- Stakes were high as Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin met in Geneva. The meeting may have not resolved international tensions, but - at the very least - it provided a chance for both the United States and Russia to affirm their positions and convince their allies of their firm intentions.
Showing off is an important part of such meetings, and both countries certainly have a knack for demonstrating their perceived might through whatever means possible. The airplanes with which presidents arrived are among such means. Massive four-engined beasts of both presidents are some of the largest passenger aircraft in the world, and are a demonstration of the very best both countries’ aviation industry can offer.
Of course, it is impossible to say which aircraft is more impressive. The impression is a subjective thing. But it is possible to compare them: lay out the facts and allow everybody to formulate an opinion of their own. So, what are those facts?

1:35. That is a Boeing 707 tail #27000, the plane which carried Kennedy's body. She is on permanent display at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, OH where I have toured her, along with every other retired Presidential Aircraft.

sure IL. 747 is a common plane, you can see it in every airport, while IL 96 is very rare. Probably the only way you can spot it is Gavana airport, since Cubana airlines has one.
That 747 can literally stay in the air indefinitely, they can refuel & keep on going almost indefinitely.

One thing to reduce the cost of the AF1 replacements would be to combine the job with the doom's day planes as well. Both are set up as mobile comand post AF1 in peace and The Norad AF1 in war. The only real change is the paintjobs and the extra luxury in the normal AF1s cut the press by half and some of the frills and with 4 planes the same instead of 2 sets of 2 with 90% the same requirements the cost per unit could be cut by half of one of the four. Up to a fleet of 6 to include high officials like the VP, Speaker and Protemp along with State or other cabinet members on special missions. The big issue going forward is the four engine requirement that most builders are moving away from with larger 2 engine pods only. Like the Navy a POTUS transport requires some added redundancy that is disappearing in the commercial world. Perhaps even a C5 conversion would make sense in the future blending with the motorcade transport as extra doubles.
The E-4s are modified specifically to support Air Combat Command's (formerly SAC) operations. It has equipment that would be both superfluous and overly heavy to the Special Air Mission task of transporting the President. The E-4's interior is pretty much no-frills.
If cost was the paramount issue, then the USAF could just stick seats and an Airstream trailer in the cargo bay of a C-17, which in fact is often done for flying the Secretary of Defense and DoD top staff to international conferences.
Its for the president, who cares how much it costs.
The C5 fleet is just as old as the VC25’s. They would never replace the VC25s

3:54 - Air Force One DOES NOT have a “glass cockpit” last I checked. The term “glass cockpit” refers to multi function display screens in the cockpit, which are meant to replace more traditional gauges and buttons everywhere.
If you watch a documentary about AF-1, you will see the cockpit is vintage with old style gauges everywhere.

I served as a pilot in the Air Force and know a weee bit more than most on the subject.
How about this tidbit.. if you are a US citizen, it’s your plane. You are allowed to tour the plane (whichever is serving as Air Force 1 or Marine 1 and so on that day). The plane goes sterile 12 hours prior to the president boarding so the tour must be complete by then. I have toured the VC25, VC137 and Vc9 plus flown the Presidential Aero Commander that was restored.
An aircraft used by the President that isn't from one of the Armed Service branches has the callsign "Executive One".

The A380 is fantastic and was considered when the Air Force was deciding on which aircraft would replace the two VC-25A primarily used as Air Force One. It really just made more sense to use a more modern version of the 747 though. The shape is an American icon and synonymous with Air Force One for decade now. The 747 is also American built while the A380 is European so it wouldn’t be quite as fitting. Not to mention the A380 is impressive to see for its size only, while the 747 has size, pedigree, and a shape that is immediately recognizable whether it’s in the air or on the ground. It’s just special in a way the A380 can never be which really helps when it comes to transporting the President to a meeting that requires you to show off against a foreign leader like Putin.

The 747 is big enough, like the 747 is already a jumbo jet. So the A380 would just be overkill and would require more fuel and maintenance costs on top of everything else. And the 747 is a iconic American aircraft so why else would the president be in anything else of this size.
