Mark making in mixed media art

- In this video I chat about mark making that I enjoy in my art, and also give some inspirational ideas on how to incorporate your own marking. I paint primarily with watercolour and acrylic paints, and show some supplies I like to use for marking overtop dried backgrounds, and swatches. I use many different mixed media supplies, such as permanent pens, pencils, acrylic paint pens, wax crayons and water-soluble pencil crayons.
Mention:
140 lb watercolour/ mixed media paper (Canson XL or Artist Loft are good brands)
Faber Castell gelatos and watersoluble pencil crayons. (Supracolour soft II is the pencil I tend to use)
Uniball Signo Japanese bronze fine pen
Posca water-based acrylic paint pens (white fine tip and black medium tip)
Studio gel black permanent pen (Dollarama)
Gelly roll pens (I used neon)
Neo colour Caran d'ache wax crayons
Stabilo woody watersoluble crayons
Strathmore sketch book for ideas with pen or pencil
Ruled index card book
Jane Davenport mixed media papers
Rae Missigman "Paint Play Explore" book
Beam paints also sells mini watercolour books by "Stonehenge" , cold pressed and hot pressed.
Last September I made and bound a book that I have dedicated to mark making. I used good quality paper, hand stitched the binding, and made some boxes on some of the pages. Since then I have been filling pages with marks, symbols, visual textures, and small graphic sketches. What a personal resource it has become. Any time I see something that sparks my interest, I create a visual reminder of that element. I loved seeing how you are compiling yours. Thank you for the gift of your time and inspiration.
Your handmade book of ideas and inspiration sounds wonderful. My challenge is sticking with just one or two, as I'm all over the map right now! You're inspiring me with your comment!
I want to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. I try to paint along with you, doing my own thing while inspired by your mark making, your color instinct, and your easy banter as you're working along. I feel like I'm sitting in your kitchen or in your art room with you and it's just such an easy, comfortable, creative session. It's especially nice for me because when I was in Calgary over Christmas to visit my daughters I managed to break my arm... My dominant arm ... And it's an uphill struggle to work with my arm and regain my fine motor control. Working along with your abstract, art poetry style helps me let go of my internal criticism that my hand and arm are still behaving in unpredictable ways. I am so happy I discovered your channel.
I'm in Yellowknife, by the way
oh thanks for this lovely message. i’m sorry to hear about your injury while visiting your daughters here. hope you are healing steadily. i hope to do more videos where there is little fine motor control needed. I appreciate your comments and encouragement . thankyou . love to yellowknife!
Thank you so much Allison, I really really enjoyed watching you and listening to your great advice. I certainly found you inspiring and very very helpful too. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome! Thankyou♥️
So much inspiration! I find it so helpful watching you mark making and I'm glad you are planning to do more! Being able to watch so many of your videos in the last week has really got my creative juices flowing. Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks Cathy! I appreciate that. xx
I love all the white space between the colors, something I want to focus on. I’m stuck home recovering from a quadruple broke leg and I can’t tell you how much your videos are helping through such a difficult time! You are so generous with your all that you share. I’ve been working on cards for the past week. You have somehow instilled in me for the first time in my long art journey to just paint for myself and for healing which I’m finding liberating. I just want to say thank you!
Thankyou . Sending healing your way.❤️
Thank you Allison for another hour of sharing inspiration with us. I do enjoy your videos especially demonstrating mark making. I find already just watching your videos that I’m drawn to the botanicals.i like the “less is more” look with white space.
thanks so much
These small cards would make a great oracle deck!
Haha. After commenting this, I totally binged all your videos and found it it IS a deck. Which I hope to buy soon!
Your art and style definitely inspire me! ❤❤❤
thanks Alyson 🥰
Besides your absolutely beautiful artwork, one thing I truly love about your videos and work is your authenticity. It's truly reflected in your art and in your videos. I personally love that you "get off track"...because that's how so many of our brains work and id much rather have that than a "perfect video" or piece of art. It's a really calming and inspiring experience watching your videos and your process. Thank you for sharing!! I'm so inspired by you! ❤
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate you watching and this encouraging note! Much appreciated Jessica
the first card you worked on looks like a tree on a hillside in a faraway otherworldly place.I love it! it's got a magical vibe ✨
thanks for saying this JoJo,. I appreciate you.
So excited for this new video. I also wanted to say that my video output has been at a standstill because of the editing. Watching your videos and loving them has given me the inspiration to try it as well. So please know that a lot of us do not care about fancy editing and just want to spend time listening to your process. I’m hoping mine will be welcome as well. Thank you for the inspiration you give in all areas of art making.
yes- editing is so time consuming and hopefully not necessary for your teaching style too?! hope you give it a go. And thanks for watching my videos and all of your support. xx
❤❤❤ I look forward to your videos!!
Thank you for saying that Wendi! And coming back when I upload new videos! Much appreciated
I am glad that it has started to warm up in Calgary. Here too in Oakbank, Mb. I wanted to let you know that I ordered a few of the Beam paints - and I absolutely adore them. They are so wonderful to work with. I will definitely be buying more colours as the $ allow...LOL I wanted to ask if there were any Courses on Skillshare that you would recommend for people who are trying to find their own style or just for additional inspiration. I am a retired 64 yr old widow and I do paint everyday - but I still haven't been able to figure out my style - and I have been painting since 1995 when I found Folk Art painting. Always love your videos. I have actually hauled out some of my "stash" inks and acrylics and have started "playing. It is quite fun exploration. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and inspiration.
Great question about skillshare classes- I will keep you in mind if I stumble on any of this topic/finding your artist style. It really comes down to showing up everyday for yourself and letting yourself make the art that makes you happy... no rules,... just the doing will get you there, and play and exploration ! that's great you started with Folk Art Painting... I will possibly do a video on how we can hone in on our own style...
I love your videos so much ! It’s so clear with your explications, your very kind teaching and demonstrations for us all. Thank you very much for sharing your amazing art on RUclips. Love from France :-)
Thank you so much, Sylvie and love from Canada to France!

Loved this video so much! Thanks Allison! ❤
You are so welcome! thanks Michele
Hi Allison. I may have missed it in the video, but where do you get these watercolor paper cards? Or, do you cut them yourself? Also at 32:59 with the Find Rainbows card, I would love to see you create one like that card in a video. Also, I have had no luck with WHITE gel pens :-( I cannot find any that will mark well and I have tried many different brands. Again, I would love to see you make the Find Rainbows card or something similar because it helps to see your mark-making and that card stuck out to me.
I make my cards and also purchase precut cards. I should have a link in the description if they were bought precut. And yes- the white ones are hit and miss and I haven’t found one I love that is also reliable yet. And I will be doing more mark making videos. Thanks
Thank you for this inspiring video. I’m still finding my mark making inspirations. I’m very much a spiral and circle person. I love watching your videos and hearing you talk about your watercolour journey. I love your little Stonehenge pads. I’ve searched endlessly for them and I can’t find them in Australia. I can only get the larger ones on Amazon Australia. Looking forward to your next video 🫶
You are so welcome! This is the first time I've purchased/used Stonehenge watercolour paper. Out of the 2, I liked the cold pressed 140lb pad... I suppose you could cut your own but I know how tedious that can be... I may try to "tear" a large sheet with my sharp metal ruler, as I want to achieve that slightly irregular cotton edge with the sheets... Thanks for watching from Australia!
@@allisondawrant I bought an A4 size Stonehenge pad of black watercolour paper. I wanted black for my beautiful Kuretake pearl and starry sets. More fire card and bookmark making. The colours stand out on the black paper. I was lucky enough to purchase a heavy duty paper cutter on sale. What a game changer, it cuts up to 30 sheets at a time. So I may just use that to make little papers. I have a die that cuts jagged rough edges, but not used it yet. Have a lovely weekend 🫶
school composition book, art basics clear gesso to seal....fave pencils, gouache & ballpoint pens...shazam!!! from wannabe to happy... zentangle tiles in all sizes, punches for shapes, stencils & used gift cards for marks...girl, no accident you chose beam paints bec you beam the rainbow & we all catch the rays...
wow- and you speak Art Poetry through your comments to me always. I know it's you when I start to read the comment:) Thank you for reflecting light back to me. Happy Creating
I have really been enjoying your videos. On this video you mentioned that you had done a previous video on mark making inspired by Rae Missigman. I was hoping you could help point me to where I can view that one as well. I’m a big fan of her!
I think I have the book "Play Paint Explore" by Rae, in the thumbnail photo on my video list? Hopefully you can find it that way or by searching my name and her name on here? I'm just learning how to become more organized on my channel.
Could you tell me what kind of glue did you use on the wooden pallette? The one that you glued watercolor paper on the pallette! I loved that idea 💡! THANKS 😊
hi! yes- I used liquetex matte gel medium. (and Arches 140 lb cold pressed paper). hope that helps.
@@allisondawrant Thanks 😊 so much!
I have a mark making pinterest board, it's very helpful.
that's a great idea. I really need to start one myself.
What size are your cards? I love them!
90x125 mm
Do you first use gesso please do more from the beginning
Sometimes i use gesso if I’m working on canvas or paper.
Did you cut the cards yourself?
can’t recall as i have done videos with both precut and cut cards that i’d cut.
Allison, hi. Im just wondering, are you ok? Its been a while 😊 x Nell
I’m well and appreciate the check in . xx
@@allisondawrant ha! Great. Watched your latest video. I looked for Betty Krause, but found she goes by Betty Franks now! Good to see you back x Nell.
