Want to jump into the Yakuza series? TL;DR: Yakuza 0 or Yakuza Kiwami are great starting points, but watch the full video to find out why. #ign #yakuza #gaming

Judgement is rough around the edges, but really starts showing its hand when you meet Higashi, storm the a local hideout, and when you meet Masugane in the 8th chapter. That conversation and series of cutscenes was beautifully done. I'm taking a break, but it's worth pushing through bit by bit and the recaps are at the start of every chapter. You won't forget anything. So, give it another try.
you NEED to start on Yakuza 0. I had no idea myself and jumped right into 0 and in one week of purchase i put 70 hours into it, it's genuinely one of the best games ever made and i've already bought and installed Kiwami to carry on the adventure after i finish yakuza 0! :D
Ferrari King you won’t be disappointed I played most yakuza games and start with yakuza 0 cuz you will get hooked. Ps i got 80 something hours on yakuza 0 😂
I'll throw in another vote for Yakuza 0. Kiwami has much more of an impact with the relationships seen in 0. I can't imagine playing Kiwami first, as many of its heavy scenes would fall flat if not for the experiences seen in 0.
What about before Yakuza 0 came out? I'm very much in the same boat as you and believe that 0 should be played before the others, but I'm just curious how the series felt before 0 came out.
I played Zero first, then Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2. That worked for me, because everything in Zero and the later games was still new. No surprises or hints, and the Majima side story in Kiwami 2 acts as an epilogue to Zero. It had emotional weight because I pushed through all three games with beautiful storytelling and some of the most insane writing and side-quests ever written. Such as film directing, Haunted recordings, Helping a kid grow up, Accidently Raising Taxes, and Bomb Disarming, with a side of the Majima Construction Company. I laughed, I cried, and I enjoyed the ride. Looking forward to the Remastered Collection (3,4,5) and 6- The Song of Life.
If you think you're going to play all the games (and you'll be surprised at how likely that might be for you, I was on the fence for years) you should start with Yakuza Kiwami. It establishes the story really nicely before it gets super complicated, and it introduces all the main characters in an organic way as they were written 15 years ago. Yakuza 4 introduces a ton of characters who pop up in the 80s, with Yakuza 5 adding to their stories, and you'll have no idea who they are or why they matter if you start with 0 (like the story behind Majima losing his eye). Having said that, Yakuza 0 is probably the best place to start if you don't think you'll play more than one Yakuza, since it's supposed to be the best and crystallizes all the charm of the Yakuza series into one game. But It'll make the experience of the game less enjoyable if you play the other games in order after that imo
I beat that game 5 times and I can only say: If any of you likes Sleeping Dogs, please, play this series and you'll love It. Yakuza's amazing, specially if you start from 0 (one of my fav games of all time).
But the impact of playing 0 after is still the same honestly. You play with one view of the character, and then have your eyes opened with another view. Since 0 plays off you having knowledge of the other 5 titles, the impact of certain moments won't be felt
@@psychomantis8007 Indeed, I mean it's like he says with the Star Wars analogy. I've started 0, played 'til after the first boss-fight. But I'm still undecided. I'm thinking about playing Kiwami first.

1 million percent start with 0. 0 is how I was introduced to the series and honestly if I started with 1 I wouldn't have been obsessed with the series the way i am now. I currently own yakuza 0 1 2, the remastered 34 and 5, as well as 6. I even bought judgement which is a side story game part of the same yakuza franchise. 0 was such a phenomenal game, it's still my favorite out of all of them. (Although I haven't played past 3.)
no no no please don't played them both and the analogy to the star wars series is not correct, for instance even though the protagonist kiryu is younger in 0 he seems like 2 years older in kiwami which is like 20 years after 0
coming from someone who's a massive fan of the yakuza series and who has played the games several times, i would definitely recommend starting with yakuza 0 since yakuza kiwami's story is a lot more outdated than yakuza 0's story and since there are less things to do in kiwami compared to 0. yakuza 0 also makes it easier to get into the yakuza series thanks to its better story, side missions and characters compared to kiwami. i personally think kiwami is one of the weaker games both story and gameplay wise which makes it easier for people to drop the series entirely (besides majima everywhere which i absolutely love). anyways, you decide. you are still gonna be in for one of the best rides of your life so enjoy :)
There's no perfect starting point for Yakuza, if you haven't been with it from the start. The original PS2 game wasn't well liked by many who tried it when it came out, and doesn't really reflect why so many people love the new games. Kiwami expands on the original, but the pacing and structure still feel like a PS2 RPG, and the padded out opening and Majima Everywhere system are likely to discourage a lot of new players. Yakuza 0 opens brilliantly, showing how compelling and fun the main characters are, right from the start. It's story is more exciting and varied, and the gameplay mechanics are the most well-rounded in the series. I think the fact that 0 is such a great starting point is largely responsible for how popular the series became after its release. I started with Yakuza 4, and felt some regret over not knowing about some story threads and characters, but having gone back, I think it was the perfect starting point for me at the time. I used to say it didn't really matter where new players start, but since the release of 0, I've strongly recommended they play that first.
Max is right! Play Yakuza! Also, the recommendations are correct. I'd say play Judgment, if you like it, start with the main series. I myself played 3 first back on PS3, I kinda liked it, but almost didn't finish (I think I didn't quiet get it), same with 4... Only when 5 (best of the series imo) came around I fell in love. After that 0, Kiwami, 6, Kiwami 2... Don't do it in that order 😅
Kiwami 2 is a bit of a mixed bag as a jumping on point because it includes a separate side story starring Majima, the kicker being that this side story is 100% a sequel to his Yakuza 0 story. The story in general also builds upon relationships established in Kiwami 1, and the same goes for every successive game and as such you shouldn't start with those games, especially the farther in you get. Yakuza 6's payoff really hinges on your attachment to Kiryu and Haruka respectively, which will be at its strongest if you've played ever Yakuza game up to that point. Zero and Kiwami are definitely the best places to start(I personally started at Yakuza 3, yeah I know that contradicts what I just said, but don't worry about that. Being the third game it wasn't so far in that I couldn't make up for lost time.). I agree with Max's opinion that Kiwami is probably the better option because Zero serves as backstory and fanservice, but Kiwami is also less likely in my opinion to hook you and bring you into the rest of the series while Zero would be much more effective at that being one of the best, if not THE best, entries in the series.
Even tho story has more impact when you play Zero first, you gotta know that its basically the same game,so if you recommend zero, even tho the story is great,it does feels like you're also missing stuff, and in my opinion yakuza 1 has a more serious and badass aproach to how you get involved in the yakuza clans,so it depends what the people you're gonna recommend the series gonna like the most, since its the same gameplay and map in both of them
I have the origins collection. I started playing Yakuza 0, then I bought Kiwami, later then Kiwami 2 'cause I wanted more. I recommend play the Yakuza/Kiwami first, later 0, Kiwami 2 and if you already played or you know something about Yakuza 5/4/3, play The Song of Life.
See, I'm starting with Kiwami instead of Zero because I heard Zero plays the best. Rather than downgrade I want to upgrade. I'm willing to put up with the shortcomings of a series I've never played rather than complain about how it wasn't like this on the last game.
I started with Kiwami because It was the remake of the first game and got me hook in the franchise. Now I'm playing 0 for the backstories of some the characters.
you should play the yakuza 0,because you need to know the game timeline then play the kiwami 1&2 then the remastered and 6 in order if you want to know the timeline well
I am so very happy that I played Kiwami first. I got all the way to the end right before it says “this is the final battle”. I fell in love with Crazy Goro Majima. Then out of sheer randomness decided, “I should stop now and play Yakuza 0 to get to know Majima and Nishiki more.” And I’m so glad I did because it all just meshed so well for me. I’m really really looking forward to playing Kiwami 2.
The problem of playing in chronological order is, after you finish with the epic Dragon Engine of Kiwami 2, going back to the urine soaked PS3 era color of Yakuza 3 will literally burn your eyes out. Not to mention the awkward less refined controls.
I wonder if other and future Yakuza titles will be made for Xbox as well and what this might mean for other PS4 exclusive SEGA titles....i guess a lot hinges on how it performs on Xbox....i think its gonna be performing great since the Xbox community have been asking for Yakuza for quite a while
I picked up both Kiwami and 6 around a year ago while on sale. Played Kiwami, loved it and have had 6 sitting there as I want to play in order now. Just picked up Kiwami 2 and Zero on sale so will be playing them by which time the remastered collection should start releasing. I'm going to end up having 6 for about 2 years before I end up playing it! Sidenote: Like A Dragon is actually numbered as 7 for the Japanese release.
Actually you can even start from Like A Dragon. Sure, you'll have to work up from 0 to 6 to understand who some of the characters introduced are, but they are actually really background characters and more for the fan service, so if you do not want to play everything from the Yakuza 0, you don't have to (but you really miss on something)
I started with Yakuza 3 on PS3 but didn't really get in til zero came out ....now I'm super hooked to this awesome franchise 😆. Looking forward to Y7 and the re release of Y3 ,Y4 Y5 on PS4 next month

Then out of sheer randomness decided, “I should stop now and play Yakuza 0 to get to know Majima and Nishiki more.” And I’m so glad I did because it all just meshed so well for me. I’m really really looking forward to playing Kiwami 2.
I'll just say this it doesn't matter which one you start at all that matters is that you just start playing
I Start with yakuza 0...
Its awesome.. I'm in chaoter 3 now
The problem of playing in chronological order is, after you finish with the epic Dragon Engine of Kiwami 2, going back to the urine soaked PS3 era color of Yakuza 3 will literally burn your eyes out. Not to mention the awkward less refined controls.
Yeah I’m not looking forward to that, I’m spoiled with the dragon engine
@@dncewzrd yakuza 3 is great, you get used to it
Me playing the games in reverse order
*you guys have starting points?*
🎼🎶I waaanna beee your girrrrl oooaaAAaahhhhh!🎵
I was watching CVit's video on this topic last night
Thanks for this Max! I just got a PS4 on Black Friday so I was wondering where to start~
Thanks . You pretty much just sold me into to it
Yakuza 0 is $10 on PSN atm. I'm getting it
I wonder if other and future Yakuza titles will be made for Xbox as well and what this might mean for other PS4 exclusive SEGA titles....i guess a lot hinges on how it performs on Xbox....i think its gonna be performing great since the Xbox community have been asking for Yakuza for quite a while
Makes sense Max Scoville is such a fan of the Yakuza Games. His heat gauge is always full.
the young pictures of Max were hilarious
I already started playing Yakuza 0
the yakuza games are awesome and more people should be playing them.
Well done explaining why you'd start with the original game
I picked up both Kiwami and 6 around a year ago while on sale. Played Kiwami, loved it and have had 6 sitting there as I want to play in order now.
Just picked up Kiwami 2 and Zero on sale so will be playing them by which time the remastered collection should start releasing. I'm going to end up having 6 for about 2 years before I end up playing it!
Sidenote: Like A Dragon is actually numbered as 7 for the Japanese release.
Doesn’t really matter but if you wanna start from very Beginning start at yakuza 0 it’s the best one!!!!
The Yakuza series is so awesome
0 follow the story all the way through chronologically, you won't be disappointed, if you go for 100% though its a bit more effort
Just started yakuza 0 and im hooked
This video helped a lot actually.
Thank you this help me alot
I just ordered all of them. Can’t wait to start playing.
How were they? I’m thinking about starting it
I started with Yakuza 3 on PS3 but didn't really get in til zero came out ....now I'm super hooked to this awesome franchise 😆. Looking forward to Y7 and the re release of Y3 ,Y4 Y5 on PS4 next month
0 is without a doubt the best yakuza game hands down
O easily, it gives you a much better handle once you get to Kiwami and the story just hits you deeper if you play 0 first lol
