What a great video!! :)I just started with mixed media especially for the purpose of playing and let loose! It's great that you explain it so well here. And it comes in super handy that I used to be subscribed to an art box & already had some stuff that was in my “giving away basket“ that I took out again to play even further like the Inktense Blocks I really like them a lot they have sooo much pigment!
The mix of burnt sienna and viridian is so beautiful 🥺I almost cried 😆 I never get tired of the magic of the colors, pure happiness and joy 🙌 amazing video! 💯
Thank you so much!! For sure, it definitely connects to me on a soulful level - just something about textures and colours and all that comes with creativity makes my heart sing 🥰 I love that it connects so deeply with you too!
Thank you for all the inspo, katie! And well basically for your channel! I have inktense, neocolor and all the others just stashed away in my studio--have no idea how to use them--and at some point was contemplating selling them all so thanks so much. I've been having a great time playing with all the supply the way you do it ❤
Oh thank you so much, that is so wonderful to hear! 🥰 Sounds like you have the perfect mixed media supplies right there, hope you have fun and enjoy playing and creating! 😊
This was wonderful Katie, so informative and well explained. I love how loose you work, your colour palette and how you are able to lay down a base layer of colours/shapes and turn it into a beautiful landscape🧡
Love the video and absolutely agree, mixed media is a great way of letting loose and getting in touch with a more intuitive/creative side. I’m hosting my first mixed media workshop soon for 2SLGBTQ youth and chose collage as the medium because it’s so wonderful for having fun and putting doubts to rest. Great work, keep it up 😊
Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts! Totally agree about it helping to go with the flow of creativity and intuition, I always prefer that way of working! Best of luck for your workshop, it sounds fantastic! 🤩
Brilliant video … you’ve really got the basics of mixed media succinctly explained. You’ve also made it clear what constitutes mixed media and what you can create using different mediums in your art. Thank you for part one I’m looking forward to part two.
Such a wonderful and informative video. Can’t wait for the next one. Thank you for all of the time you take to make such great tutorials. Love all of your videos so much.
Well done Katie! This was very helpful and will be especially to someone wanting to learn about mixed media and the do’s and don’t. Because there are some as you showed today. Thank you for this, I can tell it took you quite a bit of time making this video. ❤❤❤
Thank you Kathy 🥹💛 These videos have been on my list to make for a while but I was a bit overwhelmed with how to condense the information! So I'm really glad it all makes sense and has been recieved well 🥰
Ooooh wow ! 🎉 This video is so helpful and inspiring ! 🤩 I love your tutorials so much and I like to watch, how you build up your wonderful artwork ! Can't wait to see Part 2 of this wonderful, interesting Video ! ❤🤗🥰😃 I'd looove to see moooore of your helpful Tutorials (or maybe a MixedMedia / Sketchbooking - Course in the future...😉😍🤗) Thank you so much for sharing your helpful Tips and Tricks, Katie! 🩷💜🩵💙🤎💛🧡
Aw it's truly my pleasure, thank you so much for your lovely comment! 🥰💜 I mostly share tutorials on my Patreon but a course would be definitely be fun to create in the future! I wish I had more time in the day to do everything I want to 😂🙈 Thank you for watching 💛
Can't wait for part 2! I primarily use watercolor but have Intense, colored pencils and Neocolor II with some other odds and ends. I love mixed media works by artists like you but struggle with how to combine my various media so this is really helpful!
Great video, thank you Katie, love your approach and style! So helpful to get a peek into your process and way of thinking, it really helps to loosen up and dare to be creative! ❤😊
Playing with art supplies is so important, I feel like I learn and discover so much when I do 😄 Great video as always with many helpful tips. I’m still struggling a bit with being more loose in my art, so I’ll definitely give your suggestions a go 😄🩷
I think the reason one is not “supposed” to use certain materials over certain others is because over time the top layer will flake off -e.g watercolour or watery gouache on top of acrylic, or acrylic on top of oil. Though that probably matters less in a skatechbook
This is so helpful! Im only starting to play around with paint. I have gouache and watercolour and i've been playing around it and put coloured pencil on top of it to make some details.. this is so helpful for me to start, although only with what i have 😍
I'm so glad!! That sounds like you have the perfect materials to start with for sure, I started with just gouache and pencils before my habit got out of hand 🤣
This was great, thanks Katie. I do think that idea of creating a course is a good idea!!! I've done some with another artist, and learned so much. I do love your work, and your encouragement and engagement through Patreon. This video gives me more ideas to play. 😁
Lovely work and very inspiring video! I consider myself pretty tight in my approach to painting, so it’s very liberating thinking of painting this way. Hope I manage to try it!
Oooh what a great challenge, you'll have to let me know how it goes Kathy! I keep meaning to practice people again but I always default to landscapes 😆
I love to see how you create beautiful art from putting down shapes first. Forgive me if this is an ignorant question. With the first green based shape, why do you choose to put down the green layer if you cover it with blue then? Thank you!!
Thanks Judit, not ignorant at all! I didn't have any plans initially for what I was painting so usually I wouldn't add a blue on top of a green! I usually work on top of a neutral, pink or orange tone base layer instead and I'd add a blue on top of that -- I find it often ties it in well with the rest of the painting and adds a warmth or depth to the colour than it would on it's own!
OK but the way you ended up making different mini landscapes as you were demonstrating with random colours was so cool!
Aah thanks Sam!! 😄 I decided to just go for it in this video and it all worked out! ☺️
What a great video!! :)I just started with mixed media especially for the purpose of playing and let loose! It's great that you explain it so well here. Thank you so much Kristin, so glad you enjoyed it! Love that you had some of the supplies to play with as well, the Inktense blocks are so fun!! 🥰
Everyone interested in mixed media should watch this Katie. I had a lightbulb moment, and that’s after a year of playing with my materials. 😍
Oh that is SO good to hear!! I'm so glad, thank you Eve 🥰

Yes that's true, especially for selling original paintings or commissioned work! Definitely not something I ever think about with sketchbooks 😊
I love the colours you create!

Try the Stabilo Woodys, they work perfect over the neocolor2 🤩
Oh yes I have some! I do wish that they came in more muted/natural colours though 😃
This is very inspiring
Thank you so much, so glad to hear it! 😊
I would love to see you do some loose.portraits. Could be so fun! I'm about to start the 100 heads challenge I think ❤
Oooh what a great challenge, you'll have to let me know how it goes Kathy! I keep meaning to practice people again but I always default to landscapes 😆
Katie, what was the medium you began with - in the dropper bottle? Was it fluid or liquid acrylic? Acrylic ink?
It was acrylic ink! 😊 In Sap Green and Portrait Pink 🧡
I love to see how you create beautiful art from putting down shapes first. Forgive me if this is an ignorant question. With the first green based shape, why do you choose to put down the green layer if you cover it with blue then? Thank you!!

Do you use both watercolour and acrylic quache too?
I do! I use Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolours and Holbein Acrylic gouache 😊
Could you please share your old art style? Just curious:)
I don't have much online anymore but here are a few I found way back on my Insta! 😊 instagram.com/p/BLO2QkVjpJt/ instagram.com/p/PAGWIMBjGH/
