Whatever system I have, I like to have a 24, 35, and 50 full frame equivalent. So for me, it’s the 16/2.8, 23/2, and 35/2. I love the form factor of those lenses.
I bought the xf60 as a poor man's 56. I eventually bought the 56 and was amazed at how much I preferred the 60. It has some pop and magic the 56 is missing. I only really reach for the 56 if I know the light will be limited. Not for everybody but if you can get your hands on a copy it's well worth a spin. Love that 35f2, so small. Barely counts as bringing an extra lens with you, especially if you ask your wife to pop it in her handbag...
Never had the opportunity to try the 60mm but I love the form factor of all these older XF lenses, I wish Fujifilm would release some bright but compact primes albeit at the expense of corner sharpness😅 So the 35mm f/2 is not yours but your wife's daily carry I guess😂
Excellent vid. Always interested to hear opinions on how the larger lenses (e.g. 56mm) handle on the smaller bodies since I have an X-T50 and most youtube content creators speak from experience using the larger X-T5 type bodies.
Thanks so much Duncan!☺️ Yeah I love Fuji's double digit X-T cameras so I also inform my audience how they handle bigger lenses. And I'd argue it works, especially if you add a tiny hand grip to it as I did :)
Had the 18 f1.4 and the 18 f2…..sold the f1.4…..love the f2,small,compact,great image quality and unless you shoot sports the autofocus is perfectly fine….get the f2 and save some money would be my advice….
Thanks for your comment Martin! I like your point and I think the old 18mm f/2 still has a place! The reason why I go for the f/1.4 is weather sealing and it's stellar sharpness giving me room to crop which is important for my work! But you encourage me to try out that 18mm f/2, I'll pick up a copy once I find a good deal!😉
Great combo! The Viltrox lenses are the best optics I own... the reason why they did not show up in this video is because of their size!😅 That's where the Nikon combo wins😉
I use the newest 23mm 1.4 and the 90mm 2.0. For the 50mm to 70mm range I use an m42 mount adapter and a bunch of vintage lenses. I am quite happy with that approach. Edit: Camera is xt5
@ Yes, there are some nice vintage lens options that are a bargain and work well with the film simulations. I really enjoy the 23mm! It’s extremely sharp and has a very near close focus point. I also like the 35mm equivalent focal length, since it is nice for a documentary photo/video style. You can fit some of the surroundings of an subject into the frame. However, it is quite expensive and if you have a 18mm, it might not be worth it.
@@pithaupertI just uploaded a little demo for both with straight out of the camera jpegs on my channel. Just some basic shots from a trip to Australia to showcase some real world examples.
@@blissorordeal Yeah these are my thoughts too.. I essentially shoot the 18mm like an 23mm with some bonus focal length at the wide end. And as you say, having both is not worth it, given the price and the overlap. Thanks for watching!☺
Thank you so so much Sam! For my gear reviews I really try not to read out the spec sheet and instead show what one can create with them. I'm really happy that's appreciated!😊 Thanks for watching and glad we align😉
I have to agree with you on your choice of lenses. I own the 18 1.4 and also the 56 1.2. I’ve had both versions of the 56, so I can tell you that the new one is faster on the auto focus and if you use limit focus, it’s even faster. Try 6 feet to infinity. As my third lens, I would pick the 50 F2. The reason is when I’m doing street photography and photographing people in a fairly close range, this gives me a little wider perspective than the 56 and the bokeh is usually just right for background effect, at wide open.
Thanks for your comment Simon!☺️ Since I never tested the 56mm gen 1, I am glad to hear they still improved autofocus! I also own the 50mm f/2 as my more discreet street photography lens... it's just a vastly different lens for different people but I love it for what it is!☺️
I carry the 18mm 1.4 and the 33mm 1.4 in my sling bag as my daily drivers with the 18mm being glued to my XT5 about 80 percent of the time. I think it’s their best lens easily.
From the thumbnail alone I recognize my favourite lens from the Fuji lineup, that 56mm is a beauty. My two lenses that stay in the bag are obviously the 56mm f1.2, and Viltrox’s 27mm f1.2. With the 27mm being (basically) half of the 56mm, both are extremely sharp, weather resistant, f/1.2 and both use a 67mm filter thread, these two lenses are a perfect duo for me. I haven’t tested tried the 18mm yet but I have been keen recently for a wider lens. I’ve also been considering Viltrox’s 75mm, you have a great selection of lenses! Great video!!
Glad we both agree the 56mm is an absolute beauty! I love the 27mm too but in a two lens setup it is a bit too tight for my personal work! You made a good point about the filter thread issue, I do not use a lot of filters but being able to fit the same ND filters to both lenses would be sweet! Tamron, for instance, hasn't released a single lens that does not have a 67mm filter thread showing that it is possible! It's also annoying that Fujis 18mm takes different filters than their 23mm and 33mm... that's a bummer😅 The 75mm is great but the focal length more restrictive than the 56mm! Thanks for watching my friend!
@ I don’t use a ton of different filters myself either, however, I do live in a place where it’s VERY sunny almost all the time, so I do need a ND if I want to use the wide aperture. I bought the swift VND from Nisi, so having a high quality VND that I can quickly slap on a black mist whenever and having fit both lenses is perfect for me. Filters to me, are those things that you don’t really use much, but when you do, you don’t want to spend a lens-worth amount of money on them lol. I want to try Tamron so bad! But they don’t have a lens I want to buy just yet. I’m not into zooms for Fuji, the only exceptions are the 70-300mm which I love, which is also 67mm lol, and the 150-600mm. I definitely will rent the 18mm 1.4, see how it works for me. Also, saw that this is your 9th vid! Loved your other videos as well. Immediately subscribed!!
Yeah a uniform filter thread is amazing! I use step up rings for my videos depending on what lens I use... but you have to install the adapter which is annoying and you cannot fit lens hoods anymore... it works but given it's fiddly and I'm lazy I usually just stop down my lens to get the shutter right haha I owned the Fuji 70-300! Stunningly sharp lens but it deserved an owner who actually gets it through its paces which sadly wasn't me🥲 Thanks for your kind words and for supporting my channel, it's truly truly appreciated!☺️
I will definitely give it a try, it's not the first time it's explicitly mentioned under one of my videos. The comment section is trying to tell me something!😉 Thanks for watching!
Thanks man! The Viltrox is the sharper lens of the two and it has softer bokeh. The only character element of the Viltrox 75mm is the swirly bokeh in the corners. May I forward you to my video "The best Fujifilm lenses are not made by Fujifilm"? I provide a few sample pictures and a cross comparison between both. 😉
When you recommend 18mm len as you can conveniently crop in, do you find you are losing quality since it is only APSC len? i use Sony APSC camera, and have fear in cropping in my photos. 😢
My two would be the 23mm 1.4 LM and the 56mm 1.2 wr. Excellent video and your point about the inconsistent aperture rings is my experience also. If I could only have one lens it would be a 28mm equivalent.
I'd love to try the 23mm f/1.4! But I know if I had both, the 23mm and the 18mm, one would be collecting dust on the shelf!😅 The thing about the 18mm's aperture ring is that it is consistently loose on all the copies I have heard about. 23mm has a stiffer one, is that right?
@ gotcha. I’ve got quite a few myself and can’t say I’ve had a lens that was so loose it was a problem. Interesting that one of the more premium lenses has an issue like that.
Two very good prime focal length ! One of my old mentors always said, if you have a wide angle prime Lens and a short tele prime Lens, then you can cover up to 95% of most photography !
Your photography mentor is absolutely right! That was my mindset too for the setup I presented!☺️ IMO, the 18mm and 56mm open two vastly different worlds of perspective making it easier to choose in the field as compared to having four lenses to pick from which would probably leave me paralysed haha
With me it‘s difficult! It depends on my current photography genre. With street 18mm (GRIII) and xf35mm/f2 or 27mm/2.8-pancake(X-E2). Portrait: xf50/f1 and Viltrox 85mm/f1.8. Travel: Tamron 11-20/f2.8 and xf16-80/f4. Wildlife: xf16-80/f4 and xf70-300+TC1.4. Macro: Laowa 65/f2.8 and xf16-80/f4. Nightsky: Samyang 12/f2 and Sigma 16/1.4. If not mentioned differently I use my the lenses with two bodies (X-T2 &X-T4). 😂❤
Damn, that's a mouth full haha I'm happy to see my tiny 35mm mentioned ;) Do you use the Samyang AF or the MF? Heard it wouldn't cooperate well with Fuji's IBIS. Is that still a thing?😅
100% agreed on the first two. But If I had those first two lenses, I would have opted for the 33mm 1.4. If weight is the absolute consideration, then yes, the 35mm f/2 it is.
Yeah I think the 33mm is the best nifty fifty in Fujifilm's lineup but I would give up the 35mm f/2's form factor that I love! Additionally, I find the f/2 sufficient, both for subject separation and low light, but that is very personal!😊
I really enjoyed the 18 + 56 as a pairing. The new 56 not so much on my x-t5. The AF is barely better than the old lens which was half the price, and on the x-t5 that lens feels better than ever. It's really enjoyable because it still looks good and it feels great value for money. Also the new one has a stupid design flaw that you can't change the aperture with the hood reversed mounted. It's get the sigma in a heartbeat if it had an aperture ring. For now I jump from 35mm to the Viltroxes 75 or 90mm F2. There's a gap waiting to be filled that's for sure.
Yeah I don't know what Fujifilm did to make these older lenses work so well on newer cameras! As you say, the old 56mm still has so much to go for it, especially for its much lower price and size! The reason why I had to go with the newer one is because I cannot live without weather sealing!🙈
Unpopular opinion regarding the Viltrox 75mm vs the Fuji 90mm but it's hard to justify the latter at double the price and not even half the light gathering capability. I have not tried the 90mm but I cannot even imagine it to be sharper since the Viltrox lenses are the sharpest lenses I own
@@pithaupert oh the 90mm is better in so many ways than the 75. It may be longer, so harder to live with in some situations, but I find the situations where 90 is too long, so too is the 75. But the far superior AF, smaller size and closer focussing makes it so much more versatile - sports, travel, wildlife and nature, portraits. Whereas the 75 I really treat as portraits nearly only. The rendering of the 90 is more pleasant (subjective I know), with smoother transitions and images just pop a bit more. Both sharp lenses, and from F2 the viltrox compares well to the 90. I would say the 90 edges it, but it's tight enough not to matter. But the 90 offers the full beans from wide open, no cats eye bokeh or onion rings, hardly any flaring or ghosting the Viktrox offers in spades. I'd sum it up that the Viltrox offers low light, a slightly easier to live with FL, and character (abberations, but they really do add to the charm). The 90 the more well rounded, dependable, versatile package for the best IQ you'll get out of any prime on the mount this side of a 200mm F2. But one day I think I will have to choose between them. That will be a tough decision, I do like both. Oh, my Fuji 90mm cost less than my Viltrox.
@@brownbear100 Thanks for the overview! Take my thoughts with a grain of salt, as I haven't tested the 90mm f/2. That said, I have some takes on sharpness and autofocus. The Viltrox 75mm is the sharpest lens I own, outpacing my 56mm f/1.2, with its closest rival being Viltrox's 27mm. Even if the 90mm is sharper (which would be remarkable), the Viltrox's advantage in stopping down reduces vignette and catseye effects, which might matter to some. I've shot demanding sports events with the Viltrox and noticed two key things: first, misfocusing often came from the camera losing or mis-tracking the subject-something no linear motor could fix, the Viltrox performs flawlessly on Sony. Second, the difference between f/1.2 and f/2 is huge. I shot a sports event at ISO 1600 with the Viltrox compared to ISO 4000 with the 90mm. This is significant for cropping and client delivery (I avoid denoising 500 photos unless necessary). I'm not knocking the 90mm but highlighting the Viltrox's strengths-it might help with your decision ;)
nice video, 2 lenses for Fujifilm for me a 23mm F/1.4 & 56mm F/1.2 ( or 1.4) In fairness my Fuji X100 VI is my go to camera for almost everything however and that has a fixed 23mm F/2 I say F/1.2 or F/1.4 for the 56mm simple because the F/1.4 from sigma (and I imagine others) get you 90% of the fuji 56mm F1/2 R WR for less than half the cost... you can get the 23mm and 56mm DC DN fr less than the the Fuji 56mm If money is no object get the Fuji for those small benefits, but when printed and after editing, clients wont pay more for your photos because your lens cost more if they are happy with the outcome. but for none professional use, where you don't have to justify the expenditure, get whatever your budget allows :) But I'm not a fan of the 18mm focal length... just too wide for me. If i could have 1 lens forever only i'd get the 33mm F/1.4. In all seriousness, my setup is a 3 lens setup for XF the 10-24 F/4 (mostly used for video) used when videoing groups where everyone needs to be in focus and at F/4 pretty much everything from 1 meter to infinity is in focus so no need to worry about autofocus the 23mm & 56mm for portraiture
I like your combo a lot! I agree that 23mm is arguably easier to compose than 18mm but I cannot own both since one would unavoidably collect dust on the shelf. So I went for the 18mm as I can always crop tighter while the 23mm cannot go wider, especially when taking a step back is not possible. But I do like the idea of a 23mm/56mm combo as it would reduce the awkward gap between 18mm and 56mm that would understandably bother some. That's why I added the 35mm f/2 to fill the gap... ...at the expense of a two lens setup though. I perfectly share your thoughts on the fact that the Sigmas give you 90% of what the Fujis do at a much lower cost. I would never have sold the Sigma 56mm if it wasn't for the addition of weather sealing that is incremental to my work. The 33mm I could never really justify as I mostly shoot on both extremes of a standard zoom. The occasions where I would shoot in the middle, the tiny 35mm f/2 does so so well! I have tried the 33mm and it is the best for those who like the "middle ground." Thanks so much for watching and the great comment!☺️
@@pithaupertI have the Sigma and have never really connected with it. Just bought the 50 f2 and noticed immediate Fuji magic. I may stick with the f2 trio for a season just to encourage me to take them with me more often.
@@garends225 I can really relate! Optics and light-gathering capabilities are one side of the balance. However, user experience is the other side: the fully metal built, the clicky aperture ring and the weather sealing. That is why I would personally choose the Fuji f/2 primes over the Sigmas. But of course it is all about priorities: user experience, bang for the buck and value for money. If you prioritise the latter two, the Sigmas are arguably the better deal!
Sure those lenses perform well and are sharp. But they are too big in my opinion. We all fell in love with Fujifilm’s 18mm f2 and 35mm f1.4 and after that the f2 lineup gave us all we needed for portability and weather resistance. I would make an exception for the 56mm regardless of the size. If it is for pixel peeping then all the other brands will do just as a good job…
I agree with you that all I do could be equally as well done with f/2 primes. But the f/1.4 lenses give me cleaner results in low light and some more cropping flexibility especially useful if you shoot on two lens setups like I do. Additionally, I would immediately buy into the 18mm f/2 if it was weathersealed but sadly it is not /: I hope for a weathersealed gen2! Thanks for watching!☺️
I use lens hoods mostly to cover the front glass element from rain! I bought a metal JJC lens hood for my XF 18mm but found it to make the lens too front heavy to I leave it at home mostly😅
Full frame lenses are so expensive... Me rocking the tiny Sony 28mm f2 which is equivalent to an 18mm f1.4 apsc lens. Cost used €200. 😂 For €1300 the Sigma 28-45 f1.8, because full frame is so expensive. 😂 The lens is equivalent to an 18-30 f1.2 lens on apsc.
I mean to be very fair, Fujifilm lenses are not full frame and really expensive nevertheless... As far as I know, if you want to get a 28mm lens for Sony, that tiny 28mm is still your best bet😅 Very good deal though and solid lens!
@@pithaupert I doing that a few times on purpose , a A7R with a china brand 50 0.95 It gets dark and those chickens start to jump on some tree branches to sleep , regular telephoto at F2.8 need to bump ISO as it is really low light there and flash is not a option 50 0.95 with heavy cropping is usable at that situation, and DOF at same focus distance will be similar to 200F4 as the diameter of aperture was similar 😂
@@frankwong9486 Interesting choice for sure!🤣 The only concern I would have is that these f/0.95 optics tend to be quite soft wide open which might be a concern in combination with extreme cropping! 😉
@@pithaupert oh right! Hahah I already watched that, but just forgot! Thanks mate :) keep up the awesome content
@@anotherherodiedYeah I felt like you already showed up in my comment section at some point!😉 Thanks for the continued support!☺️
When you recommend 18mm len as you can conveniently crop in, do you find you are losing quality since it is only APSC len? i use Sony APSC camera, and have fear in cropping in my photos. 😢
No need to worry about cropping, just do it! Even after cropping you still have plenty resolution left! ;)
@ well, I haven’t handled the 18 1.4 but I haven’t thought that the 23 1.4 aperture was loose. It feels just stiff enough.
@@sethpotterphoto I own a wide range of XF lenses but the 18mm is by far the loosest, it's not even close haha
To cover those to focal lengths, im getting the new XF16-55 2.8 II
That 70-300 is really sweet too!
Beautiful gallery ❤️
Thanks so so much!❤️
100% agreed on the first two.
For me it's the 16mm 1.4, the 35mm 1.4 and the 90mm F2. That's my holy trinity.
I love that setup especially since it covers a wider focal range than my setup!☺️ I was eyeing that 90mm too!👀
I need only one. 23mm F1.4
I think if I had one prime lens setup, that would be my pick too!
If I only had two, it would be the 18-135 and the 16 f1.4.
Fair choice! Very versatile and rugged!☺️
I'm not knocking the 90mm but highlighting the Viltrox's strengths-it might help with your decision ;)
nice video, 2 lenses for Fujifilm for me a 23mm F/1.4 & 56mm F/1.2 ( or 1.4)
In fairness my Fuji X100 VI is my go to camera for almost everything however and that has a fixed 23mm F/2
I say F/1.2 or F/1.4 for the 56mm
simple because the F/1.4 from sigma (and I imagine others) get you 90% of the fuji 56mm F1/2 R WR for less than half the cost... you can get the 23mm and 56mm DC DN fr less than the the Fuji 56mm
If money is no object get the Fuji for those small benefits, but when printed and after editing, clients wont pay more for your photos because your lens cost more if they are happy with the outcome.
but for none professional use, where you don't have to justify the expenditure, get whatever your budget allows :)
But I'm not a fan of the 18mm focal length... just too wide for me.
If i could have 1 lens forever only i'd get the 33mm F/1.4.
In all seriousness, my setup is a 3 lens setup for XF
the 10-24 F/4 (mostly used for video) used when videoing groups where everyone needs to be in focus and at F/4 pretty much everything from 1 meter to infinity is in focus so no need to worry about autofocus
the 23mm & 56mm for portraiture
I’d take the 14mm f/2.8 and the 35mm f/1.4
Great choice! I'm thinking about getting some of these older primes!
XPro3+Xf35/1.4+60/2.4
Damn, already the second mention of that mysterious 60mm f/2.4! I think there is no way around me trying it🤪 Great setup!
Viltrox 13mm1.4, 27mm1.2 and Sigma 56mm1.4
That's a great setup and among the best value for money setups possible! I am still considering picking up that Viltrox 13mm at some point😉
Yep same!
Great to see our opinions align!☺
Where is your lens hoods?
I use lens hoods mostly to cover the front glass element from rain! I bought a metal JJC lens hood for my XF 18mm but found it to make the lens too front heavy to I leave it at home mostly😅
@@pithaupert kids these days, with your wireless mic holding, no lens hood wearing ways. 🤣
@@AStCG1989 hahah sorryy🥺
Full frame lenses are so expensive... Me rocking the tiny Sony 28mm f2 which is equivalent to an 18mm f1.4 apsc lens. Cost used €200. 😂
For €1300 the Sigma 28-45 f1.8, because full frame is so expensive. 😂
The lens is equivalent to an 18-30 f1.2 lens on apsc.
I mean to be very fair, Fujifilm lenses are not full frame and really expensive nevertheless... As far as I know, if you want to get a 28mm lens for Sony, that tiny 28mm is still your best bet😅 Very good deal though and solid lens!
Right , lets go have wildlife fun take some bird photo and then photo the full moon
i will bring my telephoto lens , your turn now
Haha good one, I guess I'd have to use my extreme cropping and "upres"ing skills to get away with my setup🤣
@@pithaupert I doing that a few times on purpose , a A7R with a china brand 50 0.95
It gets dark and those chickens start to jump on some tree branches to sleep , regular telephoto at F2.8 need to bump ISO as it is really low light there and flash is not a option
50 0.95 with heavy cropping is usable at that situation, and DOF at same focus distance will be similar to 200F4 as the diameter of aperture was similar 😂
@@frankwong9486 Interesting choice for sure!🤣 The only concern I would have is that these f/0.95 optics tend to be quite soft wide open which might be a concern in combination with extreme cropping! But it really does sound like a fun experiment! I had a similar experiment with my telephoto 400mm lens that had the same DOF as my 110mm lens and cropping the latter got me very similar results!😅
@@pithaupert need to get a correct 50 0.95, the one from Leica was known soft
mitakon gen 2 on E mount is ok especially the center of the image circle ,where we are using in crop
In extreme condition there is no better choice and it either no photo or got a usable photo 🙈
Image stabilizers can't help much as objects keep moving , ISO/aperture is the only thing adjustable
40mm
Yeah I love 40mm! Not too tight, nor too wide! That's why the Viltrox 27mm occasionally has a place in my bag!☺️
GFX 20-35 GFX 100-200

Interesting choice! Never got the chance to test the GFX system, maybe in the future!☺
@@zoomifilm I guess zooms are okay too😅
@zoomifilm gfx man the zooms are ridiculously sharp 👌
2.8 equivalent bokeh of full frame for the 35mm, no thanks
not everything is about bokeh my friend ;)
Both are inferior to the 33mm f1.2 WR and none of these have the Fuji character of the old 16mm,35mm,56mm R lenses.
1.4 … and yes absolutely agree. I’ve shot an entire wedding with the 23 and 56
I would not necessarily call the 18mm or the 56mm inferior to the 33mm, having tried all 3. Yet, I'd absolutely get the 33mm f/1.4 if it was the main focal length I'm shooting on! Thanks for watching!☺
I agree, but for travel it's a lump, hence the 35/1.4 in my bag.
