    I used to do scrapbooking years ago when my kids were growing up, and now I have loads of scrapbook paper just sitting there unused. So I have started making sketchbooks out of them. I have 6 of them right now in varying sizes that I am working in. It is a great starting point as most of the pages already have colour and pattern and I don’t feel at all precious about them!

      @@LauraHornArt Please perdon me to say that I love how you do it. It is well, that way, one get a taste of the different varieties that there are. God forbid, if one loses one sketchbook, the other sketchbooks have got mark makings , splotches, splatters , marks wet in wet, experiments of textures; botanical or geometric abstract elements .

    You know what this has done for me? SKETCHBOOK AND NOTEBOOK SHOPPING. YAAAAAAAAY. Obviously my writing practice as well as my art practice needs multiple notebooks and I've been SILLY, just SILLY! by trying to restrict myself to just one for each practice. Well, okay, I have a few different sketchbooks, but I've had it in my head that they are each for different things. THANK YOU for breaking me free!

    I would love you to talk about what value you find in doing a sketchbook. I find I am too busy creating “proper” paintings for exhibitions. I would like to be convinced why I should work in a sketchbook as it looks fun, but I want to understand how it helps you with your bigger works.

    • @LauraHornArt

      That’s a great topic, I do find that my sketchbook practice isn’t as prolific when I’m working on larger pieces or a body of work. I do refer to them though and use them to test out ideas. I’ll pop it on the list for a future video. 🎨✨

    • @LauraHornArt
      @LauraHornArt  3 месяца назад

      Thank you! I'm glad you found it inspiring. I have a "go for it" approach for a few reasons. Most of my sketchbooks have heavyweight paper, at least 200 gsm, which can handle a multitude of media. I also enjoy using watercolour and ink directly on the paper, as I prefer how they look compared to applying them over gesso. It really depends on your personal preference and how you work. For me, I like to jump straight in without worrying about preparing pages or waiting for them to dry.

    I’m struggling between the practice aspect and the deep desire of wanting to ultimately end up with something worth framing and displaying in my home. I know practice is important and we should simply enjoy the journey but then I produce stacks and stacks of papers (most of which I love and cannot part with because they become part of me). This can create a creative block for me. So on that note, I must ask, what do you do with all the painted papers you create? Do find places to stash them away, do you display them, or do give them away? Please don’t tell me you dispose of them….I simply can’t handle knowing that, lol. Please share this part of your process with us.

    • @LauraHornArt
      @LauraHornArt  3 месяца назад +1

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts. For me, sketchbook work is an integral part of the creative process and eventually leads to pieces that can be displayed or sold. I usually spend a month or so in my sketchbook before moving onto different substrates, which helps keep the loose paper clutter at bay. The loose works I create as practice often end up in folders for reference. If a piece isn't quite what I hoped for, I might repurpose it for collage, and occasionally, I do let go and throw some pieces out. Recently, I've started turning my practice scraps into handmade sketchbooks-the perfect solution imo! Keep in mind, there's no right or wrong approach. If you're looking to display pieces, working on loose paper might be the best option for you. For storage, I find that Alex drawers from IKEA are great for organising completed paper pieces.

    I think your art is beautiful and original! Referring to what someone mentioned in the above comments, could you use those beautiful pieces in your sketch books to sell them? They are just so amazing, I would love to be able to find them printed somewhere. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. It's not always easy to repeat something from your sketchbook to a larger stand-alone piece. Thank you!

    • @LauraHornArt
      @LauraHornArt  3 месяца назад

      Thank you for such kind words from my art. It is possible to scan artwork when it is on a single page, but double-page spreads are tricky. I actually tried it recently and wasn't happy with the results. I do plan on taking some of these ideas onto loose sheets of paper and creating work that will be for sale and also more suitable for prints. I agree though, it is very difficult to replicate what comes through in the sanctuary of a sketchbook!

  • @maureencoles9914
    @maureencoles9914 4 месяца назад

    do you then use these as possible samples for larger works?

    • @LauraHornArt
      @LauraHornArt  3 месяца назад

      I use them for reference, but rarely try and replicate something exactly. I am more likely to just pull a few elements from the sketchbooks e.g. a colour palette, image, mark-making style etc and then combine it with whatever comes through in a fairly intuitive process.
