I would read that so fast! I've watched you for a couple years now, and you have been integral in my career as a fitness coach, and now as a software engineer. You and I are similar in the sense that we love to teach and help others live more fulfilling lives. Now I'm pursuing that freedom so I can do that too! Hopefully I'll be up there with you someday, helping thousands and millions of people make the most of the opportunities they have in front of them. I would consider myself lucky. You go Ali, you have a huge calling ahead of you, make the most of it 😁 🍀
I'm only 30 & I've switched careers 3 times, but I've never been happier. Life is too short to not do what you love, or to find your purpose. Props to you Ali for standing up for what you want & going for it.
people like you are the coolest people ! ✌🏼 people who take responsibility over their own happiness and dont stay in their one career bc of exterior reasons and stay bitter forever. i'm 22 and you inspire me to not be afraid to potentially consider something else
Thank you so much for your vulnerability in discussing this. I recently left my profession as a nurse practitioner to pursue growing my own RUclips channel doing patient education on a scale so much larger than I could seeing patients and I’ve felt ALL of these things. It’s so validating to hear someone I respect a lot battling through all of the same things. Excited to see you figure out what’s next! 🍀
After 20 years of physician job in USA, I took early retirement at age 50 when my investment return was about 5 times of my job income. It was not easy decision to leave a job I love. But a life of self-reliance is more rewarding experience. All physical illness and mental stress related issue vanished after couple of years of retirement. Meanwhile investment wealth keep growing with snowball effect. Life is good.
That moment when he said, "If you're a medical student and you want to unsubscribe, that's totally cool," I felt so touched. When I was trying to learn how to manage the stress of medical school, I saw one of your videos and that really provided useful tips. Since then, I've turned a big fan, and I don't really care if you're a doctor or a RUclipsr or you are just chilling in Maldives all day making videos about it. All the best, Ali. ❤️
During my med school applications I always come back to this video to make sure that medicine is what I want to do and even now I still come back to watch the video, there are many valuable information and lessons just in these 40 minutes.☘
I love the part at the end where you weren't afraid to own up to your decision and addressed the person who said the only reason they were watching you was because of you being a doctor/RUclipsr. It just shows how powerful we can be if we stop caring about pleasing other people or living for them. Love your authenticity!
I am 1 month away from becoming a certified doctor and I have decided to quit medecine after I graduate , at least for now . It's just not for me and I realised it a few years ago but I kept pushing in the hopes of me changing my mind but also because of how scared I was to walk away from somthing I dedicated 7 years of my youth to , watching this video was kinda healing because it felt good to hear the thoughts and feelings I couldn't explain myself being explained in a very thoughtful way , thank you so much .
I'm a teacher at a public school and I'm just disrespected every single day. While I do still love teaching, it's just hard to go through these mental breakdowns. I've been thinking of teaching privately and wanting to really invest time on blogging which I started in the past but stopped for X reasons. Watching your videos are really making me consider it once again. I bought the book you recommended SHOW YOUR WORK and I can't wait to read it!
So excited for you in going all in on this decision to SERVE and Save LIVES and help millions of people every year using the skills and knowledge you’ve developed to teach all of us how to grow and improve. Can’t wait to see what you create with all this extra time and energy and excited to connect in person in the next 6 months to see how much you continue to grow :)
I’m sorry but I’ll have to respectfully disagree, I get it you guys hangout in the same circles and there’s a general sense of grandiose attached to the work you do - but plis! You’re not saving any lives. You’re not somebody revolutionary - there are thousands teaching the same thing, preaching the same thing. Yes this makes more economical sense for you - congrats. But don’t lie to yourself to belief that your work has more impact than actual scientists, doctors and engineers. You guys are ENTERTAINERS - who try to be informative - while making tonnes of money. THATS IT. Accept it for what it is
@@saswatsatapathy658 they don't claim to be better than being doctors though. If you watch Ali's interview with Lewis, you might have a better perspective on this situation, and why Lewis says that perhaps for Ali it's better to follow his calling to a different path in life :)
I’m at a breaking point right now. Everything is so overwhelming. Being a doctor was never for me but because of income problems I had to choose med school, I’m in my third year and I can’t stop thinking that I’m spending my youth for a job that I don’t want. I wanted to be a scientist. I was in love with the idea of learning about the universe. But what I’m doing right now is “memorizing drug names”. I don’t know yet but I’m considering going for a neuroscience phd in a better country after graduation. Actually if I had a choice I would leave everything behind and travel. The world offers too much to only stick around the same area. Wish it was not this hard…
I totally know what you mean because I'm going through something pretty similar. I had to go for med school because I had no more options and I basically was chasing a lifestyle and not a passion since I knew I could be able to make enough money to live pretty well in the future and tweak some things. But the truth is that there's so much out there I wanna do and medicine is soo freaking time consuming and overwhelming it makes me feel like maybe I'm not doing things the right way and I should risk it all and stop trying so hard to be successful on people's eyes and live up to their expectations and society's, and instead just follow my dreams and figure things out throughout the journey
Same problem :( i am third grade at med school. In our country doctors dont earn salary that we can call "enough for a doctor". For example an ophtalmologist says that he earns only 800$ :(( And there is violence against to doctors. There is 36 hour watch :( because of these watches doctor Rümeysa Şen has died in a traffic accident that she couldn sleep after night watch. Because you have to continue to work after watches. It makes me depressed about my future. I want to get speciality in UK bc at least doctors works in humanitarian conditions. And gets their salary well. But i am not good at english well. I have to get 7 points in ielts. I am sad so much :((
First discovered you because of medschool content, but stayed throughout the years because of the value you give to all your viewers. So proud of how you've grown and will continue to be here to see where life leads you! 🍀🍀
Im a doctor currently and having this exact conversation with myself. Thanks for making this video man. And honestly once a doctor always a doctor. You did the work to get that title. You may not be able to practice but you earned that title.
@@DamplyDoo Im sticking it out for now. I have about 2 more years before my medical school loans will be forgiven under the public service forgiveness loan. After that i will have more freedom
I am an artificial intelligence engineer (bachelor + masters = 7 years ) & now studying veterinary medicine (5.5 years)! For me, I will be happier helping animals than sitting in a cubicle programming for the rest of my life...I will also be using my AI skills in starting a business combining medicine and AI in many ways....I also have started my own youtube channel as well!..Life is crazy and I am determined to find my life's purpose! let's go ...
I don't want to work in a cubicle all day but I also enjoy programming so there is kinda a complex unless I somehow get a remote job or I get my own thing going.
woah. yep i get you. cs here to with ai ms. but i'm thinking of leaving. the biggest way you can help animals is by leaving them off your plate and out of your clothing. let's see if you problem solving brain and human in you can figure this out.
Thats amazing. I hope you succeed in whatever you do. I'm happy for you and that you found out your passion and went for it. Sometimes mind takes time to admit what your heart already knows. Lots of love ❤️
Once a fan, always a fan. Personally, the prefix doctor never meant anything special for me. You're a good person, pleasant and interesting to watch. Having faced the problems of multitasking last year, your advices has helped tremendously. Your lifestyle is inspiring. I looking forward to watch more content on different topics. From me "like" always in advance. 🍀
I needed this video! THANK YOU! I just quit a high profile job to go back to RUclips full time. I can relate so much with you! You have no idea. You are saving lives with many of your videos. Please keep the good work. Cannot wait for the book.
🍀 As a person that struggles with making important decisions, I found it very stimulating to watch you break down your thought process. There is a lot of stigma around quitting pretty much anything, so I think this is a very valuable topic for that as well. Thank you for sharing this.
As a practicing physician myself, your thoughts resonate a lot with me as I've have mixed feelings about the modern practice of medicine and the impact we actually have as individual doctors. While I don't know if I'd leave clinical medicine if given the opportunity, I applaud you for making the brave step of forging your own path in life rather than cling to and live for the expectations of others. I appreciate your honesty and agree that you're going to be a doctor, your heart should be in the right place and you recognized it early and quit now rather than slowly hating it out of quiet desperation. I've been reading a lot of Seth Godin recently and I think most people are just too afraid to take risks and feel jealous or threatened when others take the chances that they secretly wish they could take. I wish you well and look forward to seeing where your journey takes you.
*Ali, you saved my life by quitting... Idk, im literally crying while writing this* Yes you saved me, because now I can quit too, quit being something I don't like, quit doing it just because I have spent 8 years of my life to build this career, when I'm neither passionate nor making close to what I could potentially make with my set of skills. I loved it when you said you don't regret studying for it because you enjoyed the journey, and its the journey that matters than the destination itself, I can truly resonate with that. I can finally quit the decision I made as a kid, and finally move ahead with my life with what I truly want. You might not realize it, if this video hadn't came, I don't know what I would have done with my life, probably suicide. And remembered that, you might have lost a few audience due to this decision, I assure you, just because of this decision you got even more committed audience like me. Thank you Ali, you got my support until the end of time! Do what matters to you, so that we could be confident in doing things that matters to us! I'm eagerly waiting for your next video to come out. ❤️☘️
8 yrs. may seem real long when one is young, & it is as a proportion of life lived, but as one ages & gains greater perspective (longer time line), one realizes 8 yrs. really isn't that long! Remember average life expectancy is 80 something years & nowadays, folks are averaging 12 different jobs.
🍀Salams Ali, Thank you a ton for this video. I'm a 3rd yr medical student currently at a similar crossroads to you. Every point you brought up in this video has crossed my mind in the past 6months. I genuinely believe teaching is a more noble, impactful and rewarding career than Medicine. The community I live in is especially in need of good teachers. I haven't quite worked up the courage to leave Medicine and take that leap. I respect how your views on practising Medicine have changed over time and hope to have my own story to tell one day :)
🍀 It's always nice to see someone choosing to live life for themselves instead of other people. Really enjoyed listening to you explain your thought process around this tough choice.
I respect you even more for being willing to change your career! That shows me, at least, that you aren't just a hypocritical productivity guru. Productivity isn't just about tips and how to pass exams, everything in life can be improved, including decision making and career jumps etc. You being willing to do this despite the possible repercussions to your channel shows a level of maturity that's even more of a reason to stay subscribed for me. Keep making the great content! I'm here for it for as long as you're making stuff! ☘️
🍀 as a fellow doctor who has seriously contemplated leaving medicine before, I really appreciate the insight into the thought processes of obviously one of the more brilliant minds amongst us. thanks for sharing everything so genuinely! p.s. I'm an internal medicine registrar with big dreams of opening my own steakhouse and bar!
I feel like during quarantine, people started to make decisions based on what they truly want. Like this is the best time for us to realize more of ourselves.
I graduate med school and I am a midwife but while I was in med school I was volunteering and working with youth organizations. At some point the volunteering became activism and I realized that I am interested in more social aspects and human rights rather than medicine. And I was enjoying the things that I am doing for free besides medical school more rather than working in a hospital. So, now I am pursuing a degree in Political Science and I am quite happy with my decision. :) 🍀
Genuine question what does a degree in political science do? I'm the same! I have a huge passion for social justice and I'm planning my own charity organization in the future
@@mikafizz1022 I felt the need to know more about governments, governance, political regimes, party systems, political movements and so on. That's why enrolled political science degree. But the field it's quite broad, so you can pick up stuff from a broad spectrum. I find that absolutely amazing. There people interested in more theoretical aspects, philosophy, social justice, comparative politics or purely methodology and research based stuff. So, a political science degree gives you so many opportunities in that sense.
@TheEditor107 I think she meant that she is a registered midwife, Bachelor of Science in Midwifery is probably her undergraduate program. And she went to medical school and graduated. Idk how it works in your country, but in some countries, midwifery is a 4-year undergraduate program and can also be a pre-med.
@@mikafizz1022 Charities lmao are a failure of society. The huge increase in society is a failure, there should not be charities in the first place. Also a lot of these charities are paying workers huge amounts of money so we know the money is not going to good places. Literal former head of states work for charities getting paid 10s of thousands just for a speech for a so called charity.
I left teaching after 26 years. I wanted to leave for years and finally could financially but I waited too long. It was way too much work for the pay. I lost too many weekends with my family planning lessons and grading papers. I hope you inspire many young people to think about how they want to spend their time and to not let fear drive their decisions. 💛
hey L.j I am a new youtuber trying to create content using thoughts and ideas of the viewers, for my latest video i am collecting inputs from the viewers of Ali Abdaal my question is: WHAT IS A PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE ALI IF HE ASKED YOU TO BE HONEST It would mean a lot for me to see you share your answer, cheers!
@@ninjack5157 I don't think I have any advice for him. His channel and content has always been very well thought out and presented. I think it's probably the most valuable use of time for RUclips viewers. Good luck with your channel!
@Tanya I am slowly getting into tutoring. There are companies that run coordinate online tutoring and local tutoring that I have used for my kids. Their calculus/statistics tutor is in San Diego and we live north of Los Angeles. If you teach math or science you can make over $100 an hour. Of course where you live matters but if it's online you can reach families on the coasts(in the US) and they will pay for good tutors. My other suggestion is corporate training or going to work for educational book publishers doing presentations and teacher training. Good luck!
I graduated med school in 2018 and just was so burnt out I haven’t done a single thing for the past three years. I’ve become mentally, physically, and emotionally broken during this time. But I would never take it back. At the end of this dark tunnel of depression has come the realization that I actually do love medicine. I went to med school because it’s what my parents wanted for me all my life. These three years have shown me that I actually do want to be a doctor. Not for my parents. But for me. So I’m thankful for this 3 year break. It means that for the next 35-36 years I will be doing something that I actually want to do. I appreciate that you took the time to make this video Ali! It shows that people can always change whatever they’re doing in life. And it’s ok to change your path when you want/need to.
You sound so much like me! I also graduated med school in 2018, extremely burnt out. My mental health was the worst it's ever been, especially after I failed a board exam. I wasn't sure I could keep going and at one point had decided to give up. But after a break, I realized how much I loved and missed medicine and was so sad to think I'd never be able to practice in a clinical setting and decided to try again and I'll hopefully be starting residency next July. I wonder if Ali will feel the same at some point. I get why he doesn't feel like he needs it anymore though, doing something that causes thousands of people to message you about you how much you helped them sounds so much better than working as a doctor.
Aww! I can totally relate to your experiences as I am in the same position myself and I really miss practicing medicine after a 3-year Break. Rn I decided to apply for residency next year since this year's applications already ended. Thank you so much for your comments, it made me feel less alone.
I felt every word you said ! I've been in the same position for two years now , failed the residency entry test ( and 4000 other people , 3rd world country , residency spots are very limited) been through a depression and finally picking myself up , will retake the exam in two months . Wish me luck .
Your vulnerability in this video is beyond admirable. Thank you for the risk you have accepted with this level of transparency. While I’ve seen a few of your videos, this is in fact the video that has nudged me to subscribe ☘️🍀
The scream that i let out when I read the title 😂 OMG ALI WHAT A GAME CHANGER this is what I've been thinking about for nearly 3 months and I'm kind of in shock knowing that I have someone like you talking about this as well. Thank you for sharing this!!
Ali, sending you full support your way I can't imagine how tough this decision must have been. Having watched the whole video I can tell you thought this through extremely carefully. Wishing you all the success in all you do, will be following your journey!
I REALLY needed someone to talk about this. I'm a dentist and I find myself doubting all the time if it is really my "calling". Its refreshing hearing someone talk about the same things I have in my mind that I don't dare talking to anyone about.
I am in dental school . I also find myself doubting the decision of my career. I feel like I'm just holding onto bds because of the money and social status.. It'd really help if someone could talk about this and help me navigate through
@@aksh9686Same, but my mental and physical health during exams season is not good. I already have dental technician school finished. Maybe I should go back there. I don't know 🥲 Do you guys have any advice? It what I always wanted, but in my country there is not much difference in salary, so why would I be going though this much sacrifice for 4 more years. I'm devastated.
"The system saves lives rather than the individual." Wow. Enjoyed listening to your breakdown leading to you leaving medicine. Life's too short to not do what we truly enjoy and gives our life meaning and joy. You're a born teacher, Ali. 🙂
I am a new youtuber trying to create content using thoughts and ideas of the viewers, for my latest video i am collecting inputs from the viewers of Ali Abdaal my question is: WHAT IS A PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE ALI IF HE ASKED YOU TO BE HONEST It mean a lot for me to see you answer, so please share your thoughts, cheers!
Unexpectedly found your video. Despite suggestions from others to continue to pursue content creation for financial gains over medicine, my passion for the latter goes beyond money. Thanks for sharing your insights.
This is such an honest and logical video, discussing the statement "being a content creator is not as important as being a doctor" is such deep and sensitive topic especially in this situation. This completely makes sense. As a person, going through career change I just want to say a huge thank you. 🍀
I've been so passionate about teaching and this video was so inspiring to watch (eventhough I'm not in medicine!). Ali reminded me of the type of impact I wish to have on the world. The honesty in his eyes is so precious. Ali, if you're reading this, sending you a big hug for making this difficult, but supremely empowering decision 🍀❤
Speaking as a medical student myself, I still find the business aspect of things fascinating! For me the switch just shows that even if I go through uni and fall out of love with medicine, I'm not restricted to the one career path. All the best on the transition mate!
I actually started loving this channel more because of this video because you are being authentically yourself. You don’t have to be a doctor to continue doing what you actually love and what makes you happy. This video as a pre med student is actually inspirational because so many people put themselves all into being a doctor and don’t even know who they are if they aren’t the person pursuing a medical profession or a future doctor or a current doctor. I think it’s admirable that you were a doctor and realized you didn’t have to stay in a profession that didn’t satisfy you.
I just reapplied to med school for the 3rd time and finally realized maybe it's not for me. Always scary to walk away from something I dreamt of doing all my life (I'm 26) but I know I can find more fulfillment and make a bigger impact being a PA and continuing my business as a permanent makeup artist. I resonated with a lot of your thought process in this video and wanted to thank you. It takes maturity and courage to walk away! Proud of you and rooting for you!!! 😊
I'm a recently graduated MD and I've failed to match into residency last year because I failed one of my board exams the first time I took it. I never failed anything else and have since passed but residencies are so competitive that programs don't even bother to interview me with their thousands of applicants. I often wish I did PA instead. I think PA is such a great job, most of the positives about being a doctor without most of the negatives.
@@thelifecoachmedicalmodel6648 100% agree, so many thing need to change about medical school and residency training. We need to be treated like human beings, not robots that you can just program to work non-stop without needing rest or making any mistakes and who are super happy to do it all. And that's barely even the tip of the iceberg, so many things need to improve. I'm hopeful but it will take a very long time
Congrats! Also, this is no surprise and totally saw this coming. In fact, I was curious why you didn’t announce it sooner when the channel…courses….book etc really stated to get traction and pay off mentally and 💰💰
Hello. I am a doctor who left the clinical practice a few years into it, just like you did, and this resonates with me. I agree that most people do not get the "why" behind it all. I now work as a healthcare data specialist and a part-time pregnancy coach and it brings me more joy and fulfillment than the clinical service ever did. There are things only some are good at, and once you have found yours, why wait around? Wishing you the best!
Hello Labiba. I'm a medical student as well but interested in other fields involving data, researches, technology etc in medicine. Not necessarily prescribing drugs, and treating. It doesn't interest me as much as it used to I was kinda hoping you'd see this and please tell me about healthcare data specialist
@@gwendolyneayiera5046 Healthcare data is a new and upcoming area that deals with a bunch of things including managing electronic medical records, medical terminology, etc... You can look into Clinical Informatics and Ontology to get an idea about this field. There are many parallel fields to medicine, but most of them do require clinical expertise, i.e a few years of clinical practice following graduation. Hope this helps!
Ali. This is mind blowing. I've never been more scared in my entire life about a decision like this. Thank you for working me through your thought process.
🍀 Your thought process is actually incredibly mature and well-planned. I don’t even watch you to see what you’re doing (medicine, productivity, etc), because that’s kinda superficial. I like watching because of the value you end up bringing to us no matter the area you’re acting in. I feel like that’s true success, when people don’t follow you for what you do, but for who you are.
Realistically, if 99% of med students and Physicians in the United States had a comfortable lifestyle and multiple sources of revenue to which they wouldn't need to be depend on a doctor salary, they would leave in a heart beat. Props to you Ali for being so open and honest about it. Those outside of medicine don't really comprehend the debt burden we get ourselves into, the constant stress, lack of time off, away from family, admin & insurance companies making Millions while you work your ass off for less than 1% of what they make. Looking forward to what the future holds for you.
@@tomaszzieba315 I am saying if doctors in the US had other sources of income to which they didn’t need to rely on a doctor salary they would leave medicine. Lots of doctors go into real estate, car business, stocks, etc. Ali has videos about other revenues of income
In the US, the dismantling of tye for-profit private healthcare system would be beneficial for our communities and it may address some health disparities. It won't necessarily improve life-work balance for physicians because different specialities have less flexibility than others. The biggest relief will be removing arguing prior authorizations with insurance companies & wasting time battling insurance companies for patient care. Furthermore, in the US, unlike the UK, this current system allows physicians to be paid far higher than a non- profit government based system like the NHS. Some physician only want to do medicine and love that. Not everyone wants to be business owners or responsible for multiple projects to get revenue. That's ok. Other doctors do multiple side projects and own businesses. This is also ok. This is all personal choice.
Found you preparing to get into med school. Now I’m in. Your old content was incredibly helpful, but what I value most is the way you articulate your thoughts. Providing frameworks for thinking has had a bigger impact on me than any particular bit of advice. Looking forward to what’s ahead. 🍀
I can't put into words how incredibly helpful this video was for me. I was at a crossroads in my life, and I wasn't able to put my thoughts into proper words, but you did just that very eloquently. Thank-you so so so much for this video!
I’m an aspiring doctor, I really respect your decision, nobody sees those constant hours of grind to get to becoming a doctor but I do agree that because of your audience, your time is now more valuable helping others via your platforms.
The thing is, you've inadvertently created two careers over the years (doctor and digital media specialist), and while at the fork in your road you've chosen the path that feels more fulfilling to you. 👏 👏
Man! this video is so inspiring! I'm a doctor in the UK & a youtuber as well and I can relate to all what you said! The way you explained your idea of a person's impact & the actual saving of lives was amazing. All respect Ali and all the best with your brave decision 👏 I'm a medic & I'll continue to follow you :) Definitely not unsubscribing!
I am a dentist and have been working as one for 5 years now. I have also been working as a part time remote Dev for a couple years now. I can very much relate to this as I have been struggling to make a decision to leave Dentistry for good in favour of becoming a full time dev/software engineer. I do have some added fears and constraints, though, due to living in Syria where it is hard to earn enough money to keep you alive. This video did help me consider some other aspects of the dilemma (especially social status and helping people). Thank you for this.
I've always loved how genuine you are. You've always been an inspiration amongst a lot of other RUclipsrs who have changed my life and I fully agree with your thought process and can see where you're coming from. I generally am quite scared of being in the public eye and don't comment on videos but out of all the videos I decided to comment on, it's this one. Thank you for always being an inspiration and keeping things real!
Wow- this video leaves a lot to think about, internally. What we’re taught about our “work,” from the time we’re young, is actually created through a very narrow lens. I fully support your decision and I’ll continue to watch. 🍀
🍀 This made me open my mind to a brand new perspective. It’s like a new door opened for me. The family pressure wanting me to study medicine for the social status has been a burden. Not that I’m not interested in medicine, I’m more into being a research person. Thanks for sharing your views. All the best!
🍀 that's a power move. Always admire your thought process on almost everything I've seen on your channel. Good luck and may the force always be with you Ali.
This might actually be my favorite video of yours! There's so much shame surrounding doctors who decide to leave medicine. I honestly think pursuing something else that's better for you should be normalized. If people in other careers are encouraged to do that, then why can't we? Life's too short to force yourself to do something for the wrong reasons.
April, I agree! there is a burden of responsibility with medicine that can be heavy to carry. We have other aspects of ourselves outside of medicine, for example, I'm really creative, I love art, business, finance. I can choose to pursue other interests
🍀I'm a doctor from India kinda in the middle of choosing my specialization for post graduation and there was a lot of pressure to choose something that ticks all of the boxes you mentioned and I've been feeling that Internal medicine is the one . Watching your video the entire 43.17 mins of it was totally worth it because its a consolation to know that it won't be the end of the world if i dont absolutely love my job and would like to do something else one day. it's okay to quit being a doctor if it's not aligning with your values someday and there are other ways to save lives and contribute to the community. Thank you for this . I admire how've you approached this ,your thought process your candour and honesty .I wish you the very best .
Here from India too from them central colleges. Seriously contemplating my life choices, keeps me up sometimes. There's always levels to it I know, many rungs below to appreciate the position offers but mentally, it really takes a toll. Let's be a good senior to all the Juniors and staffs
This video has quite literally touched my heart. As a doctor stepping away forever from medicine for various reasons, it's been a journey of self-blame for wanting a better life here in the US. I wish I could repeatedly like every single reason and justification provided in this video. I am very lucky and fortunate to have found your channel on the way to entering into the entrepreneurial side of medicine or maybe another industry that indirectly impacts patient care. Thank you for being you. From one physician to another, you are brave.

It’s a journey and we’re allowed to make curves in the trails. Thank you 🙏🏾 and I absolutely love your videos and will continue to watch! How can I take your course! Lol 🍀
Genuinely this was for me your best video! So much honesty, some vulnerability and a lot of thought-provoking examples! I believe so many people feel/think the same... they just either don’t admit it or don’t talk about it. Well done you Ali 🍀🙌
🍀This is awesome. I'm and doctor / engineer in the US and have similarly grappled with the concept of helping people in medicine vs. engineering and in other walks of life. It was really great hearing your thought process and I have no doubt that you'll continue to have a tremendous impact as a teacher and creator.
Loving the new videos you are putting out lately - honest, real, and give fresh perspectives which is rare to come across. So thank you and keep doing what you are doing 🍀
🍀 thanks Ali. I appreciate the courage it took for you to be open about your process. I wish you all the very best. It’s sad how people can be so narrow minded.
CONGRATS!! I think we could all see this coming, but you had to come to the final decision in your own time, on your own terms. It's also an EXCELLENT thought process you went through, so thanks for sharing that with us. It's probably a video I'll need to keep coming back to while I consider all my options with the crossroads I'm at in my life too. So THANK YOU! And also - can't wait to see all the exciting new things opening up in your life next! 🍀
I have two weeks of med school left and I’m still undecided about whether or not to keep pursuing it when I’m done. I know if I keep going it’ll probably be out of fear. The thought of starting over and figuring out what to do instead terrifies me but your openness about your experience makes the fear a bit more manageable. So, thank you for sharing your journey with us. Wish you all the best!
yep. you may want to finish the degree, then try it on for size then evaluate whether it is for you or not. data! get the data! but if you already have sufficient data explaining the pros, cons and what you truly want to do then perhaps you can leave ... after you finish the 2 weeks if you think you can survive it :D
Better to decide whether to continue a career in healthcare or not after internship (compulsory 1 year rotation in all departments) or after doing 5-6 months job in the field of your interest.
hey brother!I am a new youtuber trying to create content using thoughts and ideas of the viewers, for my latest video i am collecting inputs from the viewers of Ali Abdaal my question is: WHAT IS A PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE ALI IF HE ASKED YOU TO BE HONEST It would mean a lot for me to see you share your answer, cheers!
I'm a medical student and omg i feel this!!! When i think about the future, like 10 years from now i see myself playing with my children and gathering with the family and friends, maybe working online on a project or doing some investments but NOT BEING A DOCTOR!!! i can't fit an 80hrs/week schedule into my "dream life" with kids and family.... I'm so tired and i need help with this please!
@@wallywild5088 i don't mind at all it's ok😊 I'm in Alexandria, Egypt But I'm interested to practice medicine outside my country, however, my concerns about practicing medicine in the future are all the same wherever I am
There are many specialties out there where you are more free to choose you schedule. Like, sports medicine and psychiatry. You gotta be smart about money, though, if you don't wanna have a crazy work schedule.
An aspiring doctor over here, always have loved your content due of its quality and the value it provided ( and still provides ),you working as a doctor was just a +. Still a huge fan of you and your content nonetheless, excited to see your journey ( and your content ) from here on out, best of luck man!!
Been working on a PhD for 3 years and have been seriously considering leaving. The thought process you've had clinging to being a doctor feels very similar to me. This has been very helpful in helping me think through if I'll stay or not 🍀
I'm in the exact same position - but the in the UK we finish in 3-4 years so I'm trying to stick it out since I only have a few months left, but I really feel like it has been a waste of time. I'm just so grateful that from day 1 I knew I didn't want to stay in research so I always worked on gaining additional, more relevant skills for a different field. Hope you follow your heart but also know that seeing it through isn't too bad if you find other ways to sustain :)
@@FIFII were in exactly the same position, I'm in the UK too. If I continue I'll hopefully finish somewhere around September. And yeah I've been doing other projects and things so that I have somewhere to jump off to if I need to. I hope you get through it and go do what you actually want to do!
@@magicbean4616 glad to hear it!! The final push is tough but we're so close yet so far! Submitting in Sept too - but trying to do so earlier so fingers crossed!
This was a really interesting video. I left medicine too and only recently started making videos on RUclips. However, now I'm considering what it'd be like to be a doctor again. Though I've blogged about my experience of leaving medicine and my reasons why, circumstances change. Announcing things to the internet does make it a little hard, but we're human at the end of the day. Change is the only constant. As we learn more, we move differently.
This level of reflection is what is genuinely needed to make the world a better place collectively. Imagine if everyone was thinking like this… at this depth! Beautifully inspiring!
Ali, this video has warmed my heart so much. The amount of care, effort, & time you have put into this decision and then sharing this with others, is truly special. I can imagine how difficult this decision must have been. From an outsider's perspective, seeing someone who is ambitious and motivated enough about life to choose joy, is a wonderful thing and it brings me such hope. Thank you so much for sharing and enjoy the next stage of your adventure, it looks like an awesome one. x
Medicine was the path that lead you to where you are today…all the while you were helping people along the way….now it is time to let it go in gratitude for its wisdoms, teachings and guidance. Congratulations on this next chapter!
Imagine the world with all the humans (doctors included 🙂) being so honest with themselves. Pure gem. Deeply resonating with your energy, adore your beautiful heart and feeling support for your big desition! Great contribution, thank you ❤️
The honesty of the thoughts you shared is so refreshing. Your thought process is basically what I'd go through if I was in your position to quit my job for my YT career (though it's a bit early for that). Really great stuff Ali - I've been 'part-time' following you since your med-school teaching days (when I was still in uni!). Wish you all the best. 🍀🍀
Not being a practising doctor never stops you from being a doctor. I'm intern M. D., appreciate your honesty and advice. Saving 7 life perhaps is possible in 1 day! How? Well by giving advice to 7 patients and educating them they may educate their friends and family. All the best ❤
You’re just so thoughtful. Hearing your process was helpful and inspiring. This is exciting 🙏🏻 because it’s brave and sincere-another reason i love this channel. I support and applaud your decision. 🍀
Having been a doctor myself for more than 6 years, I understand you perfectly. The reason I watch your videos isn't just because of your medical background, but because you’ve not allowed medicine become your life. That's inspiring. I battled same decision not so long ago. I realised as well that I don't have to work in the hospital 24/7 to save lives so I'm doing something about it. At the end Impact is really all that matters. Can't wait to see where this decision takes you and how much more you will achieve. I'm all in for the ride Ali.🍀
I left med school nearly 2 years ago and resonated with a lot of the points you made in this video. Watching your videos as I was deciding to leave really helped me and it has been interesting to follow your updates since then. Medicine seemed to be a very set life where I had a general idea of what I was doing (and it was a satisfying response to give to my peers and parents when they asked). Since I left, I spent one year professionally coding in Crystal Lang, music directed a local musical, worked on songs, put out a play, and my job is now a sound artist making accessible audio CATCHAs. The uncertainty was scary at first, but I would not have guessed at where I am now. Excited to see your updates in the future!
I’ve been at similar crossroads. Even family deter you from what you really want to do, because they’re scared you’ll fail. However, live your truth. I believe we know what we should do deep down and it’s distressing to deny it. You’ll be fine, more than fine. You’re why I watch your videos. You are unique, in a very good way :)
This feels so inspiring because I’ve been going back and forth about quitting my job and going after my passion. I know this was meant for Ali but it resonated with me deeply. Thank you
This video hit me in all the right ways. An honest and open look at your life and values and I love the overall aesthetic. Great editing, a really peaceful room with nice lighting, relaxing music... I could watch this video all day lol
I have always suspected you would eventually make this decision but I’m so happy that you feel fulfilled with your decision irrespective of what some might think, it’s not an easy decision to battle with in your mind, but you chose you at the end. Happy for you Ali🍀
Let me start off by saying you’re extremely brave! You will always remain a doctor by training even if you don’t wish to practise it anymore. Teaching is soo fulfilling for the soul. All the best for your future endeavours ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
Usually I do not like listening to people that talk fast and talk to much but you are talking fast with complete positive ideas..you are speaking to a part of me that I am mostly like in deep thought
You've taught me a lot of skills for med school and I really appreciate hearing your thorough thought process that led you to the decision you made. The value of the skills you share make a huge impact. Even in this video, I feel like I learned about how to make more intentional decisions 🍀🍀🍀🍀Good luck and I'm excited to hear about more about your journey and the content you will create :)🍀🍀🍀🍀
Couldn't care less that you're no longer an active Doctor. The value that you continually provide, video after video, for free, is the reason you are my absolute favorite RUclips channel to watch. You were one of the biggest influences and inspirations that made me feel like I could actually do it, and to full send on starting my own RUclips channel. Thank you for knowledge, your openness, and your inspiration. Count me as one more 🍀 who's life you've had an immensely positive impact on.

I would read that so fast! I've watched you for a couple years now, and you have been integral in my career as a fitness coach, and now as a software engineer.
You and I are similar in the sense that we love to teach and help others live more fulfilling lives. Now I'm pursuing that freedom so I can do that too!
@Depressing_Dumb I’m still a nurse and talk about nursing things.

I love the part at the end where you weren't afraid to own up to your decision and addressed the person who said the only reason they were watching you was because of you being a doctor/RUclipsr. Watching your videos are really making me consider it once again. I bought the book you recommended SHOW YOUR WORK and I can't wait to read it!

Came here specifically to look for Lewis's comment and I'm not disappointed :D
Does your medical school offer the opportunity to graduate early?
@@untidyecho9916 no you can only graduate after 6 years
Same problem :( i am third grade at med school.

🍀 As a person that struggles with making important decisions, I found it very stimulating to watch you break down your thought process. There is a lot of stigma around quitting pretty much anything, so I think this is a very valuable topic for that as well. Thank you for sharing this.
The stigma around quitting is based on a lack & scarcity mentality that no longer fits the 21st century life in 1st world nations!
Idk, im literally crying while writing this*
Yes you saved me, because now I can quit too, quit being something I don't like, quit doing it just because I have spent 8 years of my life to build this career, when I'm neither passionate nor making close to what I could potentially make with my set of skills.

8 yrs. may seem real long when one is young, & it is as a proportion of life lived, but as one ages & gains greater perspective (longer time line), one realizes 8 yrs. really isn't that long! Remember average life expectancy is 80 something years & nowadays, folks are averaging 12 different jobs.

Thank you a ton for this video.

Same with me 🤝
I found this video so therapeutic to watch bc I love the way he breaks down making the decision so logically. I always struggle with decisions
The scream that i let out when I read the title 😂 OMG ALI WHAT A GAME CHANGER this is what I've been thinking about for nearly 3 months and I'm kind of in shock knowing that I have someone like you talking about this as well. Thank you for sharing this!!
You actually screamed?
Ali, sending you full support your way I can't imagine how tough this decision must have been. Having watched the whole video I can tell you thought this through extremely carefully. Wishing you all the success in all you do, will be following your journey!
Career shift is the most difficult thing to Do I wonder how it became easy for you
Ahh another one of my favourite doctor RUclipsrs.. 🌺 Hope you are doing well.
I REALLY needed someone to talk about this. I'm a dentist and I find myself doubting all the time if it is really my "calling". Its refreshing hearing someone talk about the same things I have in my mind that I don't dare talking to anyone about.
I am too a dentistry student and thinking about to moving in a different direction.

@@ninjack5157 If you believe its right then it's right.
I think this was one of the most helpful distinctions he made..really helped to frame some of my thought processes
Good for you
I'm a recently graduated MD and I've failed to match into residency last year because I failed one of my board exams the first time I took it. I never failed anything else and have since passed but residencies are so competitive that programs don't even bother to interview me with their thousands of applicants. I often wish I did PA instead. I think PA is such a great job, most of the positives about being a doctor without most of the negatives.
@@monkiram my thought is the time is ripe to change the system- I hope you find where you want to be 🤲🏻
@@thelifecoachmedicalmodel6648 100% agree, so many thing need to change about medical school and residency training. We need to be treated like human beings, not robots that you can just program to work non-stop without needing rest or making any mistakes and who are super happy to do it all. And that's barely even the tip of the iceberg, so many things need to improve. I'm hopeful but it will take a very long time

U dont really leave medicicine u still work around it ans ur part is important 🙂
Hello Labiba.
I'm a medical student as well but interested in other fields involving data, researches, technology etc in medicine. Not necessarily prescribing drugs, and treating. It doesn't interest me as much as it used to
I was kinda hoping you'd see this and please tell me about healthcare data specialist

Exactly! Ali is impacting more lives here. It's awesome.
Seriously? Can you write more about these sources of revenue?
As a MD myself, I agree with you Zebari ;)
Botan
In the US, physician DON'T rely on their physician income alone, MANY invest in real estate, private ventures, etc.
Found you preparing to get into med school. Now I’m in. Your old content was incredibly helpful, but what I value most is the way you articulate your thoughts. Providing frameworks for thinking has had a bigger impact on me than any particular bit of advice. Looking forward to what’s ahead. 🍀

Yeah, always focus on your passion and let that take you to where you want to go

So, thank you for sharing your journey with us. Wish you all the best!
Ahh thanks :) definitely stick with it for the next 2 weeks 😂 good luck deciding beyond that point!
yep. you may want to finish the degree, then try it on for size then evaluate whether it is for you or not. data! get the data! but if you already have sufficient data explaining the pros, cons and what you truly want to do then perhaps you can leave ... after you finish the 2 weeks if you think you can survive it :D
Better to decide whether to continue a career in healthcare or not after internship (compulsory 1 year rotation in all departments) or after doing 5-6 months job in the field of your interest.
