Unedited videos and sharing of inspiration on how to create visual reminders to stay present in the moment and appreciate the beauty that holds the power of connection and evoking change. I believe that everyone is creative and it was not that long ago that I first picked up a paintbrush. I quickly fell in love with the practice and it's become my daily passion that has moved me into a full-time working artist. I have a focus on watercolour, acrylic and mixed media painting.

Reticulated and Dendritic Texture in Fluid Art.
#fluidart #dendritic #reticulated #watercolourbackground
This is an unedited video sharing my process of how I like to create what I refer to as "reticulated" texture in fluid art, and how to "break the blank page". The pattern has also been described as "dendritic", and can be a fun way to make monoprints. It can be achieved in many different ways with different paints and substrates. I show how I like to find the pattern by squishing the paint between 2 pieces of fluid mixed media paper (yupo paper and plastic craft paper works well too). Some artists use sheets of plexiglass to get a similar effect.

Thank you Allison for generously sharing this technique! I have been following you since you started your channel and I even own your Art Poetry deck - today's card is "Protect your heart and feed your soul". I suspected your reticulated technique was some sort of pull, but I hadn't figured out that paint density was important. I really resonate with what you said about this looking like sand dunes or even in the sand pattern on wide beaches. Those are some on favorite patterns and I have been saving images of these for years. But I could never figure out how to replicate them in my art. Thanks so much for giving me a jumping off point. And then you shared Yellena's book...I was shocked...I had no idea she had a book! I have been following her on Etsy and Instagram for years and had no idea she made a book. Did you see the mugs she created this past fall? I don't have much space so I couldn't let myself buy one, but they were gorgeous. Thanks again for all your inspiration!
thanks for the lovely insights and encouragement Rachel! So glad I've given you some creative inspiration to work from. And great you have collected your own patters over the years... I didn't know Yelena was on Etsy and not sure if I even follow her on IG, but I'll have to check out her socials. I didn't see the mugs- but I'm sure I'll need one! haha.
Hi Allison, I do this abstract technique as well similar to yours. I love pouring paint then let it dry and start to block out what I see. I love botanicals but I am doing light landscapes. Acrylic inks and Dr. PH are my faves work with especially with mixed media it plays really well. Sometimes I just lay down color and come back to it on a later day! I did not know about this Canson paper for fluid paint..I notice inks dry fast with cold press than hot press. The liquitex inks are so intense I have to add water to mine and they last a really long time..I do love them but Daler Rowney are my absolute favorite acrylic inks! Have you tried neurotrophic art? I love this technique when I feel blocked or just want to have fun and its like art mediating! Love you showing you process! Maria
Hi Maria- thanks for sharing on here and watching my channel. I have tried neurographic art and really enjoyed it! Something I'd like to hop back into sometime! Happy creating!
i do this,love to you
Thanks Gina
I also have years experience in health information management. I too began seeing anatomy in the paints. Thanks.
Oh , a fellow HIM / HRT !! How computers have taken over so much of those jobs now!! I still love the sound of paper as I think it reminds me of my schooling and those days where I could hear pages/papers turning!
@ I agree, still like the paper too. It was a good career for me.
Thank you so much for sharing your reticulation process. I have a tip for you… I ruined the tip on my .9 to 1.3 white Posca pen. So I used an emery board and I filed it down a bit, and voila! Now it works great!
Thanks for sharing the "tip" (pardon the pun!) about the Posca pen! I need to try that. Brilliant idea!!!
YAY! Such fantastic technique...Can't wait to try this. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
I have seen the video and have gone straight to my art space. 😅 Worked well with Amsterdam acrylic ink at the backside of watercolor paper. Not so fantastic with the liquitec ink and at photo paper. Really gourgeous technique, thank you for sharing ❤
Allison, you are a talented and generous artist. Merci de partager cette technique avec nous. Lots of love from a dedicated fan in St Jérôme, Quebec 😘 ps.. If moved horizontally see a cool turtle one of the last cards you made!
OMG I just loved, loved, loved this video, thank you for sharing ❤
You are so welcome!
Great video again - I sure have been loving the burst of inspiration and learning! You mentioned that you use your I phone to take photos. I was wondering if you would be willing to share with me how you do this? I have tripods, lights and backdrops - I just am a little unsure of camera settings. My problem is my artwork is big and people want smaller scale. My originals also have chunky mixed media things like resin and glitter beads - so photography is best done before I add that stuff. It’s hard to take a half done piece to a photographer as I’m rural. ( and in Manitoba) I met Ken this past summer and am hoping to work with him very soon - but the photography is holding me up ( as did the postal strike and weather). Sure sign that the universe is saying take a pause … savour the learning!
Hi Kerri- I'm not as familiar with photographing larger artwork, so anything I take photos of will be able to sit on an easel and I can capture the image straight on... (or on a wall in my home). I don't really change any settings on my iphone. Do you have a colour card? Sounds like you are well equipped! I would encourage you to reach out to Ken again as he's really great at trouble shooting... It may be a bit harder when it's not in person though... Sometimes I photograph outside on an easel on overcast days... he can correct the blue lighting that comes with that. I believe he can correct shine but it's better to do photography before adding varnish or resin...
Thanks for the reply. I am communicating with Ken via email. :). He has provided me with a link to a good card to include in the photos. I sent him an example of they type of art I’m making and wish to print - mine is so 3 dimensional when done - that I have to photograph them before they are actually finished - which is hard to do when a gal is on a roll! Now that I know my intention is to capture good photos - I will be more mindful of it. Thank you so much for your reply. It’s good to know that you don’t have to have specific settings in the phone. I’ve watched a few videos on the topic that are only a few mo the old and they said basically the same thing. I do have photographers I could contact and work with but had hoped to figure it all out independently. I am just loving your happy burst of videos of late. You calm and inspire me :)
Thanks Allison for sharing, have you tried the Golden Hi flow paints? I’m so excited to try this!
Yes I have! I got sidetracked today and meant use them in a demo. Thanks for the reminder❤️
So many options and combinations! Would love to see more of this technique. Thanks again
I've played around with dendritic forms using paint, but never figured out how to use them. Thanks for the ideas! I have Yellena's book and love it.
You are welcome. Let me know if you have discoveries within your own style!
Do you still have your card deck available?
Yes, I do!
I love Amsterdam acrylic inks!!
I have not tried that brand- thanks for sharing it.
I love Amsterdam acrylic inks!!
Thank you!!
You’re welcome!
I love all of these so much!!! 🥰 It was so cool to hear the background of some of the cards from your Art Poetry deck-and really loved seeing some of the ones that didn’t make it to the deck-they’re all so beautiful!!!
I am glad you enjoyed hearing about the cards from the deck. And I cant wait to catch up on your videos❤️thanks for inspiring me too!
"DENDRITIC" would be a good name for a Zine!!!🙈
Yes!!
Allison, you have opened a whole new painting world for me. I love that you pull so much feeling from your paintings and happy mistakes that make them so much more your own personality you share with us. I only paint for myself, family and friends as gifts. Don’t ever stop experimenting and sharing what you feel from them, it will make me look closer at my own work and see what I can pull as emotion and feelings from them. Thank you so much!❤😊
Thank you so much for sharing your insights. I’m so glad you enjoy watching my videos and have inspiration for your own creative process❤️
OK, if you watched this video demo and fail to be totally inspired - go to the doctor immediately - there's something wrong with you!!! What a cool technique you kindly shared with us. Myself, having a full time job and basically just weekends to dabble - having you share your love of art this way makes it so much easier for people like me to dive in and play. Funny, for Christmas I had asked for fluid inks and they've been sitting on my shelf untouched. Now after watching you demo them, I can't wait to begin play. I have the iridescent Golden inks as well as some Golden High Flow ink..then I also received a box of 16 inks that are the Roizefar brand that has some really lovely colors in it. I have some glossy card stock and grafix paper and mylar to play with. I'm so grateful to be able to learn from you, Allison - thank you so much for this video!!!
You have such a great set of supplies! I hope you have fun experimenting! It’s comments like this that encourage me and is the very reason I share some techniques like this. Thank you for watching and supporting me. I really appreciate you.
I am so hooked on your paintings and explaining how you do it. I love to paint but would rather watch you paint. You are so talented. I have wondered how you discovered the reticulated technique. Keep on painting.❤
Thank you for the kind words and for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing. I've admired your work for so long and wondered how you achieved this technique. I can't wait to try it. I already have some acrylic inks including Liquitex Iridescent Bronze. Thank you again. You've inspired me once again.💕
I’m so glad to have inspired you! With lots of experimentation, you will come across your own techniques and colours and Mark making that you enjoy in your own voice.
You are so generous to share this with us. To the point of tearing the cover off of your paper pad! So kind and I am so excited to try this method. I can not say thank you enough. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
Haha. I was not attached to the collage on the cover of my mixed media pad! Plus the UHU glue stick did not cooperate with that material! Thanks for your kind comment
Thank you for sharing Allison! I have your card deck and those cards with the reticulated technique are some of my favorites. I am going to try this right away. So excited!!
Have fun! thanks for commenting and watching, Carol.
Reticulated and dendritic sound like medical terminology words-were you a nurse?
Yes, registered nurse and worked in healthcare over 20 years.

It's super addicting! thanks and hope you have fun with it.
Hi Allison, I wonder if you have done this on WC cold press paper, and using acrylic paints instead of inks? I love this result.😍
Yes you can! You can achieve this texture and effect in so many different ways!

I have just ordered Yelena James book😍. There were only 2 available in Australia, so lucky me.

Best glue ever. Like butter. Thx
You’re welcome! It does make collaging so much easier.
Allison. I saw your baby doggy. I have a pup full of love too. I love all the cards you share. Do you have any videos on how to get watercolors on canvas instead of framing them? Do you have a link to your blog? And guess who came out with an amazing collage stock glue? Scotch! It’s like butter! If you can’t find it just reach out to me. I think it’s their Scotch craft one. It’s a white stick
Aw, Oakley. He's my shadow - always with me. I will consider doing a video with demonstrating watercolour on canvas.. need to think on it for a bit. Yes, my blog is here- www.allisondawrant.com/blog/all-the-beautiful-papers Thanks for sharing about Scotch glue !! Great to know! Let me know how you enjoy working with it.
I love the way you paint so very much. This one is as beautiful as all the others. What makes me enjoy and look forward to your videos is the way you film them. Like others said here, it makes me feel like we’re in the same room, painting. I savor the length of them, it doesn’t bother me at all. Also you give great tips along the way. You also introduced me to the Beam Paint Co. so far, I had just 2 little palettes on the wood. At the present, though, I’m waiting on my first order of the half pans & I can’t wait❣️❣️
Enjoy the anticipation of your Beam paints purchase! It will be worth the wait and the excitement that comes with it. Thanks for the encouragement as always! xx
