      So... We're not going to talk about Quake 2's ATROCIOUS weapons balancing? Ok then.
      Quake 2 had, purely damage stats wise, utterly anemic weapons. I don't think I've seen any other weapon sets in any id game be this weak when it came to their balance. Quake 1 weapons balancing was already a little questionable but still kinda good. Quake 2 though brought the damage stats down to new lows, ensuring that even basic enemies would take a million shots to the face before they went down, making them feel incredibly spongy and making every fight drag out way longer than they should have. The only weapons that seemed to have survived the Great Quake 2 Weapons Nerf was the chaingun (and even then, it consumes ammo like mad) and the BFG (endgame weapon).
      Now, in fairness, some people may really love this weak weapon balancing. Alright, to each their own, but I also really don't think it's fair to say that people who didn't like Quake 2 were just complaining about nothing. No, they definitely had something to complain about.

    as someone who loved both games growing up, my general understanding on why people didnt jell with Q2 all that much was the shift in tone and atmosphere. Q1 felt like you were a lone soldier fighting lovecraftian horrors and elder gods while jumping between realities and finding yourself in dark places that make no sense to the human mind. Q2 threw all that out the window for a more grounded experience and while it turned out great and was an awesome game, alot of people missed that dark and moody lovecraft aspect that made the first one so memorable.

The level art and designs look like the sci-fi levels, just with higher fidelity and saturation. I'll have to be on the lookout playing Q2 now, but it seems like maybe they just needed a few pacing and ambient changes that would've added some more survival horror elements after the landing mission, kind of like how Q3 did it (even if the game is way too slow at the start).

    It really is a fantastic package. The original Quake 2 had some rough edges that the remaster has buffed out, and the N64 campaign is great, if a bit short. Plus of course the new MachineGames campaign they've added is excellent. This is really exemplary remastering work, going above and beyond what is required.

    it was hilarious when you spawn them on top of a castle and after a brief fight jump to your doom seeing mid air that 2 or 3 of them decided to follow you, that's dedication

    Enemies jumping off of platforms, to get to the player’s level was in the original Quake. It was just *very* rare.
    The only spot I can think of off-hand is the hidden map in Episode 2 (the one with the Tim Willits secret room with the initials). You can get an Ogre and/or a Death Knight to hop down, in the first room after you go through the water pipe at the beginning.
    Wasn't much in the game, but the trigger was there in the editor. Oh, I think there were a couple of moments in Sandy Petersen’s stuff. The last two levels?
    I was one of the people who loved Quake 2, but hated that it ended up called Quake. Not because it meant the game was bad, but because they abandoned the lovecraftian / gothic horror and Reznor ambient aesthetic that I wanted in a new engine with more detail. Having this game be Quake 2 meant that the hopes for a more detailed Quake 1 universe, with more features, experiences and skills, were sort of dashed.

      Quake II "Wasn't Quake" IMO: Aight'. Still goes hard.

    • @SeanJMay
      @SeanJMay 10 месяцев назад +6

      @@labrat810 yeah, I’m not going to deny it was a great game, but I’ve been waiting a long, long, long time for a thematic successor to the first one; perhaps Dagon, or Cthulhu based, or one of the others in the original or extended Ancient / Eldritch mythos, except leaning a little harder into that, once the tech was understood, and some of the gaps were figured out (like solving the godawful .MDL issues, and fixing the affine texture issues, and adding coloured lighting and vis for translucent fluids).
      Also, you can say Quake II led to those things, but then Quake’s tech led to Quake II, and thematically, Q3A had little to do with either. They were all fun. But if they had different names, there would have been room for further growth of all of the concepts. Like, would Return to Castle Wolfenstein have existed, or the Wolfenstein reboot, if Doom was called Wolfenstein 2 and Doom II was called Wolfenstein 3 (or 4D and 5D)? I doubt it, sincerely.

    Man this takes me back to Highschool lol. That Quake 2 soundtrack frickin still slaps. It's weird people don't like this game cause I liked it much more than Quake. I thought it was so cool to see enemies duck rockets or still trying to kill you after you "kill" them, needing you to completely mulch them to stop em

    The 64 Quakes were my introduction, and 2 used the expansion pak and was like HD for the time against the other games of the system, and split screen mp was awesome. As long as you could use c buttons to move and the stick to aim, which made me a Southpaw gamer, you had a great control setup with D pad to select weapons.

    The problem with Q1 vs Q2 is just that - they are different games. I won't try to speak for any other person who criticized Q2, but I loved Eldritch horror atmosphere of Quake with enemies like knights, shamblers, fiends, spawns. Q2 just dismissed it all, it felt like a generic alien shooter. Then Q3 went multiplayer exclusive, and then Q4 is just Q2 but newer. And then there's Quake Wars. The entire series turned on its head and became this anti-strogg epic because of Q2, and Q1 became the odd one out. id basically forgot about that original vision and design for decades, up until Quake Champions, and it might not be a successful arena shooter, many dislike the hero/ability aspect, but its visual design, soundtrack, atmosphere and lore are precisely what I personally wanted all along. Q2 is not bad, it's one of the best FPS ever. it's just that because of Q2 I never got a sequel to Q1.

    • @kkarx
      @kkarx 10 месяцев назад

      I played both recently again and nowadays it seems to be vice versa. Q1 is just an incredibly boring generic shooter while Q2 is still exciting and in parts even quite interesting game. I have to give credit to the old school reviewer in the pc magazine who was right back then when he said that Q1 was just a generic shooter with excellent graphics. He dared to give the game rating 5/7. Big balls.

      @@kkarxI agree, q1( the base game) just felt pretty meh to me.
      The whole game just lacks direction, enemies are forgettable and not fun to fight, half of the weapons become useless once you pick up the super variants and the color pallette is just brown and gray.
      What I will gives to this props to this game for its expansion packs, ambience and atmosphere. I owe a lot of respect to this game but there are several other retro shooters that did everything quake did better.

    Having played Quake 1 and 2 back to back, I love both games. I like Quake 1 a little more because of its atmosphere and ambience, but there’s no denying Quake 2’s effective use of body horror and pumping music.
    Overall, it’s impressive how influential the Quake series was in FPS games. Without Quake, we probably wouldn’t have games like Star Wars: Jedi Knight or Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

    I have vivid memories of my kid brother playing Quake 2 on his Voodoo Banshee machine. I only had Voodoo 1 at that time (because I had upgraded earlier from a Matrox 2D card), so I was quite jealous how well it ran for him. Hardware moved so fast then.
    But yeah, Quake 2 did a lot of good stuff. The multiplayer maps became bigger and more ambitious, and there were fun gamemode additions like the grappling hook for CTF. And of course, the intro is hard to forget. I feel like The Expanse season 6 almost did an homage to it, the attack on the ring station and how Amos descended in his rocket chair. Very cinematic.
