    In this video I break down the unit archetypes I look for when making a team comp for Maddening after having done 5 maddening runs.
    Generally you want a balanced team so you can adapt to different challenges on the map :)

    Love the vid ! I'm currently finishing my 2nd maddenig run, and I wanted to make Mauvier work. I put him on Martial Master with Erika, flashing art +4, avoid+15 and canter/damage. And I have to say, he is INCREDIBLY good. He one rounds every mages/mage knights/archer and, most importantly, every goddamn WK in their moms (which are amongst the worse enemies late game). He is extremly bulky (60HP, 28def (cap) and 30+ res), hits hard (23str/30mag + Erika, allowing him to compensate for the weird calculation of fist weapons' damage), always doubles thanks tho the fist, and quads slower and bulkier enemies, and, on top of that, has great utility thanks his A staff proficiency. Plus, Erika allows him to use magic weapons which are amazing thanks to his high magic stat. If you haven't tested him, you really should try. He is far better than Chloé at this role thanks to his bulk.
    Btw, could you make a video on Tonics ? I find them amazing late game : they are cheap (basically costing you 3 to 5k before any mission) and life saving, thanks to the fact that you can drink them before battle.

    Would love to hear your thoughts on heavy weapon usage next. Things like greataxe, greatlance, blade use and balancing useage of taking damage to do more damage

      Same ! I tried something weird on my 2nd maddening run : I put Micaiah's engraving (-3might, but +40avoid) on the Carnwenhan (heavy dagger) and gave it to Zelkov who has natural high build. It's a nice way to counteract the typical low damage avoid tank units do (that enemies ignore moreover) : you dodge tank really hard (adding Knife Precision from Leif that is extremely cheap) and hit like a truck on both player and enemy phase. It's a really nice way to make Zelkov work late game (he has terrible strenght as a Thief).

      I mostly just use them on Engage abilities like Lodestar Rush, attack is the only thing that matters for those so you want your strongest and heaviest weapons.
      You can also use them on tanks, like Louis for example, he is not gonna be attacking anything twice, but if you give him a heavy weapon he might have a chance at one-shotting weaker units.

    Roles:
    Seadall. He can dance if he wants to, and leave his fears behind. He can put Miciah on a Shielding Art, and if the enemy can't hit him then they're no enemy of mine.
    Byleth: Eyyo we hear you like dancers so we made a Dancer that can dance your dancer so your Dancer can dance the dancer that danced your Dancer. Unfortunately being the dancer that is danced by the Dancer danced by your dancer is exhausting, and so they can only dance the Dancer that dances your Dancer every so often.
    The rest of the time?
    Uh. Heal staffs. Probably.
    Corrin: Usually stands there with glazed eyes, staring into the fire like a psychopath. Once in a blue moon, they may use a heal or warp staff.
    Louis: Very good in his unique class Great Knight
    WK: Wyvern And/Or Wolf Knights. Based. Have immeasurable sex appeal. Will help you move, and will cosign an apartment with you. Will clear maps, remember your birthday, and text you "good morning" every day.
    Other units: Cringe. Mostly incels. Mostly die, poop their stinky baby diapers, stay home and touch themselves, and cry. ISHYGDDT.
    Mage Knight. Not based, yet not cringe. Exists in the liminal space between basedness and unbasedness. This is what Chaos Style is.
    Has night terrors about Dark Flier though.
    Berserker: Comes with the standard issue wheelbarrow required to lug around your enormous balls every time you use one. Just be careful, that girth is probably cancer, and you will probably die.

    Honestly, in my first run I’ve been going for player phase damage and not really running armor, going for avoid tanking instead. I think in a planned run, I’d actually base my team around ring pairings since I’m realizing a lot of the rings can be contested if you favor a role too much, but they also want a good wielder. I’m on chapter 15 realizing I don’t have any Qi Adept, which would be fine except I can’t use a guaranteed Bond Shield anymore.
    The issue with this idea is that you might lack magic users, and it also favors the endgame when you have all the rings.
    Final Comp probably has
    Two tanks: Ike, Roy
    Two to Five mages: Celica, Byleth (I think Byleth should be on Mystical for team building this way). Some other emblems with mystical buffs can work here like Marth or Sigurd. Micaiah with Thani also fits.
    Three to Five physical damage dealer: Marth, Sigurd, Leif, Lyn, Erika assuming those aren’t contested.
    Marth is your main dodge tank.
    Also lots of support from the likes of Lucina, Micaiah, Byleth, Corrin, and Lyn (thanks to doubles).

    Anna sage soren emblem with hold out and geosphere partnered with a high def S-bond ike emblem character with tikis +40 health regen skill gives you an invincible pair that buffs sorens AOE where the preferred target is anna for her low def and ike can shell up if theres mages afoot and soren can even retarget unfavorable encounters towards ike while anna is regaining the engage meter sending swathes of enemies into ikes player phase finisher. Rinse and repeat.

    I definitely run heavy on Sages without even including Ivy and Mageknight Jean. I'll have to look at Hortensia, she looks great on Sage. I ended up benching her on my Maddening playthrough as there was already a lot of staff coverage.

    I’m starting to warm up to the idea of a martial master for extra damage negation. It’s difficult to fit in with 12 deployment slots most of the time but Mauvier can be pretty good with it when he joins bc he comes with good str/mag and the class has a pretty low ish speed cap and that’s not his specialty so it works out. A chain guard and breaking with fists can be situationally useful, but I’m finding it difficult to put someone in martial master earlier, with the limited deployment slots we have

    I think terrain utility should also be an archetype to be considered on most teams. It's not necessary, but very helpful to have units that can alter terrain. Without DLC, you have Corrin and Roy. With DLC, you have Edelgard, Tiki, Soren, and Camilla.

    I don’t even know how i can not use general louie on my runs, im on my 3rd maddening run now and find that i keep coming back to him 😂 i do keep sigurd on him from start to finish so he can dive mages as he one shots them with his high str then just facetank everything else, which so far works out for my play style. Im so scared on doing a playthrough without a general. My ike user is always my offtank then i have a dodge wall, usually 3 units which just builds a wall at chokepoints while my army shoots their lasers from a safe distance.

    I really find it easier to run 4 damage carries/snowballers (2 of each type usually), 2 enemy phase units each for def res, and then fill the rest with supports. Running all damage is just asking to have certain units underperform.

    Interesting about having your tanks be backup units. I was using General Goldmary with a Greatlance. She wasn't doubling, but I was doing super heavy damage on enemy phase. She could wipe out ~3 enemies per round with Brionac since it had 1-2 range. She was able to tank magic damage from high health and Adaptability as well. And never being able to be broken means she can always counter.
    I liked Diamant for my second tank since he was able to consistently heal himself. He also had a good crit rate for when I needed it.
    I'm also surprised you don't have a crit character. Sometimes you just need a prayer or some Divine Pulse shenanigans to get through a single high health enemy. Panette saved my ass more times than I can count.

      Generals start getting one rounded by mages even with 17 res and 90 hp. General just isn't viable late game. I put my Loius general on Paladin and that was MUCH better. Basically just as strong against physical but not dying horribly to magic.

      I always keep my main tank away from mages. I pull them out with someone either high RES such as Ivy or Hortensia and then have a mobile unit such as Chloe swoop in and take them out.
      In the couple of times Goldmary did get hit, she was more than fine. High health and Adaptability meant she was only at like half health. And nothing physical could ever hurt her.

    The Leif paralouge is a major example of anti-air.

      If you don't want to warp the boss, you can use Warp to close in on those ballistas and wipe them no problem too. Lyn's Paralogue was way scarier for me, for fliers.

    I think there's a case for a dagger user archetype, you don't need lockpicks on thieves like in other games, but daggers are boss debuffing units essentially. Not absolutely necessary, but they're nice to have.

    I don't think the game was designed around Dire Thunder being available. I could see the Bond Ring abilities being added much later in the process without them realizing how exploitable it was to get it. There's nothing wrong with using it, but I don't think they'll do anything about it either.
    I'm doing a no Somniel run now and it almost feels like a different game. I actually miss forging the most so far through Chapter 17 on Maddening.

      After seeing Citrine as my MVP for 3 chapters straight, I’m cutting the dire thunder ring as she’s made the game too easy. Just completely melts fast enemy units that were clearly not meant to be doubled (wolf knights, sword masters, etc.) with such high damage attacks.
      It’s like having a 3 range Nova from chapter 8 onwards. Yes, you can’t quad, but tbh you’re not quadding a lot with nova as is.

    One I would add are the nukes like Panette and Amber(Halberdier, who I have personally grown fondly of recently) Brave Lance and Lance Power for Amber, Brave Axe plus Axe Power for Panette. These units are the nukes IMO

    How do you feel about Anna and thieves in maddening rn? I heard thieves fall off late game and apparently the new well can give you good money.

      Anna is the best mage by herself even without her passive. Thieves can still be really good dodge tanks but you do need Eirika for consistent damage late game.

      Thieves are just generally worse Wolf Knights, and require more fiddling to make them good.
      Anna is a solid mage, use her if you like her, ignore her personal skill.
      As you always should have done.

      @@aprinnyonbreak1290 yea I think I might replace my thief (who are usually corrin user) with goldmary and have her be a secondary rank. Corrin gives nice stuff for tanks like hp,res, and pair up which cancels chain attacks. I remember coffee did a video on her.

      @@aprinnyonbreak1290 I mean you’re trading access to swords and 1 extra movement with covert bonus. I’d say it’s definitely worth it. The main problem with thieves however is that its class skill unlocks way too late even for Yunaka and Zelkov. You definitely shouldn’t consider reclassing anyone else into thieves for dagger access.

    I only acknowledge three roles. Magic damage carry, physical damage carry, and Seadall.
    But seriously, more specific role needs are covered by emblem rings anyway. Bonded shield, and Ike on a damage carry is pretty much all the tanking you'll ever need. Even Roy, as well as Seadall's chain guard in a pinch, letting even glass cannons survive 2 combat phases is basically covering your off tank needs. Corrin, Byleth, and Micaiah can also all go on damage carries and provide all the utility you need

    Fliers are nice until the Lyn paralogue where there’s 1000 bow knights

      Flyers are still useful on that map to get through rivers to kill enemies guarding tents, preventing reinforcements from spawning when Lyn attacks.

      No need usually, more expensive than heal, heal is usually enough, new Well Staff is like a cheap mend with less MT than mend but more than heal :)
