Patrick Donohoe I'll be honest... I think i was really drunk when I wrote that comment... I have no clue what I was trying to say. PS. I am currently really drunk.
I think his rating system is based on all time... so 5/5 would be stuff like Super Mario 64, stuff he really considers a true masterpiece with few or no flaws
I think that depends on whether a game is judged for what it did during it's timeperiod, and for that SM64 truly deserves nothing less than 4, or for how well it does for today's standards. And judged like that, every game will eventually become a 0.5. I mean, of course Yakuza 0 is better than SM64 when it was designed for systems with like a couple of hundred times the computing power of the N64.
Ok, I can see the writing, though that's a bit of an uneven match. It's a platformer designed for everyone vs. an adult-only thriller-action-JRPG(? I guess). But objectively, yes, Yakuza has the better writing. Everything else is kind of my point. Of course SM64 would lose to Yakuza 0 in every way when there just is more of everything. Not only on screen due to more computing power, but also in the game in general as the Blue ray has like 700 times the capacity of the biggest N64 cartridges. (25 GB minimum vs. 64 MB maximum, if i didn't confuse some values). And it would probably look the same if you compared Yakuza to some game 20 years from now. It could get 1/5 for graphics because it isn't even VR.
the amount of people defending it in the comments made me try it and, gotta disagree with dunk. it was in fact a very good game with a strong, well-executed story & fun gameplay.
@@thedude3005It's just that Yakuza isn't really all that violent It can show some pretty ugly things but it never goes full cynical I personally like that about it, but some may believe it would have benefited from more shocking scenes

It's bizarre how the game distributes money. I spent so much time doing the business side stuff and didn't even make a dent in how much the moves cost to upgrade.
@@videogamedunkey As Kiryu I "grinded" the business while doing the pocket racers and other side missions. By the end once you have everything he makes a billion yen every few minutes, with the highest tier moves being a billion each. I became overpowered as hell, but it's weird because the beginning of the game can feel really overwhelming. The cabaret club Majima runs though NEVER makes anywhere near the same amount of money.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COVERING THIS GAME! This series needs to get more popular in the west and I hope people can see how fucking amazing and genius this series is. It's worth so much attention and Yakuza 0 is one of the best, most complete and extensive games I've played in a long time.
I've tried playing several Yakuza games and I've never actually finished any of them. The bizarre shifts in tone ruin the experience for me. Am I supposed to be playing some gritty game about murderous gangsters, or watching some weird Japanese game show?
Its never gonna get popular in the west. To much story. To much cutscenes. Unskippable if anything. Westerners dont like that. The closest they got was Last Of Us. MGS4 barely made it here.
It has absolutely nothing to do with the volume of story. Some of the most popular games of all time in the west are very story-heavy. Some of them are even Japanese.
Yeah, we hate cutscenes and story and lack of action, that's why RPGs are so popular and games like the original mass effect trilogy and witcher 3 are considered some of the best right? Lol what is it with people trying so hard to denounce their own culture
"Then it had me, then it lost me, then it starts reeling me back in, nope! Suitcase." That sentence is so dunkey-like, but illustrated with Yakuza gameplay, it purely shows that the game was made for him.
This game is a fking blast. Even if the story might not be your taste the over-the-top bombastic gameplay really makes this a unique title & a fun title at that. Does what a game should do and that is deliver 100% fun.
Also the business side stories give you a lot to do when you need a break from all the cutscene driven story. The catfight club, Majima's business as a cabaret club manager, gambling with the homeless in West Park, the underwater death match colliseum, Mr. Shakedown, it's all like a fantastic John Woo film you play your way through. Ever want to kill a helicopter with a handgun then fish up some sea turtles and masturbate to some softcore Japanese porn? This game actually lets you do that. It's the best game of all time.
Let's be real here it suffers from final fantasy 4 syndrome where loads of characters unnecessarily die to make the villain look badass. The story was phenomenal anyway though but shibusawa is possibly the worst villain I've ever seen
@@cursedinari7434 Sagawa's kills were meaningful and Shibusawa had some weak buildup as the main villain in my opinion, Oda's death being the biggest thing he does until the end. I think most of the characters introduced were meaningful and died in meaningful ways.
Garrett Oliva Garrett Oliva I agree. I never said that they were bad characters, I apologize if I conveyed that wrong. All the characters they introduced were interesting and had their own unique goals and ambitions, and I loved them all.
Hold up, Sagawa is not a villain! Tbh it kinda pisses me off how Yakuza fans praise Kuze as this super badass villain (I think he's a total bitch) and either hate or completely ignore Sagawa. He (Sagawa) was the one who stood by Majima even after his many fuck ups. He could've thrown Majima under the bus to save his own ass, but he sticked with him until the end. I agree with Shibusawa being an underdeveloped villain though. We barely get any insight on his character until moments before fighting him.
As a kid, I remember playing the original Yakuza game on PS2 back when it first came out and I remember enjoying it, but for whatever reason I totally forgot the franchise existed, most likely because it wasn't a big name in the west. Fast forward to 2017 and I'm looking at some random selection of PS4 games on Amazon, and I see Yakuza 0 for like £20-something. I'm like "Hey, a prequel to that old game I had. Sure, why not." *ADD TO CART*. Best decision I've made all year. Totally fell in love. The serious, gritty crime thriller story (which contrary to what was said in this review does have something of a body-count) juxtaposed by the completely hilarious absurdity of all the side missions and mini-games, presented in an awesome beat-em-up which has some of the most satisfying mechanics of any action game I've played and only gets better as the game progresses. It's some of the best fun I've had in gaming this year, second only to Breath of The Wild. For me, it's easily a 9/10. They've also brought out Yakuza Kiwami, a remaster of the original (which I am currently playing) and there's a remaster of Yakuza 2 on the way. If you've never delved into this series before, now's the time.
I remember hearing Yakuza is very similar to Shenmue, getting the game from the Dreamcast costs money and really hard to find, so I decided to tell my sister to get Yakuza Kiwami for me. And I had a blast playing the game that I recently bought Yakuza 0 to understand the History of the game
Yakuza 0 was my first game of the series and it was awesome. Bought Yakuza Kiwama and I thought it was the continuation of Kiryu and Nishiki adventures, boy.....was I wrong.
Right there with ya bro. I thought it was gonna be Kiryu, Nishiki, Reina, and Yumi as the best squad ever.... And then literally everything happened..........
He saves this titles for the ones where he just dicks around in the game. His dunkviews are the closest things to serious videos on his channel. P.S The gif that your avatar is based on gives my soul happiness. Then again, anything with Zone does that.
This might just be me, but the story had me hooked almost the whole way through. It made me hella emotional at points, something I wasn't expecting at all.
Honestly though, the game fools you into thinking it pulls punches by letting some characters survive, only to kill them later on in just the right way to heighten tension and make the player realize that shit got real. The campy, absurd parts emphasise the serious scenes in my opinion. I think those moments really cement the setting as a world of eager, hot-blooded people who wear their hearts on their sleeve, and I'd much rather have a lively if somewhat fantastical world instead of a super gritty "realistic" one. Nevertheless, solid points. I give this review five Dunko points out of seven
The thing about REALISM in a lot of games is they forget that light hearted and goofy shit exists irl. It's similar to that whole Real Is Brown issue with a lot of games where they seem to think vibrant colors just don't exist.
jsh020 as a person who just got into the series through Yakuza 0 and was looking forwards to the rest of it, you kind of ruined a lot of the story there :/
Not really, each game tends to have a self-contained story and knowing what happened to the characters before/after doesn't make much difference. I mean at the end of Yakuza 4 Kiryu is fighting Daigo on a rooftop, beginning of Yakuza 5 he's talking to Kiryu as if nothing happened between them. Don't worry about these details being spoilers because Daigo's involvement in Yakuza 4 is so small that he might as well not have been in the game at all, but they needed an end boss for each character.
Your comment was posted 26 minutes ago as I'm typing this. I'm going to go check Metacritic to see whether you're right or not. Edit: You fuckin' liar.
One of the few dunkey videos I don't agree with. I've been playing games since the SNES and after starting on Yakuza 0 this year it jumped up to my top 5 games of all time. The story is amazing, the characters are are great and there isn't a character you can hate. Even the villains (aside from maybe Lao Gui and Dojima) are likeable and full of personality.
I just finished Yakuza 0 last night and finally came back to watch this video I had bookmarked forever so it wouldn't be spoiled. I'm an old man, so previous to this my favorite game ever was prolly Morrowind or Shadowrun on Sega Genesis. About 2-3 hours in Yakuza 0 cemented itself as the greatest game I've played since Morrowind, and that was like 20 years ago. Goddamn I love this game
I'm relatively new to the Yakuza series, and as everyone did, I started with 0. I've had my fair share of video games, either story-driven or skill based, and needless to say 0 is one of my most memorable and best experiences. This is the only game that made me die from laughing because of everything else and actually shed a tear because of the story. One of the best games I have played, for sure.
Goro apparenty the way he is only due to the guy dieing for him having a hard on for fighting. All the villains has nothing on Roy gouda man have legitmant reasons.

finally played this game. It's probably one of my favorite games of all time now. Such absurdity and seriousness all wrapped into 1 game. Loved the story, and I enjoyed Kazuma's journey of how he became the dragon of dojima. The subplots in the main story reminded me of the telanovelas that would play on Telemundo when I was a dumb kid sitting in the living room with my mom. Because of that feeling, it felt like a wave of nostalgia hit me from beginning to end in the most weirdest way possible. I love this game.
I'm so glad Yakuza 0 is getting so much more attention than previous Yakuza games. It's still not much though. Thank you for this video Dunkey as it's what finally made me decide to buy Yakuza 0 a month ago. #MAKEYAKUZA0POPULAR

Dead Dead how I actually played last of us part 2 I didn’t review bomb the game like every one else I spent the 60 bones and played 33 hours and Liked it
Majin Myron I played through it and thought it was okay. The gameplay and level design was definitely a step up from tlou1 but the story was annoying and frustrating beyond belief

3:09 Welcome to July 2020. This song is fucking everywhere. Please help me. Watch many familiar faces recite “dame da ne” again and again, with no end in sight.
As a fan of the yakuza series as a whole, 0 has one of the most memorable and incredible stories just behind 5. If you thought 0 pulled punches, then it's mainly because a lot of these characters are in yakuza 1 and onwards (where they do not pull any punches and cutscene guns are the most dangerous weapon known to man). Imo 0 is a 10/10, but if you ever felt bored by it, please keep playing the series. The series as a whole is a gem
Though I'm 5 years late, all I have to say is that it's a bold thing to give this a 3/5, it's more of a 4.5/5 since I love almost everything about this game including the story, acting, the side missions, and it's fun mini games. The only problem for me is how long it takes to get through to get your special fighting style and heavy amounts of random enemy encounters
I thought dunkey was joking about the karaoke when I first watched this video. But since then I realize I own both Yakuza 4 and 5 and for a solid hour in yakuza 4 I did nothing but karaoke. And now I wish to own ever yakuza game.
Dunkey, you may not see this but when I saw this review I had so much laughter and enjoyment. It was very cool to see how you reviewed the game. And for that reason alone, I bought the game, completed it, all because of you and your review. Thank you for 70 hours of enjoyment from the game.

3/5? Out of all the shit of this year I thought this was a solid 5/5 in my book
I think his rating system is based on all time... so 5/5 would be stuff like Super Mario 64, stuff he really considers a true masterpiece with few or no flaws
This should get a 4-4.5 then
I think that depends on whether a game is judged for what it did during it's timeperiod, and for that SM64 truly deserves nothing less than 4, or for how well it does for today's standards.
JUST finished This game last night and I agree. The story is a damn masterpiece. It's so good. I would've given it at least a 4

"Bizarre systems"
You literally select a point on the -sphere grid- upgrade wheel and press a button. It ain't rocket science.
It's bizarre how the game distributes money. I spent so much time doing the business side stuff and didn't even make a dent in how much the moves cost to upgrade.
videogamedunkey yeah i agree, its like the game forces you to do mr. shakedowns glitch because its impossible
The business gives you enough money to make you overpowered as fuck, without the business you are right though
Yup ! And you do it fo da maneeeey !
Duran Sok "Too much story" Then please explain why Witcher 3 is considered one of the best games ever made?
It has absolutely nothing to do with the volume of story. Some of the most popular games of all time in the west are very story-heavy. Some of them are even Japanese.
Yeah, we hate cutscenes and story and lack of action, that's why RPGs are so popular and games like the original mass effect trilogy and witcher 3 are considered some of the best right? Lol what is it with people trying so hard to denounce their own culture
This video convinced me to play these games.
1000+ hours later, worth every second.
"Then it had me, then it lost me, then it starts reeling me back in, nope! Suitcase."
That sentence is so dunkey-like, but illustrated with Yakuza gameplay, it purely shows that the game was made for him.
Isaac Borg story was pretty great imo
I love hard boiled crime drama, and Yakuza's story is 100% this best you can get for it.
2:31 "You can go BOWLING, and win a *CHICKEN* to be one of your managers. This is real." ~Dunkey
“If only it had a More memorable story” wot?
Let's be real here it suffers from final fantasy 4 syndrome where loads of characters unnecessarily die to make the villain look badass. The story was phenomenal anyway though but shibusawa is possibly the worst villain I've ever seen
matabi shippuden I’ve been looking for a good description of how I felt about that. Thank you. Sagawa and Shibusawa definitely suffer from this.

RJ M I had no idea there were plans for a Yakuza 2 remaster! I never had the chance to play that game! You've made my day! :D
What is even better is that they have made a remake of the game, not just a remaster
Mattheus Henrique Pires Yeah, that's what I meant to say, sorry
I remember hearing Yakuza is very similar to Shenmue, getting the game from the Dreamcast costs money and really hard to find, so I decided to tell my sister to get Yakuza Kiwami for me. And I had a blast playing the game that I recently bought Yakuza 0 to understand the History of the game

Ah. It pulls a reverse Final Fantasy IV; in that game, there's about ten major character deaths, two of which turn out to be real.
almost every character in yakuza 0 is dead by yakuza 3 aside from majima and kiryu.
jsh020 as a person who just got into the series through Yakuza 0 and was looking forwards to the rest of it, you kind of ruined a lot of the story there :/
Not really, each game tends to have a self-contained story and knowing what happened to the characters before/after doesn't make much difference.
"Weak subplots"

One of the few dunkey videos I don't agree with. I've been playing games since the SNES and after starting on Yakuza 0 this year it jumped up to my top 5 games of all time. The story is amazing, the characters are are great and there isn't a character you can hate. Even the villains (aside from maybe Lao Gui and Dojima) are likeable and full of personality.
Yeah, same here with the game. It never goes to "weak sub plots"
One of the best games I have played, for sure.

finally played this game.
