I love these "100 years of" videos but this one was awful. No dolphin tattoo on the ankle? No mention of the full chest pieces of the 20s were hidden usually? Barbed wire around the arm?
Anything before 1940's would be rather hard to find anyone still alive with them. Which brings up the main problem with tattoo art--even the best of it is gone within a century. (Imagine if Michelangelo had only done tattoos...*tears fall*)
Alix Night. I remember seeing an middle aged woman with a tattoo in the 1950s. The only female tattoo I had seen until the little butterflies came along in the 80s. Tattoos were rare, even on men, before the 90s.
Ruka Shrestha actually I didn't I know there wasn't any guys but it would have been nice if they added that too for the early 00's you're rudeness is quite unnecessary
Oh come on... Heart with ribbon over it? Mom? Skull and roses? Barbed wire? Tribal arm/neck tattoo? Chinese characters? The dolphin craze? The dragonfly? Lotus? Infinity symbol? There are much more classic examples than the ones they showed.
This is a good start, but I really wish people would learn the broader history of tattoos, because it's so vast and interesting!! Even in just looking at the last 100 years, you're missing a whole lot in this video... Long before they were fashionable and trendy, they were full of deeply rooted cultural significance (I am thinking of particularly South Asia and parts of Africa - for instance, the Berber women of Algeria, whose tattoos carried cosmetic and therapeutic values). Even the swallow tattoo has far greater significance than just a "feminine" design. Furthermore, there are so many examples of tattoo use in counter-culture or protest movements - Russian prisons are a great example of a large scale tattoo "movement" ripe with significance. Tattoos are so awesome!
Smithsonian Magazine, PBS, National Geographic, and the like have put out pieces on the history of tattoos. Huffington Post has a decent article on the Algerian women I mentioned. I also recommend googling Whang-od Oggay - at 100 years old, she is the last remaining traditional Kalinga tattoo artist (she is currently teaching her grandniece the art so it can continue). :)
pinkprankie Thanks! I'll check them out. If you're interested (or for future posters) There's a documentary called Coloring Outside the Lines and the struggle for acceptance of tattoo artists who didn't always fit the mold. It was pretty interesting!
Things they missed: knuckle tats of the 2000s and 2010s, common face tattoos of the 2010s, neck tatts of pretty much any era, sleeves of the 2000s and 2010s, barbed wire tattoos of the 2000s.
I don't see the dolphines, skull, I love mom, Chinese words, thorns wrapped around arms, cartoons, pinup , and finally the natural inspired flower tattoos using real flowers dipped in ink to stencil.... I am disappointed was looking forward to seeing them 😂✔
This video was kinda weird. It's "100 years of tattoos" not "100 years of pinterest tattoo trends". Where's the mention of indigenous cultural tattoos? Tattoo genres? Regional popularity? Just seems very misleading and only scratches the mainstream surface of the body mod industry.
Vulpine Pierced&Inked well, it is an American magazine. so, if someone wants to learn about various cultures of tattoos, that person can research them itself.
Siyobin Blanco and no art really! they could have done so much better! airbrush? or find the real tattoo? they didn't even try and this video is trending!
No, that's lazy journalism and frankly bullshit. How the fuck can you be so nationalistically self centered that you think it's acceptable to omit most of the actual history of the history of a thing, only focusing on America, and pretend that it's an okay thing to do. You don't get to absorb a story based on shitty research and then tell people if they want actual facts they should do their own research. That kind of ideology breeds both arrogance and ignorance.
+HooverManeuver Yeah and lets not forget the amazing Chinese characters that probably said fuck off and dick foot but we'd never know the difference. the jokes on us. also tribal and tramp stamps are the worst. I also hate tattoos on legs. But this video was shit
My mom has all of theses except for the lip and eyebrow ones. And let me tell you, she is a literal work of art. She even has one of me when I was 6. I was obsessed with pirates and I wore ladybug rain hoots everywhere so she got a tattoo of me dressed as I pirate in ladybug boots on her calf. my mom is beautiful. She has two full sleeves of tattoos. When I was little, we used to cuddle and she would tell me the story about every little tattoo and it was the most relaxing thing to look at them.
Doesn't showcast trends either, besides the so called tramp stamps, they are ignoring the trend of tribal tattoos, dolphins, dragons, Chinese letters...
There needs to be some kind of regulations on who's allowed to make these types of videos... I could harp on the quality and lack of effort that was put in, but I won't. This video didn't even delve into tattoo styles or anything-which would have been a lot more interesting and understandable than having literally one tattoo represent an entire decade. Are you serious with that "80's" tattoo? Disappointing. Guess that's what happens when Allure pretends to know about fashion/art history
Yeah. They could have easily hired someone to paint them on. Seems easier than searching high and low for a sticker that matches. Although I'm sure they didn't search that far anyway
Really? You are taking this too seriously would you see on the youtube rules and regulations "Unless you're a educational channel you can't make informative videos" that's like saying "Unless you're a teacher no talking about knowledge"
*Ink Fish* Calm the fuck down. Do you understand the concept of jest? Secondly, there is no point of making these types of videos if no one gains anything from them; especially about historical things. Most of these videos are pointless attempts to go viral and 99% of the time, they're half-assed and inaccurate
I mean you tried and I like the effort, but this video definitely lacked any actual educational and informative text, it was all very general information. If you're going to make a series, at least do a little more research; a lot of tattoo styles were missed.
Meagan Snee I was thinking the same thing. This vid seems like it was made by someone who doesn't tattoo or generally isn't involved/around the industry at all.
BestOfChicago why would you believe that? Tattooing is not a new thing nor is it new to women. Tattooing or branding was even used to mark servants and slaves.
I can't even imagine how many poorly done Taz's were removed since tat removal became mainstream. Used to see a lot of tweety and woody woodpeckers as well.
Talk about phoning it in... I don't know anything about tattoos, but even I, the totally uninitiated, was like where are MOM, tribal tattoos, and the Asian characters everyone and their grandpappy's hound dog had not all that long ago?
watercolour tattoos would have been too hard to replicate with that shit they came up with, haha. I don't understand why they couldn't get people around with tattoos that either are from that time or replicate them perfectly/well enough?
Only probably is that female tattoos weren't popular until 60s... and tattoos in general weren't popular unless you were in the military or gang in the early 20th century
I feel like there should have been more research done on this topic before the creation of this video. Perhaps find people who have tattoos for a tattoo video.....
Some people like the look of inner lip tattoos and like knowing that they can either keep the art to themselves and not show anyone or simply move their lip so you can see it. Personally not my style, but I've seen some really cool ones
2010s have so far been probably the most exciting decade in tattoo development. New equipment, new styles, a ton of very popular new motives, a thorough de-stigmatisation of tattooed people, etc., etc., and you show 'tiny tattoos' and 'inner lip tattoos' as the hallmark of this decade? Gimme a break.
Le Avocado yeah the current era is the full sleeve or the hot skinny chicks getting huge ones up their side/ribs. I'm glad I grew up in tramp stamp times cuz I know I'd have half my body covered if I was 18 again lol
My favourite fake tattoo shown there was the butterfly one, I'd gotten one but I think Allure could show more celebrity like tattoos because they way more cooler then most of the ones shown in this video. Anna Nicole Smith, Angelina Jolie and of course Rihanna tattoos are cool but I think alternative model Jasmine C Dolls's is the best out all them she gots the COOLEST back and belly tattoos ever!
1960s: On March 13, 1965, Asturian photo model Morgan Houston (1944-2005). Nashville in her death and illiberal the 2005 year (aged 91). From 44 to 05.

asphodelale omg not real people from the 40s just someone with that sort of tattoo
asphodelale dde
Alix Night.
I remember seeing an middle aged woman with a tattoo in the 1950s. The only female tattoo I had seen until the little butterflies came along in the 80s. Tattoos were rare, even on men, before the 90s.
Try watching Cut Video's version of 100 Years of Americana Tattoo, and the research video. No shit here, they actually did a tattoo video.
Nature imagery:
Shows dragon tattoo...
As a tattoo artist myself, all I can say is: No.
LOL
Lmao
Even me that I'm not a tattoo artist could realize that it's a NO . So I can imagine people who has some knowledge...
Hey you might do different styles and I don’t think you were alive in most of those decades so stop with the attitude and just enjoy the video
No to what? They’re just temporary. What’s the problem with that?
Where's the butterfly tattoo on the shoulder that everyone got after seeing A Walk to Remember? 😂
Wahhh..
How could they NOT add the barbwire tattoos guys we're getting during the 2000's
mizzypink8 Yeah the tribal trend.
You answered your own fucking question lol. "guys". Do you see any guys in this video?
Ruka Shrestha actually I didn't I know there wasn't any guys but it would have been nice if they added that too for the early 00's you're rudeness is quite unnecessary
Or how about the underboob tattoo a lot of girls are getting currently? I thought for sure that would be the last one!
No its the douchebag guys who get the tribal shit going around there arms
This video is like one of those assignments you wait till the day before to do and turns out like shit.
LaLunaa just happened yesterday 😣
LaLunaa you jus busted someone out!😂
LaLunaa yep
lol i love your user name!
your user name is awesome!!

Tribal tattoos anyone? Those were like an era all on their own!
Chantal Said 90s and 00s lol and they are coming back 😑😑😑
True
Oh come on... Heart with ribbon over it? Mom? Skull and roses? Barbed wire? Tribal arm/neck tattoo? Chinese characters? The dolphin craze? The dragonfly? Lotus? Infinity symbol? There are much more classic examples than the ones they showed.
imakefoodhappen not even a tweety pie ha ha

imakefoodhappen FAIRIES??!! bOYFRIENDS NAMES?! ROSES?
Don't forget religious tattoos such as a cross.
totally...they showed NOTHING😐
This is a good start, but I really wish people would learn the broader history of tattoos, because it's so vast and interesting!! pinkprankie Yeees to all of this!!
pinkprankie Any recommendations to learn about all of this?
I'll check it out! Thanks!
Things they missed: knuckle tats of the 2000s and 2010s, common face tattoos of the 2010s, neck tatts of pretty much any era, sleeves of the 2000s and 2010s, barbed wire tattoos of the 2000s.
Me: expecting that they would draw the tats out.
Allure: uses the water tattoos.
Me: ...
trousers: Me: Bruh...
So they just couldn’t find people with real tattoos......
It’s allure they use models not just random people of the street and mist models don’t have big tattoos
why does it matter..
I don't see the dolphines, skull, I love mom, Chinese words, thorns wrapped around arms, cartoons, pinup , and finally the natural inspired flower tattoos using real flowers dipped in ink to stencil....
I am disappointed was looking forward to seeing them 😂✔
Ciao Bella you forgot the Chicano og tattoos to…
Ciao Bella is
I have seen them....
Agreed, just some random person who isn't involved with the industry trying to make RUclips revenue.
Genesis Baca UGH and the peel on tats? insulting!
that's be too long of a video probably
No doubt, remember the stupid Chinese character fad? and the fairly recent star fad?
Exactly, lazy journalism
This is literally the biggest fail ...

This sucked guys cmon, try a LITTLE harder with the research
I thought that it sucked too lol
The top comments are always so fucking negative, says a lot about everyone’s personality.
Skate Witch
Why don't you make a video with he RIGHT information then?
Skate Witch I thought I was being really bitchy lol! It was just so half-assed.
This was a poor video that didn't do tattoos justice. It skipped over so much historical and cultural meaning context.
Siyobin Blanco I think they were mainly trying to show where tattoos would go on the body
Vulpine Pierced&Inked well, it is an American magazine. so, if someone wants to learn about various cultures of tattoos, that person can research them itself.
Thats cause they don't care about that. Allure is only trying to get easy clicks for money with these type of easy to make quick videos.
Siyobin Blanco and no art really! they could have done so much better! airbrush? or find the real tattoo? they didn't even try and this video is trending!
No, that's lazy journalism and frankly bullshit. oh the butterfly back tattoos and barbed wire too
All the fucking tribal...
+HooverManeuver Yeah and lets not forget the amazing Chinese characters that probably said fuck off and dick foot but we'd never know the difference. the jokes on us. also tribal and tramp stamps are the worst. I also hate tattoos on legs. But this video was shit
there was an eye tattoo on the ancle of count olaf from lemony snickets books. just reminds me of that
man i love that movie...violet and klaus are SO hot
"100 Years of Female Tattoo Trends" would be a much more accurate title.
Yeah I was like “where are the badass tattoos men got during the war??”
This is more like... 100 years of tattoo TRENDS. This isn't a very good video of showcasing the 100 years of tattoos art styles
Doesn't showcast trends either, besides the so called tramp stamps, they are ignoring the trend of tribal tattoos, dolphins, dragons, Chinese letters...
Hannah Stahl
Hi
Oh, this isn't about trends? All their other videos (100 years) seem to be about trends, so I thought this was too.
2014 Owls, 2015 infinity symbols, 2016 lions, 2017 roses, 2018 don't know yet

Mister Winkybluff I agree! this video took little to no effort. stick on tattoos?! may have well just shown pictures of real tattoos!
Yeah. They could have easily hired someone to paint them on. Seems easier than searching high and low for a sticker that matches. Although I'm sure they didn't search that far anyway

The worst "100 years of.." so far 😞
Carolina Bueno definitely!
why?
??
i just made the likes to 2017 XD i want a cookie
the hell?
did something as tragic as inner lip tattoos really exist bc if they did ... girl
harpreet yep. Kendall Jenner has one.
lmao i got one when i was 15, biggest mistake of my life (going to the dentist is so embarrassing)
harpreet some of them look good tho haha
Bella Marconato what Is it ? (or what does it say)
harpreet ethan dolan has one.
"lower back tattoo"
*Tramp Stamp
I wonder if they will recreate these videos in 100 years from now
Teacher: and in 2017 everyone had one or two sleeves of tattoos
LOL
this way of summarizing tattoos is so misrepresented; also the "feminine birds" are called sailor jerry birds lol,,,
Meagan Snee I was thinking the same thing. This vid seems like it was made by someone who doesn't tattoo or generally isn't involved/around the industry at all.
Meagan Snee I have a sailor jerry pinup girl on my forearm. Haha I think I should get the birds too they're so cute!
BestOfChicago why would you believe that? Tattooing is not a new thing nor is it new to women. Tattooing or branding was even used to mark servants and slaves.
sailor jerry birds? you do realize they are tattoo swallows, sailor jerry wasn't the only one to tattoo them or even originate that design.
Meagan Snee Swallow tattoos are an old sailor thing- it represents how many nautical miles you have sailed and was also supposed to be for luck.
Am I the only one who loves traditional tattoos.
Izzy Wilson Not at all! American traditional and neotraditional tattoos are very common in certain places. :)
It may be 2017, but those are still my favorite! Most of my work is traditional.
Izzy Wilson American traditional tattoos will always be my favorite
what is an American traditional tattoo?
meagen kleiner Stuff like Sailor Jerry. Brightly colored and bold black lines.
I payed more attention to the music than to the tattoos.
This is the first video I have ever watched where the comment section is much more useful and informative than the actual video
Those 1920's tattoos were the best! LOVE OLD SCHOOL TATTOOS
I heard if you watch closely at 0:00 - 2:45 you will possibly see tattoos people had throughout history.... to bad i could never find it
same here lol
XD

"100 Years of the Absolute Least Popular Tattoos Ever, Done Only on Women"
my art teacher told me that when she was in highschool/college in the 90s it was really popular to have little cartoon characters as tattoos
Yep I got the butterfly one in the 90's 🦋 it still looks great, the color held up very well 👍🏼
There's a lot missing in this video it wasn't even informative. Allure, don't half-ass your research
ruddiko I agree!
that was so vague and poorly researched. Disappointing for such an interesting subject
I would have said watercolour tattoos for 2010 but whatever
watercolour tattoos would have been too hard to replicate with that shit they came up with, haha. I don't understand why they couldn't get people around with tattoos that either are from that time or replicate them perfectly/well enough?
yeah it's poorly done it would have been better that way but at least they tried
Love this channel... N their concept.
They also used tattoos over 2,000 years ago to treat pain. It was their pain killer back in the day
2018 is face tats
This video was made in 2017...
Only probably is that female tattoos weren't popular until 60s... and tattoos in general weren't popular unless you were in the military or gang in the early 20th century
the 20th century ones still weren't very accurate
more like until the 80s and they actually became common like 10 years ago.
I feel like there should have been more research done on this topic before the creation of this video. Perhaps find people who have tattoos for a tattoo video.....
2.20 her eyes are magical. I hipnotized!
Tattoos give me the chills
0:44 She's so darn beautiful! 😍
i feel old when i see 2010s
Why the hell would you get a tattoo on your inner lip? If you cannot see the tattoo it's pointless.
TestedModz Exactly.
I don't always get my tattoos so other people can see them. I get all of my tattoos for me, Because I like them, and they mean something to me.
Miley Cyrus got one. Gross.
TestedModz but it’s the key to wakanda!
Some people like the look of inner lip tattoos and like knowing that they can either keep the art to themselves and not show anyone or simply move their lip so you can see it. Personally not my style, but I've seen some really cool ones
Okay but these girls are BEAUTIFUL.
i know it's not extremely informative but can people stop hating it is actually very interesting
ok lol im gonna say something irrelevant:
The woman at 0:57 is honestly really pretty
They couldnt find actual people with actual stories and ACTUAL tattoos
1960s was the best, the one with dragon. LOVE 'EM.
This is nice... love this video.
The 20s and 60s tattos are lit
What about the anchors? Didn't Sailors back in the 40's and 50's get that tat on their arms and forearms?!
Wwwxxx Pewwtww sexter
My mum has a lip tattoo that says "go die" she has many others but they're in a collage on her entire arm
Trash.
This is sooo inaccurate. I was cringing
Ashley Faulls same!
Yes, very uninformative. I think they should've mentioned how unusual it was for a woman to have tattoos before the 80's.
I love these videos
they should do a people have heavy tattoos for a week video, like if you agree
I feel like you know nothing about tattoos your just trying to get clicks
The chick who got the inner lip tattoo was hot asf!
isnt she tho
Ok but the last one is cute, I think that will be my first choice ;w;
That flower at the end was cute af!
The lip tattoos really creepy me out. Also that must be super painful! 😱
Every thing seems accurate in these video til the current era.. is it just me?
the style of them seems off but the placement follows up with recent trends
Le Avocado yeah the current era is the full sleeve or the hot skinny chicks getting huge ones up their side/ribs. I'm glad I grew up in tramp stamp times cuz I know I'd have half my body covered if I was 18 again lol
The girl with short hair is beautiful!
These are so neat to watch.
Y'all know what tattoo they had in the 40s.... They just won't show it on screen.
I don't. Do you mind telling me what it was? Please and thank you
My favourite fake tattoo shown there was the butterfly one, I'd gotten one but I think Allure could show more celebrity like tattoos because they way more cooler then most of the ones shown in this video. Anna Nicole Smith, Angelina Jolie and of course Rihanna tattoos are cool but I think alternative model Jasmine C Dolls's is the best out all them she gots the COOLEST back and belly tattoos ever!

Shawn Mendes has the same tattoo on his hand in black and white❤️
Hahahah.. I was thinking of the same thing #mendesarmy
This was fun to watch c:
This video pretty much sums up why I'm afraid to get a tattoo.
why is that sergeant rank upside down?

It says "100 years if tattoos"
not "100 years of women's tattoos"
Supergirly Sofia "Allure" is a women's magazine so I assume they used female models for no reason other than to appeal to their audience. I guess they mostly did women's tattoo "trends" throughout history.
lee oh, thank you.
but still, they should have added "womens" in their title so as not to mislead their audience or people coming to allure for the first time, who hadn't known it was a women's magazine.
They Forgot the trend of 2016, The Blackout Tattoos 😕
oh yea I forgot only women got tattooed ever
Allure is a women's fashion and lifestyle magazine.
D. W. So a guy can't watch there videos
Shiny Shuckle just because Allure is about women doesn't mean men can't watch them
god damn SOMEONE has to get triggered over the smallest things in a simple video, don't they?
yea that would be you sweetie lol. They've been doing these types of videos for a while and they always have a men's version. Could u wait a bit? chill.
I briefly read the comments and thought there was no way this video can be that bad. It is. It really is...
the model with scoliosis!!! love
The writing goes so fast💨
BUT🍑
I enjoyed it🤡
They are so beautiful too😽
But these are more trends then fashion👗
I would have expected a little more from the 70s
People (man AND women) used to tatoo their family crest on their body too in the late 1800's, but showing your body was kinda taboo, so no one else except for the partner could see it.
Those eyebrows are funny 😂😂
