- Come join me as I create a variety of backgrounds in my sketchbook using mixed media! 🎨 I love starting pages in different ways so that I have fun things to return to and explore later. This relaxed approach encourages experimentation and ensures nothing feels too precious. In this demo, you'll see me start spreads using acrylic ink, collage, gel pens, and watercolour.

This loose, process-oriented, flowy, curiosity-driven approach to art is really one of your signature traits, I think, and I appreciate it so much! ❤
Wow, thank you! You're so kind, I appreciate you watching these videos!
Nice idea to work across several sketch books. I normally work with one and wait for things to dry which is ok if I only have 15 minutes to practise art, but I like the thought of having the freedom to do more by working across several. Beautiful work as always!
It's only recently that I realised that not everyone works on multiple sketchbooks at a time 😆I am so used to having several on the go! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I love this approach of working on multiple books with different medias. What great play❤
It really is! Thank you for watching!
Very inspiring, Laura. With limited creative time available, I am often cautious about spending time in the sketch book as I want to use my time to “make artwork” to share and exhibit. This has helped me to appreciate the value of sketchbooks for experimentation and learning, which is a big mental shift for me. I’m just scared of falling in love with things in my sketch book and not being able to recreate them! 😂
I adore the sketchbook, but I think the inspiration it gives to larger pieces creates art I love on an even larger scale! Hopefully that helps you not get stuck in the "what if" of loving your sketchbook too much 😂💖
Thank you so much for sharing your process, Laura! I am feeling a little stuck lately after finishing my 100 days project, so this video was exactly what I needed to get inspired again!❤
You are so welcome! The 100 day project can be such a huge undertaking, you've got this! 💖
Always love watching your technique and how the natural flow works in harmony with your mind.💚 Thank you Laura.
Thanks Paulene, I always find sketchbooks so great for creative flow!
I absolutely LOVE all of these starting points. This is so helpful because sometimes a blank page can be the most daunting thing. Thank you for all of your amazing videos.
I am so happy that you are enjoying these! Kind comments like these inspire me to continue creating content like this, I appreciate you!
Fresh colors& ink💚 Sends us in the northern hemisphere into summer energy 🗺️
Thank you, I’m heading into winter and usually I go very earthy with my colours, but we’ve had uncharacteristically warm and springy autumn weather recently. Not today though 🌧️
COLOR! I'm so excited to see your colorful work. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you, I’m working on a more colourful class too that’s full of mixed media experimentation. I’m finding the process super fun. It’s definitely awakened something inside of me. 🎨🌈✨
Thanks for the inspiration, Laura. This was a good reminder of how much fun it is to get out some markers, pencils, paint, and just play.
You are so welcome!
I love this method of applying inks… thank you for the inspiration!
You are welcome, I love it too as it means most of the ink ends up on the page and doesn't dry on the palette or get in your water. Keeps everything really lovely and vibrant. Sometimes I do dots, other times I do squiggles and then just blend them out.
So enjoyed watching. I love your loose, flowing marks across the journals. I'm off to the art shop tomorrow for sketchbooks and some paints!!
Have fun! I love visiting the art shop 😊
Thank you for this video. I had never played around with the splatter technique on my neo colors before. So much Fun.❤
You are so welcome! I hope you have fun testing it out!
beautiful, especially the red dots add alot of interest
Thank you! The red dots aren't something I would usually go for, but I am trying to push outside my comfort zone and try different colours and contrasts. I agree, they add an interesting pop :)
@@LauraHornArt yes trying something new can lead to discoveries that can add to a routine. Very nice video. Cheers from Berlin
Always love watching you work.
Thank you so much!
I love this, very inspiring I'm off to have a play💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻

Always a joy

Thank you so much! Happy creating!
Thanks for showing us these projects❣️. I really liked it.
It brings me joy to know that you like these! Thank you so much for watching!
This is super helpful and inspiring. I often feel like making art is a bit of an ordeal. Getting started is usually the hardest part -- kind of like exercising! Thank you for sharing these easy and no-pressure ways to get going. :)
So true! It can so easily feel overwhelming to get started and make that initial mess, and then feels so lovely once we are in it!
Thank you again…a feast for thought!
Happy to hear that, thank you so much for watching!
these are really cool techniques! I think I might need to get a bigger paintbrush, I love the size of yours 🥰
Oooh yes, big brushes are a must! Perfect for background techniques. I also love the silicone brushes too. Super fun!
thank you for another lovely vid
You're welcome 💖😊 thank you for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing your process. I have learnt so much from you both with your online classes and videos here. 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching! I love hearing feedback as kind as this, it inspires me to continue creating this content.
Oooh! Your approach is finally something I can relate to when working in my sketchbook(s). I’ve felt that I had to start AND finish my spread before starting another. Great tutorial. Thanks.
I am happy that you've enjoyed this, thank you so much for watching!
Loved this video thank you 😊 ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yay for this video!
Thank you, enjoy!

You're welcome! I'm so happy it was helpful to you
Now that is genius, having several sketch books! So simple and yet clears the mind of asking where are my notes, ideas etc. Great tip! 👍 loving your channel. 2nd time for me, new subscriber.
Welcome to the channel! I am so happy that you are here and please reach out with any questions at all. So happy you enjoyed the video!
Beautiful work Laura. I love the way you smoosh the paint around. Beautiful juicy starts. I hope we get a glimpse of how you use them maybe. Thanks for sharing. Very inspiring. I'm going to go paint now 😂.
Thank you so much! Happy painting!
Helpful!
I'm glad! Thank you!
❤❤❤
😊💖
Great video!!
Can you tell me what papers you used for collage?
Thank you !
very cool 😎 ❤ love it - thx for sharing 🙏🏻🩷
Thank you for visiting the video! I am so glad you enjoyed it
Love every one of these! Your creativity inspires me.
Also: can i ask what kind of chair you're using? It looks super comfy. My current studio chair gets pretty uncomfortable.
Thank you! My chair is from the Australian retailer 'Adairs' and is called the Neville Forest Boucle Desk Chair. I've been really enjoying it. Most comfy studio chair I have had so far.
How do you keep that gloss gel from making your pages stick together? Love your work, thanks for sharing
I usually pop a bit of greaseproof paper in between pages if they are in progress. Once finished, I seal with Dorland's Wax Medium. I like the gloss because it dries really nice and clear but you could use matte gel medium to help prevent sticking.
Love this video. Can I ask - I have a gelly roll 10 white pen and I can't get the ink to flow. Is the oen faulty or am I using it wrong?
Thank you. Sometimes gel pens can be a bit tricky to get going. You might need to shake the pen a few times and scribble on a scrap piece of paper to get the ink going. If the tip is clogged you can sometimes revive it by running the pen under hot water and warming the ink up.
Your art is so beautiful! Are your sketchbooks just for play and getting new ideas or do you use those pages in finished art pieces?
Mostly just for play and experimentation. I do refer to them when painting finished pieces, but only loosely. It's one of the things I love about sketchbooks - it's my personal art time and I love they way it makes me feel.
Hi Laura, just looked at what I have in the greasproof paper area, can you tell us what you mean by grease proof paper ? The only one I have isn't very transparent. It's from the supermarket 😏Is there a brand you use?
Greaseproof paper is called deli paper in the US. It's used primarily for wrapping sandwiches and isn't suitable for putting in the oven. Mine isn't as transparent as I like, so I might try another brand. The one I have at the moment is the Armarda brand from Woolworths. You can also get deli paper in some craft shops that is imported from the US. It's more expensive, though, and pretty similar to what is called "greaseproof paper" in Australia. I hope that helps!
