  • This is a commentated playthrough of Quake 2 for the PC, played through the 2023 re-release (KexQuake 2) sourceport on the Nightmare difficulty. All of the units will be played from a 'clean start', and all the kills and secrets will be demonstrated. In this video, I play Unit 9 - City.

Yeah, I think the railgun needs more oomph in the single player. It just feels wrong that an Icarus can take that many shots from it.

Feels like the rail gun from the PS1 version. They definitely need to buff it.

Rare footage of Dwars sieging a "city" to locate a functioning pizza cutter, cosplaying "I NEED MORE BOOLETS" guy at 1:34 and stealing Carmack's head

Dwars owns this city! Also, I forgot so much of Quake 2 that all I really remembered was the last unit where you need the commander head to open some doors.

The elite tanks are called tank commanders :)
Unit 9 is the one I remember the most, the game got genuinely pretty hard at this point... nice change of scenery too.

18:40 -- apparently, someone didn't get the memo from 1980 stating that Iron Maiden can't be sought, Iron Maiden can't be fought.
20:09 -- Dwars contemplates existence as a hermit crab.
Also, a friendly and unobtrusive reminder that you gotta disable and destroy the enemy communication laser.

The rail gun does 150 damage in single player and 100 in multiplayer in the original Quake 2. Now it does 100 on both. There’s a few patches on Nexus Mods that’ll add console commands to restore the vanilla railgun damage as well as some other things like monster behavior.

is there a mod that changes the railgun's charging sound back to normal? I swear to god they just have this obsession with changing the railgun for no reason

I saw that mod, and honestly, WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO CHANGE ANY OF THESE? the railgun damage i get (i also feel its a bit weak vs monsters), but why would you disable the advanced monster behavior that makes the game funner? Berserker jump is a tad OP, but it makes them an actual threat rather than harmless kittens.

@@JKRevanBRI agree. Back when I played the PS1 version they were a problem in tight spaces but if they are in open spaces they aren’t hard enemies at all. Very easy to deal with them there. The jump attack makes them a massive threat on bridges over lava with no way of getting back up. Makes you think twice about bum rushing bridges. That’s a great upgrade to a rather boring enemy.

    • @JKRevanBR

@@cwp24that was more due to console controls being shitty rather than the berserker being dangerous.

    • @cwp24
      @cwp24 10 месяцев назад

@@JKRevanBR yeah, that’s the only reason why they were. PS1s controls were awful especially the analog stick controls. Always preferred using the directional buttons to move and turn. The R1 and L1 buttons to look up and down. The R2 and L2 buttons to strafe. Honestly I wish the controls in the PS1 version were like the remaster. That would be a game changer.
The other reason why the PS1 version sometimes be considered as more difficult is the fact that every power up gets used immediately, there’s no power up inventory so you can’t save them. Which means you can’t fight makron with any power ups in the PS1 version making him way more dangerous compared to this version where you can just cheese him using power ups.

The secret area you tagged at 2:25 also has an adrenaline that you can reach by walking along the metal edge of the wall (visible at 2:30).

Unit 9 is such a long one maybe that's why kills and secrets are kinda annoying when it comes to backtracking and whatnot. Still, I do like this one regardless. Well, let's hope Railgun gets a fix for patch reasons.
