  • The art of the paid game. Choose the right team and you get a relatively easy-tune-up game. Choose wrong and that upset lives on getting brought up year in and year out. The nightmare from that faithful day will be brought up by rival fans at every opportunity they can find. But why do these games even occur if they are supposed to be so uneven?

    One of the worst places to be as a college football program is to be in the purgatory of being too good for the buy games to not only get a better strength of schedule. But to go head to head with a staple Power program to see if you truly match up. In all honesty, it's why I love the buy game upsets more than anything else in football. The fragile ego of these schools in what they thought would be an automatic win is shattered in a billion pieces for all to see.

    My JMU Dukes over Virginia Tech in Lane Stadium in 2010, that's another one. We're up in the FBS now in the Sun Belt and we play App State and Georgia Southern every year. Funny thing is, we played Virginia last year after forty years of them ducking us (we'd just gone I-AA when we beat them in Charlottesville in 1982), beat them 36-35 in a real good comeback, and now they won't schedule us again and also VT has delayed a game with us from 2025 to 2026 and may be looking to get out of it completely. The ACC is flat-out telling their schools not to schedule Group of 5 schools as non-conference opponents, probably because it's too risky for an upset. It's getting harder to get money games if you're a *good* G5 program because the big schools don't want to risk losing. So they'll either play FCS schools or absolute cupcakes, or big non-conference P4 opponents that'll sell out a stadium.
    Also, don't forget the same year--the same SATURDAY in fact--that App State beat A&M, Marshall beat Notre Dame in South Bend and Georgia Southern beat Nebraska in Lincoln. All money games.

    Even though I grew up in Nebraska & am a MASSIVE Husker fan, I graduated from a small ELCA college in Sioux Falls, SD (Augustana). Augie was rivals with SDSU in the old North Central Conference (NCC) before SDSU & most of the rest of the conference moved up to FCS. The rivalry with SDSU was somewhat lopsided in football, due to Augie being significantly smaller than SDSU (1300 students compared to around 8,000). Therefore, I was THRILLED in 2010 to be able to get tickets when SDSU came to play Nebraska in Lincoln, since now I would be able to see SDSU get stomped by Nebraska, the same way SDSU used to do to Augie! Nebraska ended up winning by only 14 points, but at least they WON, which is something a few other Big 10/Big 12 teams can't say (since they have lost games to former NCC schools)!

I'd say they could put the MAC on the map or make great members of the MWC. I don't see the Big 10 making overtures to either NDSU or SDSU. • @BigBroKuma
      @BigBroKuma Месяц назад +1

      Respectfully disagree talent matters on defense and on the line. A good example is the OSU cowboys they played their hearts out last year they had multiple late game comebacks but in the Big 12 championship they got completely dominated because defensively they sucked not just talent wise but scheme wise as well despite Ollie Gordon playing like a rabbid dog. And the defense were playing like mad men even while being down 21. Its all XandOs with the combination of scheme especially in playoff/Championship games where the talent gap isn't that big. Thats why certain teams like Penn State and Ole Miss always lose to the contenders they get outschemed because they don't switch it up and rely on playing fast and raw passion by using simplified schemes. But that just ain't it. To summarise there's a lot that goes into the game pulling a Steven A Smith and blaming a loss on a "lack of motivation" is disrespectful to all the athletes that had to put their heart and soul into the game to even start for a D1 program let alone a power 5 school
