Hollywood depicts military aircraft as futuristic wonder machines. In reality, they are bland, dull, and confining, with an eclectic blend of high tech and old crap.
Ryan Ghezzi, it's not that so much... it takes forever to test and certify components and software for C4I systems. Then there are EMC issues and EMP hardness to consider. It's not like swapping out your PC at home!!
"reinforced, built to purpose, packed with gear and supplies, and using upgraded EMP hardened 1960s cold war era technology designed to withstand megaton blasts EM radiation." - there, fixed your typo for you. Not much sense in flying around in a half empty air craft filled with foreign tech purchased from BestBuy.
Notice how thick the doors and walls are and how up armored the electronics are. Obviously the interior is designed to suppress EMP and negate jamming.
you saw the net across the window. a farday cage around the entire body I guess. So I wonder if any of the EMP reach the inside. I was thinking about if they managed to reinforce the engines too. Yeah the equipment was bolted fast so I guess it can take the physical shockwave from a blast. You get all sort of questions looking at this video. For example are the wing bars stock or special kind.
this aircraft won’t be updated any time soon as it’s a purpose built flying government office, wouldn’t be surprised if it travel’s with communications spares

Since the technology that safegaurds americas resources doesn't need to be connected to the internet or it would be a hinderance. Therefor the technology doesnt have to be the newest or latest. Just the most secure and reliable.
Wrong. There are electric typewriters and CRT monitors on that plane. In no way shape or form is either more reliable than current options, nor is either space / weight efficient, NOR are either RELIABLE or easy maintenance. Wanted to get a closer look a the printer. I suspect dot matrix.
No, it's old because it was built during the Cold War and it's certainly not all analog. Digital systems can be hardened against EMP as well, and it isn't that difficult to do. It's just that no civilian systems have a need to be EMP-hard because it's extra expense and complexity.
No it is old from our point o.v. but it was up to date when necessary, now it's a museum,so what is all this talk about, old and phone calls and so on ???
Incredible tour! The tech on board looks 'old and outdated' but the systems do the job and do it well. They've ceetainly packed a lot into a very tight space, my only concern is how drab and boring it looks and not much space to rest and relax. How long would a crew typically fly on a mission? I guess the plane could fly indefinitely as far as fuel is concerned but 57 crates of MRE would need to be replenished at some point?😎👍 One thing that surprised me was the use of 'old school' radio comms and that 5 mile long wire antenna! Running @20kw that would ceetainly pump out a strong signal, 2.5x around the globe he mentioned, wow! That's a hell of a thing to drag behind a plane @ 40,000ft though😲😮😊😁😎👍
@Skylark Yeah ;), I thought something like that, my comment was meant as a joke... It would be really interesting though to find out more about them, such as the specs, cpu's, memory, who built them and what kind of functions they serve and what software they run... but alas, I guess that's not public information... ;)
It's not what it seems, hardened electronics are kept rather straight forward, they are not ment to play video games or store non mission data... trust me you don't want to trust communication in a crisis to snap chat or Skype
@@Lima-fj7ps Yeah, like those IBM produced radiation shielded PowerPC processors, which are used on many space probes... Even the some of latest versions still in use run at early 1990's frequencies, like 33MHz etc...
despite its huge military budget, the cost and organization of updating the various armed forces of the USA would be staggering. These cold war relics dont really need to be decommissioned and replaced with a new one, they seem to work just fine. When Vice did its recent segment on the USAF missile command, nearly all the equipment used was from the early 80s, using 5.5" floppy's and the like.
If it wasn't the real deal then why would it exist. It will probably one in a fleet that would all be used so there is more than one plane in the air just in case.
I got to board one of these about a month after I got out of the USAF in 1975. I had just been on ICBM crew duty and much of the stuff in the E-4B was the same as stuff inside the missile sites where I pulled alerts. I noticed this tour did not show the "red safe" where keys, codes and documents are kept. I asked a tour guide where the red safe was back in 1975 and he only looked at me and shook his head "no". It is there somewhere I'm sure.

Wow - really interesting and very old style flight-deck. There is even still the flight engineer's panel and seat. Modern 747s would be a glass cockpit with no flight engineer.
+jagara1 There are some old style steam dial Gulfstreams still in operation with the US Government. Supposedly they are less disrupted by EMP and EMI than the newer versions.
When was this filmed? Are these planes still carrying this level of technology due to their increased resiliency and repairability in case of EMP attacks and such?
Thanks for the tour. You must have friends in high places. A flying battle tank built for command and survival. The gally is a luxury. MRE is the main diet. Under battle conditions, the emotional stress inside this plane would be monstrous.
Yet you watched it and felt compelled to comment on it, causing me to comment on your comment and who knows what may follow, but all in all a complete waste of time was had by all. Much like the plane at the heart of the matter.

Why waste tax payers money on upgrading something that is unlikely to ever be used? It does its job and that's the most important thing. Also older equipment is more safer today than the modern tech.
The importance of the technology on that plane falls somewhere between your grandmas recipe for home made apple pie and your favorite super hero when you were a kid.
CriticoolHit Right, but they won't tell us the maximum depth that our submarines can reach, why would they show us that the doomsday plane is run by Commodore-64s?
Dude. None of this tech is relevant. That plane is museum. You said it yourself. Why would they show that? The most likely answer is... "Who cares, its out of date and done." Tin foil hat theory: "I would always want my enemy to think I was operating 30 years in the past... "
We undertook an unofficial study of this eventuality, "World MegaDeaths In Millions", and determined 90% of their retaliatory capability would be destroyed. We would therefore prevail and suffer only minor and acceptable casualties from their remaining forces, which would be badly damaged and uncoordinated. ____
@@xx-pn4io We would therefore prevail? At what cost? That is some seriously moronic cold war thinking going on there. 90% of their retaliatory capability being destroyed means that 10% survives if my elementary school math is correct. And at that point in a nuclear conflict I sincerely doubt they would be holding back. So guess what - they're going to be throwing that 10% our way. Let's use a rough estimate of Russia's current "usable" nuclear arsenal from Wikipedia of 1,600 nuclear weapons. That means they would be hitting the US with somewhere around 160 nuclear weapons. One hundred and sixty nuclear detonations on the continental United States. You would qualify that as "minor and acceptable casualties"?
Jimbo Buddy. That is a line from General Buck Turgidson, the Air Force Chief of Staff in "Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb". You gotta see it. It is one of the greatest films ever made. .
There's a "Doomsday Machine" In the Movie, which is a big bomb that the Russian's bury to blow themselves up, if command & control are lost. The bomb is so big that it will wipe out all life on Earth - and it is 'fully automated' to rule out 'human meddling'.. Meaning dangerous as all get out. In the words of General Ripper, the USAF bomber wing commander, who sends his B-52's to attack the Soviets on his on authority, "That's the way your hard core Commie works." .
That's the advantage. In case there is an EMP, the old instruments still work, most Chip technology stops working when exposed to an EMP (there is usually an EMP when a Nuke goes off).
I refurbed the gallies in one in 1995. They told me that it was the second most expensive plane in the world. I doubt it was this one though because they said there was four of them and one was always in the air.
Worked and flew on these aircraft in the 80s. Most of you just do not know what you’re talking about. Interesting and entertaining to read your comments. Today, the airplane is just an airborne command center, which performs a vital role. Back in the day, these planes were super classified and more capable than anything on the planet.
That's because commercial planes are equipped with technology that needs to be able to filter out concentrations of communication signals on the ground so it can start dispensing chemtrails whenever the plane is close to urban and residential areas. Cell phones would disturb the scanners so the government forces airlines to prohibit use while they control population growth... wake up SHEE- oooh, gotcha!! :D

The equipment here looks outdated (and some of it is) but it's also designed to be relatively simple to maintain, very reliable, durable against lots of catastrophes including EMP and is heavily hardware-based, rather than relying too much on complex software which can be hacked or may contain bugs. Software bugs during a nuclear apocalypse are not going to be good for business.
Interesting. Saw one of these on the tarmac at Patrick AFB in Florida once, so I pulled over to take some pictures. In a heartbeat MP's showed up and made me delete the photos.
A freind of mine was a C130J pilot. He said most of the technology was 20-30 behind despite it being a fairly new aircraft. The military is slow to adapt for whatever reason, likely because it works fine I guess

I served on the NEACP/E4B aircrew in the 80's. Awesome assignment.
Thank you for your service Andy. From Pakistan
I'm glad lots of folks think this equipment is old and out dated. The bad guys might think the same. Little does everyone know just how powerful, well built and sophisticated that equipment really is! Our defense budget is over half a trillion $$. That provides us with the best of the best.
We see these fly all the time here in Omaha. I've always wondered what the interior set up was like. Awesome!!
It looks like a laundromat
That's what the aircrew does.
Well, there'll be a lot of people needing clean shorts when the balloon goes up.

Hollywood depicts military aircraft as futuristic wonder machines. In reality, they are bland, dull, and confining, with an eclectic blend of high tech and old crap.
Papi Uuhmelmehahay there’s good reason they still use “old crap”.
Confining? Damn, I didn't know airmen needed an onboard spa to drop bombs or perform their duties
Ryan Ghezzi, it's not that so much... it takes forever to test and certify components and software for C4I systems. Then there are EMC issues and EMP hardness to consider. It's not like swapping out your PC at home!!
"reinforced, built to purpose, packed with gear and supplies, and using upgraded EMP hardened 1960s cold war era technology designed to withstand megaton blasts EM radiation."
- there, fixed your typo for you. Not much sense in flying around in a half empty air craft filled with foreign tech purchased from BestBuy.
The E-4 was pretty accurately depicted in the 1990 movie "By Dawn's Early Light".
Thanks HR, for posting a fantastic tour. I'm new to military aircraft so this was a treat.
Also notice the lack of computers in the cockpit, probably one of the last to have a flight engineer in the cockpit.
It's built off the original 747-200 which they stopped making in '91. That chassis is pretty old school.
this aircraft won’t be updated any time soon as it’s a purpose built flying government office, wouldn’t be surprised if it travel’s with communications spares
@@Derrick.Aguero87 the comms operators are actually maintainers as well. They can fix the equipement that they use.
Had one of these do several flyover passes yesterday at Mather Field, CA. It is believed to be the first time an E-4B has done so at an air show.
We are having them hosted here in lnk as the runway is being redone at offutt amazing how much they shake the house at 120feet on approch
I liked the sign on the printer -- "DO NOT BREAK"
Sure it looks old and funny. But when they use this for it's intended purpose, we'll all be cooking the family dog over a campfire to stay alive.
thats why my dog is fat
@K Jester: This is the kind of 'smart-ass' retort that I live for. One comment or comeback like this can just totally make my day. I love humorous 'smart-asses'!! I grew up in a family full of them, the world would be so bland and boring without them.
World war 3 will be nuclear . World war 4 will be with sticks and stones
They have a seating section for the press so the aircrew and VIPs can eat them when they run out of food. Sorry, only overweight, juicy media correspondents permitted on board.
Yeah so, they will be eating the family dog too. Just in mre form.
Ok time for a new doomsday plane. I suggest a 747-8 with individual suites, ambient lighting, and free wi-fi.
A 787-9 would make more sense.
@@DLordSadow Not enough floor space.
Probably not going to happen for cost reasons.
Since the technology that safegaurds americas resources doesn't need to be connected to the internet or it would be a hinderance. Therefor the technology doesnt have to be the newest or latest. Just the most secure and reliable.
old computer are not that reliable so an upgrade might be nice
usb ports make newer computers less secure. if the older computers break their parts or boards are simply replaced.
Wrong. There are electric typewriters and CRT monitors on that plane. In no way shape or form is either more reliable than current options, nor is either space / weight efficient, NOR are either RELIABLE or easy maintenance. Wanted to get a closer look a the printer. I suspect dot matrix.
+websuspect I think the only reason they don't upgrade is because they don't need it any more it's a coldwar relic
Dot Matrix is still common int he Government where you need a lot of duplicate forms. Plus they are pretty dang reliable.
Please also upload in full 1080p hd. Thanks. :D
It has old technology because it is meant to only be on analog. Run even if there is an emp or solar flare
DaBeast34 these dummies want Apple tablet and flat screen soon as a EMP hit the gonna wish the hard the old shit 🤦🏾♂️
@@RSN-STX you can easily protect microchips from emp's. Just a faraday cage
No, it's old because it was built during the Cold War and it's certainly not all analog. Digital systems can be hardened against EMP as well, and it isn't that difficult to do. It's just that no civilian systems have a need to be EMP-hard because it's extra expense and complexity.
Ok sure bigwhiteyeti
No it is old from our point o.v. but it was up to date when necessary, now it's a museum,so what is all this talk about, old and phone calls and so on ???
Incredible tour! The tech on board looks 'old and outdated' but the systems do the job and do it well. They've ceetainly packed a lot into a very tight space, my only concern is how drab and boring it looks and not much space to rest and relax. How long would a crew typically fly on a mission? I guess the plane could fly indefinitely as far as fuel is concerned but 57 crates of MRE would need to be replenished at some point?😎👍
One thing that surprised me was the use of 'old school' radio comms and that 5 mile long wire antenna! Running @20kw that would ceetainly pump out a strong signal, 2.5x around the globe he mentioned, wow! That's a hell of a thing to drag behind a plane @ 40,000ft though😲😮😊😁😎👍
There will be no boring at all the day of a nuclear war! 🤔
I hope whenever it's needed all the operators can remember all the CP/M commands for all the 1970's computers ;) lol
Battlestar Galactica remake certainly recommends hardened and simple electronics.
Kind of reminds me of the Battlestar Galactica with all the purposely outdated technology.
that's the thinking. behind the four legs of the us military. the Navy has more.modern equipment. the army is due for upgrades.
despite its huge military budget, the cost and organization of updating the various armed forces of the USA would be staggering. These cold war relics dont really need to be decommissioned and replaced with a new one, they seem to work just fine. When Vice did its recent segment on the USAF missile command, nearly all the equipment used was from the early 80s, using 5.5" floppy's and the like.
Da Ca My thoughts exactly. No way would we be shown the 'real deal'. This feels like a tour of a Smithsonian aviation/communication museum.
up to date like American public infrastructure...
lol
If it wasn't the real deal then why would it exist. It will probably one in a fleet that would all be used so there is more than one plane in the air just in case.
I got to board one of these about a month after I got out of the USAF in 1975. I had just been on ICBM crew duty and much of the stuff in the E-4B was the same as stuff inside the missile sites where I pulled alerts. I noticed this tour did not show the "red safe" where keys, codes and documents are kept. I asked a tour guide where the red safe was back in 1975 and he only looked at me and shook his head "no". It is there somewhere I'm sure.
+Bbendfender i yhink the president has the launch key with him in the so called atomic football brifcase so he can launch everyware maybee thats why it not in the plane or maybee you just call norad too launch the missiles possible ;)
+Anders Bovin In the 70's, when I was on a Titan II ICBM launch crew, we could launch from the site and I think the Airborne Command Post could launch the Minuteman III missiles from that plane. I seriously doubt the President can launch anything on his own. I don't think NORAD can launch missiles.
+Bbendfender iam not a expert iam just guesing .... but he has a briefcase with the lauch codes chained too a officer always close too him that if a event happens that what i know i have seen it on discovery :)
+Anders Bovin You are correct. The President has the launch codes close at hand all the time. Missiles aren't launched by pushing a button. I am not going to go into how they are launched but it involves sophisticated encrypted messages that must be decoded to verify their authenticity.
+Bbendfender iiam from denmark we dont have icba missile so i dont know precisely what you do when you fire but i like military stuff finds it wery intereting
"It's a little busy in the cockpit. Their doing maintenance work"! Yet, their all just sitting around! Lol
Legend has it he's still giving a tour.
This sounded super interesting, but turned out to be incredibly boring... I just watched a tour of an office space.
Try working on that shit heap.

This seems like something that should be classified.
At least Amiga's.
Dude. None of this tech is relevant. That plane is museum. You said it yourself. Why would they show that? The most likely answer is... "Who cares, its out of date and done." Tin foil hat theory: "I would always want my enemy to think I was operating 30 years in the past... "
***** What??!??! The military's one-off electronic equipment isn't designed to look good but rather to function well?????

We undertook an unofficial study of this
eventuality, "World MegaDeaths In Millions",
and determined 90% of their retaliatory

therefore prevail and suffer only minor and
acceptable casualties from their remaining
forces, which would be badly damaged and
uncoordinated.

Looks like eighties technology. I am sure it must have cost a lot.

It's mostly analog. Transistor based microprocessors are sensitive to EMP and will be permanently destroyed when exposed to certain power levels

Worked and flew on these aircraft in the 80s. Most of you just do not know what you’re talking about. Interesting and entertaining to read your comments. Today, the airplane is just an airborne command center, which performs a vital role. Back in the day, these planes were super classified and more capable than anything on the planet.
Soooooooooooo all this equipment in this plane running all time, meanwhile in comercial planes we need to put our phones in airplane mode....
duh becuz we hav tu make our fones in airoplane mode to help the aireoplane fly rite
Not true... anyone who has ever piloted an aircraft has seen cell phone interfere with nav equipment.
mgoblue0970 mythbusters seemed to have a problem finding anyone to corroborate that.
@Star Gazer...the flying testbeds which both Boeing and Airbus have built to EMI seem to contradict Mythbusters. Next time come to with actual science or a scholarly source instead of pop culture.

I haven't read all the comments but 'Im dying to say, " Are they going to put an elevator in to the top floor"?
So this planes main function is to make a phone call? A "NUCLEAR OPTION" PHONE CALL. sweet
You think this thing looks depressing, according to an MIT professor Aliens fly around the galaxy in old fkn rocks.

I worked on equipment that looked a lot like that, back in the mid 1980's.
This thing is an antique.
Everybody is commenting about how old and outdated the technology is on this plane. Well in a shtf scenario this is the exact place that I would want to be, or in a bunker somewhere.
Well the navy has still got a Battleship of the USS Arizona type in reserve for the same reason. It is not affected by these EMP pulse waves. So in my book it iss forward thinking!!!!!!

I wonder how much radiation shielding the plane has ?
I know it has EMP shielding
But there must be radiation shielding as well
Probably shadow shielding on major equipment and the people in charge.
I'm guessing the shielding is sufficient to keep them alive long enough to carry out their mission. If the radiation was strong enough to kill them quickly, the blast would likely blow them from the sky.
