panic when things go wrong. It's SUPER obvious when something is up, even as simple as a dying battery in a wireless mic.
Honestly its significantly cooler to me to face technical difficulties and improv or cover each other through it then to stop the whole song bc it takes alot of skill and awareness to do that
Agreed! As my band mentor once told me, "The show must go on! If you make a mistake, make it again so people think it's intentional."
It's important to know that in this anime, the animation is actually drawn over real performance for the music scenes, almost like old rotoscoping concepts. Being that it's a real performance, there's a lot of small details that would likely have been missed if it was just straight animation.
Nice! It's a great effort from the random off-tempo, often nonsensical hand positions in some animation.
You might call this an evolution of rotoscoping. Old rotoscoping just involved basically drawing over motion picture capture frames and then color over it with no adjustment whatsoever. It looks weird because of that. As I understand it, this technique uses reference frames from video, but the animators apply animation techniques to make it come alive so it looks correct from an animation sensibility.
@@Roxlimn yeah rotoscoping is definitely the most accurate term for what they're doing in it, but I'd agree - more of an evolution of it. It's extremely well done and honestly? Something I hope becomes common practice with detail oriented scenes like these.

Here's how that works.
Normally, in regular animation, the reference animators draw key frames and then animation frames are drawn linking those frames that create the movement effect. That's animation.
In rotoscoping, you literally just draw and color frames lifted directly from video capture.
In this technique, key frames are drawn based on video capture, but the animation process after that follows regular animation process. That's why it looks "right." Video frames are used as a reference to create key frames. Not drawn over. Just used as a reference and just for key frames.

I had the same situation as Bocchi but instead of a guitar it was on a piano. One of the key was not working during my recital performance in class, but luckily I made it through the end

On the topic of both guitarists using Gibson models, Bocchi replaces the broken les paul with a Yamaha in the finale so the music in season 2 should have a more dynamic sound going forward

this happened to my guitarist on high-school cultural fest... we tuned the guitar offstage and it was some 34°C outside... it was on tune... it was an old stratocaster that belonged to my friend's brother and was older than him.... we went into the stage and realised... the temperature just threw the tuning off... and also we didnt know how to tu e it on spot... so i just muted him and piano solo'd the gig... for the final song... we let him play solo guitar and didn't play other instruments
Temperature extremes are indeed tricky! I've played in cold amphitheatres that throw my double-locking guitar out of tune, and with no time to retune the instrument, I had to play Steve Vai style and depress the bridge ever-so-slightly to maintain the correct pitch.
Nice recovery strategy! Changing up the instrumentation and arrangement for songs can make for a varied live experience.

i remember back in high school, i was a guitar rhythm and a synthesizer software in laptop depends on what song we play. But when we played our last song and i should be using my guitar, the soundman tried to tell me that they can't turn on the sound line for my guitar but i didn't realized it at first. After my drummer start kicking the intro, that was when i realized my guitar doesn't work. My lead guitar took my part and he passed his fancy solo intro, i slid my guitar and put on my back and use synthesizer instead of using guitar. fortunately it didn't sound weird lol
Wow you're multi-talented, to play both synth and guitar! Well in some bands the synth and the lead guitar can kinda cross into each others' paths (Dream Theater and Arch Echo come to mind). Glad you had the ability to switch between instruments on the fly!

It was a little sad that we couldn't show people what we actually create and love. It was our last gig and our last song before we moved on for our own life. journey.

The best performance for this anime i believe was actually in episode 8 and second is episode 6. I think this performance more showed her skill but for some reason I didn't feel any emotional weight to it.

I know for a fact I didn't do any of the things mentioned here... If anything I couldn't keep my own tempo on songs, lol.
I definitely didn't look to make sure with my bandmates if we were doing things correctly, and all that haaaaaah ugh. I remember this distinct moment where we were at a retreat and people were trying to jive with the music
But, as I started getting into the song, I then started speeding up... It was pretty badly noticeable
But yeah, nothing wrong with youth groups and stuff while I was an agnostic kid going in for the hell of it. Fun people in the one I was in. (Yes, non-religious, non-catholic/Christian people can get into worship songs, sorta... Granted I'd rather get into something more like a machine girl song, or at the time I was in a youth group, Toriena and Fighter X (chiptune artists, though toriena's been doing electro dance songs with Moe Shop recently)
If I may encourage you, having some fluidity in tempo for some songs is ok, especially the older, more expressive Spirit songs (they were performed in a time when the metronome wasn't enforced in a band). Older Hillsong tunes also can't fit to a click, sometimes being halfway between metronome markings.
And further encouragement, youth group was where we all made mistakes, crashed and burnt, but that's where we learn to pick ourselves back up!

She has a STOP-TAIL BRIDGE on her Les Paul. The tuning problem factor should be on floating bridges.
Indeed, the tuning problem is worse on a floating bridge, but I think you still can't escape the problem of the neck experiencing a drop in tension which can cause it to go out of tune. I've had this issue happen on my LP before, especially with heavier gauge strings.

I’m kinda in-between the different generations of musicians. Old enough to remember cranking an amp and playing through wedge monitors, young enough to fully embrace in-ear monitoring and tracks through Ableton Live, haha.

Before knowing Jesus I was into the whole secular music scene, gigging and recording sessions, so I do know the “non-Christian” side of music. I miss it sometimes! Those late night gigs were some of the most amazing memories I’ve had.

Nope! What made this cooler was that the bassist and drummer exchanged nods at the tail end of the rhythm guitarist's solo as if to agree on repeating the section.
I don't know anything about guitar, so I was really confused when I saw that "playing slide" on the anime, is it like playing guitar as if it's a violin?
The frets on a guitar are the metal things in the neck that allow you to play different notes when you press down the string. Instead of using your fingers, you can use a slide, in this case the glass bottle, and rest it on the strings (not pushing down!) and it acts like a fret. Frets are stationary and you can only play a limited amount of notes with a fretted instrument. However, a slide allows you to "place" a fret wherever you want on the string, mimicking the function of a fret-less instrument, like the violin as you said,. The big thing this nets you are very cool "slide" effects that go through all the notes in the string, instead of just the ones delimited by the frets in the neck, and it also allows you to play near the bridge of the guitar, where you would usually not have frets.

It's mostly accurate.
I'm pretty sure they had people play their parts of the songs on video and the animators used that as reference.

I've tried searching him up just now and his technique is insane! If I may offer a very quick observation: his touch is very light, and so there's economy of motion to glide between notes and chords. It takes years to develop that touch sensitivity!

Bocchi is probably on the spectrum, and has difficulty interacting with people, but her artistic expression is strong enough to motivate her to try. Her drive to create and be heard is powerful, and gives her courage despite the fear.
I hear your recommendations, and I've bumped this to "must-watch" on my queue! It's super rare to see and hear accurate band animation (how many times have we cringed at what we see on screen isn't what we hear?).
