I tried a Zf with the 40mm kit lens over the weekend. The image quality was good, but I didn't like the implementation of auto-ISO, lack of buttons and joystick, and not being able to use the shutter dial for full stops along with selecting 1/3 stops via a control dial like Fujifilm allows. I also found the weight of the camera and kit lens were about as heavy as I would be willing to carry, and better quality Nikon glass would be much heavier. Also, the Nikon lenses don't have aperture rings, so if I want that experience, I need to adapt from from Sony e mount or use manual focus lenses. I think the camera is a good first step for Nikon, but it needs some refinement and more native lenses before I would buy one.
I just don’t understand people complaining about slow auto focus on fujifilm cameras. It’s 6 years behind Sony’s, unsuitable for professional or some nonsense like that. I wonder what professionals used 10 or 15 years ago. Personally I don’t care about latest and greatest. I take mostly photographs of my kids with “aging” X-Pro3 and can’t complain.
Because youtube videos like this earn clicks. The Fuji X-T1 worked fine for weddings, street etc years ago as well as today. These videos illuminate that better technology comes with price: Loss of skill and the illusion that top gear is needed for making pictures.
I feel Nikon really went after the Fuji/X-Pro3 users. Just like the X-Pro3, the Nikon ZF makes you want to shoot. Its image quality and bw mode is fantastic. I'm one of those switchers.
Get real. Any camera with a flippy screen is the exact opposite of a X-Pro3 - which is a stills first camera. The Zf is just another video-first camera for the masses that looks 'cool.' It is _not_ a street photo-first camera.
@@Mamo878 leica has a screen in their m11 models , a9iii has a screen in their pro photo models , the r1 has a screen in their pro photo models , pentax has a flippy screen in their models , olympus does as well as the g9.
The only thing keeping me from switching to the Nikon ZF is the fully articulating screen. I like the tilt screen configuration of the X-T and GFX cameras. If Nikon releases a ZF style with a tilt screen, I will probably leave Fujifilm. Nikon seems to have a business strategy, while Fujifilm keeps releasing cameras that are inconsistent in design.
Your point about tilt screen isn’t wrong. I also prefer that style myself. What I’ve found with my Zf is that the feature I do like is turning the screen inside for protection. I have the tilt screen Z6ii, but would adore the Z8 style in a Zf body. The flip out screen is not my favorite thing. I don’t take selfies and never shoot video.
Get an manual lens with contacts and check how nice it can be done on ZF. To get af box confirmation in mf is so simple yet so elegant way of speeding up manual focus process.
I really love both the the ZF and the x-t5, I really just prefer the organic image quality of the ZF as well as the great versatility for adapting lenses and manual focusing. However I do miss my x-t5 very often for it's size and ease of use
I just sold my ZF a week ago. Don't get me wrong, I loved the camera. It was so beautiful and the controls were so tactile and fun to use. But after a while, certain things started to annoy me: the camera was not made to be used, it was made to be looked at. The controls are so wrong, after a while you end up just turning the knobs off and be left with the two small dials, at least if you want to set things like auto iso, or set a precise exposure. Bad design, Especially compared to Fujifilm. I think it is much more probable that Fujifilm fixes their AF in the next model, but Nikon will never make a good user experience.
GEAR...GEAR...GEAR... Get this! Now switch to this! Oh, but now this brand grought out this; maybe consider switching again? And meanwhile yputubers make money from companies and people buying the latest and "greatest" oddly enough have little to show regarding actual photography! But that obvipusly doesnt matter anymore...they post photos of their gear on their social media! Pretty happy to.still use my 8yo fuji and pentax bodies. Now that everyone will switch again to the "Zf is the new Fuji" I'll be able to get inexpensive gear in the years to come! So, I guess.....thanks?
@nandysullivan3005 mad? No! Frustrated that I'm searching for "photography" channels and everything slowly turns into "electronic market"? Yes! Happy though that with all that hype around new gear I'll be able to get used stuff for a fraction of their worth in a few years? Also yes! Now, let's talk about you. What's your issue about someone expressing a different opinion? If you feel what's lacking in your skills is a new camera and that the- 2 year "old" one - is the reason that's holding you back...by all means, get the Zf or whichever "best camera ever"!
@@nandysullivan3005 yep. That's why I'm not a subscriber; it popped up in my menu. But there are other channels I have subscribed to and those give more room lately for gear related videos (a free haselboadt or at least a new iphone certainly helps) so there's my reason of frustration, should you be seeking for one.
I would expect the 18mm f1.4 on Fuji to give the same background separation as the Sony 28mm f2 because the equivalent focal length and aperture are the same.
@@cameraprepper7938 why not? Difference in sensor size is approximately one stop, hence the aperture would be equivalent with a lens one stop faster on the smaller sensor.
@@wjennekens It is still a shorter focal length ! It will never be the same, if it was the "same", then there would not be full frame sensors or larger !
@ That's not how equivalence works. Yes it's a shorter focal length but the aperture is also faster. There are numerous videos about this on RUclips and lot of discussions on the internet fora.
Wheh fuji fixes its autofocus Peoole will return yo fuji Another reason i have stayed with fuji is that the fuji community is wonderful..connected and passionate artists The nikon people are great too but thet are bit more tech focussed ...which funnily enough this video is leaning on that too Im an artist with a camera.
I have the Nikon 50mm and 85mm f1.8. they are incredibly sharp and the autofocus is lightning fast. I also have a Ricoh GR3x and micro 4/3 OM-1 plus lenses. The Nikon full frame is king in all metrics when it comes to image quality and low light ability.
I didnt try a zf nor am I willing to, but imho I dont think its on the same boat as the x pro line (I dont think any other camera is), as the xpro line seams to be (gladly) about the ovf use mainly and evf for specific situations, otherwise there is an intire universe of cameras out there. The zf, as great as it may be, must be on the radar for people with different preferencies, especially in a world growing full of screens. But I do agree with your opinion on fuji lenses, and I think making bigger lenses in order to resolve the 40mp sensor is a mistake and disrups the advantage of going aps instead of ff, after all its not going to be a couple of centimeters that will do the difference, at least for me
I’ve got a Fuji and Sony a7cr system and just added a Nikon ZF with one Z lens and the megadap adapter so I can use my Sigma i series and GM lenses. I sold all my Fuji lenses and bodies and just kept an xt30ii and 35mm f1.4 for its small size and unique rendering. It’s still hard to decide to take the Fuji out over the other two cameras given its poor AF, low light performance/image quality and even its build feel.
@ I’m sure it will, mine is with UPS already with tracking. What lenses are you hoping to use with it? I’ve got the sigma 20, 45, 65 and 85mm lenses, the Sony 35 GM and the Tamron 28-200. I’ve read it works fine with the Sony 35 and Sigma 45, 65 and 85 - think the 20mm might be too wide and cause the corners to smear though.
Excellent video and comparisons. I began my photography hobby with sony a6000. Great and light set up. Then I came across the Fujifilm X100V when it was new, before the whole internet craze over it, and fell in love with Fuji colors and how light and weather sealed the set up was. I sold all of my sony gear for Fujifilm XT4. I really like it, but only realized later that the set up is much heavier than I had expected...
I appreciate your point of view. Also for me a larger body feels better in my hands. I wish I could get on with smaller bodies like micro four thirds. But they just aren’t comfortable and I like the larger sensors. On the Z system I’ve been gravitating to wide fast primes. I’m very tempted by the Sony 24 f/1.4. But find the distortion on frame edges of my Z 24 f/1.8 means I’d probably prefer a Z version of the Nikon 28mm f/1.4.
How do you use your 24mm f/1.4? I flip between 24mm and 35mm when I’m expecting to be in tighter quarters and want to take photos of people. The 1.4 aperture appeals to me for darker interior shots on nights out. If I place a person on the side of the frame I have to be super careful of the distance between them and the camera.
@@adamaufdencamp5080 I use it when I need and when I am in the mood for using 24mm. I have 14, 21, 24, two 35, 50 1.0, 55, 65, two 85, 110 and 135mm to choose from, most often I use two Cameras, one with a wide angle Lens and an other with a short tele Lens and maybe a 3 Lens in the bag.
Hello Tudor, great video as usual, I have the X-T5 and xf 18mm f1.4, I am tired of missed focus and contemplating a switch to FF, do you recommend going to A7Cii + GM 24 f1.4 or the Zf + 24mm f1.8? Will the nikkir Z 24mm f1.8 give me better DOF than the xf 18mm f1.4?
Do you know what you are talking about !? DOF = Depth of Field is deeper with a 18mm Lens ! The Sony 24mm 1.4 GM are the best performing 24mm Lens you can get, no matter which brand. Try a Sony A7RIIIA (42 megapixel) which is cheaper than both a Sony A7IV and A7CII !
Yes, I agree with the missed focus. And yes, you'll have a better subject to background separation with 24mm f1.8 or 1.4 on full frame. Both choices are good. Also I agree with Sony a7riiia just that it will not focus ok with third party lenses. Go for Nikon Zf if you want good colors - you'll not miss Fuji jpegs like this. Also Sony a7cii it's very good - but Sony jpegs :( other than that you can't go wrong with either package and the results will be better than 18mm f1.4 100% 👍
Ooh…you might regret giving up that 18mm lens. It’s probably one of Fuji’s best lenses. Fuji will fix the AF issues, but not so that the X-T5 is as good as a Sony or Nikon, but only you can judge if that’s enough for you.
Yawn If you're into street photography just use a cheap manual focus lens and zone focusing. Then it just doesn't matter _at all_ about nit-picking to death about auto-focus. Such a tired discussion at this point.
Agree… its kinda contradictory for street photography to talk about gears all the time. “This camera is better than that camera!” Next it will go “Why I ditched this camera for that camera” and then “Gears dont matter in street photography yadda yadda” rinse and repeat
In u perspective yeah make sense , but don't u think he not just using camera for street photography he maybe using for family photo or some event sometimes realibe af make you life easy , different people have different need just try to be open minded😊😊
I would give the EDGE to Fujifilm - the 35mm f1.4 is very good (but it will not focus like the 40mm z)... I need to test it regarding IQ... But they have different focal lengths. For sure it will be an interesting test... But IQ wise and rendering I do prefer the 35mm f1.4 (and it's small - this why I hadn't bought the 33mm).
Mulțumesc pentru efort. It's good to know that the Nikon AF is working as good (big improvement from the first gen. Z cameras). I think I will go down the Nikon Z line but not to replace my Olympus OM-1 (will keep it for Macro and Wildlife) but to be my main setup for dog/pet portraits and pet action shots. Just need to wait a bit for the prices to come down to sub 2.000 £ Nikon Z camera that can shoot 20 FPS RAW for action and pair it with the wonderful Tamron f 2.8 holy trinity.
I agree with everything you said Tudor but that doesn’t surprise me since as I said before, we have very similar taste. I agree, especially that the Nikon ZF would be the perfect camera if it had a tilt screen! I remember thinking that it wouldn’t work for me because of that and because of the weight, but as you mentioned, the weight is very well balanced with the lenses. I’m so happy that you got this camera and can experience the joy that I have! I still keep my Fujifilm X - E2 and some lenses but mainly my CF is number one ☝️. Thanks!
Sure you can switch to Nikon, then you have to live wihout the wonderful Fuji colors. Nikon colors are far behind. Those weight and size comparisions are pointless. "Why I switched to XYZ" - it is mainly consumer- driven. People want something new and shiny all the time. Fuji cameras are fantastic. Those AF issues (continuous/ video) are real, but I have shot several thousands of photos with Fuji cameras over the years, not a problem.
The Zf is not a real retro camera. It has a PASM mode dial. When you turn it to Av mode, the shutter speed dial loses its function even when it’s pointing at 1/250sec.
There is no need to change just for the AF system. It is not going to be like that forever; there are upcoming firmwares. I have official talk with a friend of mine who works at the Fujifilm Turkey in istanbul. He says this time fujifilm concerns about this problem so much. They have been working on it to make it as best as possible they can. On the other hand your camera is a fantastic camera. It is great camera for street. It is full frame so that's why I dont want to compare it with Fujifilm X T5. But, It is heavy camera and when you buy the other lenses it becomes really heavier than X T5. IN fujifilm system, I have more options than Nikon Zf. I love to shoot architecture and I have 8 mm fujifilm lens. I indeed have more lens option and they are at least more or less affordable. If Fujifilm makes full frame then the cameras will be more heavier and fujifilm aims to make more affordable and less heavy cameras. Thats what they stand for. Yet, you will enjoy shooting in the low light conditions with this camera. Overall, Nikon zf is fantastic camera yet, I want to tell people that do not change your fujifilm camera because of AF, near future they will fix it. I used to have battery problems with my X T 2O, I hated the battery performance. But now, XT 5 has a great battery. The app of Fujifilm was so bad in the past years. It is the first time I am using app of fujifilm. İt is great. Technological things will be improved so do not matter this too much. I am saying to this to all photographers. Your camera is always the best camera.
Ok you are telling me that Fuji cameras IQ depends on the len it is using. That is very inconsistent. This is very contradictory to many Fuji fanboys which say they have the best IQ. Thanks I really like this kind of criticism unlike other videos that just ignore the fact that Fuji cameras have many issues. I’m really glad I didn’t fall in the hype and didn’t invest on Fuji system
All cameras of the past 10 years are pretty good for everything you need. "Hype"? Everything is a hype...including the "Zf hype"! That's how RUclipsRS (and the companies backing them) make MONEY!
@@XXX-vy6xv I agree but I see more fanboys and hype in Fuji than any other brand. Their cameras second hand market prices is a proof of that. And it’s not like they are luxury items to pay for
@kicyiu true. And the reason for that is exactly the YT hype that started 3-4 years ago (I was lucky enough to get mine as part of a bundle just before that and I can confirm that prices people pay for a Fuji now are not representing their value. On the other hand you can find great deals on DSLR stuff for peanuts since noone's interested in those dinosaurs anymore.
All the world complains about the AF being bad of Fujifilm. But in genral I find the focus aqcuisition on the eyes more exact than that of Nikon! In stills at least.
It's not really overreacting(issues happened all xtran5 camera) .... It's more like disappointment... i sold my XT5 3 weeks ago... I've been getting disappointment updates over and over again.... The untrusible subject detection/ AFC focus box, seeing photos off focus on larger display after got home... and also think they might have to change their lens motor design for better adjustment......
For me it’s the feel in hand of the build, IQ and low light and adapted lens choices, especially the low light due to the lower pxl count. Film sims and ergo don’t count vs the ability to shoot more often after work. xt5 is great but zf is better images and more often
@KeenAesthetic1 maybe get a second body? XT30ii/x100F/V or gr3 for everyday carry 🤔 I'm planning to get one of above smaller camera for everyday carry🤔.... nikon body + lens are heavy.....😵💫

Agree. They based it on a retro design but forgot that the modern camera is much heavier. Hence uncomfortable to hold for long periods.
Canon has passed its prime for so long, and Nikon is returning amazingly from the forgotten realm since mirrorless dominant the market
Why so mad😂
@nandysullivan3005 mad? No! Frustrated that I'm searching for "photography" channels and everything slowly turns into "electronic market"? Yes!
Happy though that with all that hype around new gear I'll be able to get used stuff for a fraction of their worth in a few years? Also yes!
Now, let's talk about you. What's your issue about someone expressing a different opinion? If you feel what's lacking in your skills is a new camera and that the- 2 year "old" one - is the reason that's holding you back...by all means, get the Zf or whichever "best camera ever"!
@@XXX-vy6xv I mean, this channel is mostly about camera gear. Just look at the videos-most of them are just talking about camera gear. 😅"
This was a really smart and thorough overview!!!
I made this switch 6 months ago and I’m selling the ZF and going back to Fuji. I’ve never liked a camera less than the ZF.
I would expect the 18mm f1.4 on Fuji to give the same background separation as the Sony 28mm f2 because the equivalent focal length and aperture are the same.
Do not expect that.
I try the zf is very heavy in hand ... There is very low number of prime that why Nikon doesn't open to sigma and create prime at 700 USD 1.4
I was so surprised of ye sound of he shutter - it 's better to take Sony a7c2 for the size if you go to full frame with more lenses
My Fuji gfx 50r with the gf45 f2.8 smashes any full frame camera for image quality
Gfx cameras image quality is another level
I agree, I have a GFX as well I have no desire for any other camera. It makes me sad because I no longer play with the XT4 and XH2 as much.
Fair and balanced with actual images captured to help tell the story - chef's kiss my friend! 👌
I have an XT-4 and its fantastic.
Wheh fuji fixes its autofocus
Peoole will return yo fuji
Another reason i have stayed with fuji is that the fuji community is wonderful..connected and passionate artists
The nikon people are great too but thet are bit more tech focussed ...which funnily enough this video is leaning on that too
Im an artist with a camera.
How the Sony lenses work on Nikon Zf with the megadap?
@ the adapter is on its way from Hong Kong to Australia so I’ll let you know when it arrives in about a week!
@@anthonystonehouse I've just ordered mine 🤣 I hope it will deliver 😁
Exactly 😁
I appreciate your point of view. Also for me a larger body feels better in my hands. I wish I could get on with smaller bodies like micro four thirds. But they just aren’t comfortable and I like the larger sensors. On the Z system I’ve been gravitating to wide fast primes. I’m very tempted by the Sony 24 f/1.4. But find the distortion on frame edges of my Z 24 f/1.8 means I’d probably prefer a Z version of the Nikon 28mm f/1.4.
I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, it is the best 24mm you can get, no matter which brand !
Yawn
If you're into street photography just use a cheap manual focus lens and zone focusing.
Would xf 35mm f1.4 be a good comparison with the z40mm f2? I understand it's not the same, but quality-wise would be more comparable?
I would give the EDGE to Fujifilm - the 35mm f1.4 is very good (but it will not focus like the 40mm z)... I need to test it regarding IQ... But they have different focal lengths. For sure it will be an interesting test... But IQ wise and rendering I do prefer the 35mm f1.4 (and it's small - this why I hadn't bought the 33mm).
Great review Tudor. I agree with your opinion on the ‘consistency’ of the Z system. Definitely a consideration.
ZF is Mental.
Yesss!
Voigtlander not viltrox and f1.2 not f2 :) Just the equivalent depth of field.
And now with Fujifilm annoucing the development of a cinema camera...
I'm already back to my xt-5
I agree with everything you said Tudor but that doesn’t surprise me since as I said before, we have very similar taste. I agree, especially that the Nikon ZF would be the perfect camera if it had a tilt screen! I remember thinking that it wouldn’t work for me because of that and because of the weight, but as you mentioned, the weight is very well balanced with the lenses. I’m so happy that you got this camera and can experience the joy that I have! I still keep my Fujifilm X - E2 and some lenses but mainly my CF is number one ☝️. Thanks!
Yes, Fujifilm X-e2 is great - it's a mini Xpro2
Sure you can switch to Nikon, then you have to live wihout the wonderful Fuji colors. Nikon colors are far behind. Those weight and size comparisions are pointless. "Why I switched to XYZ" - it is mainly consumer- driven. People want something new and shiny all the time. Fuji cameras are fantastic. Those AF issues (continuous/ video) are real, but I have shot several thousands of photos with Fuji cameras over the years, not a problem.
Colour's just prefence
I ain't switching cause I have switch disease.
The Zf is not a real retro camera. It has a PASM mode dial. When you turn it to Av mode, the shutter speed dial loses its function even when it’s pointing at 1/250sec.
Do not follow the "internet" hype ! Follow your own guts and sense !
Cause fuji hype make me by the camera Damm
I think IQ relies on lens quality. My XH2 IQ is way better with the Viltrox 75mm Pro than with some of the older Fuji lenses.
Video AF comparison at 31:17
All the world complains about the AF being bad of Fujifilm. But in genral I find the focus aqcuisition on the eyes more exact than that of Nikon! In stills at least.
U will see the box lock on in the eyes and get green box but the final pictures not get eyes every times it's just like gamble
For me im using single autofocus and tap screen to focus easy fast and more accurate than using eye af
I can see a pattern of Fuji hatred blaming auto focus. Same is happening with GoPro People need to calm down and stop over reacting.
XT30ii/x100F/V or gr3 for everyday carry 🤔
I'm planning to get one of above smaller camera for everyday carry🤔.... nikon body + lens are heavy.....😵💫
