    I’m a retired vet, 68 yo, started sailing when age 16, on a 26’ keeled, Contender, on Chickmaugua Lake, in Tennessee. Sailed more and bought a catamaran in Hawaii. Found blue water and ocean currents would need some serious schooling…no time. Sold it. Can’t seem to get rid of the itch, so, I watch RUclips and the duck regatta…. Thanks for sharing…from east Tennessee.

    In Tea gardens there is a nautical themed house on your right as you drive in. The owner has a houseboat that looks like a floating rustic tin shed. You know provided you have the fuel you can get from Port Stephens to the ferry - the ferry is taken down that route every few years for slipping. Also you can also give a go on cardboard riding down the sand dunes near the beach. If you are really keen you can go behind the break at Hawkes Nest that's where the 6m Great White Congregate during the day (about 30-50m) from the swimmers.
    Question for video: How high are the boats on trailers? Which models can you get in a standard garage to keep them out of the weather.
    Question 2: Boat sleeping videos - tips and tricks.

      Thanks Andrew, I have paddled my Kayak from Hawkes nest to the ferry and also from Bulahdelah to Rivermouth. Both great and would love to do it in Kate Louise but not sure about recharging my electric outboard, should I run out of juice. Thanks for the suggestions....noted , cheers Paul

    Perfect sailing trip to enjoy from the couch. Glass of red. Balmy Christmas Eve. Thanks so much Paul, I know the effort that goes into these. Wish I could join you- maybe the time will come around as all good things seem to do. Had to content myself with tweaking my standing rigging and learning to fly a drone! I could easily see you guys mobilising yourselves for a trip to Tassie some time. Blessings Chris.

      Heh Chris, have you moved to Tassie permanently? We often talk about spending time in Tassie, Martin wants us to do a Raid on the Tamar ( he lived in Tassie for a while) but the ferry is quite prohibitive as you know. Probably about 3K return, which is out of the reach of a lot of guys. Anyway see you at the next Wooden boat festival, are you going to do the Tawe Nunnagah? Gary from the Melbourne Raid did it last year. Have a great Christmas and new year, cheers Paul

      @@SailingKateLouiseI grew up in Launceston. We moved up to the sunny coast 13 years ago. My wife’s health meant we needed to get back close to family. Then Sarah Ann turned up in my yard and I knew I had to return her to Tassie. May is a great time and cheaper on the ferry. Bit cooler than you are used to but sublime conditions in the river. The Tamar is underrated. I’m in the recess of changing that. Merry Christmas. Cheers Chris.

    Very enjoyable, what you do and how you do it suits me fine! Regarding ideas - I watch a lot of wild camping, and `Going Solo` is an American guy who cooks some amazing meals in a tent on a little camp stove. It is interesting and educational to see what can be done with one burner and a little forward planning. The other thing is if you could investigate converting an open dinghy (I have a Wayfarer) to a cuddy cabin?

    Another nice dinghy adventure Paul .. looking forward to our summer (July) Salish 100 up here in Puget Sound.
    I enjoy you new boat n new Skipper interviews as well as campfire briefs. Sail bys describing other boats, rigging n so on. Yours n other skippers menus interesting as well.
    I like seeing your sunsets n rises as well as the weather chips n challenges Down Under .. seeing mates bathing n swimming is so different from our chilly Puget Sound “Polar Bear dips up here.
    The challenge of New n fresh stuff is always going to be there. Giving us the humor of each n pitfalls I enjoy.
    Nurture (bugs, birds, lizards n so so on) sure fatten up .. I’m away listening for the “ bell birds n other “ in the sound track as well as the lapping n swishing of water against n past the haul.
    With loosing my sweetheart n mate of 56 yrs I’m looking forward to new adventures but without her support.. I enjoy your mention occasionally of your wife too. She’s part of the memories supporting our mouncho (sp) getting out n meeting the challenges of sailing n water.
    Seeing the one fellow retrieving that old boat n getting out sure gives me the Will to push on n sail my Monty 17’er.

    Hi Paul, not really related to this video, but was wondering if you could do a video on tacking and gybing on the Kate louise with the dipping lugsail and the jib. Also a bit about how to best trim to suit a Stornaway.
    Love watching yours and the other videos from the Sydney raid group.

    • @SailingKateLouise
      @SailingKateLouise  6 месяцев назад +1

      Great suggestion! Neil. My lugsail is not a dipping lugsail so the mainsail stays one side of the mast , whichever tack you are on. This means one tack is less efficient as the luff is against the mast. A dipping lugsail would be very fiddly to tack singlehanded. As far as tacking and gybing , it's the same as a Bermudan rig....the mizzen is self tacking, though when Gybing I tend to manhandle the mizzen boom across, so it puts less stress on the gooseneck. As far as trim, the lugsail would not be quite as flat as a Bermudan Jib and Mainsail. So the speed is there with shape but high pointing is sacrificed. However the newer version of the Stornaway 18 to be made in the states, will have more ballast, a deeper skeg keel with a more modern profile and wings. This will increase it's speed and pointing ability. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul

    Another great video Paul, thoroughly enjoyed watching that. Almost as good as being there.
    I was surprised to see what I think may be the Investigator #152 Jolly Roger that Dad owned for many years.
    We did it up, sat it on a new trailer and sold it about 7 years ago.
    Gary’s Investigator had the same rubber gunwale that we fitted and I’m guessing it’s the same boat?

    Hi again, as to your request for ideas for videos..... I'm a motor boater, however as i watch more of your , and others, sailing videos, I am entertaining the idea of a trailer sailer.. could you maybe integrate some basic sailing info in your future videos as of this moment, there are too many ropes and sails for me to contemplate lol. yes i know there are many "how to" videos out there, however adding snippets on a channel such as this would make the learning more relevant, if you know what i mean. Frank from Syd

      Hi Frank, I will try and incorporate some sailing tips. I always thought my viewers were sailors and I didn't want to state the obvious, but if that's not the case, then yes I will work in some basic sailing tips, cheers Paul

    Although it was a shame the group split, it’s good to see everyone taking responsibility for their own boat and crew.

      @@SailingKateLouise I have to finish my VHF course/license (annoying given I'm a pilot and can talk to Sydney radar but apparently not marine rescue) and get a radio installed before my offshore minimum requirements are complete, then absolutely. Happy new year :-).

      Hi well some have Navionics which is $35 per year on their phones, which is not too bad. I don't have it as I'm more worried about dropping the phone in the water. Josh has dropped his a couple of times but it still works...an Iphone I think. I hope to see you on the water , cheers Paul

      Hi, Dave has bought a Tophat 25 which he is working on, as he wants to do offshore cruising. I think he still has the Cherry but he hasn't sailed with us for 6 months, hopefully he will come on a raid in the new year, cheers Paul

    Boom or no boom which is the easiest to handle?

    • @SailingKateLouise
      @SailingKateLouise  6 месяцев назад +1

      No boom, (lugsail) but it doesn't point as well and therefore not as efficient as a Marconi rig. The newer version of the Stornaway 18 will have a soft batten at the foot of the mainsail to act as a soft boom. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
