For the glass it is the cheapest tempera paint available. This is a common paint used in elementary schools for kids. For the white tile method you need a paint with titanium oxide in it. This usually is found in white paints.
It seems to me that if you can engrave glass with your 20 watt laser at 60%, one could probably engrave glass with a 10 watt laser at 100%, perhaps a bit slower. What do you think? Your tempera paint technique is very attractive.

When you laser the glass how did you get the white color? I love the project and am trying to learn. I did a pie plate but it’s difficult to see the etching because it’s clear unless I have a dark backround
I would try using a white paint, if you intend on eating on the plates it could be bad idea,, as thhe food and such will get into the engraving, another thing that works on glass or plates, is T-O Titanium-Oxide, comes in powder form and you mix it with anything from water to paint thinners, I used plain alcohol as it helps the drying time, as anything you use it needs to be put on thick, so several coats work better.
The laser basically chips the glass away. It does etch the glass so that you could add paint. Not sure if it would wipe off when cleaning the surface of the glass. Because it etches the glass it may have rough edges and give you a crisp clean look.
@@jhnbrown5 oh yea! it cleans with just running water over it ,, but if you use your finger or a rag you can speed up the clean, but it is so easy,, I love using it ,, right now I have gone to trying to get good engravings with Titainium Oxide, it comes in powder form and you can mix it with anything, I want it to dry fast so I am mixing it with alcohol and then using the airbrush method, I happen to have about 4 of them laying around, it works great like this Tempure paint, dollar store , BUT this T-O leaves you engrave black and it shows up better than the clear etch,, still trying to get the perfect speed and power down right now , as he did in this video,, You need to make a good thick coating on whatever you do, thin coats just don't work well- for me anyway, Oh yea and it washes off with water easy..

can we engrave on acrylic using 20w or 15w DIY laser ? and we have to paint it black too? why can not we engrave transparent acrylic directly with 20w laser?
Yes, you can engrave. Dark colors are best. The diode laser just shines through the clear acrylic. I have shown engraving on acrylic by actually engraving on the metal below the acrylic and it will burn onto the acrylic

Can you etch glass deep enough with a diode laser to paint the glass, wipe it off, and have paint left in the etch?
The laser basically chips the glass away. It does etch the glass so that you could add paint. Not sure if it would wipe off when cleaning the surface of the glass. Because it etches the glass it may have rough edges and give you a crisp clean look.
Thank you very much !!! you are a master !!!
Thank you very much
Thanks, that makes perfect sense.
It works well
Thanks for the information I will be trying this Ty subbed and liked 👍
Awesome, let me know how it goes
Great video! Will it work with a 7W Jtech laser and can I do it on plexiglass?
Yes it will work. The plexiglass not so much. I would use cast acrylic rather than plexiglass. I have shown how to get the image onto the acrylic
I love your Channel Paw Paw! Can you please post your Light burn setting in Millimeters?
Ok, I’ll convert it for you.
To convert this to mm is easy. There are 25.4 mm in 1 inch. Therefore, 25.4 x 30 = 762. Where 30ipm.
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thank you Sir!
Great video Sir!!! Maybe I missed it but did you engrave the glass that was spray painted? If so, did you get similar results? Thanks!
The next video will have the sprayed one. I used it for a baseline to see the tempera paint results compared to the spray
@@PawPawsWorkShop 😉 got it!!
What is the name of the spray paint? Tempera paint, does it wash off easily with water?
Hola tengo una neje master 3 plus y compre pai de 0,3 y 0,5 mm para hacer stencils pero equivocadamente compre de color blanco y buscando porque no se cortaba vi tu video. Hay alguna forma de cortarlo?
Why would some of the tempera paint be burned into the etching of the glass after the engraving?
Another great tutorial. But you started with two glass blanks, one sprayed with flt black and the other rolled and then brushed with Tempura. Which worked best and was shown? What happened to the other?
I like your tutorials because you separate the FACTS from the superstitions. Nicely done.
I showed you what worked best in the video. The other example was ok but not as good as the one I showed in the presentation
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thanks for the great information and your fast response to my question. Your RUclipss are very useful.
@Paw Paw’s WorkShop
Thank you.
You’re very welcome
How did you get the paint off after you etched it to reveal the clear glass and etched image?
I used tempera paint which is water based. The paint washes off very easily
Brilliant tutorial, can i ask if the spray paint you used was oil based or water based?
The spray black was just rustoleum and it did not work as well as the tempera paint that I brushed on
@@PawPawsWorkShop I can't get Tempera in Ireland, Is it acrylic based?
No, it’s a very cheap paint that is often used in elementary school for art projects
Congratulations on your videos!
I have a question, how to engrave in white ABS using engraving with DIODE? I need to engrave on some boxes
White ABS? Are you referring to PVC? You should not engrave! TOXIC.
Did you ever try a piece of vinyl on the glass and laze that?
can we engrave on acrylic using 20w or 15w DIY laser ? and we have to paint it black too? why can not we engrave transparent acrylic directly with 20w laser?
Yes, you can engrave. Dark colors are best. The diode laser just shines through the clear acrylic. I have shown engraving on acrylic by actually engraving on the metal below the acrylic and it will burn onto the acrylic
If I have a 40w laser (atom stack A5 pro) would I still use 60% power or would I do 30% for the same 12w power?
Great starting point. Adjust and test to get it just right
Hello I wanted to ask what software program you use and with what settings you cut acrylic because it doesn't work for me. Thank you!
Lightburn is the software. This project is glass. The settings will vary due to the hardness of the glass. You must test
Hello, I am a newbie at this. I have a we creat blue laser 20 w. I use the Make it software and don't use the lightburn. Is it similar?
It is similar. With the Make it software you have pre-tested grid for recommended settings. It still will require some testing
Thank you Paw Paw
My pleasure
Hey,
Excellent and very effective video. I learned a lot.
Forgive me for the stupid question. I'm new to this field.
How did you wash the black paint off the glass after it dried?
I would greatly appreciate your answer. and thanks a lot.
The tempera paint is water soluble and washes off easily
how long did it take to dry? I am trying it out right now and is still wet after about an hour, so I am letting it dry in room temperature overnight, hope it is dry in the morning. I did one thicker coat to get it opaque in one coat.
Tempera paint should dry within a few minutes. Maybe a half hour at most
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thank you!!!
What was the point of putting paint on first. Wouldn't the laser etch the glass anyway?
The diode laser needs to have the paint to focus on. Without the paint the light would go directly through the glass
What is the actual engraving power of your laser? 3 watts? Found it... 5.5 watts optical... thanks!
On a 20 watt input you generally get about 5.5 watts output
My engraving will always be a little grey and not very white.
You have some tipps for me?
Thank you
Experiment. Try a little thicker paint. Experiment with different settings. Layers of paint can make a big difference
The grid you have below, did you buy it on the internet? Thanks
The grid is just a cookie cooling rack
Spray the glass with spray on chalk and let it dry. Engraves wonderfully, washes right off with water, cheap.
Yes that is a very good alternative. Thanks for watching my videos
I've seen that, it's the cleanest and easiest I've seen. This one he did is perfect though and tempera paint is 1.25. The chalk isn't cheap.
Does the paint have to be black? I have a bucket of dark royal blue acrylic based paint, could I use that?
Those paints should be ok.
Hellow sir. Your videos are really amazing. Am new to this been practising engraving on wood.but after seeing your videos I would love to try this. My question is can I do this with a 5.5 W laser diode ???
These descriptions of laser power are deceiving. Its 20 watt electrical power, 5 watt laser.
Why do you coat your glass first? I have laser engraved glass exactly once just to see what it did. I dint cover it and it cam e out decent. Curious to know what I am missing.
What was the color of the wasteboard underneath the glass? The laser was keying in on that color
What was the point of using the spray paint? Why didn’t you show washing the tempera off the glass after engraving? How does burning the paint away actually etch the glass?
Focal point for the laser
