As many others here have said THANK YOU SIR for taking time to help noobies like me get started in this fantastic hobby.! The compass tile you did in this video is a true work of art! Thank you once again for sharing!
I hear what you're saying but I usually reserve the term "work of art" for something that's made by hand using hand tools. They can be electric, but hand tools all the same. Sometimes the Art comes from the difficulty of the project. Laser cutting is not difficult at all. Grandmother's do it. I'm a traditional woodworker and Craftsman, but I also use laser engravers, and I consider the two things entirely different. Having said that, can you make art with a laser engraver. Yes you can. But that art comes from the designing. A simple compass like this laser etched on a tile (while cool) doesn't qualify. I think if you asked most craftsmen who also use laser engravers they would agree. The only people that think they're making art with CNC machines are people that have no real skills, or real artist that can design extremely detailed and intricate designs. This is in no way a criticism of this channel. Just as someone who's been an artist for 30 years now I want to make sure we differentiate between the two, before real Art is lost. We are already on the edge of that cliff.
The lighter S was the first thing engraved, often laser engraver have heat issues where the laser puts out lower laser power until it warms up. The result is that the start of the engraving is dodgy. One solution is to do a small throw-away engraving immediately before the main engraving, so the laser is properly hot when the main engraving starts. Another solution is to check and adjust/repair the electronic laser driver, and I remember one case of this working well with a 40w tube laser. So it's a warm-up issue. Hope that helps. 🙂
Thank you very much for the video, this method is a very interesting and unexpected solution!I am happy to subscribe to your channel and look forward to new works! You are a very smart and creative person, a friendly greeting from a simple person from Russia!
Hi great video i did one tile using the same spray, which come out lovely and dark nice deep engrave then i did another but it come out grey not dark as previous you can still feel the embossing the same depth into the tile, have i over or under sprayed the paint or not let it dry long enough im puzzled same exact settings were used on both my tiles
I gave this a try and was surprised at the outcome. I took a photo ran it through a sketch app, then loaded into Lightburn. I like it better than painting the tile black then lasering. Thanks
Possibility for the bottom of the S is that the laser has not fully started to fire. Often have to run a quick small file to get the laser fully firing before running any work files when starting the laser for the first run of the day.
I looked up the laser diode in the video and the specs say "operating range 40-75'C", so the problem is almost definitely a warm up issue and can be worked around as you suggested. I googled around and found a PhD thesis "A novel laser diode wavelength stabilisation technique..." by Abdullah Asmari. The thesis claimed wavelength is dependent on temperature (due to thermal expansion of the relevant micro geometries), and so initially poor engraving action could be due to an unsuitable wavelength at ambient temperatures. However, it's also quite possible that the 40'C minimum temperature marks the lowest input value of the control algorithm that produces normal power outputs. It should be possible to develop experiment tests to determine whether the wavelength or control system effect is the main contributor
I’ve found after cleaning mirrors and adjusting any to center. If still lighter on one end the height maybe needed adjustment so I made fully adjustable bed on all corners. But now that I write this sounds like you got it lol nice video by the way keep it up
Thank you for your video's ! In this video I learned that to convert mm to inches and vice versa when setting the speed using lightburn , you just go to the setting box and select the opposite of what your using for speed and go back to your work and it shows what the number is ether way . Thanks I have been wanting that information . This will make it so when other people post there setting you can easily see what they are as per the settings you use. Keep up the good work !
I had added a comment about why you use paint but, I started looking at the other comments and saw it had been asked and answered. What would the tile look like if you did not use any paint. Would it just stay white or would you still get a black engraving but just be much lighter. I would love to see a video of something simple engraved on tile without any paint just to see what it looks like. Thanks and great video.
Nice work on this. I have been doing this and similar processes on tiles for a while now. More recently, I have been working with colored paints and multiple layers. Some of the results have turned out very nice. Keep up the great work.
Hi The problem with the (S) usually is due to maladjustment on the mirror of the laser if yours have mirrors, when you engrave in the top part that won't happen but as the laser goes down and get far the laser will start hitting less centered on the pointer inner hole, an adjustment on the mirrors leaving the pointer on the bottom right of the engraving space of the machine should fix it, I had probably done this easy fix 20 times with my machine Best Luck Fixing it
Thank you for answering a few questions before I could ask. I've seen many of these tiles videos and almost everyone talks about removing underlying paint color. The tiles are painted for two reasons. The ceramic tile will reflect the laser and not burn and the second reason is that the laser is burning the paint causing it to oxidize and embed into the ceramic. The black is a result of the chemical reaction with the laser and the paint.

Yes, you should feel the etch in the tile
I have an XTool D1Pro 10w and tried this and it does not come out black more like a silver-ish color. How do you get it to be black?
i cant get mine to look good at all. 15 watt otur master 2.. cant get it black. to bad i cant post pic of it here. im i laying the paint on too thick? i have also used titanium dioxide and not getting anything either. i wonder if im laying that on too thick? any advise, please. thanks for video.
Is there a specific reason you used the paint? Was it simply for masking, or does it serve another purpose? Can I just use making tape instead?
Yes, the paint has titanium oxide in the paint. That is what reacts with the laser. You can purchase titanium oxide and mix it with alcohol and spray the mixture on the tile.

Hello! Very nice work. I’ve been trying to get this one done but can’t seem to get it to come out dark enough. I’ve tried all up and down the scale and can’t seem to get it as dark as yours. I do not have air assist. Any suggestions??
What paint are you using?
I would love to see what your settings are for the same process using the XTool D1 laser. I think the XTool is out doing the FoxAlien in my tests.
Out doing Foxalien in performance? Cost? Or user friendly?
Because the software isn't made by either company.
Such a great tip. Thank you!
Thank you
Great job. That really looks clean! Do you have to use white paint? What will other colors do?
The paint must have titanium oxide in it to work
Great video thanks.
I've tried this method and it goes through the glaze, is this normal?
Yes, this is normal. It is permanently etched into the ceramic

Very informative, thank you for posting 👍
Thank you very much
Awesome results. The tile was white originally. You then painted it white. Did the resulting black engraving come from the laser burning the tile? What was the purpose of painting the white tile white.
The chemicals in the paint oxidizes and burns into the til
@@PawPawsWorkShop can you use acrylic paint?
I like the idea of centering the laser in the middle of a piece, but how does that work? I guess I don't understand. I did a search to no avail.
I engraved on blue tile worked great when I engrave on white tiles it doesn’t burn black how do I get it to burn black
