Hazard genuinely seems like a lot of fun, but the numbers are what will matter for the power of this hero, and some things could change in the kit because he has so much, but I enjoy his current setup. Genuinely an enjoyable tank! The numbers will definitely matter.

    • @Machosause
      @Machosause 19 дней назад +19

For the first time in what feels like 4 years, Rein actually plays pretty well into him, and arguably counters him too.
Armor being better against shotguns, the fact that Rein can charge into Hazard's wall without getting booped or damaged, and Rein can keep his sheild up against Hazard without much repercussion, feels like a skill match up that's skewed in Rein's favor, which is rare nowadays.
However, I could say this about most tanks. Doomfist kinda counters Hazard, again because of the wall, but also DF's block gets charged by Hazard's block, and DF's passive out-sustains out-sustains even Hazard's highest dps combos. Junker Queen also counters him for similar reasons: she can easily out-sustain him, counter his one mobility option, shout to make up for any burst he does, and chase him down. Heck, even ball does decent into him if the ball player knows what he's doing. Ball can even just play for sheilding allies, and Hazard can't do much about it. The common theme: Hazard struggles into characters with any ammount of sustain, or who directly benifet from taking damage. Which, yeah, is most tanks.
HOWEVER, I notice he fights squishies better than alot of other tanks. With decent damaging mobility on low cooldowns, a terrain ability, and his block, he's great at 2v1s against, say, a dps and support. This is obviously because he's a dive tank, but, he has enough brawl tank "motiffs" that let him actually *fight* the people he dives, and not just scare them off/burn resources.
Essentially, my feeling is he's going to feel like he has to put twice as much effort into other tanks as you would with most other heros in the role, but do really well against squishies.
My final opinion: He's a hybrid dive/brawl tank done right. As a result, he inherits problems from both, but more so from the dive half (which is how you desgin a good hybrid, have them suffer cons from one half so they don't end up just having the drawbacks of both subclasses). He doesn't do the best into brawly tanks like other divers, but not as bad as them, making most matchups into brawlers neutral or skill (This doesn't include Mauga or Orsia, since both are designed to counter the tank role as a whole). He is better at brawling than other divers, having more damage and tools to fight dps and support players at the cost of the range and speed of his mobility. He fills a very nice playstyle, I don't see him being a go-to pick to counter a specific character or comp, being meta on a specific map, or there being a situation where you say "I need to swap to Hazard", but in a good way. It means people who like playing Hazard can play him in most situations, but it might mean they'll have to put in more effort to achieve things than any other character... It's sorta like ball. The only core kit change I'd make, is I would want him to have a slug shotgun instead of a spread shotgun. We already have 4 shotgun tanks, and Hazard just seems like he should have a more unique cqc weapon.

I think a good sign for Hazard is that every time I got killed by a Hazard, I generally felt like I had just been outplayed rather than a part of his kit having just removed my ability to play against him. Hell, even when playing as Hazard, some other tanks that didn't seem like direct counters could just toss me around (I had a pretty good Doomfist I played against that I just couldn't do anything about lol). Also, while he's tough to kill, like most tanks should generally be at least compared to other roles, he has no direct self sustain as a dive/brawler. Roadhog and Mauga have a lot of self healing, Doomfist and Wrecking Ball have superhealth generation, and JQ has both. Hazard has to be inherently tough because he thrives in a very dive-centric play style and he has no way of healing himself or generating any overhealth. Changing his block too severely would be like significantly nerfing D.va's defense matrix and having played OW Classic, we all know how unplayable that made her (among a few other things lol).

I think they should give him a slug shotgun. A single projectile that would be decently large (think about the size of Bap's alt-fire healing grenades, or Zen's old orb size) with heavy damage falloff. Two options here: If the slug was a phyical projectile like a crystal shard, it would have high bullet drop, and half the damage would be beam damage, so it would go through things like grasp and matrix, but at reduced damage. If the weapon was a full on beam, it would be like a mini Zarya laser with way less range, and a single shot instead of being held down. This could also overpenitrate targets. Both would have a 1.25x-1.4x headshot multiplier. I personally like the physical slug option more.

As a tank player, I think a few numbers adjustments are needed but he feels fair and fun.
The right-click spikes, I can understand dropping the damage slightly, but it's a limited range. Just get out of range.
The ult charges a little too fast maybe. I'd say increasing the cost slightly is fine. Mercy main friend hates that she gets grounded by it but that's a legit counterplay issue.
The wall, though. My non-tank friends have been *screaming* about the wall, and the fact it knocks them around, especially combined with Hazard's own mobility. They think a 12s cooldown is "too short". They think it feels oppressive as hell for someone to set up terrain *and* have the mobility to dive. "oh and a wall climb!" like that's factoring into their out-of-position ass getting killed in our metal-rank QP games.
My takeaway is that I can't *wait* for him to be released, not be OP, and be less popular than Reinhardt and DVa so I don't have to hear them bitch about it every game like this past weekend, instead of actually learning how to deal with him.

Saying that hazard has an overloaded kit is such a disingenuous argument, people saying that dont understand that complexity is something important and that not every character can just be a rein copy where the only thing every tank can do is swing a hammer. And in the end hazard isn’t even that complex, any character can be made to sound like they have the most complex kit ever but playing them for 2 rounds simplifies their kit to a digestible level. Like yeah cassidy has a roll and a flashbang but hazard only has a leap, a wall, and a block when you dumb it down. You can also make Cassidy sound super complicated by saying "Cassidy has an omnidirectional combat roll (that can be used at any time) where any damage he takes is reduced by a significant margin during the active window, a flashbang that slows enemies down and disables/cancels movement abilities of other characters and has his 6 shot revolver that can either fire one by one for steady damage and have the potential for critical damage or can fire all 6 rounds in a burst for less damage per bullet but at a much faster rate with no critical shot capabilities." Characters kits are only as complex as you believe them to be.

Thank you for highlighting the non-mirror match topic because idk what people are on. Was playing role queue and was on support as Ana. Were against a Hazzard, as our tank was also Hazzard. They pushed passed second point on Junkard town and our tank swapped to Doom. Immediately, their team fell apart. Doom all in the backline and their tank unable to actively keep up with our Doom/supps/and DPS. It was night and day. He's not broken. Can be a bit overwhelming in certain comps, but overall flexible and fun to play with and around.

Discussed Hazard's kit with a few friends and the general consensus seems to be that his block, indeed, has too high of a damage reduction. It definitely feels more than even Ram's block, and while it is offset by being a resource, it also does damage and returns some ammo as well. That being said, I also do recognize the argument that if the block is reduced to a lower amount of damage reduction, it is hard to get value out of without blowing up.

It may sound crazy but a very *very* useful use I found for his wall is just throwing it at enemy deployable like Torb’s turrent and Illiari’s pylon. Not only does the wall block them from performing their purpose, but it also actively deals damage to them, potentially ending up destroying them most of the time. Plus with Torb it knocks him back and deals damage to him if he gets too close, preventing him from going to repair his turrent a little as your wall slowly destroys it, but I think it’s great for dealing with Illiari’s pylon, who unironically we didn’t have a lot of characters but Sombra who could deal with the pylon effectively. Hazard can just throw a wall at it and just immediately focus on something else knowing your wall will just destroy the pylon for you.

Most characters in that situation are forced to trade in order to destroy the pylon. Hazard can just throw a wall at it and ignore it.

I would love if the two were shuffled around a bit. for comparison, it currently does 87.5 dps in a 7 meter range WHILE giving 75% damage reduction. winston does 70dps in a 8 meter range. not saying this is a fair comparison, just putting the numbers in perspective.

At 1:00 I disagree with "heroes need to be exciting". that statement is why pure characters are the ones who have the hardest balance system in the game. Rein, widow, pharah, Mcree and such are just focused heroes, no tricks, just damn good for their purpose are, but they are NOT allowed to be great, because they would dominate all the "exciting" characters. Exciting is just another word to say heroes with multiple abilities that makes you feel you are always doing something. Rein just walks with a shield, widow just snipes, pharah just floats shotting rockets and such McCree just ding heads. if these non exciting characters can beat a majority of the roster, then bliz effort for making these active new characters would suffer heavily.

Hazard seems like a tank that THRIVES in the non-tank matchups, didnt play him bc i simply refuse to play tank anymore. But from the bunch of games i played over the wknd it really seems like he is a squishy DELETER and struggles a lot in lower elo hands where they focus too much on the tank v tank matchup. I think the fact he is such a high skill hero, that lower elo players will always complain abt him being broken unless he is literally useless beyond repair. I really like the fact that he is definitely a high skill tank, some hazards just roll and others feed an entire continent LOL. Other than the obvious positional adjustments required bc you arent planning for a jumping scotsman to appear and finish you off when your low. Which COULD lend itself to an issue, as personally ive never liked when tanks have finishing power (I was an off-tank player in ow1 for reference). Personally i think tanks should control space, obviously, but that is through positioning and raw damage a lot of the time now. The tanks that have always felt bad, TO ME, have been the tank with the ability to finish off kills bc that just doesnt feel like what a tank should do. Not saying they should never confirm kills, but when thats their identity it just feels bad bc with their high hp pools that makes them feeling more like fat a dps. All in all, love the character definitely seems like a lot of fun and scales extremely well with skill expression.

To Flat's point about Hazard v other tanks. I was in quite a few matches where I had a non-Hazard tank play into a Hazard, and we'd just get rolled because of the oppressive disruption, damage and tankyness of the character.
I don't mind his damage, what bothers me is just how tanky he is, even with multiple people focusing him. It's made worse if he has pocket healers, which you can say "Well just kill the supports." That would be great if the tank didnt have crazy mobility to peel for the supports and 2 boops. I overall think he's a fine tank and see him fitting into the game, I just think some part of his kit needs to give a little, whether its the tankyness, mobility or the booping he can do.

It’s the VOD on his Twitch channel from the first day he played Hazard, from 3 days ago as of the time I’m writing this. It was a VOD of half OWCS spectating and half of trying the new hero and the timestamp of the play with the Illari not dying while trapped in his ult with the shotgun shoved in her nostril while an Ana nade-heal her is 8:40:52
    Have fun with it. 🤣
FR tho, after looking through a lot of the ult plays through the VOD, you really barely have time to kill 1 yourself only if they are not babysitted by any slightly healing ability. They have to be totally defenseless for you to kill em if they are full hp. I’ll be honest, in that Illari/Ana situation, the outhealing was wayyy busted on this one.

I feel like the combo all Hazards do is Leap -> slash -> auto once -> hold block and let it kill. Doing that kills so much faster but Flats didnt do it.
Hazard is fun but i would nerf him, yes you gotta one up yourself but multiple at once?
Mei's wall + boop + damage + any surface + no max range, multiple climbing chances when Japanese characters get one, Doomfist guard + DOT + reload, Doomfist leap + boop (that can be 2 boops or 2 wall climbs), Ram's pulldown + Junk's trap on a long and wide area + goes through walls (i did manage to block it while looking up as Rein though).
Overloaded kit if you think like this, just need some small tweaks like making the wall smaller with range limit, increase his M1 dmg, lower block dmg or remove reloading, leap gets an extra second of CD, ulti range smaller.
100% higher skill ceiling, needs a brain and plays like doom.

Imagine knowing how to use his kit to space, maneuver, enable your team, and disrupt the enemy team's flow. Your take is just as bad as the people who think he's overpower and underpowered. Like people saying Doomfist sucks or they suck with DF, and then we watch ZBRA play Doom. Yes its early to say, but most of us who been playing this game since OW1 know, a character with this amount of utility and mobility will definitely be strong. Its just gonna take some people longer to show you why he is strong, but that little 5-6 games you played, i noticed you didnt even come close to using him as well as he could be and he is definitely a lot stronger then he is being downplayed. I do agree his skill ceiling will be a lot higher, like a present day Doomfist or OG Winston. He wont be able to go in solo and 1v3 and always win, but he will be able to jump in, cause some chaos long enough to get something out of and still be able to escape and survive; but he will have it rough 1v1 against other tanks, but everything else he brings will overshadow some of the flaws that were brought up. For instance, his spiked wall ALONE will create so much in a short time for the team to make a play before the enemy can react. Start playing around that more as a shield, as a platform like in OG Fornite, as a tool to initiate a fight, as just a simple obstacle for the enemy to play around, and watch how much more value you get from him when your teammates can also land their shots and combo with you. He's one of the characters that doesnt necessarily get free value from anything...cept maybe his ult... that ult kinda OD. Top 5 ults in the game for sure and he hasnt even be released yet.

While thinking about how he should be released in terms of any nerfs this morning, I heard you saying 99% of this in my head 😭. I agree I feel like if you nerfed any of his *toolkit* he’d quickly feel weaker and weaker ruining how fun/ strong he feels in game. Loved your point on dvas flight being just as often as his jump. Feels similar and I wouldn’t want it any worse. Only thing I’d consider nerfing is his ult, being essentially a shatter only he has high movement, should take a lot longer to get. Essentially he’ll be strong throughout the whole game but most other heroes will beat him to/ in the ult fight. I think he’s fantastic as is, and in high ranks, where most players have a brain and the supports are healing players so they don’t die, he won’t be detrimental. When I faced a bad team with him, I rolled, when I faced a good team, I still had a lot of fun but many times I jumped in and looked like blocking Doomfist without cds 😭 similar to Genji oddly in terms of, he’s awesome if the enemy doesn’t do anything about it, but he can look stupid vs a good team. He’s fun, very fun, doesn’t have anything I quite despise, besides for having a shatter with all the movement, so as I said, make it so it takes him forever to get his ult

Instead of the wall and instead of autofiring the needles when defending id rather they have him absord the damage (instead of block 80% damage, its absorb 80% of damage to fuel another ability). Doomfist has something similar with his punch. Eventually it will reach some kind of maximum needle damage launch based on the damage he takes and have the choice to esentially launch the damage back at the enemies. The projectiles should move a bit faster and launch faster and have a bit more range. This would make a unique tank that punishes group fights and fights which include dogpiling the tank. It would make more flanky characters be far more conservative with their movement abilities as well. Say he has a maximum output of 250 per person in his range over 1.5 seconds with needles that move much faster but you can break line of sight on them or shield it. It needs to be enough to kill non tanks who dont have healing or the ability to cut line of sight. He would have to take/absorb like 325 damage to reach that 250 per person in range max output. There is no tank that punishes focusing them too much too fast and most characters dont have a group punishment unless its an ultimate like reapers. Id also have it so that the absorbed damage would eventually start cooling off if he has not been hit in a while so you cant just hold the charge to initiate a fight. This would also make typical tank busters less useful against him but other damage heros better against him so there is more counter swap choice for the tank. There are not enough tanks that can force counterswaps into damage heros that are weak against the ones your team chose when your team wont counter swap. Id also have it such that if you activated the needles at full charge and entered block the damage absorbed would be replensihing the pool of needles mid ability (eg. The nore you shoot him while he is in combo the more needles he would launch and the longer he would launch them for making the first tank that punishes people who dont stop the engagement. It would be a tank that uniquely takes space more efficently depending on how much the enemies try to stop him mid combo. Most tanks punish individual stubborness if they are not just pure threat factor, this would be a tank you is a tank not necessarily because his own health or because enemies are out of place and can be picked. This would be a tank that forces a complete disengage for a short period of time in a manageable way by making it so the only solution is to stop shooting him until either the needle charge pool is gone or the block has run out. If the pool runs out there needs to be a cooldown so it cant be fired off repeatedly. Its not like a DVA ult that forces a disengage because an instakill being a guarentee. If forces a disengage by scaling damage on enemies depending on group aggression from their part. This would make him a hard counter in close combat to reapers and bastions if the reaper and bastion screw up their cooldowns at all. It would be anti backline and force more long range combat on him.

Queen: a high damage low health tank whose survivability relies on u hitting her abilities and has decent combos.
Ram: a hero who can switch between poke and brawl, and ignores shields. Very slow and fair gameplay, no oppressive or high burst damage potential. Maybe his block but then again he has to be able to take a lot of damage, can’t do anything else during it, and uses up critical nemesis time
Hazard: a high mobility and skill character whose whole kit can combo with itself, adding who knows how much depth and potential, but only if u have both the mechanical, technical, and hero specific knowledge to pull it off. And even then it’s not incredibly oppressive at all, especially for a hero who’s almost entire kit is CC

so far i have 4 hours total played on Hazard and i somewhat have to agree with Flats, especially at higher skill levels of play hes actually easily counterable by most of the other tanks and basically any character with CC, especially tanks like ex:Dva, orisa, sigma, due to them either having equal levels of mobility or someway of denying you ie orisa spear or sigma anti gravity.
Hes definitely more of a challenge but its also heavily dependent on the map and gamemode. Each map depending on its style and positioning has insanely different play styles for Hazard.
Sometimes you're basically playing a shield tank with mei wall taking damage and focus off of your team or youre trying to push for picks; He feels mobile enough where you can definitely save yourself from situations where a tank like doom would be deleted.
TLDR: if your team knows how to position themselves and use their CC properly its difficult to get picks due to his left click not doing as much damage as say queen but he feels fair compairing him to a hero like Doomfist of which he would be the closest comparison i could make. He can definitely get picks but if they have strong supports and well controlled CC you get countered. I 100% would like to see him in competitive play and see how he actually fairs against a non hazard focused comp

I think Hazards issue from his primary being a rectangle weapon spread, the first character I've ever seen shoot horizantal rectangles of damage, in a game where the majority of the cast is quite small. So he's missing at least 30% of his shots when shooting squishies, but he also struggles up close with most other tanks, and yeah they buffed him on release but he feels like an off tank from overwatch 1, as if they were scared to make him too strong like release Mauga, or too weak so they left him underbaked. I mostly play tank and he feels like you only have 250 hp, he feels more reliant on supports than any other character in the game, he's quite large and has a big hit box, but he isn't nearly as fast as other tanks with a similar jumping on you playstyle, even if he has the jump on you 90% of self heal buttons or movement abilities are more than enough to negate any surprise attack he can inflict. All in all he feels very bad against every hero, his ult still feels underwhelming dude to how many ways it can be blocked, and he's definitely the easiest tank to counter in a long time, and with tank being the most counterswapped role it happens constantly and feels even worse compared to every other hero in the game.
Still a very fun tank and I'm hoping he ends up finding his place in the game, maybe people will learn to play around him and as him better, but as it stands now he feels very niche and other tanks do what he does better without dying as easily.

I want leap to allow more vertical angles and go a bit farther when done vertically (it cuts it much shorter distance than his horizontal one). Since his wall climb is limited it just feels kinda clunky getting up high.
I think the slash after should a bit more damage. Around 100 instead of 80, with a larger of a hitbox considering he has to manually aim it and there isn't a wall bounce bonus like doom punch or crit multiplier like mauga stomp. Hell even JQ abilities heal her.
I think his left click spread should to be tightened and damage falloff adjusted to start at 20m so it's not as much of a shotgun and works a bit better with his kb abilities. Since he boops you around so much. Along with giving him a bit more midrange when they aren't in block range. I think the damage is lowkey fine considering 8 bullets and block auto reloading.
In turn? Block should do a bit less damage/damage reduction but has less move speed penalty. To keep him feeling a bit more fluid in battle.
Right now, despite being fun, he feels like a bad dive/brawl tank. Having to borderline all in to get 1 kill. So you'd need help to confirm kills. But he's a bit too slow to really jump someone or keep up with the fast characters.

As someone who plays a lot of Mercy, my main issue with the ult is the fact it doesn't have a skybox cap- I could be at the top of the map bumping the boundaries and he will still yoink me. I understand how it makes since because they're crystals literally shooting from the sky to pin but it always messes me up when I am in qp. T_T
It also reaches super duper far and through walls.

There might be a world where the right balance patches hit and Hazard is a dive staple. But with Winston existing, this will probably just be another Doom-esk character people go crazy deep with. Should be fun

Like every other tank without a shield, he gets dunked on by Ana and Zen, so that drains the fun real quick. But other than that, he has his moments.

I'm glad some other major voice is pointing out how underwhelming his shotgun is. This is something I mentioned elsewhere, but it has a rectangular pattern (as opposed to the circular pattern on other heroes), which just adds to it feeling awful. Most shotgun heroes can comfortably aim towards the center of mass and net solid dmg (regardless of hit box) bc of it...this shotgun by design (at least currently) is more effective with wider hit boxes.

I’m happy with how he is now.
He is a hero through and through. Some heroes feel Shooter-first instead of Hero-Shooter.

From my experience, the one thing I'm quite scared about with Hazard is that he's another tank that is very all in on his cooldown cycles getting value and that makes him very vulnerable to counter picking just like Ball or Doom. I have found extremely hard to get any value into Zen + Brig or Ana, stuff like Orisa or JQ, but worst of all Reaper. There is genuinely nothing you can do against reaper. He heals more than you damage him, he can chase you, you can't chase him, and he can just play close to his teammates and you can never engage them either because you will explode. So I think I'd advocate for the same thing that I do with ball or doom which is to shift some of their value from cooldown to their weapon to make these counters a little bit easier to deal with

The bots don't even need to jump off. If they can't find a path, they can simply self-destruct. It's funny to play with the bots, for example, taking them to another universe with Junkrat or Roadhog.

The damage on the shotgun is quite high, but doesn’t translate well at all to the practice range. The big difference makers for why you don’t get those rooted kills are the wide horizontal spread and the slow rate of fire. An un-scoped Ana can fire almost as quickly as you can, and the difference between point blank in practice range and nearly point blank in game is missing a third to a quarter of your shot if you’re on the move. Same with the spike guard - it deals a ton of AOE damage, but the rate of fire is pretty abysmal . Hazard presents a ton of strong tools that pump out insane damage, but also present very strong weaknesses to be exploited , so I think he’s going to be one of the most fun tanks to play as, with and against

9:55 that's more Ana healing than anything else. Maybe Baptiste can get close to that too but I didn't have any luck with any other support character trying to save people from the root (other than Suzuing before the ult hits).
I do also think it'd probably be better to either nerf/remove his headshot modifier and increase the base pellet damage on the primary... but that's probably just a personal take. I think shotgun headshot modifiers are just goofy.
