When I was first exposed to quake speedruns it looked like magic, but what this channel has taught me that there's no magic, only insanity in the best way possible. Inspiring.
Can I just say, your channel is simply amazing. The time and effort you put into your research, production and delivery is just sublime. You have way too few subs for the quality of content you make, and I'd like to contribute what I can to ensure you keep going. Get a Patreon going! I'd definitely support you there!
Your channel will be a great addition to my list of video game dads telling bedtime stories to help me fall asleep. This is an honor only ascribed to the greats such as Decino, Ross Scott, Karl Jobst, and 2kliksphilip so far.
This is not a joke, but the finish of this video almost made me tear up a little bit. After first seeing Muti's reaction of when he messed it up, followed just 2 minutes after by the success of all his attempts, harvesting the fruit of all his efforts... I just say wow. All respect to Muti, incredibly well done and that's an understatement!
I get emotional and goosebumps to see that a game from 27 years ago still maintains a huge active community, with new players. Quake speedrunners, for me, are definitely the most skilled speedrunners out there
I love these videos. As someone who's never played Quake and generally isn't into speedrunning I normally find this type of stuff uninteresting. A lot of speedrunning content is very loud and obnoxious to me, but the laid-back and more reserved tone and production is great. You do such a good job of explaining the tricks and showing off the tech and mastery behind pulling them off. I also love how you always go through the history of the records showcased and the progression through the ages, these videos also feel like neat little history lessons on a niche part of gaming culture.
Can we just appreciate the insane attention to detail in the editing and production of these videos? Like, synchronization of video to audio for the intro music to start just as a grenade pops, the use of editing to drive home the storytelling... Like, it's just a lot
Man, you (unwillingly?) capture the pace, pitch, choice of words and overall vibe of documentaries and talk shows from the 1980s in a way that I haven't seen anywhere else on RUclips yet. Make what you want of it, but living in the past as I am, I find it wonderful.
Thank you for these videos, they’re great, even for a beginner player like myself. You manage to explain these near-impossible tricks so well. Keep being awesome!
Muty is a legend i still remember the highlight when he did the record and was happy, he is indeed one of the best Quake speedrunning players ever, and i can guarantee he is a good person also... a total and absolute legend :).
Thank you for another great video! I hope you have enough footage and motivation to keep making these for a long time. Also congrats to Muty for another sick achievement . It would've been great to see his live reaction on the final run as well!
Brother how do you only have 7k subscribers, what the hell these videos are awesome. I don't know a damn thing about quake but the lengths people go to to save a few frames is mind boggling
I remember watching downloaded demos of Quake clans in the '90s of their crazy moves and rocket and grenade jumps. I've played a LOT of Quake since 1996 and have burned out a 17 inch CRT from Quake and DOOM alone but the THOUSANDS of hours of Quake I have played is a joke compared to seeing what these Quake GODS can do. Not a day goes by where I don't think about all the fun I had playing Quake deathmatch on dialup on the Pentium 133 and later the Pentium 200MMX.
You and your channel deserves way more attention! Greetings from switzerland! Love your content! You have not postet for so long time… hope you enjoyed your hollydays!
I never got into speed running, but I absolutely loved the original server-side Threewave CTF on the single player maps. This was one of the best. edit: Loved the overlayed demo players from one camera angle, that really helped to illustrate the iterative nature and failed attempts. The most peculiar aspect to me was the "grenade timer" on the streamer's POV - reminds me of the old scripts we used to make for timers in Team Fortress - although those used audio cues, not a screen overlay.
Peter Horvath guy was really ahead of his time. Every time i see these old long standing records being broken, i always hope that the older speedrunners come back and set a new record.
I remember Peter telling me that he got the idea for his e1m3 zombie luring technique in a dream. It has been almost 11 years since my last demo. Just waiting to find the time to start speedrunning again.
Peter was one of those runners who, (like Nolan Pflug and maybe others), had a slow PC, and had to think "outside the box". But while having a good framerate is undoubtedly an advantage, there are also rare places where it can be a benefit (eg wind tunnels). I sometimes wonder if some of the crazy tricks he pulled off were a direct result of this.
I wanna learn all the movement tricks, it just looks so mesmerizing. When we played a ton of quake back in the day we just ran around shooting each other.
I've been playing Quake on and off since it was released and I like to think I've gotten quite good at it. These players are on another level though. It's like magic to me. The single-minded determination required to get to get a top time in this era is almost superhuman. I just don't know how they do it. I mean, you can explain it to me and I understand the concept, but the execution is mind boggling. I watch the replay and my eyes just glaze over and by the end of it I'm sat here wondering where the last 30 seconds of my life went.
@@quakespeedrunsexplained You are welcome. Your videos are always amazing and help me a lot to reduce stress after a hard day of work! Please keep posting them to keep me sane!
Just to comment on something minor which many people might have missed: *Peter's run* from 2005 ended on 22.8 seconds... Whereas *Muty's* from 2023 ended on... *21.7 ... !!* My point is... we're not talking about just knocking off *just a few tenths* of a second here... *It's AN ENTIRE second !! :O* .
Ah yep I guess I could have made more of a note of that. In quake we only count full-second improvements so it's kind of a given, but people outside the scene don't necessarily know this :)
Just thinking about stuff. I understand you love Quake. But consider doing Doom speedruns or essays about game related stuff. Really appreciate this channel.
All of Quake's greatest demos being conquered this year says to me that we're currently living in the greatest era of Quake speedrunning. Old games never die; their legend only grows until a new generation takes up the torch! 🔥
Can I ask a quick question about *WHEN exactly* in 2023 did Muty start *to ATTEMPT* speedrunning this ??? You said the record was set June 13. But when did Muty start doing it? It would have been cool to point that out, as it would have demonstrated to us *just HOW LONG* he strained himself !! :) Also, you were too quick to end this at the end... Why not theorize just a bit if a time of 20 is possible ?? Muty appears to think so as per his on-stream live headers... *And... YOU ?? :)* .
Thank you for another great video! I have to ask, how do you research the stories you tell? Do you interview the speedrunners themselves? And how did you get the demos for the failed attempts?
Fantastic video! Is it theoretically possible to do the run without the quad damage, just evading the death knights? That would seem like the last chance at improvement.
@@mygghunter you need to kill the first death knight for a section of wall to slide to the side, exposing the exit area. No killed death knight, no access to exit area.
Yeah exactly, you need to kill the first DK to open the final door. Taking the detour to the quad is faster than trying to kill it with normal damage, and ammo is an issue as well...
When I was first exposed to quake speedruns it looked like magic, but what this channel has taught me that there's no magic, only insanity in the best way possible. Inspiring.
Like magic, it's sleight of hand and repetition, but calling it magic is fine, looks the same to me 🤣

You have got to convince the Quake community to use astronaut and cosmonaut skins. Because these guys look like they're floating in zero gravity...

absolutely amazing
That 22 second run was next level. I mean, he wasn't even looking at the ogre, he just jumped. Absolute monster run!
That music is absolutely divine
I really enjoyed Muty's Quake grinds this past year, I went from knowing nothing about the game to seeing the game pushed to its limits.

I fucking love this channel.
Was it intentional to have the beat line up with the double ogre grenade boost at 0:14? Either way, amazing video as per usual.
haha yeah, I synced up the beat with the boost and the first camera movement. My small attempt to be cinematic ;)
Oh yeah here we go again!
Missed the LET'S FKIN GOOO moment 😂
Geat stuff as always Connor ❤

Lovely stuff.
I can't imagine how many attempts Peter made to get his original run. Assuming he was just going for it with no exact set up, probably a lot.
Yes, for its time it was an out-of-this-world trick (as were many of the tricks in Peter's runs!)
афигенчик, спасибо за видео
12:05 Ogre, and ogre, and ogre...
Thank you for the video!
Could you make one about the 4s improvement for E2M5. I don't even play the game but i love this.
