Doctors also have super high insurance rates. Your regular average doctor in a practice makes decent money but they aren't rolling. They also have the loans to pay back.

On a serious note, I am pleasantly surprised to see these doctors be so open about their pay. Actually makes us general public trust you guys more. Yet you only shared a national sum and not your personal salary. So does that mean you are a huge proponent for national or individual salaray transparency?
Did you share you how much you make and it got cut? Hard to imagine, you didn’t share anything lmao, you share a stat we can all look up which is a pretty useless piece of info, pay varies heavily on location along let alone all the other factors, base pay for almost every single job with a degree where I live is about 50% higher than the national average.
My dad and his brother were in a private practice as surgeons together. The sacrifices they made were real. Middle of the night phone calls, going from 0-100 to get the hospital for emergency surgeries, and very long days. However, I was always proud of my dad-not because of his salary-in fact, he accepted barters occasionally-but because he was helping people. So, do the things you are good at and love, but do it to help people.
This! People not in the medical field don't see how much doctors do behind the scenes. My mom was admitted to the hospital after cancer treatment was completed and the doctors discovered it had spread. Her oncologist was on vacation overseas and responding to calls about her treatment. Specialists are ALWAYS on call.
I mean, for his patients as well, and possibly why he got into Medicine too, in that he can spend time helping people. A lot of doctors get burnt out trying to help people, but having to pay the bills.

@@kkb892 I think it wouldn't be a good idea to go around bragging about it for sure or just flaunting your wealth because it's rude and yeah someone could get an idea to rob you. Add malpractice insurance, stress, staff to navigate patient insurance, student debt. They make a lot, and some of the doctors have to pay a lot to be in business.

Why do pediatricians make so little?!?! Everything that has to do with children is always lower paid. It's so sad that our system doesn't value people who care for children. 😢
Even with what I do, the pay isn’t that great. I’m not in the medical field myself. I do respite and habilitation care for kids with special needs. Some of us do similar work to that if a CNA but in a home setting. Our pay doesn’t always reflect our skills. We do what we do because we love our work and the kids we work with.
Because pediatricians are a dime a dozen. They’d be paid more had they chosen a different specialty that wasn’t so popular. Like try finding a neurologist who specializes in multiple sclerosis. They are hard to find, so they get paid more. And most times patients have to travel long distances just to get care for whatever disease they have. But pediactrics is a popular field to practice in. Also I believe the system does value pediatricians and kids. Thankfully pediatricians are everywhere, if kids need treatment. Those who chose to be a pediatrician knew the pay disparity. As they said, they do it to help kids, not for the pay. If anything, the healthcare system does not value adults who are sick with incurable diseases who live in chronic pain.

Dr.K explaining that making as much money as he did allowed him to see so many patients for free is such an eye opener for people I think and a reminder for myself. I remember my doctor when I was a kid, rest his soul, never charged my family a penny for all of my brothers issues. We had had the same family care doctor for like 20 years before he passed and when my brother got extremely sick, he never asked us to pay a single bill. Many doctors that make loads of money where I live (typically in private) will work less in the week in their actual jobs and volunteer at public hospitals for a day or two.

I think people forget that they also have to have huge insurance covers, probably hundreds of thousands in student loan debt, and be prepared for lawsuits if a patient complains about not getting what they want for treatment. It's the same with lawyers too. You are working with people's lives with very sensitive situations and people can utterly screw you over if they don't like you. I work in mental health and with teens and thankfully I have good rapport with my clients and everything, but we meet behind closed doors and if they DIDN'T like me, they could easily make up something to get me fired or in trouble, if they didn't like the outcome of our counseling session. Evil people are out there and it just takes one person on a bad day to destroy your entire livelihood. Helping professions can often pay well but the higher the pay day the higher the risk of getting screwed over. That's why I like my comfortable salary that was enough to pay off my student loans over a decade and start saving for a house and living in a decent apartment in a safe neighborhood for the time being.

When looking at those salaries, we also have to figure in huge taxes, paying back insane school loans, ridiculously high malpractice insurance, etc. When someone has invested that must of their lives into their education and having that level of responsibility on them every day, they have more than earned every penny. If there was not financial stability and ability to pay the cost for that long education, while having the stress and responsibility for people's lives in your hands, no one would bother going into medicine so it better be somewhat lucrative.
in other countries (yes even in europe) they get payed way less and still have to pay for the same things and taxes are a way bigger portion. sure they don't have to pay so much for university, but that's where it ends. and they have the same responsibilities if not more because they have to have similar results with less resources most of the time. There's no way in to justify this people getting payed so much money. I'm sorry but it's the truth. This is only the case because the healthcare system in America is a luxury that rich people want to keep that way.

So great to see some specialist and a couple PCP salary / per hour income. Docs are notorious for not telling pre-meds, med students or residents how much they actually make. Also, it's glaring the discrepancy between specialist and PCPs.
Agreed, although I think it is worth noting that specialists also have to do more training in the way of fellowships, which is something to note. But it is also worth noting that where you live makes a huge difference. Rural EM for instance is much more lucrative than an urban EM physician.
True, specialist do an extra 2-5 extra years, but that is not the difference. The increased reimbursement are due to procedures and being able to code higher levels.
Please be aware those numbers are absolutely dependent on where you work and live. "The US" is like saying "In Europe". It's huge. Those numbers feel like hub numbers.
These numbers vary vastly by region, hospital system, and how long you've practiced. A specialty endocrinologist I worked with who did pediatric to adult transfer of care for complex adrenal disease made less than a new grad Nurse Practitioner at the hospital we both worked. She went elsewhere (within the same state, just a different hospital system) and got a 135k salary increase for maintaining and doing the same job. Don't go into medicine for money. The strife, hardwork, and sacrifices made in school and than later in life while in practice cannot be fueled by money (or potential to make it). If you're passionate about the field and a specific path, don't let not making 300+ put you off exploring it.
Thanks Dr. Mike! love the transparency. You guys definitely deserve every penny you earn. The hard work, years of study, and daily challenges you all face every day are essential, and you deserve all you are compensated for.
It’s really cool seeing a doctor willing to treat patients for free. Was in therapy for a few years for free and it was incredible getting the help I needed while not having to worry about massive amounts of medical debt.
All those numbers are to show that doctors live comfortably. Lately, I realized that American definition of middle class is the ability of a person and family to feel content, to feel enough, to feel secure. If there are short comings, they can easily remedies without much effort or cost.
They are definitely not middle class doctors. In American you are starting to see the erosion of what it means to be the middle class. With the rampant inflation in the US everyone’s purchasing power is drastically reducing. For example grocery shopping in some regions increased by 20 or so percent. So if you don’t get a 20 percent promotion or earn 20 percent more income you are losing money every year. Something similar could be said with other categories like housing, rent, gas, cost of goods, etc. So to what you said, that definition is what it used to mean, but as prices continue to go up, this is become less and less true unless they start shifting the income ranges for the middle class
It also depends upon how much they have to pay back in student loans. A doctor can easily go $500-750k in debt for their education. Doctors here in Europe pay nothing or very little for tuition. They still earn high salaries, but they don't have the debt. And the middle class in the US has been eroding at a very fast rate. Due to inflation and increasing cost of housing, people need to earn more and more to remain middle class. Look up "the amount of money need to live comfortably". It's lists how much you need in each state to live comfortably. The amount is WAY over the average salary.
@@jcolonna12 20 % increase for groceries only? The question is more, how many people can still sort out priorities to where they don't need to go hungry or worry about health. And those become less and less as inflation continues.
@@jcolonna12 Bro... you need to go back to middle school. If you got a 20% raise you would have 108$.
Consider this: despite all these rates for doctors, majority of what the patient pays goes to marketing division, senior management and CEO bonuses, shareholders dividends, lawyers and many middlemen, insurance and kickbacks programs. In the end, not much actually goes to the doctors, nurses and medical drugs and equipment.

I don't care how much any of these people make after all the work they put in. They're helping people and doing an overall good for society and the people they work for. Much respect and thank you to all.
This sounds like alot of money. AND IT IS. But this is all before taxes. So keep in mind, most of these doctors are probably making 60% that. So $250K seemed to be average in this video. So they are probably taking home around $100-$150K.
It's all relative though. Like say you earn $80k a year. That is also before tax and you probably also have student loans. So you might only take home $55k at the end of the day. Doctors are still earning way more than most people.
@@dragonrings14 I'm not denying they don't take home more than most. But people hear $100k-$500k and they think they are rolling around in money. When in reality. Doctors don't start making money until 5+ years in the field after residency.
@@dragonrings14 You're right, it is relative. Not sure about America, but where I live student debt for doctors is significantly more than other careers. Average degree here is three years, but six for doctors. Our first (soon to be last) year is fully subsidised, so that's two years of uni vs five. However, many people don't get into med school the first time so they have to finish your degree (you do one year of a specific degree then apply to med school) so that they can apply through postgraduate entry which takes another two years (three to four if you decide to do an entirely different degree just in case you don't get in a second time). On top of that, the fee per year is higher for med school. Much of three of those years is spent in hospitals which you don't get paid for yet no one has energy to work, but they still have to cover living costs while they're there. Usually that will mean more student loans. Our student loans are way less than America and we don't have interest, but as Mama Jones painfully highlighted, doctor salaries are less than half of the salaries in the States (I'd take the US' higher student loans any day). So you're right. It is relative. Fot the work that doctors do and high skills they need to have, it's worth every cent.
Meanwhile.....in the UK, some medical professionals are doing Uber in their spare time, and some nurses having to use foodbanks because the cost of living is so bad here right now 😅🙈
I'm not sure you've experienced just how pervasive poverty can be here in the USA. Food bank use is at record levels, and a nurse who's a single mother in Missouri is definitely not getting the same treatment that she would in the UK (especially if she's a person of color, like myself). Enjoy the NHS, I'll keep staring at my medication costs for the month in disbelief.
Wife is anesthesia. Super location dependent. Place like Denver is 250k but somewhere more rural can be 5-600k for General. Pain mgmt can be anywhere from 400k- over a million if you are doing tons of procedures. Locums right now is 3-400/hr because they need them bad
Being a Doctor is the only job where I feel the high pay is justified. Getting very high pay is justified for what they do. I have always been mad at the pay rates for CEO's and other jobs that are 100's of times higher than the average person. Being paid a wage where you can focus on your job and not have to worry about buying groceries, or affording a car is great. I hope it continues to match inflation. I don't want my health care provider to be thinking about money when they are treating me. I would prefer they lived stress free and easy life so they can help me better.
How about engineers making tools and equipment which doctors are using, like ultrasound, xray, ct/mri/pet scanners, surgery robots, surgical instruments, patient monitoring equipment, computers, laboratory equipment and etc. Or bio-chemists making drugs and assays used for blood work? Saying that only doctors deserve high salaries is similar to saying that only CEOs deserve high salaries, as both build their success on the collective efforts of others. No one should have to worry about money while performing their work, especially in fields where focus and precision are critical to outcomes.
As an internist/ hospitalist, I thought Im poor by making just $1400-1800/day depending on number of pts I see coz I dont see much like my colleagues who makes $2500-3000/day and I only work 4days a week, until I heard that UK ER physician who said $400-500/day, darn nurses here in the US makes more than that.
1:38 No pediatrician does it for the money but also mentions a yearly salary option($120k to $180k is a LOT of money depending on where you live) that most people would dream to have. $125 per hour at minimum is more than about 80% of the population of the United States.
Keep in mind that its also expensive to be in the medical field to begin with. Taxes, student loans, malpractice insurance, etc. If someone is in the medical field solely for the money, then that person must not be so bright. There are better options with way less studying
Very important context , most doctors will enter the workforce and start earning somewhwere between their late 20s(more common in the UK and through some specialized programs in the us) to their mid 30s (some specializations taking longer than others). In the US it is also not uncommon for them to enter the workforce with high levels of student debt ( apart from undergrad loans they also have grad loans which unlime undergrad loans , start accumulating interest as soon as they are withdrawn rather than afrer graduation). These are still very salaries and careers in medicine can be very rewarding , but I think this is still very important context to consider.

The fact that New Zealand pays trained professionals of many fields (especially in healthcare) so low in comparison to Aussie and the US is the reason why we have a "brain drain" problem here. people will get their qualifications then move to other countries, usually Aussie, to earn better money in places that have a better cost of living. Our government has tried to stop this by introducing one year free of uni and interest-free student loans as long as you stay in the country but it hasn't done much. I'm going to graduate uni this year and my partner became qualified in his trade a few months ago, looking at the money we'd collectively make over the ditch in comparison to NZ is insane! Boundary, shipping and scaling problems limit the effectiveness of any person in most smaller economies. Estonia and other outskirt European economies, for example, while developed, simply have no choice but to whittle into Poland or Germany. The mid-developed Caribbean is on a steady road to nonexistence. I'm not saying NZ is acting optimally, but there is a point at which even optimal action cannot solve this problem.

The massive population of the US and its private healthcare will forever drag doctors away from Public health systems. In Canada, 1/3 doctors, dentists, and pharmacists hop the border to (not even exaggerating) 3x or 4x their yearly salary. Same applies to UK and AUS.
250k is not for private practice in rural or small towns.... I'm in West Texas & faculty at Texas tech get 165k. My husband works at an fqhc & he makes 225k + bonuses for number of patients seen. So it must be very different based on are!

The information given by the podiatry lady is misleading. There is no way a podiatrist makes more money than a Family Medicine doctor(salary-based). Podiatrists are not Doctors of Medicine like pediatrics, oncology, internist, GI, anesthesiology, etc, they are Doctors of Podiatry, which is a lower level than doctors of Medicine, similar to optometrist, chiropractic etc.
I'm sure most of the people "paying" $400 an hour are being covered by insurance, or at least a good chunk of it is being covered. For the past year I haven't had to pay anything for my mental health check-ups because my insurance now completely covers my bills.

I think it's to make it cheaper for kids
This is the dumbest take.
They’re on the bottom of the totem pole in the med field.

maybe these doctors...but also the truth is not every doctor cares about their patients a lot. they just do their per minimum, give some pills, if even that and send you off
So what about people who earn $15 per hour? Are you saying they dont deserve more?
@@satsumamoonnobody deserves nothing. If the person is receiving 15$/hr, that's cause the market decided that. You won't receive more just because you think you deserve it. Dr. Mike said more what is typical for doctors in his field and he left out income from his media career entirely.

And yet Dr. K said he's earning enough to offer free therapy! The man's incredible.
in other countries (yes even in europe) they get payed way less and still have to pay for the same things and taxes are a way bigger portion. sure they don't have to pay so much for university, but that's where it ends. and they have the same responsibilities if not more because they have to have similar results with less resources most of the time. There's no way in to justify this people getting payed so much money. I'm sorry but it's the truth. This is only the case because the healthcare system in America is a luxury that rich people want to keep that way.

Agreed! I am a health info professional with no doctoral degree and no student loans. I have 12 years of experience, and I make $240k
This is interesting to see! I’m aspiring for a job in the medical field and it’s nice to see how much different doctors make annually.

@@Kirmeinsbro this isn’t a struggle competition 💀
@@jcolonna12 Bro... you need to go back to middle school. Let's say you get paid 100$ a year, obviously, grocery shopping isn't your only bill, grocery shopping let's say is 10$, if groceries go up 20%, they are 12$, that means you still have 88$ as compared to 90$. If you got a 20% raise you would have 108$.
Medical doctors really deserve the money. They save lives, improve lives and carry a lot more responsibility every day than most people.
Sad that specialities that are still essential and difficult don't make the same. Know a paediatrician oncologist who feels like he cant leave his job because there I literally noone available in take his case load. Kids will die.

2:12 Aye! Dr. Webb! I used to watch this guy’s videos earlier this year I think. Day in the life as a neurosurgeon! He’s so chill.
As someone who's seen the inside of doctors offices and hospitals as a kid till adulthood, thank you all! Much respect and love ❤️
I used to work for a company that set up special retirement plans for doctors/surgeons. Basically, tax shelters. The highest paying doctors/surgeons I've seen from the data they sent us was for eye surgeons. They made from $1 to $3 million a year. At least that's what was reported to us.
What’s the name of the company?
they deserve it, thank you for being so transparent about this to all !
Huge respect for the transparency of these doctors. They deserve the most 💕
This is cool! thank you for making this video, salaries are always treated as such a taboo subject to talk about openly and its so counterintuitive.
5:20 now that’s an exaggerated expression, she was excited to flex on us 😂
1:33 buddy $180K is good money
That’s after 8 years of education, $300k+ in debt and 3 years minimum of residency.
3:57 its about 999,999 so 1 miliyon
That’s crazy. The most well paid doctors in Sweden get about 180-200k BEFORE tax. And it’s a well known fact taxes are pretty hefty here, especially if you’re a high wage earner
Our loan avg is 200k, 1/3 graduate with no debt which drags that avg down
That’s ok. I’m getting around 100k in Germany as an internal medicine/cardiology resident. In Romania such a resident would make just around 30-35k.
@@jzhvaeduh A 200k loan is easy to pay back when you make $1 million plus.
@@sebastianr1204 in america we make 60k as residents
I don't care how much any of these people make after all the work they put in. They're helping people and doing an overall good for society and the people they work for. Much respect and thank you to all.
This sounds like alot of money. AND IT IS. But this is all before taxes. So keep in mind, most of these doctors are probably making 60% that. So $250K seemed to be average in this video. So they are probably taking home around $100-$150K.
Also student loans!!
Tax in America is how much?!
Good motiviation to keep pushing through med school for me. Thanks y'all for your honesty and respect to each one of you.
I like how Dr Youn also included his other income streams - which the other youtuber doctors need to factor in too. Side hustling is serious business!

Swear down I didn't know we struggling that much doctors doring uber?
Gotta be cap I don't think doctors can even afford to do uber in their spare time
Thanks for breaking down how much doctors actually make Dr. Mike! This was really insightful and helpful. Keep up the great work!❤
Wife is anesthesia. Super location dependent. Place like Denver is 250k but somewhere more rural can be 5-600k for General. Pain mgmt can be anywhere from 400k- over a million if you are doing tons of procedures. Locums right now is 3-400/hr because they need them bad
Pain management... Sigh. You do know how they're making their money, right?

Would have loved to see a paramedic included too but thank you Dr.Mike! Love your educational content man! ☺️
Been missing Mama Dr. Jones on her channels- glad to see her here! 🥰
1:38 No pediatrician does it for the money but also mentions a yearly salary option($120k to $180k is a LOT of money depending on where you live) that most people would dream to have. $125 per hour at minimum is more than about 80% of the population of the United States.
They are relatively underpaid, the profession is hard, and they have to take out 2-500k in student loans to cover undergrad and med school
Keep in mind that its also expensive to be in the medical field to begin with. Taxes, student loans, malpractice insurance, etc. If someone is in the medical field solely for the money, then that person must not be so bright. There are better options with way less studying
Appreciate the transparency from everyone involved!
I am STUNNED by all the doctors/creators I love and their honesty, thank you all!
I’m an ups truck driver with no college degree and I made roughly $140k last year. We make between $40-49hr but also get mileage pay otr. My potential tops out around 200k so I invest in real estate on the side.
Is that a rough gig? I mean do they work tf out of you, or is it pretty nice and steady throughout the day? How do they make so much driving and delivering packages? Seems like too good to be true.
Way more than I originally thought. Eat a carnivore based diet to be healthy - meat, liver, fat with no plant matter or dairy. You will save a lot of money too.
If there are people in the world who deserve to make crazy amounts of money, doctors are sure one of them.

I 💜 Dr. Youn. Such a humble plastic surgeon.
Obsessed with financial transparency happening on social media rn. You can literally always make more money. If we don’t talk about money amongst our peers then there are huge pay discrepancies. We all have found out that someone at our work makes 5,10,20,100 dollars more per hour than us. We fix that by SPEAKING. ❤
It's a no-brainer when you could more than triple your income in an instant.
Canada has the same issue. The benefit of course is low healthcare costs for the people. But even if we switched to private care it would be tough to compete with the economic behemoth next door.
SO HAPPY to see Siobhan!!!! 💛💛
Would love a pt2 in the unseen areas of the medical field like labs or even prosthesis creators.
Actually, "A day in the life" series in areas most people have no insight into would be really cool and how it affects/correlates to how doctors diagnose and treat conditions. Mike Medical Tips, anyone?
Dr Mike could you please maybe get physiotherapists, occupational therapists, etc. on as well
That's probably going to make people even less likely to be one lol. Legit one of the most underpaid group of professions for the amount of training (in the US they never should have gone to the level of doctorate for PT, just more debt)
@@randomyoutubecommenterr Chiropractors too, they get close to the same amount of training hours in med school as an MD, but of course have a much lower earning potential. (Although no residency) They are neurology and musculoskeletal specialists.
I love how they are telling us how much they make but not really at the same time. Just a guesstimate since it varies.
"People in my profession make, on average, X dollars per year." :)
I want to salute all doctors/Health professionals for what they do. In my opinion they should make more then what they make, most professional athletes make more for one game and that a shame. I especially want to thank all who help others for free.
The one who brings the true reality of doctor’s life in front of their audiences, is the one who should be appreciated…..👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This video in a nutshell is why the NHS can't keep doctors, the UK doctor makes as much for a shift as the others make in 1-3 hours.
Doesn't help our funding for the NHS keeps getting worse too :(
Considerably less money spent on traininh however
The massive population of the US and its private healthcare will forever drag doctors away from Public health systems.

3:10 Dr. Danielle Jones might not make the same amount in New Zealand, but how much debt did she acquire to go to school? I wonder the differences of cost to become a dr across the world... Hmmm
I'm really glad that other countries are supporting healthcare specialists properly unlike what we have here in the Philippines. The information given by the podiatry lady is misleading. There is no way a podiatrist makes more money than a Family Medicine doctor(salary-based).
