I’ve just discovered you and I’m in love. I adore granulating colours and I never thought “why not mix my own?” The amount I’ve spent on premixes! I just spent a fortune at Jackson’s but it’s my birthday this month so that’s how I’m justifying it this time haha. I am so excited to make some mixes! Thank you for this video x
PBk11 is such a strong tinter that I decided to try Daniel Smith’s zoisite for granulating blends. So far, so good - same granulation, but less overpowering black.
I really enjoyed this video. Last year I did somerhing similar, I was planning to treat myself to one of those rather expensive Schmincke supergranulation sets and was trying to pick one. Then I realised that there are actually not that many different pigments in the sets and I have most of them already. I ended up buying a PBk11 and a PY159 instead.
I love it 🎉 Thank you for sharing so much good info 🎉 I love DS Lunar Black pbk11 and a tube will last a lifetime 😂 I'm in my mixing mode as of late, first with granulations and then graphite powder where I made a bunch of colors, to Buff Titanium and Jean Brilliant for achieving the most natural botanical hues I could never imagine! I'm now ready to study botanical painting just due to such a discovery 🎉 love your content! Thanks again!
Have you heard about the Mission Gold Granulating Watercolors??? Alice Lim released a video on them and I think they're due to be released next week, September 1st or 2nd???
Sketches blue! I've found the Iron Chrome Brown from Roman Szmal to be great for this too! Strong granulator and mutes the phthalos and primaries beautifully. And of course throwing some Aquarius Black in the mix is always fun
If you continue using the same concept you'll find that paints that are only slightly granulating also show up as better granulators with a smooth, transparent colour. It's my favourite way of making cadmium red (QoR Cad. Red Light) or an orange PY216 granulate with a bright, clear yellow for example. 🥰
Loved your mixes and particularly that you were making them and encouraging others to too. I cannot afford all those lovely boxes of super expensive granulating tubes when I already had most of the pigments in several different versions anyway. I have a little tin of Kremer one of which is white, and they made me such an amazing array of unique colours because there were cobalts already there…. And this weird dark earth that looks dry and unprintable with, but give just great mixes. So if such a small set would produce lovely colours and mixes why buy ready mixed. Having said that I did buy some of Jackman’s granulating darks and am learning from them. I so like that you did your own experiment and how lovely are the results! And you can overlay a granulators on top of a smooth colour if you let it try thoroughly and do not disturb either too much…. I prefer scrubs as a prefix, so mentioning scrubs blue instead of your suggestion. Thanks a million this video has made my evening!
I have Schmincke mahogany brown PBr33. I’m so glad you had your happy accident with PB15. The color is gorgeous! I never knew PG7 and PR122 made such a surprising and stunning mix. Your mixes were interesting to watch. Thank you for sharing!❤
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this and listening to your train of thought. Excellent examples, very clear and large. Many thanks for your hard work on this video. I like the simplicity of the "Sketcher's" names. Best wishes from the Pacific NW. (Listening to you makes me pine for England - I miss it so much!)
Granulating watercolors?! How beautiful!! I didn't know this was a thing. Some of the Holbein swatches are especially nice. Misty Morning & the Shadow Violets are lovely too. Also the Phthalo Blue group. 😍
I love this!! it's so fun watching you experiment with color because I feel like not that many people on youtube are drawn to those super bright quins and phthalos like you are, but the results are always stunning 😊 I've had the same difficulty with cobalt green, and I really recommend you give chromium green oxide a try!! it's very granulating, higher tinting so you don't need as much, and it's cheaper to boot! I haven't tried mixing Autumn Green with it just yet, but that's actually the exact reason I bought it! I think you could get pretty close to Autumn Green with it 😜
I LOVE the editing in this video, was delightful to watch! These colour mixes are beyond beautiful, I think Sketches blue is my favourite! Can't wait to see how you incorporate these in your paintings
Great recipe blends! I love doing this and will try some of your blends! It’s been a busy summer for me with gardening so I haven’t had much time to paint. I have so many happy places, painting, gardening, writing, my pets…😻🦜 But it’s nearly fall and the gardening is going to slow down.
I was given a 1/2 pan of volcano yellow and though it granulates, one needs to really ‘scrub’ at it to lift enough out of the pan😮hence, I won’t have it for long … Another color that you may like to play with is naturally granulating PG18- viridian. I recommend the M Graham or DaVinci versions as good rewetters. Sketcher’s Blue is amazing 🤩!
I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard that Fabriano paper is particularly good for getting granulation, especially the rough press. It's fairly delicate paper, though (doesn't handle scrubbing well).
These mixes were gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your experiments. It’s always nice to know what unique color combinations you can mix (the phthalo green and quinacridone magenta mix was very interesting) with colors you already have. Although I still might have to get a few of these pigments. 😅
Some amazing mixes there! Thank you for sharing your experiments and process, I'm really interested in mixing my own colours, this is very helpful. Subscribed!
Love the video! The half pan of volcano yellow worked really great for me. It's so weird that the paint from the tube does that. I'm happy with my purchase: it's sort of a bright yellow but with a low tinting strength. Really interesting but you have to be careful with mixes, as it's easily overpowered
I had the same issue with Schminke’s volcano yellow, but the Winsor Newton version is *much* better. I’ve noticed that binder problem with about 75% of my Schminke purchases - I don’t think I’ll be buying them anymore.
i have used volcano yellow from a pan and for me it works well but i have to put a drop of water like a minute before use. never used it in a tube though.
@@SketchesnScrubsIt does absolutely granulate. The particles just aren't as big as in Schmincke's one (I don't have the same trouble with my tube from them btw) and it had more of a base colour to it. I absolutely love it. 😊
@@SMCCRADY2 WN’s version granulates, but it’s not very obvious until you mix it with another color. I had the same binder issue with the Schminke version, but the WN works well for me.
I love this video. So interesting. I have a problem when I click on a link someone has to the Jackson's site. It just goes to the front page of the site, but never to the actual thing you have mentioned. I live in the US and wondered if other people have that issue who live elsewhere. Every other RUclipsr that has a link except Jackson's goes to the exact page of what the RUclipsr has recommended. Can anyone help?
Thank you Sally - can I check I understand , the link for French Ultramarine for example, doesn’t take you to the French Ultramarine on Jackson’s? Does the link to Rosa take you to Rosa Gallery? I’m trying to figure out if it’s the links to the brand that don’t work or the link to the specific items, or both. Jackson’s recently split their sites, so they have a separate Uk, USA, Canada Sites (I can only access UK at the moment) but it should still work / link you directly. Thank you for letting me know x
@@SketchesnScrubs Any link to Jackson's goes to the front page. It used to flash on the item but then going to main page. But Links to other sites that I look at many times a day, go directly to the item. It is just frustrating and less convenient that this happens with Jackson's.

Good morning, do the characteristics of the paper affect granulating qualities? I am swatching RS watercolors (my first from this brand!), on cheap smooth watercolor paper because its what I had laying around, and I am not seeing a lot of granulating.
Hey! Thanks for watching - yes the paper affects the granulation. The rougher/more textured the paper, the more granulation. I usually like cold pressed paper which has some texture, but not as much as rough watercolour paper Other things you can do for more granulation- adding lots of water to the paint on the paper. Leaving the paint alone once you applied it (not moving it around, not blow drying it). It is also dependent on the paints you’re using as not all colours will granulate. Hope this helps x
Great mixes, thanks. Just beautiful. Question: have you noticed that swatches, paintings etc in the khadi fatbook are literally disappearing? It’s more than fading, the colors and paintings done on them are just poof, gone. I do use this sketchbook to be just that, a sketchbook, but I was surprised at the degree of permanence the paper did not seem to have. And I use professional paints.
Thank you for sharing! I hadn't noticed that - how long have you had the fatbook for? I've had mine for a year, with a range of media - wondering if it's an isolated thing or something that would happen in the future? I'll ask my members too xx
@@SketchesnScrubs I have several but one has been worse. I use all water media and was using this one for swatching, which makes it all the more annoying because you know the work that goes into that. I’d love to know what your members say. For now they’re strictly for play.
